00:00Why do footballers wear socks under their socks?
00:03Footballers' favourite pastime is to play with their socks.
00:06First, it was those weird little circular holes.
00:08They help circulation, apparently.
00:09And now it's completely chopping off the lower half.
00:12Most elite pros opt to wear grip socks instead.
00:15These are socks that have small silicone grooves on the bottom,
00:18similar to those you might wear at a trampoline park.
00:20Is that a weird comparison? I don't think it is.
00:22They're clearly visible when watching in the stadium or on TV,
00:25but why do footballers need extra grip?
00:27Don't they have studs for that?
00:28Well, grip socks offer two advantages that normal socks don't.
00:32By preventing a player's foot sliding around their boot,
00:35they reduce the risk of blisters after a game
00:37and offer additional stability and traction.
00:39With their foot more steady in the boot,
00:41the player has more control over their movements.
00:43You'd think the sock manufacturers would just add this grip
00:46onto the standard issue socks that players wear.
00:48Apparently not.
00:49Maybe the players just like the arts and crafts.
00:51They do have a lot of free time, after all.
