00:00behind the wheel of a classic car here we go and a goal to scar britain for
00:05antiques the aim to make the biggest profit at
00:08auction but it's no mean feat there'll be worthy winners i can't stop smiling
00:14and valiant losers right i retire will it be the high road to glory
00:17oh look at that for the slow road to disaster oh oh dear this is antique road trip
00:26welcome we're out and about with our agile experts can you climb up the road yeah
00:40it's the third leg with a couple of auctioneers philip serrell and tamina gaffar
00:45we're in this mighty motor the 1959 ford popular so you want me to be parker and you want to be
00:52lady fenelope i mean it's not one oh no you don't use it
00:58what do you say
01:02f-a-b road trippers are go last time tamina was a clever talk well there's no one person who can
01:11make use of these and packed a punch i'll get him back in the ordinary while phil played shots if you
01:20want a pot roast this is the place for you and wowed with his olympic agility
01:30at auction tamina was sitting on a gold mine selling at 220
01:35with that snazzy mid-century chair
01:38making it one auction win each well you did well didn't you i know i surprised myself top job it's
01:47all to play for on this trip whoever wins the best of five is overall champ i don't want to say i hope
01:55so though i do hope so go tamina this tour kicked off in liverpool romped around yorkshire will run
02:04around the midlands and pop into oxfordshire before ending in cornwall what would be the holy
02:09grail if you walked into the shop oh i think i'd probably buy some indian silver what would you buy
02:16i'd buy a car oh typical i'd buy an after-loving dv4 gt zagato about eight million oh yeah back in the real
02:26world both have a replenished daily budget of 200 smackers and our rioters pair are in leicestershire
02:34concluding in the jolly town of wigston but we kick off in the village of north kilworth
02:41now this is where we're going on converted farmland we have albert's archive vintage and loved lovely
02:49what are you gonna buy today uh winners no point following me then she isn't
02:57it's certainly big enough for two in here the building was once used for sorting eggs you know
03:02let's see if our egg spurts oh dear will shell out on anything that's an earth of that thank you
03:11tamina's up first can't see different little hairdos it's for a night owl oh dinner with the parents
03:24very chic talking of stylish there's phil do you know he's such a silly ass there's some really
03:33interesting things in here so i'll keep banging on about social history right this is a cod's bottle
03:42that's a marble so back in the 19th century you buy your cod's bottle which you've probably got
03:48pop or lemonade in it and the marble was the stopper you then had to get a little pin
03:54normally wooden and you bash the top down and the marble drops into there so you've got your drink
04:00the but is that lots and lots and lots of these got broken in the 19th century so you can have a game
04:06marbles how cool is that you get a drink and you get a game all for the princely sum of five pounds
04:13which frankly probably all i think it's worth so that's not a goer for me but i love the story behind
04:19it me too now how about a filled joke tamila do you know what that is
04:27zebra that's a zebra crossing
04:29scarf buddies now dazzlers with your know-how starting with you tamina
04:41this is a purba there are ritualistic implements from the indo-tibetan buddhist tradition there was a
04:53lot of crossover between indian and southeast asian buddhism the borders weren't quite as rigid and
04:59defined as they are now so that's why a lot of the visual iconography seems quite similar this
05:05implement which is like a steak would be driven into the ground to drive out demons in some traditions
05:12it's driven into a basket full of rice so i think to have the same impact ceremonially without actually
05:20having to break ground with it that's a it's a lovely heavy thing it's priced 175 pounds but it's a
05:27really interesting object to kind of showcase how different cultural traditions could be shown in
05:35one object i think it's a little bit too modern and i'm not sure that i could have to get a profit on
05:41this at auction so not for me this time an incredible object i mean now now what's that fill up to
05:50see rather unfairly i think i have a reputation for buying big old rusting lumpy stuff and it might
06:03be time that i break the mold don't panic everyone but phil is looking at some dainty delights
06:11these things have normally got three little doofas that go on the end there's either a doofa for getting
06:17wax out your ear or there's a little pencil for marking your card or they're toothpicks so if we
06:25just slide this out here now i don't know about you but you're not going to do much writing with that
06:29are you and you wouldn't want that dodged in your ear would you so i think that's probably a
06:34toothpick the last tudor monarch queen elizabeth i had a proper penchant for a toothpick the more
06:42bejewelled the better it's priced up at 22 pounds i think that might be to look at that as well people
06:50like shoes don't they yes there's a little pewter pin cushion no great age to it at all really but i
06:57could put those two as one little lock couldn't i and this is going to dispel the myth that philip
07:03saril buys big lumpy rusting stuff if you say so philip that little shoe pin cushion is priced at 15.
07:13whilst he continues his perusal let's find tamina oh this is very cool i've never seen a tandem
07:21tricycle before perfect for you and phil it looks sort of like 50s 60s now it's got a metal
07:30wheel here and some plastic ones at the back i don't know if that's how it would have been
07:35intended these might be replacements and the seat's a bit worn but it looks like it's been enjoyed and
07:41loved that's really what you want with a bit of childhood play equipment tandem tricycles are great
07:48for little children but they were actually used back in the early 1900s to carry machine guns
07:55it's priced at 30 pounds now what can you buy for children for 30 pounds and to entertain two
08:02children as well i wonder if phil would like to give it a go with me uh might be a bit of a squeeze
08:10it seems to still move quite well i don't think i'm gonna fit on that bit but let's give it a go
08:17not the easiest is it i think i might just walk over yep i think that's best brace yourself dealer
08:25val here comes squeaky squeaky told you hi val hello i found something quite unexpected here actually
08:35this lovely tandem tricycle it is 30 pounds is there any movement on this for me i'm sure we can do
08:42something uh so if it's 30 pound i think 20. oh 20 would be perfect okay i think we're a chance with
08:49that it's 20 pounds for you thank you very much thank you so much thank you off i go val you are most
08:57kind that generous deal leaves tamina with 180 smackeroonies elsewhere i spot a mooching phil
09:07is he back on the big lumps again you have to ask yourself
09:13who in their right mind would want an old dairy milk tin in the house let me guess i would i think
09:20that's really nice it's kind of uh it's not really galvanized but it's polished tin and it's country
09:29dairy on there in the 19th century the milk churn was a popular feature in the british countryside
09:36because of the daily collection of milk by the roadside and it's really lovely because it's got
09:40the original top to it i've got price tag here that's 85 oh there's another price tag here that's 90
09:47pounds i like that i'm gonna have a word along with the big lump milk churn we also have the very
09:55dainty toothpick and shoe pin cushion right val you have another customer you have got some stuff in
10:02here haven't you we have well i've gone from the sublime to the gold blimey here okay so i quite like
10:07those two what's the very best you can do on those my dear 15 15 pounds yeah that's a deal it's a steal
10:15now what about the milk churn with the two price tickets eh 85 or 90. has it been here for some
10:22time yeah i think it's been from one place to another really and then the price is coming down
10:28they can come down they're going to need to come down a good bit further what's your best on that
10:32please i think it's got to be around 35 40 pound 35 is good enough for me can i do that yeah by my
10:38mass that's 50 quid isn't it that is correct there we go oh two-handed look there we go thank you very
10:44much okay i'll go and pick me churn up and i'm off okay thank you bye bye what a lovely lady eh that
10:50happy deal leaves phil with 150 pounds what on earth are you doing so many whip hop on your new what my
11:00ride my wheels on your bike i'll tell you what i'll stick to the classic things okay i'll follow you
11:06that was actually funny phil time for our buddies to part ways let's continue with tamina don't worry
11:14we didn't make her travel all the way by trike our gal has made it to the leicestershire town of
11:20loughborough home to the world's largest bell foundry which produced great paul for the iconic
11:27saint paul's cathedral we are going in this very fine emporium winged ape sounds like something out of the
11:35wizard of oz it's a family run biz established in 2016 with a lovely 180 pounds in her purse let's see
11:45what tickles termina's fancy okay how fitting a squirrel nutcracker that's a really nice form here
11:56now having different anthropomorphic forms like this were quite popular in the victorian era where they
12:04loved curio but also in the mid-century and a lot of the ones that we see today would have been from
12:10the mid-century that's 25 pounds these are very popular and collectible but whether it's unique
12:18enough to make a profit at auction at that price i'm not too sure yes i don't think the bidders would go
12:26nuts for it let's leave tamina to rootle and catch up with phil in a philosophical mood you just
12:34never ever know what you're going to come up against next it's a real voyage of discovery
12:39let's set sail then philip has made it to the leicestershire village of shenton another countryside
12:46gem for our phil in the guise of white moors antique center purveyors of antique fancies there is a
12:54gaggle of dealers selling all sorts in here he has the princely sum of 150 pounds
13:02so here's a little interesting thing isn't it now this says black forest and black forest really
13:08is a generic term that people use for almost any bit of late 19th early 20th century carved wood
13:14because actually this comes from a time when a household might have just had one watch
13:20a pocket watch and the man of the house would come home from work and this would sit on the
13:24mantelpiece and he would just open it up like that and he'd put his pocket watch in there and rest it
13:31on the mantelpiece and so you've converted your pocket watch into a little mantle plot that's a sweet
13:37little thing priced at 45 pounds there's not a profit adoption but what a lovely story very nice
13:46let's lollop back to loughborough
13:55i've never seen anything like these before they say gchq trade unions now the gchq the listening
14:03agency as in part of our secret service had a trade union that was banned quite famously in 1984
14:10and this was reversed in 1997 under a subsequent government but at the time gchq workers were
14:17dismissed if they were part of the trade union gchq was originally set up as a peacetime code breaking
14:26agency after the first world war the little animal stoneware money boxes were chosen for their appeal
14:32and produced during the 60s and 70s as a part of fundraising efforts now they're priced at 25 pounds
14:40each i'm not sure if that is an appropriate price because i've never seen some of these before but
14:46perhaps if they could be offered as a trio they'd be interesting enough as part of our like more modern
14:53political history to make that sort of money at auction luckily dealer andy is strategically placed
15:01hi hi i found these really interesting money boxes now they're 25 pounds each but i really want all
15:10three is there anything you can do for me buy two get the law free so that's 50 pounds for three
15:1650 for the three that's great thank you 50. thank you very much thank you so much excellent buy the trio
15:23of gchq trade union money boxes means tamina now has 130 pounds how about a nosy over in shenton
15:36you're up might never happen
15:39you have to bear in mind i'm looking for a profit all i've got to do is buy a profit
15:44and actually these might stand a chance look there's a couple of barrels here oh blimey so
15:49they're very much 20th century and one is six pounds and it hasn't got a cover and the other is
15:5510 pounds and it has got a cover well i think what's likely to happen with these is that someone
16:01they'll put a cork bung or a rubber bung in the top and they'll turn these into table lamps
16:07stoneware barrels like this one were popular in the 19th century for storing spirits and soft drinks
16:14like ginger beer they were commonplace in many a british tavern you know what they're quite fun
16:20things aren't they and at 10 pounds it's no money so for me it's more of a question of buying something
16:26that i can't lose too much on rather than i'm going to make a big profit on that's what i'm going to go
16:31for stand by patrick how are you all right all right fine it is yeah good weekend i quite like
16:37that little barrel yeah and it's 10 pounds i'm not even going to discuss the price with you that's it
16:42so there we are all right thank you very much indeed yeah take care now how are you you manage it
16:47all right cheers yeah good thank you bye-bye that was a swift one thank you patrick phil now has 140
16:54pounds the shopping is over for today our chumaroos are back in the big mighty automobile
17:02something not a good day haven't we we have you see this bed up here i'm going to drive you around it
17:10i think you've already done that nighty night
17:13morning has broken fancy a bit of history the only thing i remember about the industrial
17:24revolution was outright spinning jenny you remember that i wasn't there i don't know what i did
17:32crumbs now listen up phil has got some wise words you want to get ahead get a milk chair a milk chair
17:40a milk chair that's such a phil cell it is isn't it you see i can remember when the milk chair
17:46with the fences well yesterday tamina was all out quirky buying a tandem tricycle and a set of
17:55three stoneware money boxes leaving tamina with 130 pounds meanwhile phil was in spend mode scooping
18:07up a milk churn a toothpick and pincushion and a stoneware spirit barrel i think that's really nice
18:15phil has 140 pounds remaining now music is on our minds love rock and roll yeah
18:23ozzy osborne tony iomi jimmy page who'd be your rock legends rock legends beyoncee okay
18:33and it's the old side of rock legends girls run the world phil we shall catch up with tamina later
18:41for now let's bundle in with phil
18:45now we know phil loves a farm so he's stopping off at a local one in billsden leicestershire
18:53it's here that science and compassion intertwine to restore strength and vitality to our beloved
18:59horses phil's meeting with sally richards of active equine company dedicated to healing through the
19:06transformative power of hydrotherapy as phil makes some friends hello mate you are a lump aren't you
19:16let's take a moment to swirl back in time to explore the origins of veterinary care for these
19:22magnificent animals in the 18th century the horse reigned supreme vital for agriculture transport and
19:31military might proper care was established with the first vet school in 1761 in the mid-20th century
19:39charles strong the royal physician and leading physiotherapist turned his attention from people
19:45to horses and successfully treated a lame polo pony nowadays cutting-edge technology like hydrotherapy
19:54is used to aid recovery
19:58so i mean going back in there you have this almost like this romantic notion don't you of horses walking
20:02through streams i mean that's pretty a bit romantic but also there's a purpose behind it horses have
20:08always walked through through water and streams and the horses love water and yeah and the properties of
20:14water have been known for for years charles strong pioneered equine physiotherapy and paved the way
20:20for advanced procedures like this water treatment so this is milo and he's one of the rehab liveries
20:27he's torn the top of the tendon and because he wasn't kept moving on it it's all contracted
20:34you've got to get it back working totally water treadmills like this one were used from around the 1970s
20:40particularly for racehorses for injury recovery and post-exercise healing but it must be so rewarding
20:48to see a change in him that really you're you're the reason for it that he's getting so much better
20:54and this is very much his last chance the vets had wanted to euthanize him because he was in so much
20:59pain he was on the horse equivalent of ibuprofen every day which is not good for their stomachs and
21:06he couldn't go out in the field he couldn't walk comfortably so you've kind of saved him we've
21:12saved him and walking through the water has really helped him use his limb more normally right milo
21:19let's see this machine in action to help the horse acclimatize the sessions start from 12 minutes
21:25leading up to a full 25 minutes are you going to enjoy this matey and then i've got a job for you phil
21:33was this butterfly catching or something um well it's catching something what it comes out of the
21:38rear end you're joking really absolutely we don't want it going in the water you were made for this
21:46phil the treadmill similar to a running machine for humans can give a full body workout in this case
21:53the water helps reduce swelling for milo so when he came in here this was really painful for him
21:59really painful he was absolutely hopping he was on three legs his leg was really deformed and he
22:05couldn't stand on it and as human physiotherapy changes and all the rest of it so this must change
22:11absolutely when i trained as a human physio laser didn't exist now laser is the big bit of equipment
22:18laser stimulates the body's natural healing processes reducing pain and inflammation while accelerating tissue
22:26repair do you know i think one of the best feelings in the world is when you can take pain off an animal
22:34overall this technique can reduce recovery time from some injuries by as much as 50 to 60 percent
22:41he's lovely very nicely natured isn't he yes yes milo it looks like you are well on your way to a
22:48speedy recovery thanks to sally and her team i've really enjoyed this he's been good value as have you but
22:53i mean how can you not love animals hey from the cherished polo ponies of the royal household to
23:00present-day patients like milo sir charles strong led the way in equine welfare allowing dedicated
23:06individuals like sally to perform cutting-edge care for our noble steeds
23:11now let's giddy up and gallop off to tamina she's in the leicestershire town of lutterworth
23:22in the 1930s this was the town where sir frank whittle the inventor of the jet engine developed the
23:27groundbreaking technology we're going for a frolic in here lutterworth antiques
23:33it's piled high with antique plunder let the exploring begin
23:43tamina has 130 smackers
23:50this is a really elegantly shaped thing this is a lampshade made out of capis shell they were
23:56incredibly popular in the mid-century it's actually incredibly sustainable material because the mollusks
24:02were harvested for food and their shells were a by-product that were used in decor like this
24:09due to their fragile nature not many of them survive especially in relatively complete form
24:14like this capi's shells were used in the philippines in the 18th century for windows so they were also
24:21known as windowpane oysters given how popular mid-century design is now i think at 22 pounds
24:27that's not too much for a retro statement piece like this shell we move on let's find a film
24:38i haven't done a several i've kind of wandered off and seen what i can find so i think it might just be
24:45time for that i predict big rusty lumps will firmly be back on the menu he's exploring the countryside of
24:53stanton on the worlds our fan of all things rustic has wandered into a friendly farm with 140 smackers
25:03hello hi can i help you yeah yeah that's farmer phil by the way i just wonder if i'm on the off
25:10chance have you got anything you want to sell i've got all sorts of bits and pieces well leave the way
25:13off stuff as well yeah oh let's see what we find hey is that for sale it is really 1950 stutley bacon
25:211950 stutley bacon look at that wowie how cool is that somehow i think it's over budget go on how much
25:29is it 14 000. 14 000 anything else phil are those old old petrol tanks yeah yeah and are you selling
25:38those i am oh step this way you're welcome let's take a closer look hello doggy all right mate i think
25:47those two have been repainted possibly have i don't know the history of them which leaves me with this
25:51one here yeah look at the price of that three shillings for two gallons that's what's that that's
25:57one and sixpence a gallon top marksville this is a pratt's petrol can back in the early 20th century
26:04before petrol stations motorists would use this to collect their fuel what would you do one of
26:10those for well one in 30 first pair if you only want the one that 15 will do you sure yeah go on
26:15you've got to make profit that's good i'll just have a look because a lot of dodgy tenors and fivers
26:19are in the area at the minute quite right farmer phil i'm pleased with that phil thank you
26:25good luck with your car i hope you sell it yeah okay see you soon cheers now and thank you okay bye
26:31revelling in rustic paradise has come up trumps for phil he now has 125 pounds
26:40right let's leg it to lutterworth oh going anywhere nice on your holidays
26:49she's very thorough oh cool what's this it says the magic hair waver this looks really interesting
26:58before electrical hair styling devices like we use now women would heat this long steel implement
27:07here on a hot stove and then put them into these different shaped implements where the hair would
27:13be wrapped around to create undulating waves so it says here it's 1903 edwardian ladies would sport
27:20the luminous updos or soft flowing waves this would have been a luxury for the affluent girl about town
27:29i've never seen one of these before it comes in its original box which i mean for something this
27:36old seems like it's in relatively good condition now it's priced at 85 pounds i don't know if there's
27:48much room there for me to make a profit at auction but it is such a quirky piece of social history indeed
27:56and maybe a main attraction at the auction where's our phil he's got a lovely head of hair look
28:04appropriately the cyril has arrived in the town of wigston in leicester close to the final resting
28:11place of the last plantagenet king of england richard iii and here comes our regal road tripper philip
28:19look at that now i can tell you that's a mercedes-benz roadster or drophead coupe and if that
28:26is a proper grown-up 300 sl roadster i'm thinking it's worth between 1.5 million and 3 million pounds
28:38now both of those are a bit beyond my budget but at 85 pounds you know that's not very dear the only
28:46trouble is it looks like it's been driven by a hooligan look at the sides on that tamina would love
28:52that right let's get inside unit 23 it's stacked full of treasures in here look at that i mean why
29:02on earth would you call your house baked potatoes you're a real spug phil our man has 125 pounds to
29:10spend here's an old favorite look now napkin or serviette ring i'm still not sure but it's one or
29:18the other essentially they mean the same thing a delicate square of fabric to wipe one's mouth
29:24while dining although nancy mitford said we should call it a napkin as you were this is instantly
29:31recognizable it's by a man called robert thompson of kilburn and when robert thompson started work
29:37he wanted to put his own kind of signature on the pieces that he created and he did that by
29:42putting this little mouse on everything that he made because he was as poor as a church mouse
29:47robert mouse man thompson was a key figure of the arts and crafts movement inspired by 17th century
29:54artisans a lot of the pieces have been created using a medieval cutting tool you can tell this is
30:01genuine by the caliber of the oak here it's really nicely grained the mouse is just beautifully carved and
30:07i love the way his tail just hangs down here look this stuff is really really really on fire at the
30:12minute auction wise you can buy mausman tables mausman chairs for thousands of pounds i just love his
30:18work because it's so simple there's no price on this which that's a definite for me lovely let's scamper to
30:26look at this this looks like early disinfectant bottle oh god it's the far cry from the disposable
30:43plastic bottles that we all use now this has a sort of handle sprayer element it's made of glass
30:50presumably because it would be refilled and this here would be pressed in to spray it says it's by
30:58a company called chromosome which is a glasgow based company and all of these elements would be
31:05replaceable now how fitting is that for our more increasingly sustainable age established in 1912
31:13chromosome became known for the manufacture of hygiene products the early 20th century saw a
31:19sanitation revolution and initially this humble bottle of disinfectant was a luxury item good
31:25hygiene practices was something that the educated middle classes wanted to demonstrate especially
31:31to their guests when they were visiting their homes this bottle would have been positioned so that their
31:37guests would know that they had purchased this expensive item does it have a price it says it's 25
31:43pounds i think that's sort of the top end of where i would expect it to be at auction but it does come
31:50with its original box and these apothecary style bottles are sought after right so we also have the
31:58hair waver at 85 and the lamp for 22 so brace yourself tilly hi tilly hi all right good i found three
32:06three things here oh lovely let's start with the lamp is there anything you can do on price for me
32:13um i could do it for 10 okay that's brilliant okay and the hair waver we could do 75 okay and the
32:22disinfectant bottle we could do that 20 okay so that's 20 75 and 10 it's 105 105 there you go thank you very
