00:00A new procedure could be the answer to type 1 diabetes.

00:03I think it was 12 patients and they were able to be insulin free.

00:10Dr. Stanley Matthew tells Straight Arrow News islet cell transplants infuses pancreatic cells into the portal vein of the liver.

00:18Once infused into the liver, they begin producing insulin.

00:21The issue with tests has always been when they did islet cell transplants, your body tends to reject it.

00:28And the immunosuppressants that have been used can raise blood sugars and cause other problems.

00:34Of the 12 patients trialed, they were able to go without insulin for several months.

00:39A recent medical review reports therapies like this are a close step to putting an end to type 1.
