00:00Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shocked the world — and perhaps members of their own
00:04families — when they announced that they want to step back from royal duties in favor
00:07of a more independent life in North America and the UK.
00:10According to their Instagram post, yes, they broke the news via social media.
00:14The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will work to become financially independent, but these
00:18royal renegades aren't casting off all the perks associated with their noble titles.
00:22According to PureWow, Meghan and Harry, quote, applied for a copyright stamp, which includes
00:25the Sussex royal name and their joint charity.
00:28The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
00:30The paperwork was reportedly approved in December 2019, just weeks before the couple's huge
00:35announcement.
00:36As CNN reports, quote,
00:37Harry and Meghan have trademarked Sussex Royal as a brand on more than 100 properties in the
00:41UK, including clothing, stationery, photographs, and educational and charitable endeavors, with
00:46predicted revenue of over $500 million.
00:49Smooth move, right?
00:50Smooth as silk.
00:52But let's crunch some numbers.
00:54Gaining financial independence from the crown could be a complicated pursuit.
00:57According to Newsweek, Meghan and Harry disclosed that, quote, just 5 percent of their cost
01:01of their household is covered by UK taxpayers.
01:04The 5 percent paid for the sovereign grant, they say, is used only for official royal duties,
01:08such as travel to and from engagements and to pay household staff such as their communications
01:12staff.
01:13The other 95 percent of the couple's income is given to them privately by Harry's father,
01:17Prince Charles, through revenues generated by his private estate, the Duchy of Cornwall.
01:21Rumor has it that Charles is not happy about this whole Megxit debacle.
01:25So it's anybody's guess how he'll handle his noble purse strings in the days to come.
01:29The Eveningstander claims Charles got a copy of Meghan and Harry's announcement just 10
01:32minutes before it was shared with the world.
01:34Some insiders say the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, quote, will be punished for defying
01:38the royal family.
01:39A source for The Sun even went so far as to call it a, quote, declaration of war on the
01:43family.
01:44The Duke and Duchess of Sussex clearly knew that trademarking their titles would be a
01:48wise move, and they had a new on-brand website, sussexroyal.com, ready to go when they made
01:53their big announcement.
01:55According to the Daily Mail, quote,
01:56The Sussexes want to stamp their name on dozens of products including t-shirts, hoodies,
02:00journals, and gloves for their newly created foundation, Sussex Royal.
02:03And that product line could, quote, generate revenues of 400 million pounds.
02:07Not to mention, they're, um, pretty famous, so they could certainly make ends meet by doing
02:11all those things that celebrities do, as Page Six reports, quote, Harry is also close to
02:15former President Barack Obama, and insiders say the prince could follow a similar post-presidency
02:20career path, involving philanthropy, speeches, book deals, and documentaries.
02:24Seriously, these two could spend the rest of their days as social media influencers hawking
02:28green teas if they wanted to, but something tells us that's not their style.
02:31Meghan Markle may be a commoner in the royal sense, but she had plenty of coin in her pocketbook
02:36before she met Prince Harry in 2016.
02:38According to celebrity net worth, the former actress has an estimated net worth of $5 million.
02:43Prince Harry isn't completely beholden to the crown, either.
02:45He reportedly inherited millions following the tragic death of his mother, Princess Diana,
02:49and he also earned a modest income as a helicopter pilot for the Army Air Corps, according to Forbes.
02:54The point is, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex probably have a wee bit of cushion in their
02:58budget.
02:59Not to mention, these two want to work.
03:01Cosmopolitan reports that, on their website, Meghan and Harry reportedly said they, quote,
03:05value the ability to earn a professional income, which, in the current structure, they are
03:08prohibited from doing.
03:10Markle has been preaching the same thing for years.
03:12The suit star told InStyle in 2015,
03:14"...I think the biggest part of being a girl boss is just knowing your value."
03:18Plus, on her now-defunct lifestyle blog The Tig, she once wrote,
03:21"...I've never wanted to be a lady who lunches.
03:23I've always wanted to be a woman who works."
03:25It looks like she'll now get her chance.
