00:00Hi, everybody. I'm Brittany Lewis, a reporter here at Forbes. Joining me now is my colleague,
00:08Forbes senior editor, Chase Peterson-Withhorn. Chase, thanks so much for joining me.
00:13Yeah, thanks for having me.
00:15You were reporting that Kim Kardashian, who is already a billionaire, is now richer than ever.
00:20So to start off the conversation, how rich is she now and how is she getting even richer?
00:25Yeah, so she is worth $1.9 billion. The main source of her wealth is shapewear company Skims,
00:34and Skims just announced that it raised $225 million at a $5 billion valuation. So it's a
00:40$5 billion brand, and that translated to a $200 million day for Kim, who owns about a third of
00:46the company. So with that new investment round, she's richer than she's ever been.
00:51It's a good day to be Kim Kardashian, it seems, based on those numbers. But some of us,
00:57myself included, have been keeping up with the Kardashians for close to two decades now.
01:02So how much can she attribute her wealth to Skims versus her other business ventures like reality TV?
01:10Yeah. So she's basically, of course, always has been wealthy. Grew up wealthy, made a lot of money
01:17on the TV shows, had a lot of business ventures before Skims, still has a bunch of other business
01:22ventures. But the Kardashians and Jenners have tried all sorts of stuff. They've been trying to break
01:27into Skim care for a long time and do all sorts of stuff. So this is definitely the family's biggest
01:33hit. And it's definitely Kim's, the vast majority of her net worth is definitely going to be in Skims.
01:40So like I said, she owns around a third of the company. And I mean, it's the vast, vast majority of
01:45her wealth. I mean, let's talk about that a little more because the family, Kim included,
01:50has had their hand in a host of different businesses. Aside from reality TV, she worked
01:56on a mobile game, fragrance line, beauty line, amongst other things. But Skims is the one that
02:01really seems to have taken off into a league of its own. So can you run us through the history of
02:06the company and any highlights that you found interesting? You know, she co-founded this company
02:10in 2018 with a couple entrepreneurs, Emma Greed and this guy Jens Greed, who is the CEO now.
02:16And they really found an interesting, you know, niche, which is, you know, shapewear sort of with
02:22Kim's vibe, you know, and Kim's aesthetic. And, and so, you know, over the years, it's sort of been
02:27just this slow building, but sort of runaway success. It's definitely the most successful
02:33business of the Kardashian-Jenner family. And, you know, as she's sort of had to figure out,
02:41you know, she's had a couple of beauty businesses. She had KKW Beauty. She shut that down,
02:44turned that into Skin by Kim's, shut that down. She's sort of reformulated stuff a bunch of times
02:49and try to figure out what's right. And all while doing that, Skims has kind of just continued to be,
02:55you know, a success. And so they've been raising more and more money and at higher valuations.
02:59And to your point, you made earlier that this is Kim's vibe. I mean, it really seems
03:04like it is. It has a really cool vibe. There's smart partnerships, like with the Olympics,
03:09in their marketing campaigns. Those are also very strategic. They pick celebrities or athletes
03:14or pop stars that really meet the moment at exactly that moment. It seems to have paid off
03:19for them, obviously, now that the company is valued at $5 billion. Has Kim said exactly what she
03:25envisions the future of the company to be fresh off this really successful fundraising round?
03:31Yeah, you know, it's really interesting because they started out as a direct-to-consumer,
03:35you know, online-only brand. And then they've sort of moved into brick-and-mortar retail,
03:41you know, in building physical stores. And they've got 18 of them around the U.S.,
03:45a couple more in Mexico. And not just, you know, I mean, they build a big flagship in New York City,
03:51but, you know, they're, I think, in Minnesota, you know, all throughout the United States. And
03:55they're using this money that they raised to build even more brick-and-mortar stores. And so,
04:00at a time where, you know, all this talk for a long time now, you know, companies going online
04:05and getting rid of their stores, you know, they have this vision for, you know, doing a lot more
04:10brick-and-mortar. And so, they said that within a few years, they're hoping that it's predominantly
04:14a physical retail brand, which is pretty interesting.
04:16Multiple of the Kardashian and Jenners have made their way into the beauty sector. They're not
04:23new to this. But Skims is. And based on your reporting, it looks like they're expanding into
04:27this space. How so?
04:29Yeah, you know, there's a lot of celebrity interest in beauty brands. And it's interesting to see how
04:38much the Kardashian and Jenners have, you know, dabbled in it. And it's interesting to see how many
04:43of them are, you know, how many of these businesses have become successful and they've waxed and
04:49they've waned. And you can see it with Kylie Cosmetics, you know, that company that did very well from the
04:53beginning, sort of struggled, you know, and it's, you know, tried to build back. I think that, you know,
04:59you can see that Skims is moving. Skims, you know, acquired skin by Kim, you know, recently. And so,
05:05they're sort of moving into more skin care. And then you can see with, you know, some of the more recent
05:11drops that they're, you know, they're, they're definitely trying to expand beyond, you know, just
05:17shapewear and definitely into beauty, definitely into cosmetics. And then of course, also, they have
05:22this partnership with Nike, you know, where they're doing hoodies and they're doing dresses and all
05:26sort of like, you know, athletic wear for men and women.
05:29I think when you're looking at brands that are backed by celebrities, it's interesting to see just how
05:35involved the celebrity is, whether it's them just slapping their face and name on a product versus to
05:41someone being really involved into the day-to-day. Kim Kardashian's a co-founder and the chief creative
05:46officer of Skims. How hands-on is she? Yeah, I mean, you know, she calls it her day job. And I think
05:52that's probably true. You know, she talks about how she's super involved in, you know, all of the
05:56product, all of the design, and then also all of the marketing, which, you know, makes sense if you
06:01have a company, you know, where Kim Kardashian is involved. I think you probably want her in charge
06:07of chart for the marketing. Well, Chase, I appreciate the reporting. Thanks so much for
06:11joining me. Yeah, thanks for having me.
