00:00The city never sleeps, but it sure does get quiet, to quiet, to kind of quiet that means trouble is brewing, like a saucer of milk left out too long. My name is Mittens. To the boys in blue, I'm just another stray. But in these rain-slicked streets, I'm the only one who can sniff out the real rats.
00:18It was a Tuesday. It's the kind of Tuesday that feels like a Monday's leftover dinner. The dame walked into my office, with my favorite cardboard box behind Sal's Deli, a Persian, pristine white fur, eyes like emeralds. She was scared. Her prize ball of yarn, a rare Peruvian pima cotton, was gone. Snatched right from her windowsill. Cops. They laughed it off. Just a ball of yarn, they said. I knew better.
00:45In this concrete jungle, a stolen toy can be the first thread you pull to unravel a much bigger conspiracy. I took the case. The scent was faint, a mix of cheap catnip and desperation. Led me down alleyways where shadows danced like phantoms and whispers hung in the air like dust motes.
01:02My first lead was a tomcat named Frankie the claw, a tough character who ran the tuna racket down by the docks. He claimed he knew nothing, but his paws twitched when I mentioned the yarn. He was lying, little persuasion, a well-placed hiss, and a flick of my tail and he sang like a canary. He'd seen a shady character, a Siamese with shifty eyes, heading towards the old cannery.
01:25The cannery was a graveyard of forgotten fish, the air thick with the ghosts of sardines past. I moved like a shadow, my senses on high alert. And there he was, the Siamese, tangled in a web of the stolen yarn.
01:39It wasn't just a simple theft. He was using the yarn to map out a heist on the biggest fish market in town. He lunged, claws out, but I'm quicker. I've had more scraps than he's had hot meals. We tumbled and rolled a flurry of fur and fury under the pale moonlight. In the end, it wasn't my claws that one, but my wits. A loose floorboard, a kick at the right moment, and he was trapped. The yarn and the city's fish supply were safe.
02:07As the sun came up, I returned the yarn to the Persian. She offered me a lifetime supply of cream. I turned it down. My reward is the quiet satisfaction of justice served. Another case closed. In this city of a million stories, this cat is always on the prowl for the next one.
