00:00The supply of hardwood harvested from the stunning forests of northern New South Wales
00:08has just been cut by 40 percent.
00:12In September, the state government announced a Great Koala National Park will be established
00:17to protect both koalas and the forests.
00:21176,000 hectares of state forest will be transferred to the National Park Register.
00:29It meant an immediate moratorium on logging in the park's proposed boundaries.
00:34Hundreds of jobs in six mills and harvesting operations will be affected, prompting local
00:40timber workers to protest.
00:43A support package will keep mills operating until the end of the year to clear backlogs
00:52and fill final orders.
00:54More redundancies are expected after that.
00:59Mark Jackson sees another future where forestry still has a role.
01:05He's been replanting forests for decades.
01:07We're looking at repairing the environment and regenerating the environment and creating
01:12a wealth of forest resources so that there's enough for endangered critters, there's enough
01:17for the timber industry to grow and there's enough that we're putting the fabric of Australia's
01:22ecology back together.
01:24That's where we need to get to and the beautiful thing is that we've now pretty much got to
01:28the point where we've got the resources, the tools, the knowledge.
01:32Mark sees opportunities for forestry in the nation's environmental markets for carbon
01:37and biodiversity.
01:39Mark Jackson believes these financial incentives can encourage the growth of more forests in
01:45Australia for environmental and industry uses and drive demand for new jobs.
01:51Mark Jackson means that given that most of the carbon market is currently investing in
01:58nature repair type activities, that we'll have unparalleled levels of resources going into
02:04reforestation projects.
02:06What we still need to do though is make sure that we're getting the right forest in the right
02:10place for the right reason.
02:15So I would like to take that very Mauricio to Arrug家 the water system, which is also a
02:24Western section where people can't imagine how important the land that are put onto the
02:29ground, where we're following the theme of resources.
02:30We hope that only takes down the leaves forWhich so that we can throw a dead spot, what we can
02:31bring.
02:32If you don't have no idea of esseza to open our up – come to see that embarrasses management
02:34or the land in the right place.
