A major Cloudflare outage hit the internet Tuesday morning, taking down multiple global websites. According to Benzinga reporting, platforms including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Elon Musk’s X, and even Downdetector were affected. Cloudflare says it detected a spike in “unusual traffic” around 6:20 a.m. ET and is still investigating the source. The company noted its full team is “all hands on deck” as services come back online.

Cloudflare plays a critical role in managing global web traffic and defending sites against DDoS attacks, so even minor disruptions can ripple across the internet. The outage comes just weeks after Amazon Web Services suffered a daylong incident followed by a global Microsoft Azure and 365 outage.

Cloudflare shares dropped more than 5% in premarket trading following the incident.

Watch to learn what happened, why so many sites went offline, and what this might mean for the stability of global cloud infrastructure.

00:00The internet didn't just blink, major platforms went dark, knocking ChatGPT, X, and even down
00:06detector offline for global users. But here's the twist, this wasn't a confirmed attack,
00:12it was a mysterious spike in traffic. Cloudflare observed a spike in unusual traffic around 6.20
00:18a.m. Eastern Time. The reaction was instant. Cloudflare shares slid more than 5% in pre-market
00:24trading this morning. So what caused the surge? The company admits they do not yet know the cause,
00:29but all hands are on deck. This comes less than a month after similar outages at Amazon and
00:35Microsoft. However, Cloudflare is the very service meant to guard against traffic overloads. Updates
00:41indicate they are continuing to investigate the issue right now. Their priority, making sure all
00:46global traffic is served without errors. So the real question is, is this a one-time spike or a
00:51vulnerability in the cloud?
