Hungary and Serbia: cross-border cooperation on floods and droughts on the Tisza river

Serbia and Hungary study the pulse of the Tisza River. The ADAPtisa project brings together researchers, universities and water management organisations from both countries. They share data to create a platform for integrated river basin management in the border region.

In partnership with the European Commission

00:00The Tiza River, the largest tributary of the Danube, is no placid stream.
00:10Climate change has amplified the frequency and intensity of floods and droughts in its basin, which crosses five countries.
00:19Two of them, Hungary and Serbia, have decided to share data and work together to better react to these phenomena.
00:27Our goal is to develop an integrated water management platform.
00:32Let's say a digital space where experts, institutions and decision makers cross-border can exchange data,
00:42forecast risks and coordinate real-time responses.
00:47This clean-up operation in Basay, Serbia, is part of the measures implemented by the European Interregional Project Adaptisa.
01:01Milean, a volunteer, has not forgotten the 2006 flood.
01:05The Tiza River overflowed its banks and destroyed his old house, which he was luckily able to rebuild.
01:11I had an old, small camp where there was only 60 centimetres of blood.
01:17I looked at the BeÄŤiju, it was like a sea. There was no water in the river.
01:23Researchers analysed the water on the bank and in the centre of the riverbed.
01:29They studied the quality, pH and levels of phthalates and pesticides, among others,
01:35thanks to this mini portable laboratory financed by the project.
01:39Every sample we take today, every analysis we do, each kilo of waste we collect will actually be implemented in our water management platform.
01:49So we will try to see if the model we are developing and which we will use in the future for flood prediction is accurate.
01:56Adaptisa has a total budget of around 1.4 million euros, of which 85% has been financed by the European Cohesion Policy.
02:13The data is processed at the Water Management Agency in Seged, Hungary.
02:18Here they use artificial intelligence to help develop the hydrological models and integrated platform.
02:28If in 2006 the Tisa flood exceeded 10 metres, now it is the drought that worries them.
02:35We are here, the bridge is in the same place, but nowadays the water level is 100 centimetre,
02:44but at that time there was 1000 centimetre.
02:49And nowadays the drought situation is very, very extreme.
