00:00My name is Maiken Bjurkan and I'm a research professor at Nolan Research Institute.

00:05I work with coastal communities in many different projects.

00:14Empower us is about how we can empower coastal communities to face all the changes.

00:23They are the ones experiencing a lot of the challenges

00:26but sometimes it feels as if the solutions are made more for different contexts

00:33such as big cities or less peripheral regions.

00:37They want to live here. This is the place that they have.

00:41They are living their best life.

00:43But all the national programs or international plans

00:48such as the Sustainable Development Goals and so on,

00:51even if they have the best intentions,

00:53sometimes when you look at it from a local level,

00:56the way that it's put to work, it doesn't really work here.

01:02Transport is a big challenge.

01:04There's a lot of cancellations, the weather is harsh and so on.

01:08If you can't get to your hospital appointment,

01:10if you can't go and see your family elsewhere

01:13or be connected to the mainland,

01:15then you're isolated and then you can't stay here.

01:18There's threats to closing the schools.

01:21People are moving away.

01:24Exactly because when you don't have a school,

01:27you won't have new families moving here.

01:29If you don't have a school or kindergarten for your kids,

01:31this isn't seen as a viable place to live your life.

01:35So for the people living here,

01:37these are like the blood veins that kind of make you connected to the rest of society.

01:42and you need that in order to be able to stay here.

01:46and you need that in order to stay here.
