00:17senate president soto honorable senators ladies and gentlemen one point and really will surely
00:27go down in history as one of the most awe-inspiring political figures of our time truly a legend in his
00:36own lifetime too many the legend is rooted in his role as a formidable secretary of defense
00:47during the martial law years but he grew beyond that legend the sheer force of his intelligence
00:57political skill and powerful presence he became the most enduring public servant of our era
01:07sometimes intimidating but always respected by friend and foe alike for his unsurpassed brilliance
01:17beyond his public achievements manong johnny combined intellect with personal loyalty and kindness
01:28my family remembers this well and so of the five minutes i was given to make this eulogy may i spend
01:36a couple of minutes about our own personal memories during martial law from time to time my father former
01:47president just daddy macapagal was in limbo but he sometimes needed to make small requests from the
01:55government from the government for minor matters because he could no longer reach president marcus senior
02:02directly dad would write a note wait for senator and really a secretary and really at that time
02:11at the diplomatic reception handed to him and quietly explain his request i know of no
02:20instance in which secretary and really ever turned my father down and he unfairly gave him the dignity
02:30jew to a former president for this my family and i will always have a big place in our hearts and
02:39memories for manong johnny so for the baptism of my son dato we asked him to be godfather it was a role
02:51that he warmly accepted many years later i was executive director of the garment and textile export board
03:03and found myself colliding with powerful interests a senate hearing was condemned against me and in that
03:12hearing senator and really declared gloria macapagal arroyo is like caesar's wife she is not only without
03:22sin she also appears without sin oh that made my day and helped my career
03:29her we were senators together in the 10th congress and i had a chance to marvel at his mastery especially
03:40when he sponsored the comprehensive tax reform of 1997. when i was president he sponsored the human
03:51security act of 2007 something which our country needed to address the threat of terrorism to the national
04:01security of the country i was still president when senator and really became senate president and really
04:11under his leadership the senate passed many measures a lot of them really important to my administration
04:21may i just mention a few of them the comprehensive agrarian reform program extension act
04:30the expanded senior citizens act and the real estate investment act for social reform as well as for
04:40improving the investment in the aftermath of the maguindanao massacre he was in malacanang palace
04:51working late into the night helping me craft my proclamation of martial law in maguindanao
05:00manong johnny lived many lives in one lifetime successful lawyer bank chairman insurance commissioner customs
05:12commissioner finance secretary justice secretary defense secretary batasang pambansa member congressman senator senate
05:25president president and finally chief presidential legal council few filipinos have served the republic in so
05:34many capacities across so many eras with such longevity and impact the sharpness of his mind matched his
05:45longevity even in his later years he stayed intellectually awesome arguing with precision recalling history with detail
05:58an offering council grounded in decades of experience he was up to the end a statesman of rare endurance
06:12his clarity of thought and force of will continued to shape national discourse well into his twilight years
06:24well to bid farewell to mama and janinek once anvila secretary senate president we remember not only the legend that he became
06:36but also for my person and my family the man of loyalty death and humanity behind the legend
06:47his imprint in our nation and the lives he touched will endure may a grateful nation
06:56remembering him with respect and appreciation manong jani rest in peace and thank you
