Royal Mint unveils new coin to celebrate Freddie Mercury
Britain's Royal Mint unveiled a special two pound coin on Tuesday, November 18, to honor the late British singer and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. The coin depicts Mercury in one of his most identifiable poses, taken from Queen's 1968 performance at Wembley Stadium with his back arched and arm stretched out. Mercury's signature is also inscribed alongside his portrait. A selection of the coins are also available in color capturing Mercury's yellow military-style jacket and white trousers with red stripes. The singer's sister Kashmira Bulsara visited the Royal Mint to strike the very first coin herself. The coin's release seems timely as this year marks the 40th anniversary of Queen's 1985 Live Aid performance and the release of the band's album "A Night at the Opera" which included their quintessential hit "Bohemian Rhapsody." 2025 also marks four decades since the release of Mercury's debut studio album "Mr. Bad Guy." The new coin is the latest addition to the Royal Mint's "Music Legends" series, which has previously honored David Bowie, Elton John and George Michael with coins, and will be available to purchase from Monday (November 18).
