We caught up with Belgium band, Balthazar at the 2015 Culture Collide Festival in Los Angeles, where they discussed the origin of the band name and their new Album 'Thin Walls'.

00:00Hi, I'm Jinte from the band Balthazar. I sing and I play guitar.

00:11And I'm Martin from the same band. I play the same instruments.

00:15He also sings.

00:17It started as a high school band, like, you know, ten years ago.

00:31It was like, oh, we need to find a name for the posters, you know,

00:34and then we're going to change it afterwards.

00:36And we're like, oh, let's think Balthazar, that's like funny.

00:39Which band is called Balthazar? And then we never changed it.

00:42So we're stuck with it for ten years now.

00:45But we learned to love it.

00:47The thing was, like, before the show, we were talking, like,

00:49how the hell are we going to get them up, you know, from their chairs?

00:53And we got on stage and everybody jumped up and we were like,

00:55oh, we didn't have to do anything. Easy.

01:02In Europe, we're touring for quite some years now,

01:05so this is new, but I think we have to play old songs as well.

01:09Otherwise, we might just skip the old ones and just play new ones.

01:12It was funny to see some people sing along, even with the old songs.

01:16Okay.

01:17We produced our previous records ourselves.

01:20Tell me a little bit about that, because I understand that the producer on this album

01:23used to work with Blur, and how was working with him?

01:26How did he influence your sound for this album?

01:28We were always very protective about, you know, getting it out of hands.

01:32The cool thing about band was he knew we were kind of protective about it,

01:35so he wasn't, like, forcing his own sound or something.

01:38He's the kind of producer that gets the best out of a band.

01:41The thing is, we just write way too many songs.

01:43Like, the last album, we wrote it on tour.

01:45I think we made, like, 273 demos.

01:49We were a bit afraid that we wouldn't have any time to write an album,

01:52so we just started writing on tour.

01:54It was like a game to write a song every day.

01:58In the end, not every song is really good.

02:00That's why we ditched a lot of songs this year.

02:03Yeah.

02:04It just starts just with a guitar or something really simple.

02:07It's really nice to make arrangements with Balthazar.

02:10It's one of the things we're proud of.
