00:00First off, some viewers nowadays, especially, they're a little skeptical about watching and or reading more stories that take place during a war, anything violent, especially World War II.
00:12What would you both say to them?
00:15I think for me, the reason I wanted to tell this story is when I read George's book, I felt like this was a lens on this chapter of history that I had never seen before.
00:30And I'm saying that as a Jewish woman who felt like I had a pretty good education about the Holocaust.
00:35I just I'd never seen a story like this before.
00:38I think the way the family is scattered across the globe, the sort of ability to see their experiences across different countries through nine years, a really big Jewish ensemble.
00:52I think also, you know, I think there have been many amazing stories told about the Holocaust, but Jews are not always centered in those stories.
01:01And I think I felt like for me, this was an opportunity to have 12 distinct Jewish characters at the center of it.
01:08And that was a really exciting opportunity.
01:11And I think also the story is about this family and their humanity.
01:18And so it is a story that has love and laughter and music.
01:24And, you know, this family keeps living in spite.
01:26They advance their lives every day.
01:28And I think that also was a really compelling reason to try to bring it to life.
01:36Absolutely.
01:36Thank you for walking me through that.
01:38I really am looking forward to seeing this.
01:41How was it?
01:42I'd just like to shift gears for one quick second.
01:44What was it like working with Joey and Lurgan and, oh, my God, Logan Lurman.
01:49I'm so nervous that I talked to all of you.
01:51I'm like stuttering in every interview.
01:53What made them right for these roles in your eyes, both of you?
01:57Well, you know, these two characters who are siblings, they're talked about in the book.
02:04And, you know, we tried to bring this to bear in the series as twin souls.
02:07They shared a birthday years apart.
02:09And so there was something about that dynamic that we felt if we could get that right, maybe we could build from that.
02:15Joey really responded to the material very early on and was the first person to say that she wanted to join.
02:21And she and Logan knew each other just from around, having both been doing this for a long time.
02:26And they'd worked together briefly, but really just mostly like knew each other from two young actors who are coming up doing this.
02:34And so there was a sort of fundamental understanding they had about each other that felt already like a very legitimate bond.
02:41And so what they what they step into, you know, any room they're in or on to set with is deep expertise and excellence in their craft.
02:49They're just sky high level talent.
02:52They've also had a ton of experience.
02:54They are interested in being leaders.
02:56They're interested in leading through their work and aware that they have a big impact on the energy of whatever room they're in.
03:05And they take that very seriously by infusing all of those rooms with passion and love and and are constantly both expressing their appreciation for being there and then going and doing this excellent work.
03:20So that deep humanity on and off screen, I think, really helped set a tone and let us build from that something they could feel like a family.
03:29As soon as you saw them, we wanted we wanted you to say, oh, yeah, those are brother and sister.
03:33Or that's mom and dad, you know, and all.
03:34And I think that you really can feel that in that first episode.
03:37Well, thank you.
03:38I think we've run out of time, but I just wanted to thank you guys so much for talking to me.
03:42I really can't wait to see this production.
03:44And thank you for the work that you've done.
03:45I understand this was a real, you know, it was a difficult production, but one with a lot of love.
