3 Days in Arctic Survival Shelter - Solo Bushcraft Camping & Blacksmithing. -
Transcript
00:01Luke here with the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel and welcome to the interior of
00:05Alaska. I'm going to be camping in the snow without a tent for the next three
00:08days. I'll be building survival shelters, sleeping under animal hides, making
00:13bushcraft projects next to the fire, and cooking amazing food.
00:30Well, we've had a really weird winter here in Alaska, and it's been cold and hot and
00:49cold again. But the good news is the snow is not too deep and the swamps are all
00:53frozen, so I can really get out and explore places I otherwise couldn't
00:56excess.
01:03I got myself pretty wet. Looks like there's a little ditch or creek here, so I
01:08stopped to get out and walk it before I try to take the K truck into it. And
01:12there's a booby trap right here. Look at that. It's just snow floating on water.
01:20Then I walked onto it and sunk into mud up to here. I think I'll just go around.
01:26I've been driving around for about two and a half hours. I think it's about time to look
01:34around for a place to camp.
01:35There we go.
01:36I'm going to look around for some dead trees.
01:41I'm going to look around for some dead trees.
01:43I'm going to look around for some dead trees.
01:48I'm going to look around for some dead trees.
01:49I'm going to look around for some dead trees.
01:55It's going to be pitch black by 4pm today. I have about an hour and a half before sunset,
02:23and it's really hard to find dead trees in the dark.
02:40There's an invasive beetle called the Japanese spruce bark beetle. It's wiping out a lot of
02:44the spruce trees in this area. A lot of the trees are sick or dead. In the summertime this
02:49place is a massive forest fire hazard. So burning up the dead trees in the wintertime can actually
02:54be a real good thing.
02:56Seems like a lot of wood, but it's not. If you want to keep warm for 18 hours of darkness,
03:08plus have a shelter, it takes a lot. Sun's setting. I got to bust out my lights. I use these bicycle
03:14lights that have a GoPro mount. I got this on a trip to Kyoto when Tommy was just little.
03:19They're just little.
03:26Gotta get a fire going and dry my pants off.
03:53It's not a big deal while I'm moving around, but once I stop to eat dinner it's gonna get real cold.
04:11Always gotta make sure to put your flint and steel away.
04:14It's so easy to get focused on the fire and then drop it in the snow and lose it.
04:22Everything's covered in snow.
04:34Everything's covered in ice and snow so I put the firewood around the fire until it starts to catch.
04:39Then I put it out and stack it up next to the fire.
04:41Next to the fire.
04:43Let's go.
04:45Let's go.
04:47Let's go.
04:49Let's go.
04:51Let's go.
04:53Let's go.
05:03Oh, my God.
05:33I don't know.
06:03I don't have enough limbs to cover it all the way to the top, but that'll make a good
06:27windbreak
06:34Now all this wood covered in ice and snow we're going to prop it up against the heat
06:59reflector and dry it out just looked at my clock and it's 7 30 so just about five hours
07:14to cut down all these trees and build this shelter pretty proud of that that's a lot of wood
07:19I cut shelters obviously not as good as it could be but it's good as it's going to be
07:24tonight I hang up my clothes and let them dry my gloves are wet boots are wet these logs are
07:33frozen and covered in ice makes them really cold and it's going to get me wet so we got
07:38to dry them
07:47there you go I brought some caribou hides to sleep on I'm getting old I need I need padding
08:07brought along a buffalo hide too as a blanket all right need to get some dinner made
08:19tell you what I really like these heat reflectors when you build a wall behind your fire it absorbs
08:42the heat of the fire and then reflects it back towards you but more importantly it acts as a
08:46windbreak and keeps the wind from blowing the smoke in your face it's really nice all right
08:52for dinner I've got moose fajitas I prepped up all the meat and seasonings and vegetables and
08:57everything in this little package and froze it now I'm just going to put it in a pot of boiling water
09:00to heat it back up not a bad meal when you don't have time to do fancy stuff
09:04got a moose fajita with a little bit of guacamole no I'm hungry it's about 9 p.m. I haven't eaten since breakfast
09:21oh that's good all right let's do the dishes
09:33I have a little bit of firewood but not enough to get me through the rest of the night I need to go cut
09:50some more firewood oh I'm gonna sit here and eat some chocolate covered almonds and dry my boots out
10:12oh oh I'm so tired oh it's already 10 p.m. I gotta get to bed here soon
10:17now if I go to bed with wet socks my feet are gonna be so cold and if I don't dry my boots out
10:30they'll freeze in the morning and I won't be able to get them on because they'll just be like a solid
10:34is a rock so I've got to go and dry out my boots dry out my pants dry out my socks
10:39there's a steam coming off of there
10:42all right it's time to cuddle up with my buffalo hide go to sleep probably have to stoke the fire
10:54every three four hours but that's pretty normal all right guys I'll see you in the morning
10:59hey good morning oh this fire has been keeping this place really warm keep forgetting how cold
11:09it is and then the fire will die down I'll be like dang it's really cold out
11:13as long as the fire's roaring this place holds the heat pretty well
11:18all right I think it's time to get up trying to make some breakfast
11:48I'm gonna rub some butter on this warm tortilla and put cinnamon sugar on it
12:08that's good if you ever had cinnamon toast or a
12:18so papilla kind of tastes like that
12:19got some steel-cut Irish oatmeal here these are good stuff a little butter brown sugar and raisins
12:29it's about 9 30 in the morning and you can start to see a little bit of light out
12:36Sun's gonna rise in about 45 minutes oh well that was good I gotta do the dishes now
12:42it's about 10 o'clock it looks like the Sun's up need to get to work here
12:53alrighty
13:07so
13:10so
13:13so
13:19so
13:21so
13:25so
13:28so
13:31I can't believe it!
14:01this thatching only does a marginal job of keeping the wind out but once you get a little bit of
14:26snow on top of it then it's absolutely airtight the trick is that you got to make it thick enough
14:30and far enough away from the fire that when you've got a nice big roaring fire in here you don't have
14:35drips of water from melting snow hopefully we got it right
15:00well that's not too shabby that's a proper wall i think the next thing i want to do is improve
15:11my bed it was a little bit narrow last night i kept trying to roll off i wouldn't mind having
15:17that foot rest a little bit bigger too
15:19dry out this log before i put it in my bed
15:26i piled up a bunch of logs over there as a bit of a windbreak to keep cold air from going underneath
15:35my bed now they got the shelter built i don't think it's really necessary so i'm going to use
15:39that for my firewood tonight
16:09shelter's feeling nice and tidy the bed's feeling better i got more of a platform
16:22got some firewood drying i think it's time to eat some food
16:26a friend of mine gave me these hot dogs i think they're made out of caribou excited to try them
16:42out oh smell good that's a good hot dog i think i worked up a two hot dog appetite
17:01but i want to do a little project i want to build a cooking griddle this is a 22 gauge weldable steel
17:15that's not very even
17:20it's an ugly freehand oval right there
17:25i got this little stump anvil right here
17:33you don't need anything fancy like this a rock will do
17:39just put a little lip on the edge of it
17:55knocked off all the sharp bits now it's really stiff and rigid and your food won't spill off the edge
18:00got a little bit of steel rod here heat that up in the fire
18:25there we go
18:46there we go
19:00there we go
19:05all right
19:19that's a little griddle it's kind of ugly shaped but that's what happens when you do it freehand
19:33but now we got to season it got a little peanut oil and get the handles too
19:40let that bake
19:46do a couple layers
19:52seasoned frying pan it's ready for cooking well it's about 6 30 and i think it's time
20:11for dinner so for dinner i got something special got king crab legs last winter i went up to
20:17gnome with my son nathan and we caught king crab through the ice
20:23i've got this little jar with uh garlic and butter in it just kind of loosen the lid
20:28sit that right by the fire
20:37oh look at the size of that crab leg
20:44oh that was so warm and delicious when you cook the crabs over the fire too it makes their shells
21:02brittle makes it a lot easier to shell them you just use your hands
21:10you gotta eat quick things cool off really quick around here
21:16look at that that's just from one knuckle barely fits in the jar
21:24oh that's messy but good
21:25oh i got a full belly in the big fire i'm gonna listen to an audiobook just kind of relax for an
21:36hour or so before bedtime
21:40well it's getting late i should hop into bed definitely feel like this shelter is a lot warmer
21:46than yesterday the air is just not moving as much i got the heat reflecting off this sidewall and
21:52the whole thing's just a better wind block
21:57it's nice having a little bit more of a platform to stand on i got more room to dry my boots
22:05forgot to dry my socks out before going to bed but uh with this nice little step right here i can
22:10just stick my feet out they're all nice and toasty i want to put the camera down i'll see you guys in a
22:16little bit i had to stoke the fire a couple times but stayed warm but my back is sore
22:31oh oh my back i feel like i was run over by a truck but i'm warm
22:36well it's about 7 30 i think it's time to go test out that griddle and make some breakfast
22:57okay corned beef hash oh it's so frozen
23:06yeah it's pretty non-stick slid right off
23:36corned beef and hash egg sandwich
23:51oh that is so good tell you what that little skillet worked really well pretty easy to make too
23:58oh that was delicious i wouldn't mind another one of those
24:06i'll tell you that was a good meal i'm definitely gonna have to do that one again
24:17but uh i think it's time to get packed up i'm gonna try to get home by 12 and i've got a long
24:23way to drive to get there so i think i better not wait for the sun to come up i'll tell you what i
24:27like my little griddle worked really well all right this is a really nice shelter i'm curious
24:38to see how it performs in bad weather though maybe i can come back during a snowstorm and
24:42see how the shelter does all right all right let's see if the car starts when it gets really cold my
24:52k truck freezes up and won't start but uh it's a bit of a ways home so uh hopefully it'll start up on me
24:58oh sure is nice when things work
25:10yeah you definitely want to make sure that car is working before you put your fire out
25:17all right
25:24gotta work out my backing up
