00:02:48Come on, Ed.
00:03:18You forgot those go-down things.
00:03:31She sure would have bawled me out.
00:03:33Listen, son.
00:03:34Don't you let that art teacher put anything over on you.
00:03:36I sure don't.
00:03:37I'd put over on her.
00:03:39Freddie, you want to go up the road with me a piece?
00:03:42Where are you going?
00:03:43And it looks like it's going to shower,
00:03:45and I want to cover that new corn if there's still.
00:03:48Gee, I was going to go after Jenny.
00:03:50All right.
00:03:54All right, Dad.
00:03:55All right.
00:03:56Oh, my poor little kid.
00:04:20I'm a-coming, Jenny.
00:04:21Oh, Freddie.
00:04:30Jesus, she's mean.
00:04:34Gosh, but you look funny.
00:04:35Oh, Freddie.
00:04:37Don't be mad, Jenny.
00:04:45Jenny, you know better than to get in there with that old sow.
00:04:49But, Daddy, the little pig was stuck in the mud, and he was drowning.
00:04:53Next time you call me.
00:04:55Get to the barrel and wash yourself.
00:05:00Wait a minute, Jenny.
00:05:01I'm funny.
00:05:03Well, no, but you didn't look kind of silly in there with all those pigs.
00:05:07Anyway, you ought to know better.
00:05:09You can't drown a pig in mud.
00:05:11Well, maybe you can't.
00:05:13But, Daddy says that in this country, the pig is a gentleman that pays a rent.
00:05:18That wasn't going to take any chances.
00:05:20Hey, wait a minute.
00:05:21Wait a minute.
00:05:27Wait a minute.
00:05:28What are you doing?
00:05:43What are you doing?
00:05:43Gee, Jenny, why don't you wear your hat?
00:06:03It's raining.
00:06:04Just a couple of drops.
00:06:06That'll be our time we get to school.
00:06:08Freddie?
00:06:09Yes, Jenny?
00:06:10Did you study your spelling lesson?
00:06:12No, it's no use.
00:06:15Anyway, my dad says that teacher don't know how to spell.
00:06:18Why, Freddie, naughty.
00:06:19My teacher knows all the words in all the books and all the words.
00:06:23Aw.
00:06:24I don't care what your dad says.
00:06:26My teacher says you have to learn how to spell.
00:06:38Was that a shot?
00:06:40Yeah, right down there.
00:06:42It looks like Dad.
00:07:05Daddy.
00:07:05Daddy.
00:07:07He's been shot.
00:07:08Jenny, go for help.
00:07:09Hurry.
00:07:10Hurry.
00:07:10Yes, Freddie.
00:07:13Daddy.
00:07:14Daddy.
00:07:16You all right?
00:07:18Daddy.
00:07:19Speak to me.
00:07:21Where are you going this morning, Ira?
00:07:22I'm aiming to go up to the stair.
00:07:26Buddy.
00:07:27Daddy.
00:07:28Buddy.
00:07:33Freddie's mother's been shot.
00:07:34Mike?
00:07:35Shot?
00:07:35Where's he at?
00:07:36He's south in the woods.
00:07:37Come on.
00:07:37Come on.
00:07:38Come on.
00:07:38Come on.
00:07:39He's at first camp.
00:07:49Just out the road.
00:07:55He's over there.
00:08:00I think he's hurt bad, Ira.
00:08:02I don't know.
00:08:02The bullet went clean through his shoulder.
00:08:10It's going to be all right, Mike.
00:08:11It's going to be all right.
00:08:13Oh, Freddie.
00:08:17Freddie, he's not bad.
00:08:19Heard?
00:08:20We'll take care of him.
00:08:21Now, you and Ginny go on to school, dear.
00:08:23Father, I guess I was hit.
00:08:34You're going to be all right.
00:08:36I reckon so.
00:08:39Mike, tell me who shot you.
00:08:41And I'll follow him to his grave.
00:08:43No, Ira.
00:08:45It's my fight.
00:08:46I'll take care of that skunk when I'm nothing about.
00:08:50Mike, we've got to get him home.
00:08:53Oh, easy.
00:08:56Please.
00:08:57Please, easy.
00:08:58Easy.
00:08:58You see the children?
00:09:24Julie Colton and Frederick Naughty, please come here.
00:09:28What excuse have you both for being late?
00:09:38My old man got hurt.
00:09:40Ginny here had to go for help.
00:09:43Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, Frederick.
00:09:45Was it serious?
00:09:46No.
00:09:47I think he'll be all right.
00:09:49He should have a doctor, teacher.
00:09:51There's no doctor in his community now.
00:09:53Later, perhaps.
00:09:55Go on back to your seat.
00:09:55Go.
00:09:55Go.
00:09:58Quiet.
00:10:19Alex Cross, why did you do that?
00:10:21Teacher, it was a pigeon, and he dropped it on my book.
00:10:29Quiet.
00:10:30Alex, you come up here.
00:10:32Vonta, Lila, Bill, for your spelling lesson.
00:10:40Vonta, you spell the word butter.
00:10:42Vonta, B-U-T-T-T-E-R.
00:10:47Vonta, B-U-T-T-E-R.
00:10:47Correct.
00:10:48Lila, the word banish.
00:10:50V-A-N-I-N-H.
00:10:59That was a very good try, Lila.
00:11:00You try it, Bill.
00:11:02Vonta, B-A-N-D-H-I-S-H.
00:11:09You'd better take your book home with you tonight.
00:11:12Alex, you try it.
00:11:13Banish.
00:11:14B-A-N-I-S-H.
00:11:17Correct.
00:11:18Now go back to your seats.
00:11:22All right.

00:11:27All right, Tom, spell the word catalogue.
00:11:34C-A-T-A-L-O-Q-E.
00:11:38You didn't study your lesson, did you?
00:11:40No.
00:11:41Jeanette, the word mountain.
00:11:44M-O-T-I-A-N.
00:11:49You better study your lesson more thoroughly next time.
00:11:53Jenny, the word automobile.
00:11:55A-U-T-O-M-O-B-I-L-E.
00:11:58Correct.
00:11:59Freddie, the word milking.
00:12:03M-I-L-K-G-I-N-G.
00:12:07Freddie, you didn't study your spelling lesson last night, did you?
00:12:11I tried to make him, Miss Carol, but he wouldn't.
00:12:15See that you studied tonight, young man.
00:12:23Teacher.
00:12:24All right, George.
00:12:24Teacher, teacher.
00:12:28All right, Cecil.
00:12:33So take out your Rippertick books.
00:12:37Hey, Cecil.
00:12:39This one's Ma.
00:12:41This is Pa.
00:12:42Charles!
00:12:54Darling!
00:13:00Are you really glad to see me?
00:13:02Why didn't you tell me you were coming?
00:13:04I just couldn't stay another minute down there in the city with you up here in this god-forsaken country.
00:13:09You know why I stay here.
00:13:15But you promised that when I became established in my profession, you'd marry me.
00:13:19Yes.
00:13:20I know.
00:13:22Well, now I'm assistant district attorney.
00:13:24You can't stall me this time.
00:13:26Oh, I am proud of you, Charles.
00:13:28But I haven't accomplished what I set out to do.
00:13:31Now, you're wasting your time.
00:13:33No, dear, I'm not.
00:13:34Yes, you are.
00:13:36All right.
00:13:37Now, look here, Ivy.
00:13:39You can't change the customs of these people.
00:13:42Others before you have tried.
00:13:43But I was born here.
00:13:45They're my people.
00:13:47My blood.
00:13:48But you've been out in the world.
00:13:49You've gone to school.
00:13:50Yes, I was fortunate in taking an education.
00:13:53Now, it's my duty to help them.
00:13:55All the education in the world wouldn't help them.
00:13:59But you could help him.
00:14:01If you really love me.
00:14:03Well, of course I love you.
00:14:04But what could I do?
00:14:07You can do a lot, dearest.
00:14:09What, for instance?
00:14:10Just continue to love me.
00:14:13And be patient.
00:14:15Patient?
00:14:15I've been waiting patiently for the last five years.
00:14:19I suppose you want me to wait until I'm an old man.
00:14:22Charles, I'm going to fight for these people
00:14:24until the state realizes that child marriage must be stopped.
00:14:29Sometimes I wonder if you...
00:14:31if you really do love me, Ivy.
00:14:32The purest blood in our land flows in the veins of these mountain people.
00:14:50And yet the government does less for them
00:14:52than for any group within its boundaries.
00:14:56Government neglect is one cause.
00:14:58And as governor of this state,
00:15:00I beg of you to realize
00:15:02that this child marriage law
00:15:03will be a wedge to free these mountain people
00:15:05from adverse social and economic conditions.
00:15:12How do you do, Thomas?
00:15:16The law goes on, Miss Carol.
00:15:22Sadie, how's the baby?
00:15:24Pretty good, Miss Carol.
00:15:25Well, we're missing you at school.
00:15:27Well, my husband says
00:15:28there's nothing finer than a bunch of young'uns.
00:15:31But, Sadie,
00:15:32don't you realize
00:15:33that at 25
00:15:34you'll be an old woman?
00:15:37If that school mom
00:15:38don't quit preaching our women folks,
00:15:40she's fixing to get herself
00:15:41into a mess of trouble.
00:15:41I thought perhaps
00:15:47all the women of the village
00:15:48could get together and...
00:15:49We don't throw men
00:15:50in the no-fariner's business.
00:15:52Why should you in ours?
00:15:54I'm not a foreigner.
00:15:55I'm as much a mountain person
00:15:57as any of you.
00:15:58And I'm fighting
00:15:59for the improvement
00:16:00of this community.
00:16:03Now listen, Mrs. Haggerty.
00:16:05You're a mother.
00:16:06You have seven children
00:16:07of your own.
00:16:08You can't jump from childhood
00:16:17into womanhood
00:16:18by saying I do.
00:16:20We got them, I am young.
00:16:22We're short of women.
00:16:23Look,
00:16:24isn't it better
00:16:24to have a woman for 30 years
00:16:26than a child for 15?
00:16:28What I'm trying
00:16:36to make you understand
00:16:37is that you can't
00:16:39fight nature's law.
00:16:41Burying children
00:16:41is a woman's job.
00:16:43Child marriage must go.
00:16:47Your Excellency,
00:16:49this law must pass.
00:16:51Oh, I beg Your Excellency
00:16:52to endorse Miss Carol's bill.
00:16:53Hey, Happy!
00:17:07Come on down!
00:17:09All right, Angelo.
00:17:10Angelo.
00:17:23Hey, you!
00:17:27Did you get that corn
00:17:28up to the Higgins?
00:17:30Yeah.
00:17:31Well, where's the money?
00:17:32I'm giving the money
00:17:33to Ira.
00:17:35Well, Ira's my partner.
00:17:36It's as much mine
00:17:37as it is his, isn't it?
00:17:38I'm still giving
00:17:39the money to Ira.
00:17:40Don't give me any
00:17:41of your lip.
00:17:41Come on.
00:17:41Come on, give me that money.
00:17:42I won't do it.
00:17:44Why, you...
00:17:44Hey, leave him alone.
00:17:50Leave him alone, I tell you.
00:17:52Why, you poor cent.
00:17:53No, no, no.
00:18:03Now then, I'll have
00:18:04that money.
00:18:05I won't do it.
00:18:06Give me your...
00:18:07Now then, I'm going
00:18:12to give you the same dough.
00:18:13No, Jake, don't...
00:18:14Jake!
00:18:15Put him down!
00:18:19Who do you think
00:18:20you're talking to?
00:18:21You, you slimy weasel.
00:18:24How many times
00:18:25must I tell you
00:18:26to leave him be?
00:18:31So...
00:18:32You want to play?
00:18:34I've been waiting
00:18:34a long time
00:18:36for this chance.
00:18:37And now I'm a
00:18:38coward, you dirty junk!
00:18:39I'm going to...
00:18:52Get up!
00:18:53Get up!
00:18:53Get up!
00:18:53Get up!
00:18:54Get up!
00:18:54All right, all right.
00:19:23This time I lose.
00:19:25But there'll be a next time.
00:19:27Thank God I'll stay off next time.
00:19:42They'll have to pour down their corn liquor
00:19:44and take it over to the coop's farm.
00:20:16I'm recording.
00:20:22Someday I'm going to kill you.
00:20:37I wonder what could have happened to Jake.
00:20:39He should have been here by now.
00:20:40Maybe he's down at the school, Marms,
00:20:42seeing whether she's out preaching against us marrying young'uns.
00:20:45Gosh darn her education anyway.
00:20:47Why don't she mind her own business?
00:20:49I'm for driving her out of town.
00:20:51Yeah, Tarn Feather's rescue business.
00:20:53Oh, you're getting yellow, Clump.
00:20:55I'd put her in boiling oil and watch her fry
00:20:57if it weren't she one of our kind.
00:20:59Why, she's the cause of me losing that kid, Nellie Jensen.
00:21:06Jake, your face looks like it's gone through a thrash machine.
00:21:09What happened?
00:21:15Oh, I had a run-in with a bunch of hijackers in the Corn Valley.
00:21:21A little bit too much for me, that's all.
00:21:23Is everybody here now?
00:21:24We're all here.
00:21:25Good.
00:21:26What do we do now?
00:21:28You, Ezra.
00:21:29Lem, Jeremiah, and Clump.
00:21:32Go down through Bone Valley
00:21:33and meet us at the Bear Cave near the Tunnel 3.
00:21:36Take your mess along
00:21:37and be sure and bring those forces along, too.
00:21:39All right, Jake.
00:21:40Be careful now.
00:21:49Okay, where's my mask?
00:21:51Oh, there it is.
00:21:52Put out this fire.
00:21:55All right, let's go.
00:21:56All right, let's go.
00:22:26Who's there?
00:22:51Who is it?
00:22:52Who is it?
00:23:22Who is it?
00:23:23Who is it?
00:23:23Get it.
00:23:24Get it.
00:23:28What?
00:23:35Stop!
00:23:42What have I done?
00:23:43Happy
00:23:52Happy
00:23:53All right, Jake Bobby
00:24:03You'll play for this
00:24:04I know who you are
00:24:06Come on
00:24:08Hey, wait for me
00:24:16Get out
00:24:38Get out
00:24:39Get out
00:24:39Get out
00:24:39Get out
00:24:39What have I done?
00:25:09They're going to a spooky hollow
00:25:14Come on, Happy
00:25:15Chris, shut up
00:25:40Shut up, Chris
00:25:43They've taken a spoon, Mom
00:26:01Into the mountains
00:26:02Well, who?
00:26:03What for?
00:26:04Don't touch it, Dad
00:26:05Mommy, Daddy, Mommy
00:26:07What's the matter?
00:26:08They came to the school teacher
00:26:10Who, Dad?
00:26:10I don't know
00:26:11I was asleep
00:26:12Her screams woke me up
00:26:14Then Happy and I ran up to the pine oak
00:26:16And we saw a lot of road figures with torches
00:26:18I left Happy to trail him
00:26:20And he's to meet us at Devil's Rock
00:26:21We'll take the shortcut through Devil's Grouch
00:26:37What are you going to do to me?
00:27:05What have I done?
00:27:06Well, we've given you plenty of warning not to meddle with our customs
00:27:09And to stick to your own ABCs
00:27:12I teach what is right
00:27:13We have our own ideas about what's right and what's wrong in this fiction
00:27:17How dare you bring me here?
00:27:20I'll have a law upon you
00:27:21A law?
00:27:22We're the law in these here mountains
00:27:24And I'll show you
00:27:25Take your dirty hands off, Miss Carol
00:27:42Or I'll puzzle all of you
00:27:43Get down the tree and help Miss Carol
00:27:49Step out and line up against the light
00:27:55Think you can shoot straight?
00:28:02You try me
00:28:03I'm just itching to plug one guy I thinks down there
00:28:06Make a false move and I'll let you have it
00:28:10You take this gun

00:45:00Oh, come on, Jess.
00:45:04It's only a wolf on a prowl after the rain.
00:45:11That's no wolf.
00:45:12It's a dog.
00:45:13I bet you somebody's croaked.
00:45:15It's only Moses.
00:45:35Let's go down.
00:45:35Oh, come on.
00:45:44Oh, come on.
00:45:45It'll be easy for Jake to get the best of flora now that Ira's gone.
00:46:14I got my suspicions.
00:46:38This will go hard with flora.
00:46:46I'm sorry for Jenny.
00:46:47Poor kid.
00:46:48And these last rites are for one Ira Colton, esteemed member of our community, healed by unknown hands.
00:47:09We of the Colton's clan are not worried about his soul going to heaven, but woe unto the guilty one whose hands are stained with Ira's blood.
00:47:24And as God said to Noah, for whosoever shivered man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed.
00:47:37Amen.
00:47:39Amen.
00:48:07What are you aiming at?
00:48:26Flora, I've decided to take myself a wife.
00:48:29Why do you come to me?
00:48:31Oh, don't get scared.
00:48:32I don't want you.
00:48:33I want to talk to you, though, about her.
00:48:36You mean, Jenny?
00:48:37That's right.
00:48:50What's the matter, Jenny?
00:48:51Your face is all puckered up.
00:48:53Oh, I'm nothing.
00:48:54That's Jake Bowlby's in the cabin with Mother.
00:48:58I shouldn't leave her alone with him.
00:49:01Oh, come on.
00:49:01He won't bite her.
00:49:02We'll take a short swim and come right back.
00:49:07All right.
00:49:10All right.
00:49:11That's the way it's going to be, then, because you're going to hang.
00:49:14And you look pretty with a rope around your neck.
00:49:18Now I know.
00:49:20Why, you blame me for killing Ira.
00:49:21Ira, Jay, they're going to get my Ginny.
00:49:24You ain't.
00:49:25No?
00:49:26Well, I'll testify that I saw you kill Ira.
00:49:28You lie.
00:49:29And you know it.
00:49:30And everybody else will know it.
00:49:31Yeah, but they'll believe Long and Ezra and Jeremiah.
00:49:35I'm going to the county seat tomorrow.
00:49:37And that'll give you plenty of time to make up your mind.
00:49:43And remember, it won't take the marshal long.
00:49:51We're in a still.
00:50:07Howdy, boys.
00:50:09Hi, Jake.
00:50:11Well, how does it feel?
00:50:12We're caught in a pretty youngin' in the community.
00:50:14I don't see how you do it.
00:50:16I thought you and Nicole can grow on the oats.
00:50:18Not at all.
00:50:19Laura thinks that I'll make Ginny a right good husband.
00:50:22Well, Jake, you'd better be a hurrying,
00:50:23because the schoolmarm has a firm sweetheart
00:50:25fighting to pass a marriage law at the state capitol.
00:50:28Yeah, and if it does,
00:50:30you'll be courting Ginny for seven long years.
00:50:33Yeah?
00:50:33I'll take care of that.
00:50:34Ginny.
00:50:57Ginny.
00:51:04Look what I brought you.
00:51:10Now, listen, Ginny.
00:51:12I'm going to be your husband.
00:51:15And you want to be nice to me,
00:51:16because if you don't,
00:51:17you know what'll happen to your ma.
00:51:22I'll try.
00:51:24Oh, and there's just one more thing.
00:51:26I don't want you to be seeing this pretty nutty no more.
00:51:31Do you understand?
