Spain's attorney general resigns after Supreme Court conviction over data leak

Álvaro García Ortiz's decision came less than a week after he received a two-year suspension and a fine for disclosing private information about the partner of an opposition politician.

00:01Alvaro García Ortiz has resigned as Spain's Attorney General just days after he was suspended for two years by the country's Supreme Court.
00:09The top prosecutor was found guilty of leaking confidential information about the boyfriend of a leading opposition lawmaker.
00:17The outgoing Attorney General announced his decision in a letter sent to Spanish Justice Minister Félix Balaños on Monday.
00:24Ortiz stated in his letter that he was leaving before the Supreme Court executed his disqualification out of, quote,
00:32deep respect for judicial rulings and proceedings.
00:36He also added that his decision was rooted in his, quote,
00:39everlasting desire to protect the Spanish public prosecutor's office.
00:44Ortiz was convicted after a months-long investigation and trial found him guilty last week on Thursday
00:49of sharing private information on Alberto González Amador,
00:54partner of Madrid Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso,
00:57who's being investigated for alleged fraud.
01:00Ortiz's resignation will only be made official once the Spanish Council of Ministers sign off on it,
01:06which is likely to happen on Tuesday.
