00:00We're going back to PTV Sports with Coach B-Boy Rivera,
00:10the head coach of the Philippine National Bowling Team.
00:13When is Coach B-Boy in the 27th SLET Bay Open Championships?
00:20Good morning, Coach B-Boy.
00:22Good morning. Thanks for inviting me.
00:25Nice to see you again. It's been long. Last year, I think.
00:29Yes, almost one year na.
00:31So, Coach, congratulations to the championship crown nyo dito sa 27th SLETBA.
00:38Can you tell us more about this?
00:40Well, the SLET Open is an annual tournament hosted by the Association of Santa Lucia East.
00:48They are one of the biggest Philippine bowling associations
00:54na nag-organize ng mga tournaments. So, one of their goals is to develop the youth and promote the sport as well.
01:03Coach, paano nyo nahugot itong winning performance nyo sa tournament?
01:12So, just to give everyone information, senior division for bowling starts at the age of 50.
01:19So, hindi siya yung normal 60-year-old.
01:22So, aside from the average, yung mga players natin from 50 years old and above gets a handicap.
01:30Like, for example, si Coach Paeng, Coach Idol Paeng gets plus 10 because of his age.
01:36So, yung handicap na yun is added sa score nila per game.
01:44So, if someone is above 70 plus gets a handicap of 30.
02:10Well, ever since a month, I've always lived by my, yung aking, kumbaga yung lagi kong ginagawa,
02:20which is just to play my game, do my best.
02:23And if my best is good enough for that day or that tournament, mananalo ko.
02:33For staying fit.
02:35Yes.
02:36Kasi di ba parang importante din po yan as a player, yung food na kinakain nila sa iba?
02:43Oo.
02:44Well, kasi although bowling is really not that physical intensive,
02:48pero we still incur a lot of injuries from sa wrist, sa tuhod, sa back.
02:54So, one of the things that keeps us going or yung longevity ng ating bowling career
03:01is to stay fit, exercise, stay flexible, and watch weight.
03:07Hmm.
03:08Parter, isa si Coach B-Boy during the time na atleta pa siya,
03:13who was able to do a perfect game noong 2006 Busan World Championships.
03:19Now, from that, Coach, paano nyo, pag naaalala nyo yun, hinuhugot bilang inspirasyon,
03:39So, nire-relieve ko lang yung moment na yun, and it gives me belief na kaya kong humaboy,
03:46kaya kong bumawi, at kaya kong manaat.
03:48Hmm.
03:49Now, besides the 27th SLE-TBA,
03:53nag-place din po kayo dito sa kagaganap,
03:56or katatapos sa 5th Mega Lanes Senior Tournament sa Malaysia.
04:01Now, you've been in the industry, and you've been an athlete for 32 years.
04:06Paano nyo po namimaintain yung winning form ninyo?
04:09Um, well, I still do practice once in a while, no?
04:12So, but most of my time, I do devote to business,
04:16and I coach on the side, mostly for kids who wants to be in the national team later on.
04:23Eh, minsan, before or after nung coaching ko, nagpa-practice ako,
04:28and I still devote time to do physical fitness.
04:31Hmm.
04:32And of course, sleep is very important.
04:34Actually, salatong mga atleta, no?
04:36Lagi namin naririnig yan.
04:37Classic yan.
04:38Lagi nilang sinasabi, proper diet, proper rest, and enough sleep.
04:41Kompleto po, no?
04:42O, eight hours of sleep, yes.
04:43Ito po.
04:44Coach, bilang dati pong head coach ng PH national team,
04:47paano po ninyo ginamit ang inyong experience
04:49sa pagharap sa pressure ng SLE-ATB Open?
04:53Um, well, senior division, kung masasabi natin, is more of a relaxed division na compared sa mga national team competitions, no?
05:04So, most of the time, our goal there is to just enjoy ourselves, relax.
05:10Pero, syempre, having yung parang titles in your name, meron pressure to perform pa rin, no?
05:19Hmm.
05:32So, why do you have to do that, and ano yung naging epekto nito sa iyong performance?
05:37Oo.
05:38Bali, I shifted from 15 to 14 right after the pandemic, no?
05:43Nung nag-start ulit ako maglaro, coming from a two-year break or rest,
06:04I decided to shift to a lower weight.
06:07Pero now, ah, bumalik ulit ako sa 15 kasi yung bigat ng bola is very important in increasing your strike percentage.
06:33Um, injuries, ah, given na yun.
06:36Pero minsan yung mental state mo on that day or going into the tournament,
06:42minsan pag medyo sluggish ka or medyo yung feeling mo medyo down, kulang ka sa energy,
06:48yung performance na apektuhan, no?
06:50And also, dadating yung time na during the finals, mag-login ka.
06:56Meron kang score na mababa.
06:58So, the challenge is paano mo ibabalik yung positive mindset mo para makabawi ka.
07:05Positive mindset.
07:06Ang ganda na sinabi ni Coach.
07:08Eh, Coach, lagi kong narinig sa inyo na lagi niyo sinasabi, age is but a number.
07:13What does that mean to you?
07:15At paano niyo yan pinapatunayan na ngayon na nasa seniors level na kayo?
07:19Oo.
07:20Yeah.
07:21Well, yan, it starts from kahit nung earlier days na nagte-training ka pa, no?
07:28If you take care of your body, you sleep right, you eat right, you exercise,
07:41And, ngayon, even though bowling is changing from getting, being a powerful sport,
07:55Kaming mga senior na, ang sinasabi nating age is but a number,
08:01but a number is nakakalaban kami because of our experience.
08:05Oo.
08:06Very important experience.
08:07Oo. So, when it comes to pressure situations or yung mga problem solving
08:12ng paano mo a-adjustan to mong ganito, yung experience plays a big part.
08:17And speaking of yun nga po sa senior age at ano, ano po ba yung perfect na edad
08:23to start training or if yung mga interesado pong mag-a-laro ng bowling?
08:27Now, yung isa sa pinakabata kong student is 10 years old.
08:3310 years old.
08:34Oo.
08:35So, he started at 10.
08:37I've been coaching him for a while.
08:39Nasa 13 na siya ngayon.
08:41And even yung isa kong up and coming potential national team and world champion,
08:54I've been training him for a while.
08:56Na ngayon, from 11 years old, 14 na siya.
09:00And he's competing with the best in the Philippines, the national team level.
09:06Oo.
09:11Dati kang head coach ng men's bowling team.
09:14Ano yung nakikita mo entering the Southeast Asian Games?
09:18Yung chances natin for the Southeast Asian Games?
09:21At the same time, ano ba yung mga kailangan natin i-improve?
09:24Hmm.
09:25Ah, ah, ah, maraming nagsasabi kasi na,
09:29Southeast Asian Games lang yan, ilang countries lang yan,
09:32pito lang.
09:33Mas madali yung field natin, no?
09:36Ah, but ah, a lot of people don't know
09:39that in the Southeast Asian region,
09:42the top two powerhouse in the world,
09:45namely Malaysia and Singapore,
09:48makakalaban natin yan sa Southeast Asian Games.
09:51So kahit ito lang yung countries,
09:53ah, yung top two in the world nandiyan,
09:56and we are, in my opinion,
09:58ranked fifth out of the seven countries that will be participating.
10:03So we are behind Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand.
10:08So, but all, ano pa rin?
10:11Ah, nagawa naman natin before.
10:14Laban lang tayo, we keep our mindset positive,
10:19we do our best, and hopefully.
10:24Speaking of laban,
10:25the last time na napasaba ang bowling sa Southeast Asian Games
10:29was Vietnam Southeast Asian Games
10:31because hindi napasama ang bowling sa Cambodia.
10:35Yes.
10:36So, right now po ba, during that time,
10:39nakakuha tayo ng gold?
10:41Yes.
10:42Both sa men's singles and team.
10:45Sa tingin nyo ba, with our current line up ngayon,
10:49kaya po ba natin magawa po yan ulit?
10:51Um, I still believe na kaya ng team natin, ano?
10:55Kasi, ah, now, there's a combination of the up-and-coming stars sa lalaking.
11:01Art Barrientos, Mark Custodio, and meron tayong mga rookies.
11:08Pero, with yung pagpapractice nila together for a long period of time, yung jelly nila, yung camaraderie, ah, I think, yung team event, kaya natin yan.
11:21Coach Biba, I'm just very curious, oh, Merwin Tan got gold dito sa men's single last Vietnam Southeast Asian Games.
11:28At the same time, nag-goal din siya sa team event.
11:41Oo.
12:22Wow, okay.
12:23Kasi top four.
12:24Top four lang po.
12:25For men's and top four for women's, ang ipapadala sa Southeast Asian Games.
12:29Now, the team is currently at Hong Kong right now for the World Championships.
12:34Sa tingin nyo, since mas mabigat na competition ng World Championships, magandang preparation to for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games?
12:42Yes, ah, it will be a good exposure, ah, bowling aside the best in the world.
12:49So, even yung mga powerhouse ng ibang, ah, um, continents like US, Europe, no?
12:59Nakamakakalaban din nila doon.
13:01Although, iba yung format, pero it will give them confidence coming into the next Southeast Asian Games.
13:10Eto, Coach B-Boy, meron po ba kayong pinaghahandaang competition right now?
13:16Ah, for now, ah, myself wala.
13:19Pero, I'll be going with, ah, the younger teens in, ah, next month for, ah, U22 Storm Event in Malaysia.
13:31So, I'll be with, ah, kids from under 12, under 15, under 21.
13:39So, I'll be coaching them, ah, part of their, ah, ano, international exposure, no?
13:46But this is not a national team event.
13:48So, supported by the parents lang itong kids.
13:51Grabe, partner, no?
13:52Very involved pa rin si Coach B-Boy after 32 years.
13:56Finally, Coach, meron po ba kayong gustong batiin or ishout out?
14:01Ah, yeah, please continue to support our national team, no?
14:05And not only a national team that, ah, is currently in Hong Kong.
14:09And also, the, our team that will be representing us in the coming Southeast Asian Games.
14:15And please do support yung sport of bowling.
14:18We, ah, currently in the hunt for potential bowlers that will be in the national team in the future, no?
