00:00We're at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and today is a big day. We're celebrating Vela's 54th birthday. She's the third oldest gorilla in the world and she's doing just great. I think living in Southern California agrees with her.
00:18So as you can see there's lots of colored, brightly colored boxes and things and we filled them with some of their diet items, their normal food items and we included things like popcorn and peanuts that are like a special specialty treat. And all these things are under the umbrella of enrichment. We provide enrichment for our animals every day. They get novel items. Now today it's a birthday celebration so there's a lot more than normal.
00:44It helps mimic what they would do in the wild. They'd be foraging throughout the day and these kinds of things, novel items that they get every day help to encourage that behavior.
00:55You'll see things like paper towel rolls and they're stuck with like hay or air popcorn, sometimes a couple of peanuts or sunflower seeds, raisins, little things. These all come to us from donations and we are so appreciative of all the people that donate online to our wish list.
01:12It helps not only the gorillas but all the animals in the park.
01:15So Monroe, the youngest member of our troop, he's just five months old and this is his first birthday party that he gets to attend and he's into it 100% as you can see.
01:24He's starting to become very active and independent. Kokomo still keeps a very close eye on him. She's a very cautious mom but she does let him, you know, explore things and venture off and he's walking around with a whole carrot in his mouth and having a great old time.
