Take a look back at Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, Maya Hawke, Joseph Quinn and David Harbour reading, confirming and denying 'Stranger Things' fan theories from Reddit. Is the Upside Down the future? Did the US government drop an atomic bomb on Hawkins? Are demogorgons descendants of human beings? Will Eleven end up being the villain?

00:00Hi, I'm David Harbour. I play Chief Jim Hopper on Stranger Things, and today I've been asked to do Stranger Things fan theories on Reddit to discuss your fan theories.
00:10It is an open-ended show. Some of these theories may be close to the truth. They may be far away from the truth.
00:16I will offer my insight, what I think, so these are not spoilers. These will just be hypotheticals from my point of view.
00:23The Upside Down is actually the future. The Upside Down is actually the future. When Will is taken there, he's impregnated by an alien creature.
00:38Impregnated is interesting. When Will returns to our time, he births the slug, which in turn develops into the demogorgon,
00:46which in turn is aware of how powerful Eleven is because it inherits that knowledge from Will.
00:53or reads his mind. Sometime later, the Thessalhydra emerges, and the United States government is forced to drop a nuclear weapon on Hawkins.
01:03Hawkins is destroyed, but the demogorgon survives. Eleven accidentally uses her remote viewing abilities to see into this future,
01:11thereby causing the demogorgon to travel back in time and hunt her down. It instead takes Will, thereby restarting the events we see in the show.
01:20Wow. I love this theory. This is crazy and insane. You know, this could be true. I mean, I like the idea of the Upside Down actually being the future.
01:30I do think, I personally don't know, I think that the Upside Down will be revealed to be a specific place or time.
01:37I don't know about the U.S. government dropping a nuclear weapon on Hawkins because, oh, because if Thessalhydra emerges, I guess we wouldn't drop a nuclear weapon.
01:44I guess that would be like the weapon of choice if you're going to fight some intergalactic monster.
01:48I like the idea that this character actually births the events and then restarts the events.
01:55This kind of, I think it's kind of like a time loop element that I think is very interesting, but I don't know, I don't know how much of this is true.
02:04I mean, the one thing that you have hit on is that the Upside Down is something specific.
02:11It may be the future. It may be something else. It exists as a reflection of Hawkins, and so it has certain things, like the library.
02:20I mean, it has certain things in it that are Hawkins. Yeah, it's a very interesting theory.
02:24At Game Demon 24 asks, what is a Demogorgon?
02:29My theory on it comes from a scientific and evolutionary perspective.
02:32I believe that somewhere thousands upon thousands of years ago, humans did inhabit the Upside Down
02:39in a very similar incarnation to whatever humanity looked like at the time,
02:43until that is some natural disaster occurred in the Upside Down to make the atmosphere toxic.
02:49The Demogorgon is a descendant of human beings that evolved according to the toxic conditions of the Upside Down.
02:58We have Homo Neanderthalus in both realms, then we turn to Homo Sapiens in our realm,
03:04and Homo Demogorgus in the Upside Down realm.
03:07I love this. I think it's amazing. I don't have any knowledge of this, and I think you're probably very far off.
03:16I think the time one is probably a little more apropos or something like that.
03:20The idea that this realm has existed and that beings have actually evolved over at least 100,000 years,
03:27I feel like why would it have emerged in 1983 in Indiana?
03:31I think that the Upside Down is more related to the specific events of this particular town, of this particular area.
03:39I don't think it's its own entity that has existed for a long period of time.
03:43I think it coincides with the idea of Eleven's powers opening this gate.
03:48But I think it's a really interesting theory, and I love it, and you should write your own show.
03:52At Convex thinks the source of the Upside Down is Terry Ives.
03:58If Elle, a powerful psychic, was strong enough to open the gate to the Upside Down,
04:03it seems plausible that if her mama is also a psychic,
04:07the intense grief of losing her baby could have caused her to unknowingly create a distorted reality of despair.
04:13Wow.
04:13One of the things that I think makes Star Wars so epic is not that there's just good and evil in a light side and a dark side,
04:20but the fact that Darth Vader says to Luke, I am your father, so that it becomes like a soap opera.
04:26Everyone's kind of interconnected, and I think that if the Upside Down is an entity in itself
04:31that's born of emotional content, that's born of despair or pain or loss,
04:37that could link it to a specific reason for all of this to have been occurring in Hawkins in 1983.
04:44I think that in some sense the show can be a monster show,
04:48or it can be a show that wraps up where the events of the show are actually directly related
04:54and couldn't have happened to any other characters but these characters as a result of whatever they went through.
04:59I like the idea of it being explicitly referenced as some kind of manifestation of a subconscious of a town.
05:07There's something dark in Hawkins, but we'll see.
05:10I have no idea.
05:11So again, I'm the most useless person to do these things, but thank you for having me.
05:17At Nellanage10,
05:21if Steve is John Gene Raffios from Parks and Rec's real father,
05:27then Billy changed his name and became Chris Traeger from Parks and Rec.
05:31I haven't watched Parks and Rec. I'm sorry. I know it's hilarious.
05:36It looks hilarious, but I haven't seen it.
05:38So I do know that these two guys look alike, Steve and Gene Raffio.
05:43I also, when I was 20 years old, looked a lot like Steve Harrington,
05:47and I'm not related to the character.
05:49At Aramez thinks Hopper's daughter is still alive.
05:53When it's showing the flashback of Hopper's daughter playing and she had her first cancer episode,
05:57does it look like she's freaking out?
06:00Like maybe she's seeing a creature from the Upside Down?
06:02So is it possible the government got her sick and faked her death and she's being held at the facility?
06:07They did a good job faking Will's death.
06:08I do not think that this is true.
06:14If we were to introduce the idea of some sort of time loop concept,
06:18the idea that Hopper's daughter could exist in some way would be very interesting.
06:23The Upside Down brings with it a lot of elements,
06:26which we'll start to see that we haven't even seen about what the Upside Down can do.
06:30But I don't think that in the physical world she's still alive and that the government has faked her death.
06:35I think that that pretty much was what it was that we've seen where she does die of cancer.
06:41She does live on with Hopper and we'll sort of see more about her relationship with Hopper,
06:46which I think is a little more complicated maybe.
06:49But I don't think she's still alive.
06:52At Scalabrinell's God, Dustin was playing the long game to get Nancy this entire time.
07:00Dustin obviously has a big crush on Nancy, but it predictably doesn't go anywhere.
07:04Nancy's different.
07:05Yeah, she seems pretty special, I guess.
07:08In the second season, when Max is introduced, we are led to believe that he likes her.
07:11This is just a trick to distract us.
07:14Dustin knew what he was doing when he and Steve formed their seemingly unlikely duo.
07:19Despite all the chaos and shit around him, he was able to get key information out of Steve.
07:26That key information being like how to be suave for the teenage gals, I guess.
07:31That sort of implies that Dustin is extremely sophisticated as an individual of 13 years old,
07:38not just this dude who's looking for chocolate pudding and running around.
07:43Mike!
07:44I found a chocolate pudding!
07:45But then he's a calculated lady killer and just needs that little extra zhuzh from Steve about the Farrah Fawcett hairspray,
07:54and that's going to take him to the finish line with Nancy.
07:56The beginning of this was, I'm a bit drunk right now.
07:59Sorry if this has already been established and if I don't make sense.
08:01My memory of the first season is pretty spotty because I didn't rewatch it.
08:04We'll rewatch it because Dustin is dumber than you think.
08:07Yeah, don't do that, okay?
08:11Okay.
08:12At Khalid thinks Murray is a Russian spy.
08:15He's the one character who frequently mentions Russia in the show.
08:18He drinks Russian vodka.
08:20In an ep called The Spy, he easily reads and manipulates Nancy and Jonathan into hooking up.
08:24How's the pullout?
08:26When Nancy and Jonathan tell them the truth about Barb,
08:28he advises them to tell the public a watered-down version of events to make it more believable,
08:32almost as if he's experienced at spreading disinformation campaign.
08:36Murray's goal is ultimately to learn U.S. intel and cause instability in the community.
08:42So this is a very interesting theory.
08:43I don't think that it's true.
08:46I think that you're going to see more of Murray in seasons to come.
08:49I think Murray is a very interesting character.
08:51I mean, it would have to be a big double bluff because he comes to me in the beginning of the episode
08:55and says there's a Russian spy presence in Hawkins and I don't believe him.
08:59So he would theoretically have to be revealing himself to me at the beginning of the season
09:05only for it to be a subterfuge.
09:09Again, that would be giving me a tremendous amount of credit that somehow I was like sort
09:13of onto it and then he wanted to align himself with me to pretend that he wasn't it.
09:18I think that the Russian thing is sort of a funny conspiracy theory that Murray has and
09:23he's a real just conspiracy theory nut.
09:25I think he is what he appears to be.
09:27But we'll see more of Murray in the future and we'll get to investigate these things.
09:33At no thing to see thinks demogorgons are more afraid of us than we are of it.
09:38Whenever the gorgon realizes that there's someone behind it, it simply turns around,
09:43opens its jaws and roars, something that will only get them running away as fast as they
09:48can.
09:49So I thought maybe that's the idea.
09:50The most damning evidence is that when Nancy's about to escape, the portal is to her right,
09:55but she can't go for it because the gorgon is also to her right until it moves to her
09:59left, positioning itself so that Nancy is in between the portal and it and it doesn't
10:02close the portal until Nancy is outside.
10:05This makes me think that it is afraid.
10:07And if disturbed in the upside down, it will do its best to chase the offender out.
10:11However, it seems to disregard any sort of caution when attacking the bleeding victim,
10:16even attacking three very pissed teens armed with a spiked club.
10:20Yes, and one minorly bleeding barb on a diving board.
10:25I mean, I love this theory because it's the real animal conservation environmentalist theory.
10:30The idea that we all are afraid of sharks, but they're just as afraid of us.
10:34I was in Antarctica pretty recently and the interesting thing about the animals down there
10:39is that they have no interaction with humans or very little interaction with humans and
10:42they were very unafraid.
10:43So, I think the reaction to being afraid of humans is a learned reaction from animals.
10:48I'm sorry, you ate my cat.
10:52So, I don't think that it would exist for this demogorgon being.
10:56And even as we see in season two, the demodogs, they again are pretty self-interested in just
11:03terms of eating and in terms of existing as animals.
11:06And the only thing that does transcend that is when the host is attacked.
11:12Like when we are closing the actual gate and the Thessalhydra monster is threatened in some
11:18way, they all will forego food like Steven and Dustin and will run to help the hive mind
11:25sort of place to stop whatever is attacking it.
11:28So that seems to be the only consciousness of higher thought that the fingers of the Thessalhydra
11:33has.
11:34At Peters 45 thinks the demogorgon is a manifestation of Eleven's trauma.
11:38I think the monster is actually an extension of Eleven herself and a physical manifestation
11:42of her troubled psyche.
11:44After saving Mike from jumping off the cliff, Eleven tearfully tells Mike, I'm sorry, the
11:48gate I opened it, I'm the monster.
11:50What if she knew that the monster was a product of her mind and was admitting that she had accidentally
11:54let it out and into the physical world?
11:57I love this theory.
11:58I actually believe in this theory and I pretty much know that it's not true.
12:04I thought that from the first season, from watching the first season, that Eleven, when
12:09she says I am the monster, that that was some sort of weird foresight thing where she actually
12:13was the monster.
12:15And I talked to the Duffers about that and they were like, no, she just feels upset about
12:20opening the gate and opening up these monsters.
12:22She's not actually that monster.
12:23And especially as we see in the second season, there's so many more monsters that it isn't
12:28just a manifestation of Eleven's consciousness.
12:30This is a world that is full of monsters.
12:33I thought it was literal as well.
12:35But the fact that Eleven feels like she herself is a monster is very powerful and made me
12:40cry.
12:41So I love this theory.
12:42I think it's beautiful.
12:43But it's not true.
12:44No, Elle, you're not the monster.
12:45So that's it.
12:47Fan theories on Reddit.
12:48They're all very interesting.
12:49You guys are very creative.
12:50Thank you very much for having me and thanks for being fans of the show.
12:54The kids buy a van, unmask the evil head of the Hawkins lab and adopt a dog.
12:59And it's then revealed that Stranger Things is simply a Scooby Doo prequel series.
13:04This is my theory.
13:05Wow.
13:06It's time.
13:07Hi there.
13:08I'm Joe Keery.
13:09I'm Mai Hawke.
13:10I'm Natalia Dyer.
13:11And I'm Joe Quinn.
13:12And we're the cast of Stranger Things.
13:13And we are going to be answering some fan theories for Vanity Fair.
13:28Paul DePaola's theory is the whole show is just an elaborate D&D game.
13:33The kids are actually all grown up and fantasizing about their imagined childhood nightmares.
13:39Love this theory.
13:40Wow.
13:41Love this theory.
13:42Great idea.
13:43Who play old versions of them?
13:45That's a great call.
13:47Gotta get Bill Hader for Finn because he did it in it.
13:50Natalie Portman.
13:51They always say that Natalie looks like Millie.
13:53You could play the older one.
13:54That's great.
13:55That's really fun though.
13:56That's a great theory.
13:57Do you think of the movie that that is like pretty much the plot of the movie?
14:00Yes.
14:01It's kind of like Jumanji honestly.
14:02It is.
14:03Right?
14:04Like you're going in and then you're...
14:05Yeah.
14:06I wonder if we would be characters playing that D&D or if we would be figments of their imagination.
14:10That's what I was imagining.
14:11I don't think we're the...
14:12I think it would be figments.
14:13I think like the core kids or like those would be the players and we would just be sort
14:16of the bards or what have you.
14:19Yeah.
14:20I think we'd probably be kind of people that they encounter in their normal lives.
14:23Like you'd be like the postman.
14:24You know how you dream of people?
14:25Oh yeah.
14:26Of course.
14:27Okay.
14:28Good luck.
14:29What?
14:30I...
14:31Noggle.
14:32Excuse you.
14:33I'd...
14:34Noggle.
14:35What?
14:36I'd...
14:37Noggle.
14:38This is their theory.
14:39Eleven will end up being the villain, whether of her own accord or under the control of the
14:48Mind Flayer.
14:49I'd say this is the most kind of feasible theory.
14:52This feels very classic.
14:53Yeah.
14:54Yeah.
14:55The hardcore killing that happens in the flashback is pretty maybe indicative of such a thing.
15:00Anime Stranger Things' theory is, I'm probably going to get negative comments, but I'm going
15:06to list off facts as to why I think Robin is a Russian spy.
15:11Sick.
15:12Love it.
15:13I learned Russian alarmingly quickly, I guess is one of the possible flags.
15:16Oh yeah.
15:17I'm fluent in four languages, you know.
15:19Russian?
15:20A peer from nowhere.
15:22I was never a background actor in the earlier seasons in the school.
15:25Just a plant.
15:26Just a total plant.
15:27Yeah.
15:28I, um...
15:29I like the idea.
15:30I also like the idea.
15:31Snoo Dash 22 937.
15:35Wow.
15:36I've been so focused on the chest hair.
15:40I never realized that Steve was wearing Eddie's jacket in this sequence.
15:43Maybe this could mean Eddie could have sadly died and Steve wears his jacket as a memorial
15:48sort of thing.
15:49Just a theory.
15:50I don't know.
15:51And it's a vest.
15:52That's a huge observation.
15:53And it's a very metal Dio vest.
15:55Yes.
15:56You do have a distracting chest though.
15:57Yep.
15:58I had to wax it for season whatever.
16:01Did you make it do it twice?
16:02I did it.
16:03I did it.
16:04I was a 40-year-old virgin.
16:05Masked Sonya's theory is, if you noticed in every season, there's a death of a character
16:10that starts with the letter B.
16:13Interesting.
16:14Benny, Barbara, Bob, and Billy.
16:17The only character remaining is Becky.
16:20Also, we had some scenes with her mom and Callie, the girl with the 008 tattoo.
16:25But the story is not completed, I think.
16:28There's a lot of stuff with the mom and the aunt that like, there's more there.
16:31There must be more there.
16:32And it's also interesting because your full character's name is Bobbin.
16:35Oh yeah, that's true.
16:36So that might play into it.
16:38Bobbin.
16:39Good point.
16:40Bobbin Buckley.
16:41My last name is Buckley.
16:42Exactly.
16:43I wonder if the brothers know that.
16:45Did the beating on purpose?
16:46They know, but I don't think they did it on purpose.
16:49That's a pretty big coincidence.
16:50Yeah.
16:51I'm also curious about the Callie girl.
16:53A lot of questions.
16:54Lots of questions.
16:55Shay Wolfie's theory is, I feel like it's possible that Nancy might die saving Robin's
17:00life.
17:01They're going to be together and paired up for the entire season.
17:04Robin was once Barb's best friend too.
17:06So I'm sure they're going to bond over that.
17:08There are a lot of things that are right in there.
17:10Pretty in depth.
17:11And it's very well researched.
17:12It's a great theory, I think.
17:13But it's an excellent theory.
17:15Clearly you read the book.
17:16We never talk about the Barb thing because that book was written by a different person,
17:19not the Duffer Brothers.
17:20And that actually is not their idea or their theory.
17:23It's sort of a different take on the same character from another writer.
17:27So it's not necessarily true in Duffer Brother world.
17:29Okay.
17:30From Twitter.
17:31Chris stories.
17:32Max gets powers and becomes an avatar sort of person for the mind flayer.
17:38Pretty unsupported.
17:39I don't know.
17:40It could happen.
17:41Couldn't happen.
17:42I don't know.
17:43No one's gotten powers.
17:44That kind of happened to William.
17:45Yeah.
17:46Yeah.
17:47Kind of like that idea.
17:48Runs in the family.
17:49Runs in the fate.
17:50Yeah.
17:51That's cool.
17:52Yeah.
17:53That's nice.
17:54Yeah.
17:55Billy gets powers.
17:56I guess they do.
17:57They just don't use their powers for good.
17:58I agree.
17:59I agree.
18:00Yeah.
18:01Lovely guy.
18:02Lovely guy.
18:03Can you imagine just being a scientist and doing your job and then all of a sudden
18:05you just get wrapped up in some stuff like that and then.
18:06Yeah.
18:07It's a shame.
18:08Bye-bye.
18:09Zip-dee-doo-dah.
18:10It's Luna Cassidy's theory is, so my first theory is, I definitely have a feeling a major
18:25character or two or two is going to die this season.
18:28My list is Steve, Dustin, Nancy, or Matt.
18:32In order of preference or?
18:33I don't know.
18:34I don't know.
18:35Okay.
18:36Dude.
18:37That's their list.
18:38Should we just tell us?
18:39I don't know.
18:40Should we just tell us?
18:41No.
18:42Yeah.
18:43I mean, that's always, it's always a possibility, right?
18:45We're dealing with some pretty crazy things.
18:48Stakes are high.
18:49Stakes are, yeah.
18:50Stakes are high.
18:51Pretty creepy.
18:52Pretty creepy.
18:55Stranger Emmys.
18:56There he is.
18:57Could there be some elements of time travel next season?
19:00There were several hints of this in the last season, including the obvious Back to the Future
19:06reference.
19:07Hmm.
19:08He went back in time.
19:11Then why is it called Back to the Future?
19:13Time travel, you say?
19:15Great theory.
19:16Love time travel.
19:17Cannot confirm or deny.
19:18Fluffy Duckling's theory is, I want poor Steve to have any kind of screen time with his
19:24parents.
19:25He says his dad's an asshole and his mom is super well respected around town.
19:29Like, who are they?
19:30You know, I'll tell you what.
19:32I have always wondered, people have always asked me, and my dad has been petitioning the
19:37Duffer Brothers for years to be my dad on the show.
19:40I think it would be a great opportunity to just start Pop's career, and it would be great.
19:45Heather Antos' theory is, the Upside Down is just another portal to Middle Earth.
19:51Samwise has gone to return to Frodo, his one true love.
19:56I'd love that to be true.
19:58Huh?
19:59Where?
20:00Who's Samwise?
20:01Oh, of course.
20:02Bob.
20:03Bob.
20:04Oh.
20:05That's pretty fun.
20:06Oh.
20:07Man, that was so crazy, him being on the show.
20:08That was.
20:09Such a nice guy.
20:10Um, from, look at this dude's theory.
20:13Max is being possessed, and that Eleven is going to get her powers back.
20:17Of course, Steve might die, only because he's laying down in the season four trailer,
20:22as if he was dead.
20:23This is strong.
20:24This is pretty strong.
20:25This is strong.
20:26We were all pretty tired, though, when we were filming, so.
20:28Yeah.
20:29It could just be that.
20:30There were a lot of naps.
20:31Oh, wow.
20:32I feel like it's about time that there are some deaths.
20:34It's kind of remarkable that we haven't died.
20:36Yeah, it's true.
20:37Yeah.
20:38So, they can smell it.
20:40Ozzyoz06888's theory is Nancy and Jonathan break up.
20:46Jonathan looks kind of stoner-ish in the trailer, and Nancy also did not go to Cali to visit
20:52with Mike, so I'm guessing they probably break up.
20:55That's pretty good.
20:56I mean.
20:57That's pretty good.
20:58Solid guessing.
21:00To be fair, we really don't even know what's going on.
21:03Yeah.
21:04But there is some lovely guessing in there.
21:05Miko Escorp's theory is the Mind Flayer living inside Steve's glorious hair.
21:11You never know.
21:12Is that how it gets so, so luminous?
21:14So lovely.
21:15Yeah, exactly.
21:16They should make a mousse called Mind Flayer.
21:17Mind Flayer mousse.
21:18Yeah.
21:19It's branding.
21:20You're welcome, Netflix.
21:21I'd like it cut.
21:22What people don't know is that it's just all a Lego haircut, and at the end of the day,
21:25I just go .
