00:00The Met Gala is considered the party of the year, but it wasn't always the major A-list event and
00:05fashion spectacle that it is today. So, how did it all start? Let's dive into the history of the
00:10Met Gala. The gala serves to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute,
00:16and the first fundraiser was a midnight dinner held in 1948 that cost just $50 a ticket. It was
00:22the brainchild of fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, who also played a role in launching
00:26New York Fashion Week. Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour has long been known as the Queen of the
00:30Met Gala as she oversees the party, but that wasn't always the case. When former Vogue Editor-in-Chief
00:35Diana Vreeland served as a special consultant to the Costume Institute from 1972 to 1989,
00:41she helped grow the event and encouraged celebrities to get involved. During Vreeland's tenure, the gala
00:47became a major celebration for both the social and art worlds, with luminaries such as Jackie O
00:52and Pat Buckley serving as co-chairs. Wintour took over as co-chair in 1995. According to the Met,
00:58Wintour has built the event into one of the most visible and successful fundraisers in the world,
01:04drawing guests from the worlds of fashion, film, society, sports, business, and music.
01:09The Met Gala also wasn't always held on the first Monday in May. The event didn't assume its official
01:14date until 2001. Since then, the Met Gala has gifted pop culture lovers with countless iconic
01:20moments, from Rihanna's golden cape that became a pizza meme, and Kim Kardashian's infamous Marilyn
01:26moment, to Lady Gaga's quick change routine, and Zendaya's princess transformation. So, what will
01:32today's biggest stars wear to the Met Gala this year? We'll just have to keep our eyes on those
01:36famous steps. For much more on the Met Gala, head to THR.com. For The Hollywood Reporter News,
