00:00:00dude it's been raining all night world looks a little bit worse it seems a little bit bump
00:00:11here today is that the homesteaders what's going on jane's got the truck stuck two trucks are down
00:00:25there's two trucks yeah oh wow you guys okay we've got a problem we blocked the main interest look at
00:00:38this if we can't get to the homestead this rescue is dead in the water
00:00:45alaska isn't for everyone we have young couples that are all in with the romance of alaska this is
00:00:58the cabin yes that's crazy do you have water no frankly i don't think they fully appreciate
00:01:06how bad this winter is going to be go go go we're 150 miles from the arctic circle and they're not
00:01:13prepared this is everything for me i love it here i don't want to leave we need to get this homestead
00:01:18shelter and food let's go three two one on this extreme homestead whatever you want to throw at us
00:01:26bring it
00:01:43the land of extremes it's nice now but last winter right here i'm sure it was 50 below zero
00:01:59it's wilderness as far as the eye can see and it's barren out here it's wild it's rugged
00:02:06oh oh my gosh dad dad there's a huge hole here matt got it
00:02:21that was frozen ground and it's melting right now today with this sun oh my oh
00:02:29my feet are on the door hang on hang on that was a good one hang on now we're not there we got another
00:02:38mile to go i've lived in alaska 40 years and i've never seen anything that looks like that this place
00:02:45is so brutal the rainies make their way into one of the most remote locations in the united states
00:02:54en route to a distressed homestead far from civilization in 1902 gold prospectors braved this
00:03:03rugged 450 000 square miles of glacier carved mountains and tundra in search of the mother lode
00:03:10in search of the riches that only true freedom provides it's in this extreme and unforgiving
00:03:29environment that a young family of new homesteaders fights a losing battle against off-grid survival
00:03:37i'm olivia and i'm james and this is our beautiful five acre homestead in the interior alaska
00:03:47we moved to alaska from georgia with our daughter last year our dream had been to live here and be
00:03:54self-sustaining we had looked at so many properties the year before we got up here olivia's only request
00:04:00was make sure it had a cabin and finally i found this place it said it had a cabin on it didn't talk
00:04:07to her about it hadn't seen the property i just pulled the trigger i think it was nine days that we
00:04:13drove and it felt like an adventure but we got here and things really took a turn when i showed up and saw
00:04:22the cabin i i knew i was in trouble and we are here this is the cabin they said was on the property
00:04:35the cabin was completely dilapidated
00:04:39i was devastated i was in tears because now we had to figure out where we were going to stay and what
00:04:45we were going to do in a place that i was completely unfamiliar with
00:04:48all i could think was we only have a short window to get things done before winter at first we set up
00:04:56a military tent to stay in but i didn't want to stay there with my child so we found an apartment that
00:05:04we stayed in for a few months but that really wasn't our goal in coming here so this spring we got back to
00:05:13work and we sent yanni to family while we get everything ready here now the goal is to build
00:05:21our home and get the homestead ready for winter but right now our situation here at the property is
00:05:29actually pretty grim the road coming into our property is really muddy and sticky it has a lot of
00:05:36ruts during rainy days it actually can look river-esque we have attempted to put in you know gravel and
00:05:45road underlayment and nothing works it is impassable for any pretty much any vehicle we've spent so much
00:05:53time getting materials out here and getting our cabin built that everything's behind we haven't had time
00:06:02to get any livestock or build any gardens or greenhouses which is really the goal here so that
00:06:09we can be off-grid we don't have any food source we have water tanks that we haul water in got a couple
00:06:16solar panels hooked up to run power but nothing else on top of that our cabin is not finished with arctic
00:06:24winter a month away the stam homestead needs immediate intervention where their families dream of a
00:06:31fulfilling off-grid life faces certain death this is our family this is our home and this is
00:06:38everything to us rainies we're desperate we need your help
00:06:48whoa oh i see people i see people
00:06:54hello hi i'm glad we found this spot what a driveway that's the worst driveway
00:07:00i've ever been on in my life olivia olivia nice to meet you i'm carissa chris nice to meet you i'm
00:07:06supposed to be meeting a guy named james james who are you my younger brother yes sir james jacob
00:07:12nice to meet you wow james there you are you're not driving that every day there's no way when we're
00:07:18able to drive it we drive it but we've actually been walking in and out with all of our supplies how many
00:07:24miles is it to walk it about two and a half two and a half miles one way one way yeah that's brutal
00:07:30hauling thing like laundry water so i have a question wow your husband is yeah i'm so sorry
00:07:40are you guys brothers yeah and we're sisters no way yeah you came to alaska how long ago what a month
00:07:47ago yeah so you've been here one month one month yeah does everybody live here yes yes and we all get
00:07:53along really well so i'm gonna die here like 104 years old maybe yeah james and jacob are brothers
00:08:01olivia and carissa are sisters they all moved to alaska in the middle of nowhere one big happy family
00:08:09but that family will be tested by the soon to come winter season you have a kid i do she's how old
00:08:19nine she's nine she's with family right now okay so you've called us here for a reason what is it
00:08:25we don't know exactly what we're doing we don't know if we're making you know strides in the in
00:08:30the right direction it's been constant chaos
00:08:36olivia and i grew up in georgia i grew up out in the country we had chickens and ducks and geese and
00:08:44sheep and horses it was like homesteading i first encountered alaska back in 2014 in the army i got
00:08:52stationed up here at fort wainwright fell in love with the place then and i got discharged in 2016
00:08:58and went back to georgia and all i could talk about was alaska i have stress and anxiety issues
00:09:05and the beauty of the place is just very free feeling and very calming
00:09:09jacob and i met through james and olivia and we've been together for about four years
00:09:16growing up me and olivia were always close and we had this dream that we want to go be homesteaders
00:09:22together having jacob on the homestead being my younger brother and all i mean we don't have family
00:09:27up here or anything so when he came up it was a big deal for us to feel more like home
00:09:31even with the additional manpower the stam homestead lacks essential shelter and food sources
00:09:40as a brutal interior alaskan winter approaches right now carissa and jacob they're sleeping in
00:09:48the army tent that we put up they have actually sidelined their living needs to help us with the
00:09:54cabin but that clock is ticking and i just can't see being able to accomplish all these things before
00:10:00winter comes this is everything for me i don't have a dime to invest further this is my retirement
00:10:07my peace olivia she's been a backbone and i can't imagine dragging her through this for nothing and if
00:10:14i fail that's like that's that's hard to take that'd be hard to take in so this is the old cabin yes or
00:10:25the cabin that was supposed to be the cabin that's crazy it's not much of a cabin anymore
00:10:32your brother and his wife were under the impression that this was going to be livable
00:10:35yeah when they initially got here this was said cabin that's crazy
00:10:41this homestead is incredibly remote and so before i do anything what i need is to salvage and find what's
00:10:49here because materials are incredibly hard to get to this homestead this trailer right here like
00:10:56what's the story with that i think i don't know if the guy bought a trash lived in it or not or if he
00:11:02just stored trash in there so here's the deal this thing right here i mean it might look like an old
00:11:10trash trailer but this could be a chicken coop there's not a lot that is here right so we have to take
00:11:18whatever is existing on the property and try to turn it into something that will help you stay here
00:11:25today and through the winter and on into the future yeah this is usable we have young couples that are
00:11:34totally all in with the allure and the romance of alaska but they have no idea just how crazy it's
00:11:44going to get they have so much work to do and without our help they don't have a snowball's chance
00:11:51in hell of making it through the winter behind these windows there's a concrete structure okay um and
00:12:01this was here when we bought the property as well i think that they were either trying to create a
00:12:06foundation for a root cellar or greenhouse when it comes to a garden is this it yep we had plans to
00:12:13fix it but we haven't had time so i have a million dollar question for you do you have water no we had
00:12:23plans to haul in water for the water tanks but we can't even get water out here right now access so
00:12:29exactly access is i mean a big huge restriction for sure yes okay so this hasn't been this easy fun
00:12:37ride no and you're happy we're here but i'm like surprised you're here like i gotta tell you i'm
00:12:44surprised this is the place that you're home setting yeah from georgia it is much much harder than i thought
00:12:51it was going to be but i feel like sacrifice wise we have done so much to get to where we are now i need
00:13:00this to work i really need this to work because my family and my my the love of my life we're talking
00:13:07about here i need this for us i can relate to olivia she is a mom of a beautiful nine-year-old girl
00:13:17liby and james moved out here because they wanted a very specific lifestyle they want to be
00:13:22self-sufficient self-reliant they have a dream and now there are so many boxes to check but the box
00:13:29everyone's overlooked is the reality check
00:13:38show me around this place
00:13:42this cabin who did the work me and my brother and my wife mostly
00:13:46i'm impressed
00:13:51so i'm looking at 16 by 32 cabin yes sir this is a way bigger cabin than most people would build out
00:13:56here why such a big cabin well if you ask my wife it's not a big cabin i'm asking oh i see
00:14:04is there going to be two stories yes sir let's go look at the upstairs sounds good how are we getting
00:14:09there we're taking a ladder i'll follow you all right there's two kinds of home setters one that
00:14:16tells you they know how to do everything and you find out that they can't and then you got guys like
00:14:22james who say man we really don't know what we're doing and you discover that they're smarter than
00:14:28they're letting on but the reality is this winter's coming we don't have time to build a two-story
00:14:35mansion in the wilderness this is supposed to be a five by eight bathroom and then from there we're
00:14:42hoping to have our staircase in the middle two doors here going into the bedrooms and i'll be
00:14:48honest with you i mean am i looking at that the extent of the materials that's left that pile
00:14:53for the most part yeah what you see is is here you don't have enough material to finish this that i can
00:14:58see to try to get this completed as per the dimensions and things you've just told me
00:15:04i might use a word of i i avoid and that word's impossible this building is well built but a window
00:15:15of opportunity to finish this before winter is closing and frankly for being this far away from the
00:15:24road system i don't think they fully appreciate how bad this winter is going to be
00:15:28and they're not prepared
00:15:41with summer mostly gone i don't think we can go with the plan which was two stories and a roof and
00:15:48i don't think we can do it as the rainies face off against the wilds of remote interior alaska
00:15:56they have less than one week to build crucial infrastructure on a young family's homestead
00:16:02before the extreme winter freeze destroys their off-grid dreams forever
00:16:09cutting down size that's totally fine especially if it means being able to work on more important
00:16:14things anything that you guys do is so so so appreciated well that's good to hear because
00:16:20getting here was like pretty impossible yeah so access alone is like really limiting what we can
00:16:27do for you because there are a lot of needs here and right now is the only time to do it so this is
00:16:36it it's like go time are you ready i'm ready oh we're ready we'll see you in the morning sounds good
00:16:42all right see you in the morning get some rest in the morning y'all do the same in the morning
00:16:58let's talk a little bit follow me these homesteaders are from georgia in alaska
00:17:10it's a little different it's a little extreme
00:17:13and better learn how to adapt not just to survive but thrive in these mountains
00:17:21hold that board right there
00:17:26so what i'm proposing is putting a roof right here you could use this space i mean a kid could
00:17:31have a bedroom in here oh yeah and then this section over here this would be a loft with some
00:17:38headroom a big bedroom okay the upstairs is primarily sleeping quarters but do you really need
00:17:47eight foot walls not really we can modify their plan if we just scale down shrink down this second story
00:17:57but we'll save on a lot of time and money if we can pull that off we just might might leave this family
00:18:04in a week's time with a safe insulated structure to face an oncoming alaskan winter
00:18:15you see what it saves us a lot of time and materials i like it i love it that sounds like a great idea
00:18:22this is not what we had planned at all but being out here it's vital being able to adapt and
00:18:26overcome situations and i want to be able to develop that ability and working with marty i
00:18:32think it's going to be amazing this is my end game this is my forever so everything i have in this and
00:18:37i don't want to go back to something else i don't want to go try to start over a new life
00:18:41this is where i want to be a man tells me that what can i say i take no delight in telling anyone that
00:18:50they're on the wrong path the question is can we make things right right now i'm ready
00:18:56to build i can't because we're going to need more materials than what are laying around this
00:19:02homestead let's get that taken care of soon okay
00:19:17okay olivia so for me i look at this foundation and i see a lot of time a lot of money a big effort
00:19:24for something that's still really solid right is it okay if we turn it into a greenhouse yeah okay
00:19:31you know i think this way south look at how many trees are here like some trees got to go down is
00:19:36that okay yeah there's not a lot on this homestead and for me it's all about food how do we get these
00:19:42homesteaders food and i think it starts with that old foundation and at any point if we can save ourselves
00:19:49time and materials and getting things here i'm gonna do it so let's get to work and get these
00:19:55homesteaders a food source misty and olivia will convert the existing 12 by 25 foot foundation into a
00:20:04greenhouse structure with a root cellar that will grow and store vital crops providing the family with
00:20:10a year-round food supply take that okay hit that we're gonna try and pop this guy off all right might
00:20:19need a few wax missy's idea for the greenhouse is really super cool i want to have that homesteading
00:20:28life that we're dreaming of but we've been set back so many times that we're really starting from square
00:20:33one so i think it's going to be awesome and it's a great utilization of the space that we already have
00:20:40and we don't have to build anything else so i'm excited
00:20:46here we go okay one more you're doing so good
00:20:59all right i want to talk about this structure here because look at it at first glance it's a
00:21:06dilapidated pile of junk right but if you really look in here i got a little bit of glimmer of hope
00:21:15that this might be able to be saved and salvaged get rid of all this stuff that's you know moldy and
00:21:22fallen down so we can actually turn this into a shop a homestead that's this remote needs
00:21:29infrastructure in place they need a good road shelter and it needs a shop it needs a place
00:21:35where you can work year-round indoors out of the wind in the cold they can get projects done fix things
00:21:41build things and i think we might be able to turn this old dilapidated cabin into the perfect shop
00:21:47what do you think i agree with you let's do it matt and jacob will transform the bones of the rundown
00:21:55cabin into a seven by 20 foot fully insulated workshop providing the homestead with a weatherproof
00:22:02space to house important tools and work on all season projects
00:22:09it's nasty in here it's going to be a dirty job there's a lot of mold in there and it's going to
00:22:15just start releasing all the dust and the dander and the spores and i don't want it all over myself
00:22:21and i don't think you do either no all right ready i'm ready all right let's go in
00:22:30oh that doesn't look so good it's going to be real nice having a shop that we can use year-round
00:22:35being out here so far away from town being able to work on our equipment anything else we might need
00:22:41i really like that idea and i'm really excited to see how this thing turns out i've seen enough
00:22:46everything from about here over is getting demolished and i think we should save the back
00:22:54two walls here and that wall that wall and this wall you ready
00:23:06all right look we're letting the sun in it's drying out already
00:23:10we're gonna turn this into something that's real good i can already see it yeah it's awesome i think so too
00:23:27we cleared out a lifetime of trash
00:23:32watch out
00:23:34i don't think that jacob ever really looked at this structure but now he's starting to see
00:23:39that we actually have potential for something that can really help the homestead
00:23:55so the week to come should be very hectic i think but jacob and i our ultimate goal is to live a happy
00:24:02long life at the homestead and to provide for ourselves i'm also so happy that i get to share this
00:24:09experience and this dream with my sister i feel like growing up she was kind of like a mom to me
00:24:15and i look up to her still to this day and i've learned a lot through her with all the work that's
00:24:20gone on on the property i feel super confident that we've got this as a family we are going to stick
00:24:26together and stay for each other and help each other out with whatever we need
00:24:41dude it's been raining all night yesterday was sunny and now look at this
00:24:45as day breaks in interior alaska it seems a little bit bumpier today the rainies are en route to the
00:24:53stam homestead but an overnight rainstorm causes further deterioration to the property's treacherous access road
00:25:02is that the homesteaders
00:25:11that's the girls that is yeah that's the homesteaders what what's going on jane's got the truck stuck
00:25:20what's that truck is in the middle of the road two trucks around there two trucks two trucks jump in here
00:25:25how's it going girl and by the way good morning another beautiful day in alaska hunt
00:25:37there is this mud and it's a problem that is so extreme the access here is no joke and the reality
00:25:46is this homestead might be the impossible homestead oh wow you guys oh no you're sideways
00:25:57there's rivers running down this road
00:26:01it's insanity dude
00:26:03we decided to get brave and take my truck through the mud pit
00:26:2237 inch tires all the way down
00:26:25then we decided we're gonna get the truck out of the mud pit we can use the dually
00:26:31then it gets stuck this is a battle we've been fighting for a while now
00:26:38we have so much still left to do i don't know i don't know how we're gonna do it
00:26:50look at that
00:26:55we can get this out
00:27:04first of all good morning good morning good morning i knew it was only a matter of time before
00:27:12the road to this homestead became a full-on off-road mud bog we're gonna try to do everything we can to
00:27:20get these trucks out of here so we can make to the homestead and actually start helping these people
00:27:25i don't want to be messing around here for six hours hook it on let's go all right sounds good to me
00:27:31you want to double up on your strap no it should go i think we're good here
00:27:36what do we need to do please got it good going back tighten her up
00:27:42here we go watch your eyes
00:27:45we have to talk a little bit how far is it from here to your homestead two and a half miles yeah
00:28:10not good we blocked the main interest it is something we got to take care of if we're going
00:28:14to build anything on that homestead there's no way we're getting these things out with just our monster
00:28:19truck i'm gonna bring the x down if she's bringing the excellent i'm getting this the skid steer i like it
00:28:25you guys know what's happening right oh the road is washing away you see this area right here yeah
00:28:36it's this thick it's called tundra underneath it is frozen ground it's called permafrost
00:28:44permafrost or ground that remains at or below freezing for at least two consecutive years is a
00:28:51common structural component of alaska's soil found beneath 85 percent of its land area road damage due
00:28:59to faulty construction over permafrost has caused millions of dollars in damage and often results in
00:29:06disruption of access in off-grid areas it's been frozen for some people say 700 000 years until
00:29:16somebody out here took off the insulation off that ice it allowed the sunlight to melt the top of the
00:29:24ice yeah and you combine that with rain this water is running over here and it turns into this primordial ooze
00:29:41it looks like matt we're gonna try skid steers less traumatic matt come on in with the skid steer
00:29:51we don't have any time to waste and now we're gonna waste the whole day just trying to get trucks
00:29:58pulled out of the mud and materials to the job site i'm a little nervous because we don't have much time
00:30:06to build a homestead from scratch
00:30:07oh gosh everybody stand back please no try to just pull it okay
00:30:20more there we go it's moving it's moving one more man don't be shy
00:30:30yeah next i don't want to scare anybody away from alaska but this is alaska listen real carefully i want
00:30:45you two to hook that chain up if you're not dealing with this at least once or twice a week
00:30:50in remote alaska then you don't live in remote alaska okay here comes the excavator
00:30:55this is what we're about to drive a 20 000 pound excavator on to
00:31:05stop misty's in the excavator but the real danger is try not to destroy the truck in the process
00:31:13please give it a little lift lift up yo up nice and slow nice and slow
00:31:26walk backwards a little bit you are sinking i know into your blade here
00:31:31so try to back up just try to pull him with the boom
00:31:39okay stop right there stop now you're gonna you're gonna back the machine up
00:31:46punch it
00:31:47just keep going
00:31:55whoo
00:31:59i mean now what is he out
00:32:02thank you jamaica we'll try it he says he can make it let's get loose
00:32:08i thought marty was gonna get it out i had pretty good faith i don't think this would have happened
00:32:13the same way with without the big equipment it probably would have took me weeks or months maybe
00:32:17to get it out
00:32:22whoo go go go go go go go go go
00:32:28yeah mud fogging that was crazy that road's completely destroyed and that's not going to work
00:32:36for the long term so we've got to get clever and figure out how to fix it
00:32:51six hours to get here and under three miles of road but every second counts we've got all the tools
00:32:59and all the lumber to get cracking
00:33:01it's ridiculous oh with the road yeah you're annoyed with the road yeah it's it shouldn't be this
00:33:09hard it just doesn't matter what you do go go go
00:33:17i see the homestead i see the homestead look there is the homestead what time is it we made it holy crap
00:33:31climb out of there kids there's no time for uh patting each other on the back we gotta hit it
00:33:39how come you look troubled um
00:33:44we've been struggling with this road for so long now and it sucks we would not have been able to get
00:33:53the truck out of the mud if the rainies wouldn't have been here to help we've struggled so hard for so
00:33:58long with it that it was irritating and heartbreaking because it's like how many more times are we gonna
00:34:05have to do this i'm trying so hard to just stay glued together and be strong but sometimes it just
00:34:14really gets to you and i just am i'm just having a weak moment that's it we get it we're here the
00:34:22materials are here we're in it with you only a really cool family could go through this day after
00:34:29day and still be together united not fighting because it's stressful so that's a testament to this family
00:34:36i'm seeing olivia at a low because everything is going wrong and it's like not an easy day but when
00:34:42it comes to this extreme homestead we have to salvage this time we have because we're unstuck we're at
00:34:48the homestead this is a good thing now let's get to work i'm gonna fight and keep fighting i want to
00:34:54know right now what if tomorrow we have the same seven eight hour problem trying to get to the
00:34:59homestead what if it's two days in a row i'll do it while crying what okay on that note on that note
00:35:06let's unload some lumber come on everyone everyone follow me
00:35:08on a homestead if you have a problem figure it out and when you do one little load at a time you will
00:35:20build a homestead
00:35:38as the fourth day begins the rainies race to make up for lost time
00:35:58there's a great sense of urgency on this homestead for us because not only is the summer coming to an
00:36:05end but we already blew a whole day with the trucks getting stuck in the mud okay right there
00:36:12call me some boards but right now restoring this old cabin and turning into something useful
00:36:18is the goal and we're well along our way while matt and jacob revitalize the remnants of the old cabin
00:36:25into a vital workshop look at this yeah that's where it's gonna be
00:36:29that's where it's gonna be okay let's go marty raises the second story walls at the new cabin site
00:36:36a little bit more okay stop right there are you excited to work yes extremely happy to work
00:36:45and at the future greenhouse so i have a plan with the foundation misty and olivia solidify the existing
00:36:53infrastructure to ensure its long-term viability so here's what i'm thinking for the sake of time
00:37:00and energy i think we just pour concrete in the four corners and i think pour a bond beam okay so we're
00:37:09going to deal with the rebar and we're going to shove trash into the cells and that way there's a barrier
00:37:15that stops the concrete from filling up this entire wall makes sense it's still going to be really solid
00:37:22this is misty rainy approved okay we're committed to the size of this foundation and it's big 12 by 20.
00:37:29so for me i'm thinking about every shortcut we can take so we don't have to fill these walls up because
00:37:35there's no way on god's green earth are we getting a cement truck here it doesn't have to be fancy but
00:37:42it's got to be functional every day is going to be really challenging on this homestead but the one thing
00:37:47we have going for us is we're alaskans we're ready whatever you want to throw at us bring it so
00:37:54there's still no water in this homestead and for me and you that's a pretty big setback because we
00:38:00needed to mix concrete and to finish this foundation so that we can start our structure so
00:38:05i think what we do is we grab five gallon buckets we jump in my dad's side by side there's water running
00:38:11down that road and i that's the only water i know of so i feel like we'll just fill up five gallon
00:38:16buckets and see if we can get them here full
00:38:23okay there's water here you ready to get home steady yeah desperate times called for desperate
00:38:31measures missy's idea for the extra water was pretty awesome okay so this isn't bad we put a pipe
00:38:37on the ground and put a bucket underneath it and we've used it to shovel more buckets full of water
00:38:44i'm excited we can use the idea if we need the extra water which is actually really cool
00:38:50this is a pretty good start i'll take it it'll settle and we'll have clean water in this part of
00:38:55alaska every single person is hauling water it's common but if i have to go to town to haul water i will
00:39:04waste hours of the day the fact that there's water even if we're capturing it just a little bit
00:39:09at a time i consider that a huge win you ready yeah i don't know if you know this about my dad
00:39:18but he drinks a lot of coffee and every time like he any job he's ever been on i've seen a little of
00:39:24this and a little of that and i think that's the thing right i'm not kidding because it works
00:39:35it's actually pretty cool we are saving ourselves a ton of time we're not filling this entire wall up
00:39:41we're just filling this top course and it's going really fast doesn't take a ton of material which
00:39:46doesn't require a ton of energy you i gotta keep it together something has to change drastically if
00:40:00they're going to survive here while james and the build crew make strides on the cabin
00:40:16marty enacts a plan to fix a treacherous 100 foot long stretch of road that's made access to the
00:40:23homestead nearly impossible after a couple of days traveling that crazy road it became a
00:40:30parent that something has to change drastically if they're going to survive here can i help you
00:40:36get this unloaded or you got a plan what are we doing so what we're gonna do untrain everything okay
00:40:42in a normal world you would address this problem with dump trucks load them full of rock keep dumping
00:40:49dumping dumping and build the road all the way through the mosh pit what whoa and it would take a lot
00:40:57of money and more importantly would take a lot of time which we don't have one thing came to mind and
00:41:03that is what if we could get a trailer a long trailer that long haul truckers drive around alaska our family
00:41:12friend kai that travels and works with us said i know a guy in fairbanks he owns 100 trucks discover
00:41:23there's two 48 foot long flat deck trailers they were going to decommission they gave them to us
00:41:3430 000 pounds pull it off
00:41:39i thought what if we could place it in there and bridge the bad swampy part i like it
00:41:46homestead miracle right here in alaska fire it up
00:41:58done let's go get the other one and then there's going to be sections of this that we don't have any
00:42:03more trailers for let's flop it in there so we're going to resort to this cutting spruce trees stacking
00:42:10them side by side classic road building method logging roads railroads many roads all over the
00:42:18world were built this way don give me a little pound
00:42:25hey hi where'd you guys come from snick up on you what do you have going on it's 100 lineal feet across
00:42:34a bridge over troubled permafrost when's the last time you guys drove through here without
00:42:39getting stuck in your truck or whatever never for real yeah no we've never been through without
00:42:45getting stuck you know i drive that thing i do would you like to try to get through today yeah
00:42:50yeah let's try jump in that rig right there let's do it what i told clint was we're not going home
00:42:56until the homesteaders can get home want to try it yeah i'd love to i can't wait let's go let's go
00:43:04come on darling may i put my arm back here thank you yes
00:43:15oh man i'm sorry is that a flatbed oh my gosh
00:43:22oh my gosh this is a flatbed trailer too oh my god you like it i love it yeah i love it
00:43:30it feels safe it does it feels so solid blown away this is out of this world i mean we thought some
00:43:37dirt might be moved never in in my wildest dreams but i thought a bridge would come in here that's just
00:43:44unreal life-changing you guys want to go home let's go home let's go
00:43:59later that day okay let me out here we go misty and olivia put their stamp on the future greenhouses
00:44:06pre-existing foundation got some pretty good progress going on it's really exciting to see the
00:44:12foundation framed in what's this thing is she did we're ready to stand your first wall everything
00:44:18that we're doing here lets us build on a future for our daughter oh my gosh i'm so excited as far as my
00:44:26family goes me and my sister weren't left very much so we've had to figure out everything on our own
00:44:34so hopefully when i die one day we can leave this for my daughter and her children
00:44:42oh oh what what are you doing hi what are you doing can i bar well they're not where these are never
00:44:51coming back can i have these two 12-footers i guess thanks i mean this is a pretty desperate hour will you
00:45:00help me bring more 12-footers here yeah let's just be honest right there is not a ton of material here
00:45:10and the fact that there was this lock foundation already here gives me a jump start on my dad and
00:45:16matt yes so we're trying to do like a 12 by 10 greenhouse with a little deck i like this and then
00:45:26we have this massive hole don't fall into it this little crawl space we'll use for cold storage
00:45:31awesome so we're ready to start framing all right
00:45:37i'm stoked i'm really excited yes i am learning how to frame
00:45:43olivia is smart and she's super hard working and she doesn't stop working thank goodness i've seen her
00:45:51at a low and now i'm seeing her at a high like it's amazing okay so this is the first of four
00:45:58good i think that's good yeah the fact that she's all in is a really good sign because that's homesteading
00:46:04you got to take the good with the bad anytime you have a little victory rejoice
00:46:12it was really cool to do this with missy and it's going to be really awesome to be like we built this
00:46:17on our homestead i love it
00:46:23here we go let me have it with the access road issues behind them marty and james redouble
00:46:30their efforts to get the family's half-built cabin ready for the upcoming winter over here bring it up
00:46:38right there hold it hold it yes sir good man i hope you're helping a lot
00:46:46the layout's right on the money somebody cut me a block working with marty is go go go it's
00:46:54it's intense buddy hey far down as you can reach on that yeah but he's shown me a lot of tricks and
00:47:03i've learned how to put up the rafters and how he adapts and uh moves on to get things done and it's
00:47:09pretty cool this is the game changer right here we're making really good progress with this workshop
00:47:26especially because this is the most hardcore homestead we've ever been to the workshop is now
00:47:33totally dried in it's roofed let's get this last plank in there there you go and getting any
00:47:41building dried in in alaska during the summertime is your first goal but we're going to go the extra
00:47:46mile so that this building never rots ever again it's not done yet okay if we just leave it
00:47:53expose plywood eventually it's just going to rot and i don't want this building to ever go back to
00:48:00the state that it was in before and so we need to wrap this with some waterproof building wrap and
00:48:05then put some proper siding on it so that it can stand the test of time and be here for many decades
00:48:11to come it's kind of crazy but we could build an alaska chainsaw mill and mill our own sighting right
00:48:18from your homestead we have a sawmill you have a sawmill yeah it's over there brand new let's go look at
00:48:25it we have a sawmill they have a mill wow man and it's a good one you've had this here and nobody's
00:48:37done one thing with that touched it what do you know about saw milling not a whole lot i don't think
00:48:42jacob realizes just how much of a game changer the sawmill is that they have on this property
00:48:49he might not know much about it now but i'll tell you what he's going to learn a lot
00:48:54i've been looking at this tree since we got here this is not firewood this is lumber you got like a 15 16
00:49:03inch around log that is something that you can make a lot of siding out of i mean you can make a beam
00:49:09out of that if you want to be a homesteader in alaska you got to mill materials from your property
00:49:18all right let's get this log on the sawmill let's get ready to homestead having an inexpensive mill on
00:49:26your property is the ultimate homesteading game changer because if you're going to be a homesteader
00:49:32you need to be as self-sustaining as possible okay can you get it pushed over a little bit
00:49:38being able to mill your own lumber is an extremely useful skill that jacob can
00:49:43learn to succeed on the homestead long after i'm gone try the throttle yeah muscle feel the horsepower
00:49:59push it
00:50:02i've been learning a lot matt showed me some techniques with the sawmill and teach me a little
00:50:06bit about milling and what lumber we can use for milling yeah now that i have these milling skills
00:50:15i'm feeling more confident about homesteading in general i think it's going to be an essential tool
00:50:19for this homestead okay this is the exciting part this is awesome what do you think man that's a
00:50:27give it a feel that's a board it's a good looking board that's pretty flat
00:50:32it looks amazing everything's coming together and looks awesome i think with the rainy's help that
00:50:41they're going to get us set up to where we can actually stay out here for multiple multiple
00:50:45multiple winters to come and be self-sustainable in all the ways that alaska lets us we're going to have
00:50:52a high-class shop over there
00:50:56all right today is a big day let's crank it up
00:51:09on the stam family homestead that's a keeper matt and jacob utilize tried and true methods to protect
00:51:16the workshop from the harsh alaskan elements
00:51:19all right man i mean look at this look at this wood yeah oh that's beautiful we've got freshly
00:51:28milled siding on the outside of the shop and jacob he's been working with me side by side learning
00:51:34a ton of new skills like how to use his homestead as a material source but there's still one more
00:51:40thing that i want to show him it's a little extra homesteading trick that we picked up along the way and
00:51:47that is shoshugiban show sugiban is an 18th century japanese wood preservation and fire prevention
00:51:58technique that involves the charring of clean wood to create a weatherproof layer while traditionally used
00:52:05on exterior siding in rural areas the unique aesthetic it produces makes it a popular choice for fencing
00:52:13furniture and flooring okay so shoshugiban has many uses but what it really does is it knocks off
00:52:21anything that's like readily flammable and it actually makes it more fireproof than not burning
00:52:28it right shoshugiban we're almost done with this shop as far as everything you can do on the outside of
00:52:35the building to keep it from rotting just get in there burn close to here but sometimes there's forest
00:52:42fires and wildfires in alaska and you can do a lot of preventative measures to deter a future
00:52:49challenge like fireproofing your building with fire so we're talking lightly toasted here golden brown
00:52:59match showed me some techniques and teach me a little bit about burning this wood
00:53:02perfectly toasted i'm really shocked with how much we've gotten done so far and right now i'm feeling
00:53:09like we're going to be able to make it through our first winter here this place is really looking
00:53:13like a real successful homestead in the future so can't wait to see the next step
00:53:23launch me some metal please with only three days remaining in the rescue
00:53:29marty and james attach metal roofing to the cabin how far is it hanging over the final step before they
00:53:36can turn their attention to winter proofing the interior your overhang is growing bring it up
00:53:42yeah that looks pretty good i'm super excited about the progress another sheet sheet's coming up this is
00:53:49happening my dream is happening you can see it and the vision is there even steven let's cut this it is
00:53:55amazing feeling who's working marty is i like it i love it hey dad hello uh yoo-hoo what's up
00:54:10we brought a buddy i recognize you good to see you again it's good to see you time's running out and we
00:54:18have very little time to do everything we need to do on this homestead before the winter hits so we
00:54:24called in a favor meet christy it's great to meet you hi christy and her two kids are a homesteading
00:54:31family right here in alaska we've built this homestead by ourselves i'm pretty proud of it
00:54:40everybody come around please and look over that edge please there's a lot of water in there you had a
00:54:46dream to move out into the remote wilds of alaska you've done it christy's legit thank you she's raised
00:54:55an amazing family it's so good to see you again yeah so good to see you again these kids are smart
00:55:01they're very qualified and they love alaska christy adams is homesteading 30 miles from here she picked a
00:55:09very harsh place how cold of temperatures have you seen since you've been homesteading oh my thermometer
00:55:15only goes to 60 below and it's bottomed out more times than i care to count what do you guys think
00:55:22are you here to work yeah yep on that note can you give us a hand absolutely all right are you afraid
00:55:28it hides christy slide it down over the screen as christy helps out with the roof installation olivia
00:55:36did you score all of these windows i did this is amazing okay so you're going to measure this one
00:55:43charlie misty charlie and olivia prepped the greenhouse windows they were actually donated from
00:55:50the apartment complex that we were staying in in town they renovated and we asked them if we could
00:55:55have them because i had plans to build a greenhouse out of windows and here we are so what's our
00:56:01measurement charlie 52 by 39 52 by 39 okay we're going to take our fish window over to the greenhouse
00:56:10yeah girls dream team okay we're going to do the rafters insulation purlins next right yeah
00:56:19yeah olivia it's looking good too the whole time i'm building this greenhouse i look over at this
00:56:29wall tent that carissa and jacob are living in and i i i can't in good conscience just like keep moving
00:56:36keep building this greenhouse and not think to myself this is insane come on over i can't just leave these
00:56:43homesteaders with a greenhouse that's not going to cut it i think the size of the greenhouse is more
00:56:49than enough than we need and i would love to do a little surprise i would love if me and you could
00:56:57work together i think this other half should be a dry cabin and i think we should gift it to carissa
00:57:03and jacob what do you think i love it they're going to be in shock this is definitely going to be the game
00:57:10changer and everything because who wouldn't be happy to have a permanent home in alaska yeah i think we
00:57:15could turn this from a greenhouse to a greenhouse house what is that i don't know the problem is
00:57:22we have two days a little tight it'll be a little tight i think it's so ambitious i think it's so
00:57:29crazy i don't even know if it can be done but what i do know is that jacob and carissa need their own
00:57:36space i don't know if we're gonna be able to pull it off we have a lot going for us so we just keep
00:57:42working yeah you ready yeah okay let's hit it where are you from georgia are you gonna quit saying
00:57:59that where do you live i live in alaska you live in alaska let's hit it yes sir with less than 72 hours
00:58:08before the rainies leave we have the entire roof on the metals on we're drying in this cabin we're
00:58:14putting house wrap on it but we need insulation marty turns his attention to winter proofing james and
00:58:22olivia's cabin they're already cut so i'm just taking one piece at a time going all the way to
00:58:31the end and stuffing it in and then going up another one the smartest money that you can throw at a house
00:58:41if you live in cold country it's insulation i asked james to put it in place by himself because
00:58:49he has to learn how's it going up there it's going pretty good good here i come a little more
00:58:55insulation to go it's good but it could be better now listen right here we have a gap that's 16 inches
00:59:03wide right about half inch deep and at least almost a half inch deep do the math there's eight inches let's
00:59:10just say that you did 10 of those like that that's 80 inches yeah now watch a one foot square it's just
00:59:18like you cut a one foot square hole right through the house to the outside yeah that didn't work
00:59:25alaska's a whole different world i don't want to make a mistake a simple mistake that's going to
00:59:29cost me a cabin you know it cost me my family to have to leave so when it comes to attacking this
00:59:36job and getting it done a plus now when there's wood exposed watch this just pull it out to the face
00:59:44pull it out to the face and that bat looks pretty good there's many steps left for the cabin to be
00:59:49finished but marty is teaching me he's showing me he's making sure i understand the the steps that
00:59:54were taken that we're not doing it for nothing and have that knowledge for later when i build something
00:59:59else when it comes december 21st the shortest day of the year when the sun may not even come up out
01:00:06there you're gonna really be happy that you went around this house one more time and dialed it in
01:00:12trust me all right carry on my wayward son yes sir
01:00:19okie dokie so what do you guys think about this camper here with the workshop project nearly complete
01:00:27pretty old i think it's full of trash yeah matt has brought jacob and dax who raises livestock nearby
01:00:35to the abandoned camper to see if the young homesteader has an idea to turn it into something
01:00:41useful we are trying to revitalize or reuse or upcycle anything that we can to give this homestead
01:00:51its best chance at having its own food it'd be really cool if you had actual bird meat whether
01:00:58it's like a meat chicken or like a quail so that's where you come in i mean i'm asking you what do you
01:01:06think about quail i think they do really good in here they'd be really good meat birds their eggs are
01:01:12really rich they taste a lot better but they're really small about three quail eggs is equivalent to one
01:01:19chicken egg are quail like chickens where they lay like one egg a day no they lay uh each of them lay
01:01:25about three a day so you can get multiple out of just like five quail obviously you can tell he's
01:01:31pretty smart how old are you 12. you're dealing with a 12 year old that really knows his stuff so
01:01:39i don't know what does that sound like to you i like it we need to make it as easy as possible for
01:01:44this homestead to get protein i'm a big fan of raising chickens and i'm also a big fan of dax
01:01:52he loves the quail and they're very strong hearty creatures and we have the perfect place
01:01:59to have both maybe like uh quailer quailer the quailer that's the name that's it
01:02:09matt's plan is to convert the interior of the trailer into a space for roosting chickens
01:02:15then he'll open the rear hatch and clear out the old kitchen equipment for use as a separate pen for the
01:02:21quail check this out grab that board prop this thing up just kind of right into this here
01:02:33so as cool as this is i don't think any of this is going to work ever again basically i just want
01:02:40to clear this out and this is more than enough space for quail
01:02:59it's just tore out the bed and i think i just found some shelves for the new shop
01:03:04the winters this far north in alaska are extremely cold and if you want to keep livestock year-round
01:03:13laying eggs that's 30 that's 30. you are going to have to have a indoor structure that's big enough
01:03:19not just for their coop area but also for them to run around and this quailer is the perfect size
01:03:27these nesting boxes are done now let's build some roosts for these chickens
01:03:33i'm feeling pretty uh overwhelmed excited uh everything's happening really really fast there's
01:03:44a lot of projects happening all at once and i'm really excited about the idea of building something
01:03:51new for my brother-in-law my sister when she got here i cried like a baby so she's always been a really
01:03:58big part of my life so i'm happy that she gets to just really live it with us and be here and
01:04:06i'd say i'm pretty grateful because this is more than i ever expected was going to happen out here
01:04:13uh matt jacob we need some help can you help us the next morning we're trying to stand this 12-foot
01:04:29wall it's gonna be really heavy misty and olivia work on their secret extension to the greenhouse
01:04:36okay let's do it together three two one go i'm going through the hole it's so easy
01:04:49okay homesteader power the surprise is jacob and carissa's cabin that is going to be built onto the
01:04:58greenhouse they don't know yet all right olivia we gotta brace it off i'm holding the wall you're bracing
01:05:05okay we are time crunched so hopefully we get it framed in so that they can have some extra space
01:05:12and they'll be nice and closed in all right okay this is the hard wall now we just have two easy
01:05:19eight foot walls and that should be no problem right right okay here we go
01:05:23my chest is heavy this is a lot i gotta keep it together today is actually really really emotional
01:05:44for me because we haven't had i guess what you could call a really stable home um in a while
01:05:54why are you what's going on
01:05:58this is the first time we're gonna have a home in like four years oh man
01:06:05to see the homestead get thrown up and and thrown together so quickly and our daughter being able to
01:06:12have her own room is a really big deal to me i'm so grateful for you guys because you're giving me
01:06:19something that i've tried so hard to give her and haven't been able to so it's it's always a lot yeah
01:06:27it's a lot i guess as a parent you just want the most for your kid and i feel like for so long i failed
01:06:37so having having those come together and saying this means the world to me because that's this is
01:06:44our home and now my baby has somewhere safe it's just really great i hope you guys know how appreciated
01:06:52you really are because holy cow i think we do now i'm so happy for this family i could not have wanted
01:07:01anything better because not only have you started that big bright future of that home setting dream
01:07:07but they get to do it together as a family here we go
01:07:13whoo crush crush
01:07:24with only a day and a half left in the rescue
01:07:27the rush to complete crucial livestock and infrastructure projects intensifies who's ready
01:07:35to build a wall marty frames in what will become the cabin's bathroom now get to the wall please
01:07:42done pound it up and surprises the stam family with a much needed off-grid amenity i'm not saying you
01:07:50don't need an outhouse but right you might need this inside the framed bathroom what is that it's a
01:07:59composting toilet oh that's so awesome i've been talking about this for years oh my god i know
01:08:06while 200 feet away christy dax and charlie arrive to supply the quailer with some livestock from their
01:08:14own homestead so let's get these chickens in there all right i've never seen a chicken want to stay
01:08:25two steps forward one step back the rooster's like hey why are you taking all my ladies
01:08:34shut it
01:08:34oh thank you that was awesome now you can't have a quailer without some quail
01:08:43cool so what type of quail are these uh these are coternix quail nice this is what we raise they're
01:08:49very hearty seven chickens 12 quail that's a lot of food thank you so much you guys are just
01:08:58you're you're the coolest alaskans i know well it sucks
01:09:05across the homestead we're gonna go inside misty leads the charge to finish the greenhouse
01:09:11what do you think of this building it's huge that will now double is jacob and carissa's living space
01:09:18insulation party let's do it let's go this is interior alaska with winter right around the corner
01:09:25and if we don't finish these guys freeze to death so no pressure rainies like it's a big deal
01:09:32to be able to finish what we started the windows are in a little bit of insulation a little bit of
01:09:37sheeting a door or two and we're getting there when it comes to minus 40 you want an airtight
01:09:45building i'm going to work on sheeting you guys work on insulation sounds good okay
01:09:49when it comes to this greenhouse a little thin little sheet of plastic on the roof isn't going
01:09:58to cut it i'm thinking metal insulation we're over building so that way springtime in interior alaska
01:10:07they don't have to wait for the ground to thaw
01:10:20okay let's wheel it in over at the new workshop
01:10:25matt and jacob put the final touches on the interior the homesteaders have a little bit of work left to
01:10:31finish this thing but i'm really happy with the way the shop turned out this way yeah they have
01:10:40a well insulated nice structure and is going to be the most useful thing for this homestead
01:10:45i guarantee it this is looking like a shop yeah it's impressive the thing i like about this shop the
01:10:50most is most everything was already here including this old cabin yeah and now look at it it's amazing
01:11:01having a ready-made structure that you know could use a little tlc was exactly what we needed to give
01:11:08you a shop space that i didn't think was even possible when i got here yeah this place is legit
01:11:16i'm actually surprised with how much we got done it's going to be real nice having a shop a workable
01:11:21space i mean you cut every one of these boards yeah that is insane this is going to be where i'm at
01:11:26probably most of the time so ready to get in here and make use of it i'm sure everybody on homestead be
01:11:32able to use it follow me welcome to the quailer yeah this is a lot of quail i love it i think it's
01:11:46awesome look at them these quail are going to give you 12 eggs a day which is about four chicken eggs
01:11:54yeah but the quail portion is only one half of what lives inside oh chickens look at them you
01:12:05got nesting boxes in there they love it and you have a place to roost all the shelves were in there
01:12:10already we just added a couple extra partitions and they pretty much had nesting boxes already built
01:12:16in there i'm really thrilled the quailer it's a really good start for a lot of quail and a few
01:12:23chickens right now but eventually the homestead is going to want to get bigger they're probably going
01:12:29to have to build a bigger barn or a bigger coop in the future to house a lot more chickens
01:12:36one week ago a collapsed old cabin and a dilapidated camper were unusable blights on the homestead
01:12:44now the cabin's been transformed into a fully functional workshop and the remodeled camper
01:12:51houses crucial off-grid livestock what does it mean to have livestock on the homestead for you everything
01:12:58i really love the quailer it looks amazing it's a great addition to the homestead i am very confident
01:13:04i'll keep the chickens and the quail alive and healthy and keep them going and laying we are going to
01:13:09survive this winter and i'm so grateful to the rainies everything that they have done for us and
01:13:14my family i'm glad we were able to squeeze this in while i'm still here but i think we have a lot of
01:13:20work left to do and i hope we can make it let's go
01:13:3020 years ago the homesteader moved out here this was whatever he had
01:13:36yes it's a little gross but i don't think this is garbage
01:13:42clearly he had himself a light bulb old homestead hack
01:13:46hitchcock mysteries oh my god
01:13:57if you come this far out in the woods this is a necessity
01:14:01diary of a madman ozzy osbourne
01:14:12oh yeah tell a lot about people about what kind of music they listen to
01:14:17you're going in i'm going to keep looking in here
01:14:32so
01:14:36yeah last day
01:14:40whoo only hours remain on the stam homestead i love the color and while misty olivia and
01:14:48carissa apply a coat of waterproof paint to the greenhouse
01:14:51yeah got a big house now how are you going to heat your home a little wood burning stove do
01:14:58you have a wood burning stove no marty has one final problem to solve in the homestead's newly
01:15:05dried-in cabin help me move this insulation
01:15:13oh that's pretty open it up that's smooth
01:15:19look how big the wood box is it's going to last longer through the night you're going to wake up in
01:15:24the morning the house is going to be warm you ever put this pipe together i have never you haven't
01:15:29good good take yours very curious about that we've come a long ways in just a few days we built a
01:15:36functional well insulated structure a good roof that doesn't leak and now they can finish everything
01:15:45else because we got them to a place where they're safe and they're warm
01:15:49okay dokie across the homestead all right olivia are you ready for this yes misty and olivia
01:16:03bring in the finishing touches to make the greenhouse structure complete
01:16:09ta-da this is so beautiful so good it's warm yes
01:16:14the greenhouse is awesome we brought in a bunch of plants today and it smells so good because of
01:16:23the herbs spicy orange thyme should we taste it absolutely oh it's got some kick
01:16:30it's got like i wasn't ready i took too much so we have to talk about water what you're looking at
01:16:37is this solar off-grid water pressurization system it's powered by solar panels and this is giving you
01:16:47the pressure you need to be able to move water to the garden to the plants that's awesome it's cool
01:16:52this is above and beyond but this isn't just a greenhouse right right
01:16:58we want to show you guys something oh yeah it's looking good in here
01:17:12we built this greenhouse but it was really hard for me to
01:17:16build the greenhouse look out these windows and see you guys living in that wall tent so we had this crazy idea
01:17:23this is you guys's cabin really yes for real yep wow
01:17:34not fancy but it's functional this is as far as we could get it and all i wanted to do was be able
01:17:39to give you a home a cabin that was dry and warm it's gonna be awesome we're gonna be milling and
01:17:45greenhouse in our butts all we love you so much we love you too i'm so excited this is our home
01:17:53mr frodo will love it in here won't he yeah it's gonna be a good spot you think it'd be cozy yeah
01:18:00yeah at my cabin in alaska i have this a solar generator no way this is the extreme homestead
01:18:08where we only had time to focus on the basics food shelter water and now when you stand back and you see
01:18:14the transformation in real time what happened in a week we all accomplished the impossible
01:18:21one week ago the stam homestead had remnants of an old foundation no source of food and an unsuitable
01:18:30plan for all four adults to survive the winter now they have a greenhouse to take advantage of the
01:18:37summer growing season and jacob and carissa have a living space within it to call their own it's about
01:18:44time that you get to start living the dream and not the nightmare you deserve all right buddy let's
01:18:58take a little walk through this project by the way this is the coolest railing ever it's amazing yeah
01:19:03that's awesome building that cabin this week it's been go go go but it's still so much weight off the
01:19:12shoulders because there was there was a lot of check marks that i probably would have missed that
01:19:17marty pointed out and we got done things that were pivotal in winter seven days ago james and olivia had
01:19:25a partially built cabin with plans for a second story that would have been impossible to complete before
01:19:31winter now they have a dried-in cabin with a modified second story that the stam family will be able to
01:19:40finish before temperatures fall
01:19:42well everyone we've come to the end and it just seems like months ago that we saw you guys stuck in
01:19:56the mud we've come a long ways from that day so how do you feel now about living out here i feel awesome
01:20:03about it you have a really good sister and you have a really good brother um they care about you guys a lot
01:20:11and they love you a lot like to me like to see all four of you standing here together that's what
01:20:16homesteading is all about so hold your family close because come this winter you're gonna need it
01:20:26you chose to try to homestead in the most hardcore place in alaska but now you are hardcore alaskan
01:20:35homesteaders and it's a beautiful thing yeah it's been a true blessing
01:20:41my family it's been pretty broken this whole time like coming up to this point and i plan to stop that
01:20:48and do it right from now on so this was a big deal so much love and so much effort went into making this
01:20:56happen and it means everything for us to be together and to be able to build our home and our family
01:21:03together and have i mean this is beautiful you guys gave me my happiness and my wholeness back
01:21:12and you don't think you understand how much that means to me and when i say thank you i really mean
01:21:18it i do you're welcome alaska isn't for everyone but some of us get it never forget
01:21:31that family comes first i'm coming in thank you
01:21:37on day one they all four stood there and told us we're gonna live here forever this is our forever
01:21:48home and i didn't believe them until i worked alongside all of them for about a week and actions
01:21:55speak louder than words now because of them they have a fighting chance
01:22:04we'll see you later a lot of people go to alaska and have an adventure of a lifetime
01:22:10these guys don't know it but they're about to start a lifetime of adventure
01:22:22since the rainies left we have been thoroughly enjoying our home and our homestead we've fully
01:22:27moved into our cabin and yanni came back she loves it on the homestead she's got her own space we have a
01:22:34working bathroom we have running water in the kitchen we get dishes done and this bridge cook
01:22:41everything for breakfast this morning on the wood burning stove and then we've got our solar panels
01:22:45set up out here we were working on getting them up on the house with the quailer we're getting eggs
01:22:50from the quail and the chickens the bridge has allowed us to be able to drive back and forth with
01:22:55my truck yeah everything's been working out really really well what you working on babe
