00:01:43IceCross to me
00:01:46is controlled chaos on ice,
00:01:50and there's nothing like it.
00:01:51As soon as you get to the gate
00:01:54and that five-second warning is called,
00:01:56like everything goes silent,
00:01:57it's probably the most peaceful time
00:01:58you'll ever experience in life.
00:02:03There's no buddy-buddy thing out there.
00:02:06You know, it's war out there.
00:02:16Coming through all that
00:02:25and then working through with what I've dealt with,
00:02:28I'd probably have to say the ice cross
00:02:29has probably saved my life.
00:02:32Oh, my goodness!
00:02:46If you would, introduce yourself
00:03:08and, you know, what you do.
00:03:11Okay.
00:03:12Yes, hey, my name is Stefan Aufschneider.
00:03:14I'm Austrian.
00:03:16Actually, I'm the president of the ATSX Federation.
00:03:20I have invented that sport together
00:03:21with a colleague in 2000.
00:03:24And it's always spectacular.
00:03:27Wherever we go,
00:03:28people are standing behind it.
00:03:29Wow!
00:03:44When someone asks me what is ice cross,
00:03:50I could get into full detail,
00:03:53the explanation,
00:03:54but there's one word.
00:03:56It's action.
00:03:57Ice cross is a sport
00:03:57that will make you question what is possible.
00:04:00It's a comeback story
00:04:01where you reach a peak,
00:04:03you reach a certain ceiling,
00:04:04and then you get knocked on your ass
00:04:06and you've got to find a way to get back up.
00:04:09Aspect of ice cross is crashing,
00:04:11and, you know,
00:04:12you're going to go down no matter what.
00:04:14And you're always faster on your feet
00:04:16than you are on your butt.
00:04:17I don't know if that was better or not.
00:04:19I don't know what I'm saying.
00:04:19I don't know.
00:04:20When I think about ice cross right now as a sport,
00:04:30I think hope is probably
00:04:31the best describing term that I could use.
00:04:33We are very thankful
00:04:35for the support of Red Bull for 20 years.
00:04:38I mean, we were hit
00:04:41in the most unlucky situation,
00:04:44two years of COVID.
00:04:45It was, of course,
00:04:47the worst that could happen to us.
00:04:50We didn't know if there was going to be
00:04:51a sport moving forward,
00:04:52but with the passionate athletes,
00:04:54people were surrounded by,
00:04:56the guys who put the time in,
00:04:57who don't get paid.
00:04:59We grind it out right now.
00:05:01And we're at that stage
00:05:02where we're seeing momentum build again.
00:05:06I'm really happy by the end of this season
00:05:08to see that we still survived.
00:05:10The sport is still there.
00:05:12We had seven events this year,
00:05:13which is amazing for zero, zero budget.
00:05:17So everybody had to do it on its own.
00:05:20Athletes that compete in this sport
00:05:22volunteer to build the track
00:05:24on their own time
00:05:26while they currently work full-time jobs.
00:05:29You know, they'll come to the track
00:05:30a month early
00:05:31to start building it
00:05:32so that there's an event.
00:05:35Out here making ice tracks
00:05:36in the middle of the night.
00:05:38Wouldn't have it any other way.
00:05:40Drive your fee over here.
00:05:42The athletes are the heartbeat of this sport.
00:05:45For the 2023 season of Ice Cross,
00:05:48we decided to follow four athletes
00:05:49as they travel and make sacrifices
00:05:52to compete in the most insane sport
00:05:54you've never heard of.
00:05:57We have Rob Whirling from Canada,
00:05:59the viral ice dunking sensation.
00:06:02Rob found new popularity
00:06:03on social media last year
00:06:05as he flew about 25 feet through the air
00:06:07to dunk a basketball on ice skates
00:06:10like he's Michael Jordan.
00:06:12We'll see if he can take
00:06:14that extreme athleticism
00:06:15and use it
00:06:16to capture his first world championship.
00:06:19We have Luke Webb from Australia,
00:06:21a.k.a. Ozzy Crasher.
00:06:23His name speaks for itself
00:06:25and his heart is just as big as his crasher's.
00:06:30Luke is the only competitive ice cross athlete
00:06:33that there's ever been from Australia.
00:06:36He's a phenomenon.
00:06:38You might as well call him
00:06:39a Jamaican bobsledder.
00:06:41We have Jack Schramm from New Jersey,
00:06:44just your all-American guy,
00:06:46a.k.a. the rooted athlete.
00:06:48Jack is one of the most fit guys
00:06:50on the ice cross tour
00:06:51and he's also a veteran within the sport.
00:06:54But his real mastery starts in his mind
00:06:57and his positive outlook on life
00:06:59is just, it's contagious to everyone around it.
00:07:02Let's go!
00:07:04And then we have Britton Morris,
00:07:06the mullet rocking racer from Texas,
00:07:07a.k.a. Mullet Mike.
00:07:10Britton is going on his fourth year
00:07:11competing in ice cross
00:07:12and already finds himself
00:07:13towards the top of the sport.
00:07:14He is one of the fastest athletes
00:07:17out of the start gates.
00:07:18But the thing that really sets him apart
00:07:20is his win-at-all-cost mindset.
00:07:25Each athlete has their battles to face
00:07:27on the ice and off the ice.
00:07:29But will they be able to manage?
00:07:31Will they be able to separate
00:07:32life and sport?
00:07:36We'll see.
00:07:38That's what we're here to find out.
00:07:39I'm Britton Morris,
00:07:56a.k.a. Mullet Mike.
00:07:58I race for the USA,
00:08:00more specifically,
00:08:01the great country of Texas.
00:08:02I've been competing in ice cross
00:08:07for four years now, I believe.
00:08:10Born and raised here in Austin, Texas.
00:08:12I lived here my entire life.
00:08:15I played hockey from a young age.
00:08:17I started when I was about four years old.
00:08:20I remember I was really into skating.
00:08:24I was fascinated by it.
00:08:25And I would see all the people
00:08:26on the ice rink in the middle of this mall.
00:08:28So I'm sitting there watching figure skating.
00:08:31And then my dad was like,
00:08:32you know what?
00:08:33We probably should take this kid
00:08:34to a hockey game
00:08:35before he becomes a figure skater.
00:08:37So,
00:08:38not the same thing wrong with figure skating
00:08:40or male figure skaters.
00:08:41I have high expectations.
00:08:43And I'm not taking them lightly.
00:08:46I want to be top ten in the world.
00:08:47And I want to be the number one American racer.
00:08:50A lot of people don't understand
00:09:09why we do this sport.
00:09:12It's a grind.
00:09:13Awesome, Garth.
00:09:23I appreciate you, brother.
00:09:24Alright, bud.
00:09:25Alright, thanks, man.
00:09:26Bye.
00:09:28Just like that.
00:09:29We got more money.
00:09:30You hear that?
00:09:32Now we can pay for gas and food.
00:09:36I think we got everything packed up.
00:09:41Love y'all.
00:09:42Love you.
00:09:43We got more money.
00:09:49Brittany and I met in 2014
00:09:51when I first moved to Texas.
00:09:52We have a lot of similarities.
00:09:54We're both athletes.
00:09:55We have similar mindsets,
00:09:57similar perspectives on life.
00:09:59And
00:09:59we view life kind of like a sport.
00:10:02That's how you should attack it.
00:10:05DJ,
00:10:06he's a Mississippi boy.
00:10:07He's not used to the cold and everything.
00:10:10So after his first event,
00:10:11he sends me the GoPro footage,
00:10:12and he's flying by trees,
00:10:1435 miles per hour,
00:10:15jumping, turning.
00:10:17I've never seen anything like it.
00:10:19He was completely blown away by it,
00:10:21loved it,
00:10:21became, you know,
00:10:23kind of all about the sport and everything.
00:10:26Britton competes in a race
00:10:27where if he wins,
00:10:28he qualifies to compete in Fenway Park
00:10:30for the world championships.
00:10:32And I'm like,
00:10:33what do you mean Fenway Park?
00:10:34That's where the Red Sox play.
00:10:36And he goes,
00:10:37yeah,
00:10:37they're going to build a track
00:10:38in the middle of Fenway Park.
00:10:39Pick it up.
00:10:40Let's go.
00:10:42Come on, baby.
00:10:43Let's go.
00:10:43I knew I wanted to be involved in the sport.
00:10:50I just didn't know how
00:10:51because
00:10:51I can't skate.
00:10:58I'm just a boy from Mississippi.
00:11:00To say I appreciate
00:11:01what these athletes do on ice
00:11:03is a huge, huge understatement.
00:11:06Britain started to race three years ago.
00:11:25I heard about this wild Texan
00:11:28that was coming in
00:11:29and he was doing really well at races.
00:11:31Britain's got a hockey background,
00:11:33so he's going to anywhere
00:11:34where there's an opportunity
00:11:36to stride and skate, he will.
00:11:38I've never seen anyone do
00:11:40what Brit can do on skates.
00:11:422022, Red Bull is gone at this point,
00:11:45and so it's a totally different dynamic.
00:11:46We lost our primary sponsor,
00:11:49and we still had some really amazing races.
00:11:52Italy was probably my second favorite track
00:11:55I've ever been on.
00:11:56It was the most beautiful backdrop scenery
00:12:00that you can ever imagine.
00:12:03and I was just eager
00:12:05and ready to attack
00:12:07and win these races.
00:12:09I couldn't keep the tiger in the cage.
00:12:12I thought I heard something,
00:12:15and I false started
00:12:17in the very first race,
00:12:20and I was DQ'd,
00:12:21and that was the end of
00:12:23my season, actually.
00:12:25It was a huge, huge disappointment.
00:12:35I was disappointed in myself
00:12:36for a good while with that one.
00:12:40During the season,
00:12:42I was going through a lot,
00:12:43you know, just personally
00:12:44and back home and things like that.
00:12:462021 was a tough year for me.
00:12:49My granny was going through
00:12:50some health issues.
00:12:53She basically was on the road
00:12:56to acute leukemia,
00:12:58which kills you very fast.
00:13:00Big, small, grandson.
00:13:02Hey, granny.
00:13:03Hi, man.
00:13:04What are you?
00:13:05Look at you!
00:13:07Oh, my gosh!
00:13:09What did you do with that?
00:13:10Last night, my dad did it.
00:13:11Aww.
00:13:12And it just, yeah,
00:13:14beat her down really bad,
00:13:16and she got, you know,
00:13:18really sick from it
00:13:19and was in the hospital
00:13:20for a long time,
00:13:21and it was tough for me
00:13:22to go away for the 2022 season
00:13:24because I knew she was
00:13:25dealing with all of that,
00:13:27and she was the one
00:13:30that was like, you know,
00:13:31you have to go race,
00:13:31you have to go live your life
00:13:33and everything.
00:13:35She just is the strongest person
00:13:38that I know
00:13:38and got through all of it,
00:13:40and now is sitting here
00:13:42almost a year later,
00:13:43cancer-free.
00:13:45So things are good right now,
00:13:47and I feel good.
00:13:48The body feels good.
00:13:50Last season,
00:13:51I went into it
00:13:52very, very heavy
00:13:53and strong and powerful,
00:13:55and I thought
00:13:56that was the correct way
00:13:57to prepare and train
00:13:59for my season,
00:14:00and it beat my joints
00:14:01to absolute shit.
00:14:03My knees and my ankles
00:14:04were shot.
00:14:05You can't really let that
00:14:06hold you back
00:14:06because this is a sport
00:14:07of injuries.
00:14:08Every year,
00:14:09either you have something
00:14:11that's bothering you
00:14:12or along the way
00:14:13you're going to get injured.
00:14:14Every athlete out here
00:14:15is fighting
00:14:16through some type of injury.
00:14:18Well, let me tell you,
00:14:18at that 35 miles an hour,
00:14:20anything can happen.
00:14:22You can go flying
00:14:22to the boards,
00:14:23you can yard sale,
00:14:24helmet can come popping off.
00:14:25...behind his...
00:14:27Oh, my goodness!
00:14:28Shane Renaud
00:14:29right through the dasher boards
00:14:30on the side.
00:14:31Going into this season,
00:14:43I've changed my training approach.
00:14:45I'm lighter,
00:14:46I'm faster,
00:14:47and I did a ton
00:14:48of prehab stuff
00:14:50for my knees
00:14:50and my ankles
00:14:51and everything like that.
00:14:52So I'm going into the season,
00:14:54you know,
00:14:55feeling the best
00:14:56I've ever felt,
00:14:56feeling the fastest
00:14:57I've ever felt.
00:14:58Clearly, this sport
00:14:58is dangerous.
00:14:59I mean,
00:15:00it will not spare
00:15:00even the best athletes.
00:15:02We had Matt Johnson
00:15:03this year
00:15:04practice day one
00:15:06in Mont Delac, Wisconsin.
00:15:07Toe picks,
00:15:08and a toe pick
00:15:09is when the front
00:15:10of your blade,
00:15:10the front of your skate,
00:15:12digs into the ice
00:15:13and you lose your footing.
00:15:15So he toe picks
00:15:16and slides right into a wall,
00:15:18tears his shoulder up.
00:15:19Unfortunately,
00:15:20we took a toe pick
00:15:21after the step down there
00:15:22and tested out the boards
00:15:24and they work good.
00:15:27Doctor says
00:15:27we got a rotator cuff
00:15:28tear and a subscapularis strain.
00:15:31So it looks like
00:15:32the Mont Delac
00:15:33is over for me.
00:15:42So this track
00:15:43here in Wisconsin
00:15:43is not perfect.
00:15:45None of these tracks
00:15:45will be perfect.
00:15:47I mean,
00:15:47you're dealing with
00:15:47outdoor elements
00:15:48that you can't really control.
00:15:50And then you factor in
00:15:51building a track
00:15:52of ice
00:15:53for people to skate down.
00:15:55It's not going to be
00:15:56a smooth, perfect surface.
00:15:58It's impossible.
00:15:58But, I mean,
00:16:00these guys are doing
00:16:00the best that they can
00:16:01possibly do
00:16:02with the situation
00:16:02that they were given.
00:16:03And without them,
00:16:05this event wouldn't happen.
00:16:09So we basically
00:16:10will start watering
00:16:11when the hill closes,
00:16:12which generally is
00:16:13between 8 and 10 p.m.
00:16:14at night.
00:16:15And we'll water
00:16:16until our bodies give out,
00:16:18which is generally
00:16:18like 3 or 4 in the morning.
00:16:20That also is the best weather
00:16:22for making ice.
00:16:23So you just go layer
00:16:26after layer
00:16:27after layer.
00:16:28You let it sit
00:16:29for a couple hours.
00:16:30You know,
00:16:31you may go get some food,
00:16:32come back,
00:16:33you lay another layer
00:16:34after layer
00:16:34after layer
00:16:35for, like I said,
00:16:37as long as you can.
00:16:38And you do that
00:16:39for the next 10 days.
00:16:41I want to know
00:16:47where your jump technique
00:16:48comes from.
00:16:49Every time.
00:16:51Dude, fucking,
00:16:51the Daniel sign, man.
00:16:53That's the karate kid.
00:16:54And then you're like,
00:16:54boom.
00:16:55This is the karate kid.
00:16:57I love it.
00:16:58Like, Tom Tom?
00:16:59It makes for some of,
00:17:00like, the greatest photos,
00:17:01though,
00:17:01because it's like
00:17:02the background,
00:17:03you're just soaring
00:17:04in the air.
00:17:05I love it.
00:17:09So, unfortunately,
00:17:10we have a dangerous
00:17:11situation at the
00:17:11finish line
00:17:12in Maude Delac.
00:17:13Because the way
00:17:14the track is set up
00:17:15and where it ends,
00:17:16it ends right in front
00:17:17of the ski lodge.
00:17:18So, for it not to
00:17:18block the ski lodge
00:17:20completely,
00:17:20they had to shorten it.
00:17:22Which means
00:17:23there's not a lot
00:17:25of room to stop.
00:17:26And when you're
00:17:26flying down that mountain
00:17:27with other athletes
00:17:28at 35 miles per hour,
00:17:30you gotta find a way
00:17:31to stop.
00:17:32Regardless of track
00:17:33conditions
00:17:34and the dangers
00:17:34of this sport,
00:17:35these athletes
00:17:36are willing to do
00:17:37what it takes
00:17:37to keep their dreams alive.
00:17:39It's sacrifices
00:17:40in the short term
00:17:41in hopes
00:17:42that you accomplish
00:17:43your goals
00:17:43in the long term.
00:17:45That's what life's
00:17:45all about.
00:17:46No matter what mountain
00:17:47is in your path,
00:17:48you just take one step
00:17:50at a time
00:17:50in the right direction
00:17:51and before you know it,
00:17:53you'll be where
00:17:53you want to be.
00:17:56Mount Delac, Wisconsin,
00:17:57that's the place
00:17:59that I've raced
00:17:59the most at.
00:18:00I feel the most
00:18:01comfortable there.
00:18:02I think I've done,
00:18:03I want to say,
00:18:04five races there now.
00:18:05I get there this year
00:18:06and the track
00:18:07is just built
00:18:08what I feel like
00:18:10for me.
00:18:10It's a full sprint
00:18:11out of the gate,
00:18:12big send over
00:18:13some doubles
00:18:14and then tight turns
00:18:15so you lose your speed
00:18:17and then you have to
00:18:17chop, chop, chop,
00:18:18get going again.
00:18:19A little bit of technicality
00:18:20with some stair steps
00:18:21and then a big waterfall
00:18:22down to the finish.
00:18:24Very dangerous finish there
00:18:25because basically
00:18:28they have the finish line
00:18:29on a downhill.
00:18:30and then they have
00:18:34boards like maybe
00:18:3610 yards in front of that
00:18:38so that was the only part
00:18:40of the track
00:18:40that I didn't love
00:18:41but I love,
00:18:42I love the track there.
00:18:43I love what they did.
00:18:44TJ and Rob,
00:18:45they put a lot of work
00:18:46into it and did a great job.
00:18:53On Friday,
00:18:54we have time trials.
00:18:55Time trials are designed
00:18:56to divide the field
00:18:57into groups of four.
00:18:58Each athlete will have
00:19:00two attempts down the track
00:19:01and you'll take your best time
00:19:03and that will be used
00:19:04to place you
00:19:05into that group of four.
00:19:06Gate selections
00:19:07will then be determined
00:19:08by who finished first
00:19:09in your heat.
00:19:11Gate selections
00:19:11are extremely important
00:19:13because the way
00:19:13the track's set up
00:19:14it's either going to veer
00:19:15one way or the other
00:19:16so you want to have
00:19:17one of the middle gates
00:19:18so that you have
00:19:19the best angle
00:19:20going into those turns.
00:19:22If you have an inside gate,
00:19:24you might get pinched
00:19:25and blocked out.
00:19:26If you have an outside gate,
00:19:27you might get left
00:19:28in the dust.
00:19:32The day after time trials,
00:19:34we have race day.
00:19:35Races usually start
00:19:36with the round of 64.
00:19:38It's tournament style.
00:19:40So the first
00:19:41and second place athlete
00:19:42in each group
00:19:43will move on
00:19:44to the next round
00:19:45until we're left
00:19:46with the final four.
00:19:47So there's a lot of strategy,
00:19:49especially in the early rounds.
00:19:50In the early rounds,
00:19:51you just want to make sure
00:19:52that you move on
00:19:53but you also kind of
00:19:54want to make sure
00:19:55you get a good gate selection
00:19:56in that next heat.
00:19:58So to secure
00:19:59the best gate selection,
00:20:00you get first in each round.
00:20:01You want to be aggressive
00:20:02but you don't want
00:20:04to be too aggressive
00:20:05and maybe make a move
00:20:06that causes you
00:20:07to be eliminated
00:20:07which happened early
00:20:09in the day for TJ.
00:20:11Five seconds warning!
00:20:12Michael Romano
00:20:15leading the way
00:20:16with TJ Obrecht
00:20:17flying through the air
00:20:18right on his back.
00:20:19TJ in second place
00:20:20needs to watch out
00:20:21though.
00:20:21He's got one of the
00:20:22greasier passers
00:20:23in the sport.
00:20:23Matt Kawahara
00:20:24coming down to the finish.
00:20:25Michael still in the lead.
00:20:26Oh, TJ goes down
00:20:27and Kawahara passes
00:20:28over the last second.
00:20:29TJ is eliminated.
00:20:31Pushed it too hard
00:20:32on that last turn.
00:20:33I wanted to be first
00:20:34so I could have
00:20:34best gate pick
00:20:35into the next round.
00:20:36Got a little wobbly.
00:20:38Hit the roller.
00:20:39That's all she wrote
00:20:40and I got passed
00:20:41at the end.
00:20:41So, happy to have
00:20:43this event.
00:20:43Happy to be here.
00:20:45But just a little bit
00:20:46disappointed right now.
00:20:47Britton Morris
00:20:48with a solid lead
00:20:49coming down
00:20:49to the finish line
00:20:50and he'll move on
00:20:51to the round of 16.
00:20:53He made wins
00:20:54in these first two rounds
00:20:55look easy.
00:20:57Kale Johnstone
00:20:58and Britton Morris
00:20:58sailing over
00:20:59that first jump.
00:21:06Oh, and a nice pass
00:21:08by Britton on the inside.
00:21:09That doesn't usually
00:21:10happen on the stairs.
00:21:11A step down.
00:21:11Britton leading
00:21:12going down the waterfalls
00:21:13as they make the final
00:21:14turn to the finish
00:21:14with Morris and Johnstone
00:21:16making it to the semifinals.
00:21:18I think Kale said
00:21:19he was like
00:21:19TJ needs to watch out.
00:21:21Kale Harrell is
00:21:22fucking decent.
00:21:24Good job, baby.
00:21:25A lot of competitive racers
00:21:26in that round of 16
00:21:28so your second race
00:21:29of the day
00:21:29you're already facing
00:21:30the top guys.
00:21:31So, get ready
00:21:32for semifinals
00:21:33and the finals, baby.
00:21:34In this semifinal heat
00:21:44we have Britton Morris
00:21:45Michael Romano
00:21:46Kale Johnstone
00:21:47and Matt Kawahara.
00:21:48Ready!
00:21:50Five second warning!
00:21:52They send it over the doubles
00:22:01with Britton in the lead
00:22:02but followed closely
00:22:03by the rest of the pack.
00:22:04It is tight.
00:22:04They come around that turn
00:22:05and look at the skating
00:22:06here by Britton Morris
00:22:07to really try and create
00:22:08some distance for himself
00:22:09as the leader.
00:22:10Coming down towards
00:22:11the waterfalls
00:22:12they really got to watch out
00:22:13for this choppy and rutted ice
00:22:14this late in the racing.
00:22:16Morris with a comfortable lead
00:22:17but, oh, look at this
00:22:18Kawahara and Romano
00:22:20jockeying for second.
00:22:21It's going to be tight
00:22:22for that last spot
00:22:23in the final.
00:22:23Oh, and there's a huge
00:22:25garage sale
00:22:25at the finish line.
00:22:29Britton Morris
00:22:29seems to be
00:22:30in a significant amount
00:22:31of pain
00:22:31and is holding his knee.
00:22:32Hopefully, that won't affect him
00:22:34and he'll be good
00:22:35to go in the final.
00:22:44Basically, what happened
00:22:44in the semifinal was
00:22:46I got a great start.
00:22:47I came down
00:22:47and it was a competitive heat.
00:22:49Romano was in there
00:22:50who's, you know,
00:22:51top five in the world
00:22:51right now.
00:22:52I held first
00:22:53the entire time.
00:22:54I actually finished
00:22:54a decent amount
00:22:56ahead of them.
00:22:56Went through the finish line,
00:22:58slammed on the brakes,
00:22:59did a little fist pump
00:23:00because I was going
00:23:00to the finals
00:23:01and by the time
00:23:02I pumped my fist
00:23:03and turned to my left
00:23:04they were barreling down
00:23:05right at me
00:23:06and they're going
00:23:07at that point
00:23:07probably 35 miles an hour
00:23:10and I'm just dead stop
00:23:12standing sideways
00:23:12like a dumbass.
00:23:14In Ice Cross
00:23:14it's all about
00:23:15who gets the front
00:23:16of their blade
00:23:17in front
00:23:18crossing that finish line
00:23:19first.
00:23:21Nothing else matters.
00:23:22That's what they
00:23:22were trying to do.
00:23:23They slide in
00:23:24baseball style
00:23:25and they slide in
00:23:26right on Britton
00:23:27and unfortunately
00:23:28right to the side
00:23:29of his knee.
00:23:30At first I wasn't sure
00:23:32if, you know,
00:23:33it was just the impact
00:23:34that hurt
00:23:34or if something
00:23:35happened to my knee
00:23:36because it was just
00:23:36right on the side
00:23:37direct contact.
00:23:38The guys behind me
00:23:39were just trying
00:23:40to cross the line first.
00:23:41You know,
00:23:41they're not trying
00:23:41to take me out
00:23:42or anything.
00:23:43It's one of those
00:23:43unfortunate events
00:23:44where I'm just
00:23:45standing there.
00:23:51I mean,
00:23:51he already has
00:23:52a torn labrum
00:23:52in his hip
00:23:53that happened
00:23:54while he was
00:23:54training before
00:23:55the season.
00:23:56Now he's got
00:23:56something going
00:23:57on with his knee
00:23:57and all that's
00:23:58tied together.
00:23:59But the greatest
00:24:00athletes have an
00:24:01ability to block
00:24:02out the noise.
00:24:04Injury or not,
00:24:05torn labrum or not,
00:24:07you still have to
00:24:07compete if that's
00:24:08what you love,
00:24:09if that's what
00:24:10you want to do.
00:24:11That's got to be
00:24:12your mindset.
00:24:13But now,
00:24:15now you're in the
00:24:15finals.
00:24:16Now you're facing
00:24:17the best of the best.
00:24:21Here we go.
00:24:22You guys ready
00:24:23at the bottom?
00:24:23Let's go, baby.
00:24:24Breton, he has
00:24:25such an explosive
00:24:26start.
00:24:27He always gets
00:24:28in front of you
00:24:29right at the beginning
00:24:31of the race,
00:24:32so we have to find
00:24:33our way around him.
00:24:35And it's kind of
00:24:36difficult because he's
00:24:37playing his game
00:24:38very well,
00:24:39cutting the line,
00:24:40blocking the passes.
00:24:41A lot of racers
00:24:41focus on their line.
00:24:43I like to focus on
00:24:44everybody else's line
00:24:44when I'm racing.
00:24:45I like to get in there
00:24:46and just create havoc.
00:24:47Finals, going against
00:24:48Max Dunn, who,
00:24:50he's a veteran in the
00:24:51sport.
00:24:52He's someone who has,
00:24:53you know, gone up
00:24:54and really competed
00:24:55against the top guys.
00:24:57He's a big guy,
00:24:58so that means he's
00:24:58hard to pass.
00:25:00So I knew going
00:25:01into the finals,
00:25:02I got to get out
00:25:02ahead of this guy
00:25:03and then just fuck
00:25:04his game up the
00:25:05whole way.
00:25:05Ryder, come on.
00:25:06Ready?
00:25:08Five seconds,
00:25:09warning.
00:25:10Man, it doesn't look
00:25:12like the crash has
00:25:13held him up at all.
00:25:14An incredible start
00:25:15for Morris with a lot
00:25:16of power getting out
00:25:17in front.
00:25:18I just watched his
00:25:19shadow the way
00:25:20Duloc is.
00:25:21The sun's right
00:25:21behind you when you're
00:25:22going, so you can
00:25:23actually see the other
00:25:24athlete's shadows on
00:25:25the ground.
00:25:25So I'm just, I'm
00:25:26watching his shadow
00:25:27and I'm getting in front
00:25:28of it and I'm moving.
00:25:29I hit the jump.
00:25:30We take that first turn
00:25:31and I'm ahead of him
00:25:32and I knew then.
00:25:33I was like, okay,
00:25:33I got through the hard
00:25:35part of this.
00:25:36Now I just fight him
00:25:36off.
00:25:36Dunn is right in
00:25:39Britton's back pocket
00:25:40coming out of that turn
00:25:40but again, his strides
00:25:41are just unmatched.
00:25:43He's powerful and
00:25:44pulls away.
00:25:45Now with a pretty
00:25:46substantial lead coming
00:25:47towards the waterfall,
00:25:48he has to watch out
00:25:49for the big-bodied veteran
00:25:50who will be able to
00:25:51generate a lot more
00:25:52speed with those long
00:25:53legs.
00:25:53Oh, and Kawahara almost
00:25:55goes over the boards
00:25:56there.
00:25:57Meanwhile, Dunn and
00:25:58Morris connect with each
00:25:59other and both go down
00:26:00at the finish line and
00:26:01it looks like Morris has
00:26:03won it, which would be
00:26:04his first ever ice
00:26:05cross event win.
00:26:06Here we go, brother!
00:26:09And I thought I won
00:26:10when I got up.
00:26:11I was amped up,
00:26:12thought I took first.
00:26:13And the way I fell
00:26:14was kind of backwards
00:26:17and so I ended up
00:26:18crossing the line
00:26:19on my ass,
00:26:20but the back of my
00:26:21skate crossed first
00:26:22and he, being the
00:26:24veteran and good
00:26:24racer that he is,
00:26:25stuck his toe out
00:26:26and the toe of his
00:26:27blade crossed before
00:26:28the toe of my blade.
00:26:30Found out I took
00:26:30second and so it was
00:26:32disappointing, but at the
00:26:33same time, if you told
00:26:34me at the beginning
00:26:35of the season you're
00:26:35going to be taking
00:26:36second place in your
00:26:36first race, I'd be
00:26:37pretty pumped up.
00:26:39So I took it as a win.
00:27:03You know, we want to
00:27:15bring, we want to bring
00:27:17St. Paul back.
00:27:18We want those big races
00:27:19back, right?
00:27:20But there's no way to do
00:27:21that without community
00:27:22involvement or people
00:27:23even knowing the sport
00:27:24still exists.
00:27:25And Kids Cross is a
00:27:26great way to do that.
00:27:29You're literally waiting
00:27:30for one time a year to
00:27:31come out and try the sport.
00:27:32So Kids Cross on Sunday
00:27:34gives those kids an
00:27:36opportunity to try a
00:27:37track.
00:27:41It's a fun event to host
00:27:42as a venue.
00:27:44It's been essentially
00:27:46done through volunteer
00:27:47hours for the last few
00:27:49years.
00:27:49So it's impressive the
00:27:51amount of energy that
00:27:53the athletes put in to
00:27:54keep this thing going in
00:27:56the U.S.
00:27:56The traveling is always,
00:28:17is always pretty difficult
00:28:18for me throughout the
00:28:19season.
00:28:19And I go like full
00:28:22commitment.
00:28:22I'm traveling for that
00:28:23entire month and a half.
00:28:24Some athletes go back
00:28:27home for three days and
00:28:28then they're back
00:28:29somewhere else for three
00:28:31days and then, you know,
00:28:32they kind of bounce back
00:28:33and forth.
00:28:33But I'm all in.
00:28:34I just go.
00:28:35I feel like it's best for
00:28:36me to do it that way just
00:28:37because of like the
00:28:38mindset and really enjoying
00:28:40the places that we get to
00:28:41go to.
00:28:41Because whenever you're just
00:28:42going there for two or
00:28:43three days, just racing it,
00:28:44you don't really get to
00:28:45enjoy the beautiful spots
00:28:47around the world that we're
00:28:48able to travel to and race
00:28:50in person.
00:29:20My good friend, Jack Tramp, he's someone that is a veteran of the sport.
00:29:29He's been at it for a long time, and he's a very competitive person.
00:29:35Brin, we just hit it off.
00:29:37We got a lot of interest, and he's the type of guy you call up, and he's just down for anything.
00:29:43What first got me into ice cross is I saw it on TV, but I was still playing ice hockey,
00:29:48and it was the same season as ice hockey, so when I graduated from college and I wasn't competing anymore,
00:29:54I needed something to, you know, kind of fulfill my need to compete.
00:29:59Outside of racing, he's just a happy, curious person.
00:30:03On the track, he's extremely tunnel-visioned, focused on his line, his path,
00:30:08not really concerned with everyone around him.
00:30:10Yeah, it's a lot.
00:30:11You definitely got it.
00:30:13You left me hanging at the airport.
00:30:16See, I told you, bro.
00:30:18This is the steep photo I have at a short jacket.
00:30:20It's, like, as steep as this.
00:30:24I've been traveling with Eric Malenkovich, like, the last couple seasons a lot,
00:30:29because it just seems like we're always just on the same route,
00:30:32and he's always just down to go to all the races,
00:30:35and I'm always going to all the races, so we end up traveling with each other.
00:30:39Eric is, like, Eric is, like, the Forrest Gump of ice cross.
00:30:43This dude is hilarious.
00:30:44He's super unique, really athletic dude.
00:30:47He's got a lot of experience skateboarding, and his style, bringing that over to ice cross,
00:30:54he's really great at jumping.
00:30:56Having Eric around is always good laughs.
00:30:58I started traveling with Jack ice cross when I saw him in Finland, and just kept hanging out since then.
00:31:08Jack's a little unpredictable.
00:31:10He has a very unique style of racing.
00:31:13He's, you know, a lot of arms whenever he skates and everything like that,
00:31:18so he can be kind of dangerous to be close to.
00:31:22Friendship goes out the window.
00:31:23The respect is always there, but it's not like he's going to let me win whatever he's trying to win.
00:31:29He's a wild racer, so you have to be wary of that guy because if he falls in front of you
00:31:36or tries to make a risky move on a turn or something like that, that can sewer me.
00:31:41I'm wary of riders like him.
00:31:43While we were in Mont Delac in Wisconsin, there was a race going on in Austria and then one in France.
00:32:03The way the points system is set up for the 2023 season is all based on your top three finishes.
00:32:15Because there's races all over the globe and these athletes aren't making a lot of money,
00:32:19it only seemed fair to just take the top three points and then that determined the world champion.
00:32:24Jack, Rob, and Luke Webb, Aussie crasher, all went to Austria first and then France.
00:32:33And then they met up with us in Quebec.
00:32:35The France track was a fast track.
00:32:37It was a bit sketchy.
00:32:39Racing in the Alps, probably unreal.
00:32:41Like you look out to the track and you just see French Alps and just a badass track in front of you.
00:32:47And it's kind of sad that when you're on the track, you're only focused on the track.
00:32:50Because it would be, I think if you took a step back, it'd be quite impressive to actually take in
00:32:54where you're skating to that point.
00:32:56Actually, it went all right.
00:32:57That's definitely not my style of track.
00:32:59But, you know, I don't know.
00:33:01The first race, kind of dusting off the cobwebs, getting in the groove.
00:33:04That race in Canada, man, that was brutal conditions.
00:33:23It was probably the coldest race I've ever raced in or we've ever had an ice cross.
00:33:28It was definitely the windiest and visibility was very low.
00:33:34And you didn't want any point of your skin exposed because it was so cold and windy.
00:33:38And we didn't get any training runs.
00:33:40We just went right to time trials.
00:33:42And it was just basically like skating a track blind.
00:33:45So it was interesting.
00:33:47You know, that's just what we have to deal with in this sport.
00:33:50Unfortunately, the spot that we were going was like minus 40.
00:33:54It wasn't the best weather and everything.
00:33:56The coldest I've ever been.
00:33:57That track is officially the coldest track I've ever skated in.
00:34:00And it was actually kind of fun.
00:34:03So pump tracks are my thing.
00:34:05It was a bit annoying.
00:34:06We didn't get as many runs on the track as I would like.
00:34:09Because I think with a pump track, there are a lot of technicalities.
00:34:12You need to get right to go fast.
00:34:14So you'd be very efficient in your motions.
00:34:15And yeah, just the guys that beat me were just quick up.
00:34:20We have Luke Webb, the Aussie crasher at the outside gate here.
00:34:23Seems to be making it past the round of 64 more consistently.
00:34:26But not off to a good start here.
00:34:28He and Arthur Ford are bringing up the rear.
00:34:30Luke Webb in third place in that heat.
00:34:32And unfortunately is eliminated in the round of 32.
00:34:34And you could see the disappointment on his face.
00:34:36But 22nd place is not a bad result here at all for Webby.
00:34:40I had a lot of negative thoughts going into Quebec after I saw the track and saw the conditions.
00:34:45And then I had a talk with Jack.
00:34:47And we were just kind of bitching about the track and everything.
00:34:51And then we're like, you know what?
00:34:52This is something different.
00:34:53This is something maybe we're not good at.
00:34:55So let's take that as a challenge and go out there.
00:34:57And we're racing here regardless.
00:34:58So we need to make the best out of it.
00:35:02The wind's so high.
00:35:04It's so fucking cold out that the ice is just absolute garbage.
00:35:09And then when it came to race day, I ended up kind of clipping skates and taking a toe pick.
00:35:13I looked like a ballerina on ice and spun out.
00:35:16And I just couldn't catch back up.
00:35:17So I was eliminated.
00:35:18I think I finished like, I don't know, 20th.
00:35:21So not my best work.
00:35:23Britton struggled.
00:35:24Got knocked out.
00:35:25Round of 32.
00:35:26Jack struggled.
00:35:27Got knocked out.
00:35:27Round of 32.
00:35:29Ozzy struggled.
00:35:30Got knocked out.
00:35:31Round of 32.
00:35:32I mean, you turn that first corner and you basically hit a brick wall of 40-mile-per-hour wind.
00:35:36But then there's Rob Whirling.
00:35:43So Quebec was maybe one of the most interesting races I've ever been a part of.
00:35:49That is the coldest weather I've ever had to deal with.
00:35:52Rob Whirling just effortlessly stepping over the rollers, making it look too easy.
00:35:56I actually felt really comfortable on that track.
00:36:00I know a lot of people felt awkward on it because it was really hard to generate speed
00:36:03because there wasn't a lot of downhill on it.
00:36:05That honestly might be one of the most comfortable tracks I've felt on all year.
00:36:09He's stable on his feet.
00:36:11He made Quebec look easy.
00:36:12So we have two Canadians, Robin Whirling and Stephen Cox, in the finals here in the only race in Canada this season.
00:36:22And they get a great start as Rob pulls out in front.
00:36:24No surprise here as he has looked smooth as butter on this national ice cross track.
00:36:33Rob leads in this final race from the beginning till the end
00:36:36and takes his place atop the podium for the first time in his ice cross career.
00:36:42We'll see what happens the rest of the season,
00:36:45but right now Rob is setting himself up for his first world championship.
00:36:48...
00:36:58...
00:37:07My name is Robin Woirling, I'm 26 years old and this is my sixth season
00:37:37competing in ice cross.
00:37:38Yeah so growing up I'd say my two main sports were tennis in the summer and hockey in the
00:37:43winters and yeah in 2017 I competed in ice cross for the first time.
00:37:49There was a junior category in my hometown of Ottawa so I went to the track it was definitely
00:37:54pretty intimidating it was a big end of year season track and I'd never skated downhill
00:37:58before but you know first couple runs were a little rough but I mean I was hooked instantly
00:38:04and yeah I've competed every season since.
00:38:10So obviously there are some difficulties with ice cross it definitely requires a lot of
00:38:15time and a lot of travel but I've been fortunate enough to kind of mold a career around ice
00:38:21cross.
00:38:22I create content full time now although I've got to travel pretty far and spend a lot of
00:38:26time going to these races I can create some pretty incredible content while doing so.
00:38:30I fell asleep across the border in the chat Europe.
00:38:37Look innocent.
00:38:38Oh right there you gotta press that baby.
00:38:39Here we are.
00:38:40Here we go.
00:38:42Hello.
00:38:43All right.
00:38:44Hey how are you guys?
00:38:45Yeah fine.
00:38:46So where are you guys coming from today?
00:38:59I'm back.
00:39:00And what's the purpose of your trip?
00:39:01Ice cross.
00:39:02And this is like a team or something?
00:39:04And what's the purpose of your trip?
00:39:06Ice cross.
00:39:07And this is like a team or something?
00:39:09Yeah.
00:39:10Yeah, it's all right.
00:39:34It'll be worse.
00:39:38It'll definitely be worse.
00:39:41Checking out the state of the ice right now.
00:39:45We've had low freezing temperatures for the last couple days at night.
00:39:50But during the day, it's been a love melting point.
00:39:55You guys are crazy.
00:39:56Are you guys all the athletes?
00:39:57I'm super familiar with this trail.
00:40:00But it's so fun, huh?
00:40:02I imagine this would be perfect for what you guys are doing.
00:40:05It's going to be fast, that's for sure.
00:40:06You guys be safe.
00:40:07Have fun.
00:40:08And that was the last we ever saw, Jim Bob.
00:40:13The weather here at Lost Valley has been a battle.
00:40:18It is very, very tough to have an ice cross race when the average daily temp isn't below freezing.
00:40:28So, we just got done with our first exploratory run on the track.
00:40:35And it's a fun track.
00:40:38It's really nice.
00:40:39You know, this is the first time skates have been on it.
00:40:41And it's a little risky though right now because of the warm temperature.
00:40:45Trying to find the balance between pushing our limits and also being mindful of the status of the ice.
00:40:52MEMO
00:40:57And the passage and the warm summertime
00:40:58overburden.
00:40:59byasser
00:41:03I hello
00:41:04Where are we
00:41:04We are
00:41:09We are
00:41:10We are
00:41:12were
00:41:13We have
00:41:15You'll notice, at the bottom, the athletes are finding creative ways to stop.
00:41:28Because the ice is so soft and it's so warm out, there's not a safe way to stop as they
00:41:33normally would.
00:41:35Yeah, so Maine was obviously pretty interesting this year.
00:41:40There wasn't really any ice, unfortunately the weather just wasn't really cooperating.
00:41:44So the track was pretty much snow, so you pretty much had to stay tucked like a skier, and
00:41:48then just kind of bomb down the hill.
00:42:02Britton comes down, nice run, finished in the top 10.
00:42:05Jack, same thing, comes down, top 10 finish, and neither one of them really thinking about
00:42:10injury.
00:42:11It's all about the ice in front of them.
00:42:15So we see Rob, and I'm pumped.
00:42:21I'm pumped to see this guy on a long track where he can glide and really get some speed
00:42:25going.
00:42:27And then he cruises, just zigzag, all the way down the track.
00:42:31And I'm like, what is he doing?
00:42:36So I decided to really take it easy on time trials and pretty much ended up walking down
00:42:38the track.
00:42:39I think I was, like, second last after qualifications.
00:42:46Because of that, Rob has now set himself up to have the worst gate selection throughout the entire
00:43:06event.
00:43:07Is he good enough for that not to matter?
00:43:13Yeah.
00:43:14Hey, Madre.
00:43:15Hey, Blue.
00:43:16Happy birthday.
00:43:18Are y'all having fun over there?
00:43:20So much fun.
00:43:21Are you having fun?
00:43:22Yeah, I'm sorry I missed the party.
00:43:23Hi, Granny.
00:43:24Wonderful party.
00:43:25I know.
00:43:26It looks like a lot of fun.
00:43:27I'm bummed to miss it.
00:43:28Are you ready for tomorrow morning?
00:43:29Uh, as ready as I'm going to be to ski down an ice cross track.
00:43:31I just wanted to call and tell you guys that I love y'all and I miss y'all, and I'm sorry
00:43:32I'm missing your birthday again.
00:43:33Every year I'm traveling for racing on your birthday, so.
00:43:35It's okay.
00:43:36You're always in my heart boot.
00:43:37Love you.
00:43:38I know.
00:43:39Love y'all very much.
00:43:40Cheers.
00:43:41I love you.
00:43:42I love you all very much.
00:43:43Cheers.
00:43:44I love you.
00:43:45I love you.
00:43:46I love you.
00:43:47I love you.
00:43:48I love you.
00:43:49I love you.
00:43:50I love you.
00:43:51I love you.
00:43:52I love you.
00:43:53I love you all very much.
00:43:54Cheers.
00:43:55He, he does this and he takes two months of the year away from his business and his dog
00:44:01and his family and his girlfriend takes two months away to help this sport grow.
00:44:09One slip up, one inch.
00:44:11That's all it takes.
00:44:12That's the difference between walking away from this season and not walking away.
00:44:16You have to be in the zone.
00:44:18You have to be able to block out the noise.
00:44:21Jack is a rarity.
00:44:41He stayed healthy in the sport for a very long time.
00:44:44He just has an ability to visualize things where other people don't.
00:44:51My mindset, I'm always just trying to live in the present moment.
00:44:54You know, that's when I'm happiest.
00:44:55I'm not, you know, worrying about the future or, you know, thinking about the past or what,
00:45:01what the way things could have been, you know.
00:45:03Ice Cross came into my life at a time when I really needed it.
00:45:10It was a time when I was really struggling.
00:45:12You know, after I graduated college and I wasn't playing hockey anymore and hockey had been such a central part of my life from when I was two years old.
00:45:21I was really lost.
00:45:23It was almost like I didn't know who I was.
00:45:28I was really lost.
00:45:29I don't know why this is so hard to, like, say, but, um, man, I fell really, really deep into, uh, into drugs and alcohol.
00:45:43And, uh, wow, man.
00:45:51It was, it was like, it was really consuming me.
00:45:54You know, I don't regret any of the, any of my past.
00:46:10You know, a lot of those were good times and the rest was lessons learned.
00:46:15But, you know, I just feel like this is, this is good for this point in my life.
00:46:21And, and I felt like my drinking was very self-centered and it was always about me changing the way I felt.
00:46:30And the way that I want to live my life going forward is being of service to others and thinking about other people.
00:46:39And not myself so much.
00:46:41So, that's, that's, uh, that's one of the reasons why I'm sober.
00:46:44All right, uh, we have the guys at the top.
00:46:46All right, uh, we have the guys at the top.
00:46:48All right, uh, we have the guys at the top.
00:47:16Britain and Jack, great friends on the tour, have known each other for a very long time.
00:47:21And they actually usually travel together throughout the season.
00:47:24But what's going to happen when these two bodies clash?
00:47:27You guys ready?
00:47:28I'm going against one of my, one of my amigos, Jack Schramm.
00:47:32And he's a great racer, one of the best U.S. racers there is.
00:47:37Here we have a competitive round of 32 with good friends Britain Morris and Jack Schramm in the mix as well as Rob's younger brother Andrew Worling in the outside lane.
00:47:50Nothing new here.
00:47:51Good start for Britain and Jack Schramm.
00:47:54Jack closing a bit of the distance now and is right there on top of Britain Morris.
00:47:58Andrew carrying a lot of speed on the inside but can't quite get by Morris.
00:48:04And now Jack makes contact with Britain as they approach the hip.
00:48:07Oh, and that contact almost causes Britain to go down.
00:48:11And Andrew Worling passes right between them to take the lead.
00:48:17Jack and Andrew have this locked away.
00:48:19But oh no, Andrew hit some bad ice and he goes down head first across the finish line.
00:48:23And Britain is rightfully upset as it appeared like there was contact from behind that took him out of this race.
00:48:35When I crossed the gates, I was fucking pissed.
00:48:37I, of course, know that Jack would never intentionally take me out, especially coming in one or two.
00:48:42He didn't push me or anything like that.
00:48:44But he definitely made contact with me at a point that I'm super vulnerable.
00:48:48That line is very blurred.
00:48:51There's a big gray area.
00:48:53A lot of times when I'm racing, if I'm getting clutch and grabbed,
00:48:56I don't even realize it until I'm watching footage like afterwards.
00:49:00Also, it's really tough to see on camera, you know, exactly what's happening.
00:49:07I'm still kind of pissed about it, but I love Jack.
00:49:09So it's one of those things.
00:49:10It's just part of racing and things like that are going to happen.
00:49:14I don't know, like, there's this, like, instant karma, I swear.
00:49:19Riders ready.
00:49:20Back up lane one.
00:49:21Five seconds.
00:49:22There's some movement at the start gate and the line judge is telling Jack to back up.
00:49:25And now they're off.
00:49:28Now coming over that hit, Matt Johnson goes down hard with Jack right behind him now taking the lead.
00:49:33I won that heat and I go up to the top for my semifinal heat and I'm in the gate and they tell me that I'm not, that I'm not supposed to be racing this race.
00:49:46So I know Jack is disqualified and I see him getting off the gondola looking like a gladiator ready for battle.
00:49:52And I'm like, why is he here?
00:49:55Why have they not told him what happened?
00:49:57Like, this is not good.
00:50:00Did anybody tell them what happened?
00:50:02I did.
00:50:03I did.
00:50:06One of the four that are supposed to be up here again.
00:50:09Derek Abrahamson or Christian Richard.
00:50:14So who are we listening?
00:50:15So we have Jack up here instead of Derek.
00:50:21Yeah.
00:50:23Who do we have?
00:50:24Johnson?
00:50:25We have Jack instead of Derek.
00:50:28Dude, because he jumped the gate, Derek should be up there.
00:50:33Are you fucking kidding me?
00:50:34What?
00:50:35I told you twice to back up, man.
00:50:36Why didn't he jump the gate?
00:50:37I told me you're not allowed to be in front of the 2x4 after the five-second warning.
00:50:42I scooted back.
00:50:43No, you didn't.
00:50:44You did it twice though.
00:50:45I heard you say it right next to me.
00:50:47In front of the 2x4 is what?
00:50:49Part of my body.
00:50:50It's easy to see up front of the first gate.
00:50:54Get the third guy out of the gate.
00:50:57Come on, man.
00:50:58Can I do a fucking call like that?
00:50:59Fuck.
00:51:05I'm sorry.
00:51:06I'm sorry.
00:51:07Go, go.
00:51:08Get off the mountain, please.
00:51:09Go.
00:51:11I didn't throw that.
00:51:12Go.
00:51:13I didn't throw.
00:51:14It's mine.
00:51:15Please.
00:51:16Yeah, there's a little bit of a scene.
00:51:18And yeah, but it is what it is.
00:51:20You know, you move on.
00:51:21I mean, he should be upset.
00:51:23He should have been told at the bottom, you know, before he got out of that pent-up energy.
00:51:28And that energy has to be released.
00:51:31It's got to go somewhere.
00:51:33But it's a difficult time at Ice Cross right now.
00:51:37Most of the events are being run by local volunteers.
00:51:39And sometimes those volunteers don't know a whole lot about the sport.
00:51:42Jack was across that line.
00:51:44It is what it is.
00:51:45You've got to take the punches and move on to the next one.
00:51:48Meanwhile, we have Ozzy Crasser just cruising along, having the best race of his season.
00:51:54My name's Luke Webb.
00:51:55I've been doing Ice Cross for 33 years.
00:51:57No, sorry.
00:51:5833 years?
00:51:5933 years, yeah.
00:52:00That it is, yeah.
00:52:07So yeah, so my name's Luke Webb.
00:52:09I'm 33 years old.
00:52:10I've been doing Ice Cross for six years.
00:52:13Correct me if I'm wrong, but Australia does not have a lot of snow.
00:52:17So I think it would be weird to have an Australian in such a sport that has a lot of snow.
00:52:24I can't surf, so I may as well not be in Australia, I feel.
00:52:28But mainly, yeah, I've played inline hockey since I was young.
00:52:32Started ice hockey from like 21 onwards.
00:52:34And then, yeah, just kind of finished junior at that point.
00:52:38Ozzy Crasser, Luke Webb.
00:52:40Oh man, this guy is hilarious.
00:52:43First time I met Ozzy Crasser was in Lesar, I think, at a Canadian Riders' Cup.
00:52:49And, I don't know, he's just in the locker room drinking beers.
00:52:53And this dude's so far from home.
00:52:55He's the furthest from home.
00:52:56His results may not, you know, be the best every race.
00:52:59But this guy, just like, you gotta respect the guy that just, like, takes hits.
00:53:03And just keep coming and coming and coming back for more.
00:53:07So, and, dude, he's got such a great attitude.
00:53:10Always smiling and joking around.
00:53:12One of my favorite racers, for sure.
00:53:16He is an absolute character and always brings the fun.
00:53:21But he would come in last place with a smile on his face.
00:53:24And then he'd go to the bars with you and drink you under the table.
00:53:28It's just been really cool to see his progression and how dedicated he was to getting better.
00:53:34And I know how much he loves Ice Cross.
00:53:44After uni, it was quite hard to get at work.
00:53:47Yeah, just kind of not in the greatest mindset.
00:53:51Had a previously bad relationship with a partner at the time.
00:53:54And I kind of just made my own escape.
00:53:58And I wasn't really doing anything.
00:53:59Kind of in a rut.
00:54:00Just doing the same thing day in, day out.
00:54:01Going to work.
00:54:02Coming home.
00:54:03Having beers.
00:54:04Going to play inline hockey.
00:54:05And that was pretty much like my week every time.
00:54:07Yeah.
00:54:08Went to Canada for a month.
00:54:09Did four races in four weeks.
00:54:11It was my first time experiencing real winter.
00:54:14And then, yeah, went back and just couldn't stop thinking about Ice Cross.
00:54:17So I ended up selling all my stuff and moved to Canada.
00:54:20And then lived in a car for three months.
00:54:22Settled down in Toronto.
00:54:23And I didn't really have a plan.
00:54:25Kind of just wanted to get out of Australia as quick as I could.
00:54:27I keep coming back to Ice Cross.
00:54:29Mainly because if I didn't, I probably wouldn't be here.
00:54:31It doesn't matter what happens throughout the year.
00:54:33What shit happens in the rest of my life.
00:54:35This seven, eight week season is kind of what I focus everything into.
00:54:41So you say you wouldn't be here.
00:54:42What do you mean?
00:54:43You wouldn't be in America?
00:54:45No.
00:54:46So just like mental health issues running throughout my family.
00:54:50And then there's been a few years, which during COVID as well, but before that had been pretty bad for me.
00:54:55Like you could tell it was getting bad for me because we'd be skating at Fenway Park and I was too depressed to get out of bed, put my skates on and skate.
00:55:02Probably the one of the most iconic tracks we've ever had.
00:55:05I needed the time off.
00:55:07I needed the time away from people, from work, just a chance to reset everything.
00:55:12Coming through all that and then working through with what I've dealt with, I'd probably have to say the Ice Cross has probably saved my life.
00:55:19The greatest compliment that you can give any athlete is that they reach their full potential.
00:55:25But every now and then you see an athlete reach beyond their full potential.
00:55:30And athletes like Ozzy prove that sometimes the impossible is possible.
00:55:35I know where I'm weak and where I'm strong and what I can do.
00:55:38And racing with these guys for so long, I know what their skill sets are.
00:55:50Skate fast, don't fall. Skate fast, don't fall. Skate fast, don't fall.
00:56:00Last chance qualifier here with Luke Webb, someone who's familiar with having to earn his way into the competitive races.
00:56:10So that's one of my problems with my personality, I feel. I always chase like that rush.
00:56:15I don't think people understand how much you put onto that track in that 45 seconds.
00:56:19It's just the actual adrenaline release.
00:56:23As expected, Warling finishes light years ahead of everyone else, but Webb comes in second with relative ease.
00:56:29Round of 32 race and we have Luke Webb going up against a very experienced athlete in Steven Cox.
00:56:40As soon as you get into the gate and that five second warning is called, like everything goes silent.
00:56:47That's probably the most peaceful time you'll ever experience in life.
00:56:51Cox with a great start and Luke Webb looking strong in second place.
00:56:55As they go over the rollers here, Webb seems to be closing that gap against Cox.
00:57:04Over the hip now and Webb is right there positioning himself to take a pass on this downhill to the finish.
00:57:09Cox looks back as the big body of Luke Webb is propelling him down this track.
00:57:13He had a couple of extra cheeseburgers for lunch and it's paying off.
00:57:15Round of 32, I actually ended up beating one of the faster guys.
00:57:21So I came first in that heat, which was a first for me.
00:57:23So I actually ended up to have made it to the round of 16, which was huge because I didn't expect that at all.
00:57:28Coming into the round of 16, I was in second place looking at a round of eight, which would have been unreal.
00:57:35My first top 10 finish ever.
00:57:36And Webb looking great again, finds himself in second coming over the hip and oh no, he overcooks it and blows through the netting.
00:57:45Racing happens and I got tangled up with one of the guys on the hips and we both went down.
00:57:50Ended up getting caught in the net and needed some spectators to help me get out.
00:57:52So it was a bit disappointing because I felt like I had a really good shot in that track.
00:57:57But still my best finish of the season so far, so I can't complain.
00:58:01My head was out here, man. My fucking foot's back here.
00:58:04All pros basically screwed up to this guy.
00:58:06No problem, Ozzy crashing for no reason.
00:58:09So Ozzy making it into the top 16, that's a huge win.
00:58:13I mean, you love to see somebody not give up, take the punches and just keep moving forward one step at a time.
00:58:19And then on the other side, you have Rob Whirling, who is trying to take back to back wins from Quebec and Maine to continue his run at a world championship.
00:58:29Rob has a huge disadvantage in these races because of his time trial.
00:58:33Shiny stuff, stay away from it.
00:58:42Have a good race, guys.
00:58:44Be safe.
00:58:45Rob Whirling with an outside gate, but it's no problem for him and he takes an early lead with Eric Milinkovic right behind him.
00:58:58So I got out of the gate. No issues.
00:59:01But yeah, Eric Milinkovic made a pass like halfway down the track.
00:59:06Milinkovic with a beautiful pass on the inside of Rob Whirling.
00:59:09Rob Whirling sucks up that roller. Oh, but he almost goes down. The ice conditions here are rough.
00:59:15Oh, and right as I say that, Whirling goes down.
00:59:18And then I hit a rut, went down pretty bad. Max Nadeau fell over top of me and I kind of was like, well, my race is over.
00:59:27And then I take two strides and I see Eric about three meters deep into the side netting.
00:59:32Eric with a commanding lead now. Oh, goes down and slides into the netting.
00:59:37He's rolled up tighter than one of Snoop Dogg's bombers.
00:59:40Now Max Nadeau and Rob Whirling, who went down together, are in the lead.
00:59:44What a turn of events here in Las Valley.
00:59:47And Rob finds a way to come back and finish first in this quarterfinal seat.
00:59:51Crazy finish to this battle.
00:59:54And just reiterates that never give up attitude.
00:59:56Stephen Cox and Andrew Whirling will be moving on to the finals.
01:00:11Also a competitive heat here, but Max Nadeau and Robin Whirling hold strong and punch their tickets to the finals.
01:00:17OK, so we have an all-Canadian finals here with Rob's younger brother, Andrew, who is a bit of a surprise here in the finals, but has been in good form on this track.
01:00:30There's the always dangerous Stephen Cox, who seemingly can do it all.
01:00:34Mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding.
01:00:36Next to him, an ice-cross veteran, Max Nadeau, both who have already made it to the finals race in this season.
01:00:42And rounding off your top four, Robin Whirling, who had his first ever win in Quebec last week.
01:00:45And they're off, and Rob gets out to another great start.
01:00:52Doesn't look like anybody's going to be able to catch him here as he's holding a strong lead for the moment.
01:01:00Andrew Whirling trying to fight off Max Nadeau to the podium with his brother, but Max makes the pass, and Robin Whirling wins for the second time in two weeks.
01:01:13Let's go!
01:01:19And in first place, Robin Whirling!
01:01:22So the North American trek of the 2023 ice-cross season has had a lot of action.
01:01:41I mean, Britain being able to overcome injury in Mont-de-Loc to finish second.
01:01:46And then you have the weather in Quebec. It really kicked all of our asses, except for Rob.
01:01:51And then Maine, the stories of the season really culminated to a peak.
01:01:55Now we head to Europe to see if the athletes can continue to pursue their goals for the season.
01:02:01All right, boys! To Finland we go!
01:02:07Here we go!
01:02:08Here we go!
01:02:09We are going!
01:02:10Here we go!
01:02:15Let's go!
01:02:16Transcription by CastingWords
01:02:46Radalampi is always a fun race, always been one of my favorites because we're racing literally through the woods and through trees.
01:03:00The Radalampi track's never a track for me. Really a lot of skating, very technical skating, nothing I can ever train for back home just because you can't get the ice time. There's no skate trainers back home.
01:03:10Ozzy didn't have the best time in time trials, so he'll have to go through last chance qualifiers.
01:03:16Last chance qualifiers is when there's not enough athletes to build up a round of 64, so depending on your time trial, if you got below 32, you have to compete to get into the round of 32.
01:03:28Luke Webb finds himself in the last chance qualifier. Once again, he's lined up with newcomer Antonin Chibersh.
01:03:40Webb needs to find a way to make a pass here if he wants to get into the actual races.
01:03:44Oh, and that's a disappointing finish here for Luke Webb, all the way from Australia, and he's eliminated the LCQs.
01:03:59You know, this sport comes around once a year. These guys get to push reality to the side and live out their dreams.
01:04:06And sometimes it doesn't always go the way you hoped that it would go.
01:04:13Oh!
01:04:15In the shadow of a mountain, there's the shadow of a man, where he hides from the trouble he created with his troubled hands.
01:04:28There in the darkness
01:04:33Where the sun don't ever shine
01:04:36He wallows in his sorrow
01:04:40Beneath the aspens and the pines
01:04:44He hopes it'll all soon be over
01:04:51His blood runs cold
01:04:56So Britton finished in the round of 32 again
01:04:59For the third time in a row
01:05:00Since Mondaloc he is trending in the opposite direction
01:05:03His goals for getting top 10 in the world
01:05:06And number one American racer
01:05:07Are starting to slip away
01:05:08Jack has made it to the quarterfinals
01:05:10For the third time this season
01:05:12And for some athletes that would be considered a win
01:05:14But for Jack he's been a veteran for a long time
01:05:17And expects to be close to the top
01:05:18And he's struggling to break through to the semis this season
01:05:21Of him in the trees
01:05:25As he guides
01:05:26He the devil
01:05:28What's cool about this race in Rotterwampi, Finland
01:05:30You get to see all these kids come out
01:05:32And these people come out of the woods
01:05:34I mean, you're just in a village in the middle of Finland
01:05:36The Finns just always put on a great race
01:05:39And the fans in Finland love ice cross
01:05:42And they always come out to support
01:05:43Marco DeLago
01:05:522014 world champion
01:05:54He has competed
01:05:56And beaten the best of the best
01:05:58Marco is sneaky, sneaky good
01:06:00He's not the fastest or the most athletic
01:06:03But he's just so agile
01:06:05And technically sound on his skates
01:06:07Marco is such a good ambassador for the sport
01:06:11Because he's seen the highs
01:06:13He's seen the lows
01:06:14But he doesn't lose hope
01:06:16And when you have the leaders at the top
01:06:18Still striving forward
01:06:19With that same fire in their heart
01:06:20That they had in the beginning
01:06:21Everybody else just kind of follows suit
01:06:24And Marco DeLago is looking solid
01:06:26Weaving in and out of the forest here in Finland
01:06:28Angler and Nakari try to make a push in the home stretch
01:06:35But it's Marco DeLago
01:06:36Who will hold on for victory here
01:06:38His blood runs cold with shame
01:06:43But death ain't never gonna find him
01:06:50For after all he's just a shadow
01:06:55And he'll hang from the gallows
01:06:59For he's only the shadow
01:07:03Of a man
01:07:08What are you doing with your shoes?
01:07:16Oh, come on, snooze!
01:07:19Let's go!
01:07:20It was burning my feet last time
01:07:21This song's about love, man
01:07:30Yeah!
01:07:33Come on!
01:07:34You know, I'm close with my family
01:07:50That I love to be around
01:07:52Luckily, this year
01:07:54My girlfriend, Kelly
01:07:55Was able to come up
01:07:56It's good going in now
01:07:57To this last week
01:07:58I just, I feel relaxed
01:08:00I feel, I feel kind of at home now
01:08:02And I feel like that's gonna help me in the race
01:08:05Smiling back
01:08:07Baby
01:08:08We've been here before
01:08:14And you're sweet, sweet loving
01:08:22You're seeing me
01:08:25Squirrel on the track
01:08:47Yeah, it made for a good video
01:08:49That was my first experience
01:08:50With an animal on the track
01:08:51Besides myself
01:08:52Leading up to the race
01:09:17I think that's like
01:09:18One of the worst I've ever felt
01:09:21I took a couple bad crashes
01:09:22These time trials
01:09:24Are extremely important for him
01:09:25Because whoever's out front
01:09:27Is gonna have a narrow path
01:09:29To block everybody off
01:09:30It's gonna be tough
01:09:31To pass anybody on this track
01:09:32After that first time trial run
01:09:42Like I was not
01:09:43I was not in a good headspace
01:09:44At all
01:09:44Soini is the winner-takes-all event
01:09:53For the guys that are at the top
01:09:55Which would be Rob Wuerling
01:09:56Mirko Lati
01:09:57And Marco DeLago
01:09:59Marco DeLago
01:10:03Is probably the best racer
01:10:06Right now
01:10:07He's the veteran of the sport
01:10:09Former world champion
01:10:10And then Mirko Lati
01:10:11The high-flying fin
01:10:13That wants to win
01:10:13A world championship
01:10:14On his home turf
01:10:16Or his home ice
01:10:17And he's got nothing
01:10:19But raw strength
01:10:20And power
01:10:21In his legs
01:10:22So Rob has to have
01:10:28A good second time trial
01:10:29He has to
01:10:30Or he's not gonna win
01:10:31A world championship
01:10:32Huge, huge finish
01:10:48In the time trials for Rob
01:10:50The problem is
01:10:51He finished right behind
01:10:52Marco DeLago
01:10:53And Mirko Lati
01:10:54I needed a good time trial run
01:10:58Especially on this track
01:10:59This start's gonna be so important
01:11:00Gate picks are so important
01:11:01Because it's gonna be so hard
01:11:03To pass in the middle of this track
01:11:04It's narrow
01:11:05A lot of features
01:11:07Without a lot of room
01:11:08To try and pass on the side
01:11:10I'm still sitting in a
01:11:16In a good position overall
01:11:18In the world rankings
01:11:19Leading top 10 right now
01:11:20Even though I have not done
01:11:23As well as I expect myself to do
01:11:28I have still a lot of confidence
01:11:30Going in
01:11:31And I know that now I'm here
01:11:34And now it's on a bigger stage
01:11:36And it matters more
01:11:37And I'm going to do better
01:11:38I'm just trying to finish
01:11:43The season strong
01:11:44I know it's a lot of guys
01:11:46Usually, you know
01:11:47A little homesick
01:11:49Injured
01:11:49And maybe a little discouraged
01:11:51If they're not in the
01:11:53World Championship race anymore
01:11:54And I'm just trying to take it
01:11:56One heat at a time
01:11:57Technically I'm ranked number one
01:12:00But I mean
01:12:02Take that with a grain of salt
01:12:03Because I had two races
01:12:05In North America
01:12:05That a lot of the European guys
01:12:07Didn't show up to
01:12:07So really
01:12:08If it's anybody's race
01:12:09This weekend
01:12:10It's going to be
01:12:11Probably the toughest race
01:12:12Of the year
01:12:13And whoever
01:12:14Has the best result here
01:12:16Is going to take it all
01:12:16The last race
01:12:20Is always the hardest
01:12:20And for a track like this
01:12:22I feel good on it
01:12:23But I'm just not fast on it
01:12:25I don't know why
01:12:26And then
01:12:27This track
01:12:28The start means a lot
01:12:29And I know that's also
01:12:29A weakness for me
01:12:37Seeing all the fans
01:12:48Come out here
01:12:49To this event
01:12:50In the middle of nowhere
01:12:51In Finland
01:12:52It just gives you
01:12:54A different feeling
01:12:55Almost like there's
01:12:56A spark in the air
01:12:57Just waiting to ignite
01:12:59The big-bodied
01:13:01Australian Luke Webb
01:13:02Looking over the edge
01:13:03At the intimidating start
01:13:05Here in Soini
01:13:05No LCQs
01:13:08For the Aussie Crasher
01:13:09This weekend
01:13:09As he faces off
01:13:10Against Jack Schramm
01:13:11In the round of 64
01:13:12Jack out in the lead
01:13:13With Webb trailing in the rear
01:13:15But looking to make a pass here
01:13:16All three of them go down
01:13:17Over the snow ghost
01:13:18And it's chaos on track
01:13:20Meanwhile
01:13:25With all the crashes behind him
01:13:27Jack Schramm
01:13:28Is well out in the lead
01:13:29And will easily advance
01:13:30Into the round of 32
01:13:32The Aussie Crasher
01:13:35Is a crowd
01:13:35Favorite
01:13:36And you wanted to see him
01:13:37Well here he is folks
01:13:38And he'll come down
01:13:41And slide into home plate
01:13:42This season might have
01:13:54Ended a little bit shorter
01:13:55Than Aussie hoped it would have
01:13:56But you can't deny
01:13:58How far he's come
01:13:59Since he first started
01:14:00Competing in ice cross
01:14:01He is still
01:14:03The only competitive
01:14:04Ice cross skater
01:14:05Ever
01:14:06From Australia
01:14:07He's not just
01:14:08In the top 1%
01:14:09He is the top 1%
01:14:10And he also
01:14:12Provides a joy
01:14:13That this sport
01:14:14Desperately needs
01:14:15Here we have the POV
01:14:17Of Rob Worling
01:14:18Who gets ready
01:14:19For his first race
01:14:20At this event
01:14:20In the world championships
01:14:21Here in the round of 64
01:14:22A great start
01:14:30By Worling as he leads the way
01:14:32Followed by Kevin Schibo
01:14:33Who's super quick
01:14:34And a great glider
01:14:36Through the snow
01:14:49And Worling looking
01:14:51Very comfortable
01:14:52On this track
01:14:52Which is good
01:14:53As he and Mirko Latte
01:14:55Are the frontrunners
01:14:56For the world championship
01:14:57Rob and Worling
01:15:02Making it look easy
01:15:03Breezing through this round
01:15:04Of 64 heat to advance on
01:15:06Here's a look
01:15:10From Britain's POV
01:15:11As the athletes
01:15:11Get ready for this round
01:15:13Of 32 heat
01:15:13I knew that
01:15:15I had to move on
01:15:16Because I had had this
01:15:18You know
01:15:19Quarterfinal monkey
01:15:21On my back
01:15:21I have to make it
01:15:22Through this round
01:15:23I'm not going to have
01:15:23Another disappointment
01:15:24A great start
01:15:33For Britain Morris
01:15:34As he pulls out
01:15:35In front of arguably
01:15:36One of the most competitive
01:15:37Eats in the round of 32
01:15:38A solid pass
01:15:40On the inside
01:15:40By Ricard van Ville
01:15:41To take the lead
01:15:42The vet is so good
01:15:43At that
01:15:43But Morris is right
01:15:45On his tail
01:15:45Both of them battling
01:15:46Again in another round
01:15:48Against each other
01:15:49Britain fighting off
01:15:50The very talented
01:15:51French racer
01:15:52Jonathan Merlino
01:15:53As he tries to make a pass
01:15:54Britain cuts off
01:15:55Merlino's line
01:15:55Against the tires
01:15:56At 180
01:15:57Great race defense
01:15:58By Britain Morris
01:15:59Here as he and
01:16:00Ricard van Ville
01:16:01Come around the finish line
01:16:02And advance to the
01:16:03Quarterfinals round
01:16:04Of this world championship
01:16:05Monkey off the fucking back
01:16:07I finished a good second
01:16:12I had a little bit
01:16:13Of a battle
01:16:13With one of the other racers
01:16:15One of the French racers
01:16:16Who has beat me
01:16:17Time and time again
01:16:18So it was one of those
01:16:20Where I had to fight him off
01:16:21Right after the spine
01:16:22Going down the long
01:16:23Narrow pathway
01:16:24Before the last turn
01:16:25Into the finish
01:16:26We were battling
01:16:27We were making contact
01:16:29I could feel him
01:16:30On my back
01:16:31And on certain turns
01:16:32I had to cut him off
01:16:33And I just played it
01:16:34Aggressive and paid off
01:16:36The fans are into it here
01:16:42As we're getting ready
01:16:43For this quarterfinal heat
01:16:44Marco DeLago
01:16:45Almost jumped the gate
01:16:46But I think he got back
01:16:47In time
01:16:47And it's a great start
01:16:49As Luke Engler
01:16:50And Marco DeLago
01:16:51Get out there
01:16:52In front
01:16:52Jack Schramm
01:16:52Bringing up the rear
01:16:53Here
01:16:54Jack Schramm's got his work
01:16:55Cut out for him
01:16:55On this tight and technical track
01:16:57Oh
01:16:58Schramm hammered
01:16:59The dasher boards
01:17:00And he is down
01:17:01Hopefully he's okay
01:17:02Engler and DeLago
01:17:03Look strong in the lead
01:17:04Here though
01:17:05As they make that
01:17:05180 degree turn
01:17:07And head towards
01:17:08That finish line
01:17:09One and two
01:17:10To move on
01:17:11To the semifinals
01:17:11But still
01:17:12No sign of Jack Schramm
01:17:14Let's hope he's okay
01:17:15From that heavy
01:17:16Heavy crash
01:17:16Into the boards
01:17:17He's coming down
01:17:27So it looks like
01:17:33Jack Schramm is up
01:17:34And okay
01:17:34Gingerly moving down
01:17:36The track
01:17:36And passing out
01:17:38Some high fives
01:17:38To the fans
01:17:39So that's a good sign
01:17:40Jack's elimination
01:17:45In the quarterfinals
01:17:46Probably my favorite
01:17:48Moment of the season
01:17:49Seeing Jack get up
01:17:50And high five those fans
01:17:51All the way down the track
01:17:52Just with the class
01:17:54And humility
01:17:55Of a world champion
01:17:56Is a reflection
01:17:57Of this entire sport
01:17:58Fighting through the dark times
01:18:01With a smile on their faces
01:18:02To finish what they start
01:18:03You know you see this
01:18:27Insane track
01:18:28All the way down
01:18:29And then you just
01:18:29Kind of take a moment
01:18:30And think about
01:18:31What you're doing
01:18:32My dad used to always tell me
01:18:34That there's a thousand people
01:18:35That want to be in the spot
01:18:37That you're at
01:18:37And they're not
01:18:38You're here
01:18:39Enjoy the moment
01:18:41Be in the moment
01:18:41Be present in it
01:18:42And fuck it
01:18:43Whatever happens
01:18:43Happens
01:18:44We're set for another
01:18:48Quarterfinal action round
01:18:50Here with Robin Worling
01:18:51Richard von Wehe
01:18:52Linus Oelekainen
01:18:53And Britton Morris
01:18:54About to start
01:18:55And a good start
01:19:00Again by Britton Morris
01:19:01Trying to move
01:19:02To the inside of the track
01:19:03But getting into that battle
01:19:04With Richard von Wehe
01:19:05At each other's
01:19:06Shroves all day long
01:19:07And oh
01:19:08Over the snow goes
01:19:09Morris loops out
01:19:10And goes down
01:19:11Like a ton of bricks
01:19:12That was one of the bigger
01:19:13Crashes we've seen
01:19:14On this course
01:19:15Robin Worling
01:19:16Leading through the
01:19:17180 degree turn
01:19:18And he has got this one
01:19:19Locked down
01:19:20With a lot of gap
01:19:20Between him
01:19:21And second place
01:19:22Linus Oelekainen
01:19:23Who will advance
01:19:24To the semifinals
01:19:25Hopefully Britton Morris
01:19:27Is okay
01:19:27Ah he is
01:19:28As he comes across
01:19:29That finish line
01:19:29In fourth
01:19:30Unfortunate
01:19:30As a competitor
01:19:32Of course Britton
01:19:34Expected more
01:19:35Out of this season
01:19:35Great athletes
01:19:36Always expect more
01:19:37That's the right
01:19:38Mindset to have
01:19:39But once the
01:19:40Smoky ice clears
01:19:42And he gets to
01:19:43Look back on this season
01:19:44And reflect on
01:19:45Everything that he
01:19:46Accomplished
01:19:47He'll see what a
01:19:48Hell of a season
01:19:48There really was
01:19:49In a short amount
01:19:51Of time
01:19:51He's climbed the ranks
01:19:52And become the
01:19:53Number one racer
01:19:54In the US
01:19:54We did it
01:19:56We had a fun season
01:19:57It was successful
01:19:58I didn't get injured
01:20:00You're proud of
01:20:01What you did
01:20:01Semi-final action
01:20:10Here as DeLago
01:20:11Engler
01:20:12And Shane Renaud
01:20:13Battling it out
01:20:14DeLago takes
01:20:15The 180 turn
01:20:15In the lead
01:20:16And it will be him
01:20:17And Shane Renaud
01:20:18Moving on
01:20:19To the finals
01:20:19Great start
01:20:21Into this
01:20:21Semi-final
01:20:22By Robin Worling
01:20:23And Mirko Latte
01:20:23The two leaders
01:20:24In points
01:20:25Coming into this
01:20:26World Championship
01:20:26Race here
01:20:27Latte comes around
01:20:28The 180 turn
01:20:29In the lead
01:20:29With Worling
01:20:30Following close behind
01:20:31Latte's a big body
01:20:32And the two of them
01:20:33Lead from the start
01:20:34To the finish
01:20:34In the semi-final heat
01:20:35And we'll be moving on
01:20:36So we've got a showdown
01:20:38For the final
01:20:38A storybook ending
01:20:39We have Rob Worling
01:20:41And Mirko Latte
01:20:42And it just couldn't
01:20:43Be more perfect
01:20:44I mean these guys
01:20:45Have been the two
01:20:46Best athletes
01:20:47All season long
01:20:48Neither one of them
01:20:48Were able to make it
01:20:49To every single race
01:20:50But they are one and two
01:20:52In the world rankings
01:20:53As we speak
01:20:53And now they meet
01:20:54In the finals
01:20:55For the world championship
01:20:56On the flip side
01:20:57We have two more athletes
01:20:58That wouldn't mind
01:21:00Seeing themselves
01:21:00On that world championship
01:21:01Podium
01:21:02Shane Renaud
01:21:03Just an outrageous
01:21:04Athlete
01:21:05Just a complete character
01:21:06He's either going to
01:21:07Blow through some boards
01:21:08Or wind up on a podium
01:21:10You never know
01:21:11What you're going to get
01:21:11And then Marco DeLago
01:21:13The 2014 world champion
01:21:15And he just always
01:21:17Finds a way
01:21:17To end up
01:21:18Near the top
01:21:19Year in and year out
01:21:21Ice cross
01:21:28Has witnessed the summit
01:21:29Of the Red Bull mountain
01:21:30And the low
01:21:31Of the valley
01:21:32That followed COVID
01:21:33It has stared
01:21:36Rock bottom
01:21:36Square in the eyes
01:21:37And fought through
01:21:38Every inch of it
01:21:39In the face of adversity
01:21:41These athletes
01:21:42Chose not to back down
01:21:43But to rise
01:21:45They aren't just
01:21:47Skating on ice
01:21:47They are skating
01:21:49A thin line
01:21:50Between passion
01:21:50And uncertainty
01:21:51Their collective effort
01:21:56Breathes life
01:21:57Into a sport
01:21:57On the brink
01:21:58Of extinction
01:21:59Not only is it a story
01:22:01Of resilience
01:22:02But one that inspires
01:22:04It has a purpose
01:22:06Bigger than the sport
01:22:07Or the athletes
01:22:08Competing within it
01:22:10Life is unpredictable
01:22:20Filled with twists
01:22:22And turns
01:22:23The key isn't
01:22:24Avoiding the falls
01:22:25It's about finding
01:22:27The courage
01:22:27To get back up
01:22:28To rebuild
01:22:29And continue the race
01:22:31The athletes
01:22:33In this sport
01:22:34Are doing just that
01:22:35Their sacrifices
01:22:37Aren't just for the sport
01:22:39Alone
01:22:39It's an investment
01:22:41In the very essence
01:22:42Of what makes them
01:22:43Feel alive
01:22:43The story is beautiful
01:23:01Because of the battle
01:23:02Entangled within it
01:23:03Between the highs
01:23:05And the lows
01:23:05When it is all
01:23:07Said and done
01:23:08People will see
01:23:09That not only
01:23:10Did you face the darkness
01:23:11You became the light
01:23:12Within it
01:23:13Like a beacon
01:23:14For others to follow
01:23:15Ravin Varli
01:23:28World champion
01:23:33Suomessa from Finland
01:23:35Mirko
01:23:36Ice cross will survive
01:23:49And continue to inspire
01:23:50People all around the globe
01:23:51Warriors on ice
01:23:53United as one
01:23:54Who have the courage
01:23:56To walk into the fire
01:23:58When others wouldn't
01:23:59They will find
01:24:07Who have the courage
01:24:10Of Maybe
01:24:11For others to live
01:24:12Lets go
01:24:13To others to live
01:24:13handed in
01:24:13Twitter
01:24:14For others to face
