The lion is a large, powerful cat known as the "king of beasts". They are unique among felines as the most social, living in groups called prides. Male lions are recognizable by their prominent manes, while females (lionesses) are the pride's primary hunters. Lions live mainly in the grasslands of Africa and a small population in India's Gir Forest.
