Bryan Singer was the elephant in the room at the 75th Golden Globes on Sunday as 'Bohemian Rhapsody' picked up two awards.
Transcript
00:00Being a small part of telling Queen's story, Freddie's story, is something I will cherish for all time.
00:06Bohemian Rhapsody picked up two awards at Sunday's Golden Globes,
00:09Best Actor in a Drama for Rami Malek and Best Film in the Drama category.
00:13Love, tragedy, joy is something that people will feel belongs to them.
00:21The elephant in the room, however, came in the form of director Bryan Singer,
00:24who was fired from the Queen biopic and replaced by Dexter Fletcher.
00:28Singer was not thanked by Malek or producer Graham King, who accepted the Best Drama film nod,
00:33and the cast and crew dodged questions about the ousted helm were in the backstage press room.
00:37When asked by a reporter how much of a hurdle Singer's departure had been,
00:40King responded that it was not something he felt he should address at that time.
00:44When pressed further about the team's refusal to acknowledge the director in their acceptance speeches,
00:49Malek took to the mic to say this.
00:51There's only one thing we needed to do, and that was to celebrate Freddie Mercury in this film.
00:57In turn, Singer posted a response of sorts to the snub on his Instagram on Sunday evening
01:02by posting a picture of Malek and his co-star filming the I Want to Break Free scene
01:06along with a simple caption,
01:08What an honor. Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press.
01:11Singer was taken off of the film in December 2017 after what the studio said were unexplained absences from the set.
01:17After his departure, Singer denied any wrongdoing and claimed the studio refused to allow him
01:21to tend to a gravely ill parent as well as to his own health.
01:24I wanted nothing more than to be able to finish this project and help honor the legacy of Freddie Mercury
01:29and Queen, he said in a statement at the time.
01:31But Fox would not permit me to do so because I needed to temporarily put my health and the health of my loved ones first.
01:38At the time, King said in an interview,
01:40This wasn't the first time Singer's alleged erratic behavior had caused problems on a film set.
01:59An insider who worked with Singer on 2016's X- Apocalypse claims that while Singer had some good moments,
02:05he was emotionally very frail, often unprepared and late to set.
02:09Knowledge of these and other incidents made Fox chairman Stacey Snyder wary of hiring Singer
02:14and resulted in the director being told in no uncertain terms that if his deal were to be approved,
02:19he needed to show up to work every day, otherwise there would be consequences.
02:23Unfortunately, the warning fell on deaf ears with one film insider reporting that,
02:27from the beginning, he was up to his old tricks.
02:29After escalating tensions on set, Tom Hollander, who plays Queen manager Jim Beach,
02:33was said to be so upset with Singer that he quit the project briefly.
02:36Production was shut down December 1st and Singer was fired soon after.
