00:00Ahead of the first elections since her ouster, Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal
00:06has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death after convicting her of crimes against humanity.
00:15The former Prime Minister, one of the world's longest-serving leaders, having held power for more than 15 years,
00:22was tried in absentia on charges of ordering a brutal crackdown on a student-led uprising in mid-2024,
00:32an assault that left around 1,400 people dead.
00:36Prosecutors also allege that she oversaw forced disappearances
00:40and the torture of opposition activists in secret detention centres run by security agencies.
00:46But Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India, rejects all accusations,
00:52describing the verdict as biased and politically motivated.
