00:36What you're gonna do, you're gonna drop off your recruiter's folder in that red crate,
00:41and you're gonna take that piece of paper that you have, and you're gonna hand it to the recruit.
00:44Does that make sense?
00:45Yes, sir!
00:46Then you're gonna load on my bus from the very back to the front.

01:34There's nothing really down there for me, just besides the plant life,
01:37and I didn't want to be stuck in the plants for my whole life.

06:34what do you think when you see these planes going by sometimes i think uh think about
06:39just graduating so i get on a plane and go home see my family sir
06:49you just got to try you just got to bust your butt are you going to be in 69 days
06:53we typically have between six to eight
07:23failures and i want to say that that rang true this morning between six to eight failures
07:30i had my doubts in the beginning for myself but i actually did better than i thought
07:34how's it going good i'm really tired i passed the whole thing so i'm really um excited to
07:41continue with my training i almost cried earlier because i'm very excited it felt relieving and it
07:46felt um like i wasn't letting anyone down
07:49so what we're going to do now is we're going to shower them up get them changed over into their
07:55uniforms and then we're going to do what's called a warm handoff we'll introduce them to their
07:59actual drill instructor team in echo company and we we lovingly refer to it as black friday
08:04what is black friday there's no such thing as black friday black friday is is just what somebody
08:16made up that we call that that's a pickup where the recruits are introduced to their uh to their
08:20permanent drill instructor
08:37hurry up you're on this side behind this corner because you're standing
08:50you're on this side behind this side behind this side behind this side behind this side
08:54and look at me our mission is to join each one of you to become a united states marine we will give
09:02every effort to train you even after some of you have given up on yourselves never quit or give up for we
09:09offer you the challenge of recruit training the opportunity to retire the united states marine
09:20united states five five three two one there is a level of stress that's provided that kind of welcomes
09:29them to the to the institution but there's there's nothing wrong with that when i say instruct you
09:35are going to scream explode do you understand a healthy level of stress to show them that that there
09:42are going to be stressful times that there are going to be stressful moments we're also trying to shake
09:47some of those civilian bad habits out of them by introducing them to the way that we do things
10:06i was wake up
10:11oh man would you say that they've in three weeks changed from what they looked like when they were
10:26first picked up yes it's a complete 180 from where we first got them you get a lot of timid recruits
10:33recruits that aren't very confident with themselves you kind of have to see that and work with that and
10:38get them to where they need to be they don't have their iphones they don't have their computers anymore
10:43the recruits definitely miss it and you can see it because with the generation that we have now
10:46they're so used to you know just picking up their phone looking at it they won't realize it until we
10:50kind of bring it up but hey like you've gone a month and a half without your without your phone
10:53without your computer without any outside media source and you're still a human being
10:59a lot of these recruits that come here they come from broken homes families without strong male role
11:04models i myself you know growing up from a home without a father i've received numerous uh
11:09letters from my recruits saying that they see me as a father see me as a second father
11:13so that in itself it means a lot
11:26so the recruits they're supposed to be watching the senior drone structure's house
11:30they weren't cleaning so at this time they got they got it which is discipline to fix infractions
11:36stuff that they're not doing right
11:39what does it stand for it's structural training sir
11:44so it lasts for generally um three minutes 30 second rest and then three minutes back again
11:49it's something that they don't enjoy sir you wouldn't get your discipline if they did enjoy it
12:02however it is beneficial because as soon as they get it one person starts telling the other recruits
12:08and then they kind of start police calling each other so it's honestly beneficial
12:33that's just the the motto for our company so fox company fatal company i mean it's just
12:56just always keep it fatal that's our motto that's something that we breed into the recruits and that's
13:01something that we're especially proud of as fox company drill instructors fatal company drill
13:06instructors today we're on confidence course two which comprises of the lower obstacles as well as
13:14the high obstacles the goal through first phase is to kind of break them down second phase and we
13:19build them back up that's the point of this course right here to build their confidence
13:24stairway to heaven not my personal favorite it's just challenging because it's so high up and the
13:29higher you get the more spaced out the logs are that you have to navigate over do you ever find
13:34like that any recruits are afraid of heights yes and you don't know until we're out here navigating
13:39these obstacles if they're up high on the stairway to heaven they have no choice to give up and that's
13:43what makes them confident in overcoming their fears is that there's no other way to get off the
13:48obstacle other than to complete it slide for life is another obstacle that's higher up than the
13:57others to build their confidence get them to do something that they would have probably never
14:04have done if it weren't for coming here battle of world war ii sir front of canal iwo jima tarawan
14:22midway okinawa who was the first female marine first female in the brink for ice sir all of the
14:27men johnson 1918 do we all know about the battle of iwo jima yes sir who died on iwo jima john bass
14:33john bass was awarded a medal of honor in a whole nother freaking a whole nother battle
14:40and then died on iwo jima got it that man was a legend do you understand yes sir
14:54what's good of you screaming i assure i assure all you get over here now
14:59right now we currently have 37 females on our platoon which is probably the smallest
15:09platoon i've ever seen come through san diego female wise here the females actually are with the
15:15males since day one all the way through they obviously can't talk to each other they don't
15:20live in the same squad base or anything but they do pts with each other practice all that stuff with
15:24each they go to the classrooms together so there is interaction but they they can't talk i didn't
15:30know that the male and female recruits could not talk to each other no is that for a reason um i i
15:35don't know if it's for a reason but i believe that it does help because then the recruits are actually
15:40focused on what they actually came here to do a recruit should never be having a good time
15:44they should not be talking talking about what they had for lunch or nothing they're just strictly
15:48business for 13 weeks if you talk if you look around i will fail you do understand yes sir
16:01big map is marine corps martial arts program it's the program that we have in the marine
16:05corps for actually teaching fighting from different martial arts as boxing jiu-jitsu judo muay thai and
16:11we teach it so the marines and recruits can be more deadly in the fleet uppercut uppercut
16:17execute execute execute execute execute the technique
16:27we were telling them to take a knee because they were doing a fundamental or a principle of
16:31the technique wrong number three third squad technique they can miss up to 10 techniques and
16:36still pass the test but if we did have a recruit fail the test they would give a 24-hour
16:41period that they would retest tomorrow and they would come to us we would re-evaluate them
16:48i would like to think that most recruits do like it because it's a way for them to learn to control
16:52their anger and through inoculation to interpersonal violence and actually be able to let some of that
16:56out from the frustrations of recruit training
17:09so currently we're on grass week with the recruits what they do for the purpose of this week is get
17:25them into the positions to better prepare them to actually shoot the rifle what they use at recruit
17:29training is a m16a4 you have to learn the basics learn the fundamentals before we can actually give
17:35rounds it's that baseline before we get to push on to the next evolution of training which will be
17:41shooting the actual rifle this is going to work got it yes sir you all have a double feed fix it
17:48all right is that how you correct the double feed no sir show me how you correct the double feed
18:04this recruit cannot correctly remember okay no plea breaks all right we're good hold your breath for
18:24about three seconds let it out do that three times you're freaking out you don't need to freak out about it
18:30yes sir every marine is a rifleman you never know who's going to go to combat and who's going to
18:47actually need to use their rifle so we need to make sure that every marine is confident in their abilities
18:53to shoot we have four stations so they'll be in the kneeling supported on the window hit they'll lay
19:02down in the prone on the rooftop they'll move to the bunker after the bunker they move to another prone
19:09position you never know like what positions you'll have to shoot in and what kind of cover you'll have
19:16i'm touching your mag pouches to field for live rounds aye sir go get cleared out by your officer
19:24when he observed wounded marines trapped in the enemy line of fire corporal kane immediately
19:28positioned himself to provide covering fire for the marines attempting to pull the wounded to safety
19:32all were remaining dangerously exposed to the enemy's impact zone he repeatedly thwarted in
19:37in search and attempts to fire their machine guns down the stairs at the front of marines
19:40with accurate and deadly fire from the squad automatic weapon as the last of the wounded were being
19:45evacuated portions of the building fell on top of him crushing his leg his heroic actions and
19:49selfish emotions of duty inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in the evacuation of
19:54marines needing urgent medical care and the destruction of the enemy's stronghold a toast to corporal k
19:59a toast to corporal k trigger the core out on third amendment i have always wanted to be a marine
20:08since i was very young my stepdad was a marine and he's taught me basically most of everything that i
20:16know has this been hard yes sir very hard why mostly the mental aspect for me just being away from home
20:24i've been away from home for you know a couple weeks at a time but it was with other family it was
20:29never by myself being away from home for 13 weeks it's it's kind of hard especially when the week i left was
20:35my niece's birthday it was her first birthday and i had to leave the day before and so that kind of
20:41really made me hurt for the first couple weeks weaver weaver weaver that's not what you're supposed
20:45to do you were told you're not responding weaver respond okay now you're not responding to me
20:50i am so fix it i am do something delegate do something i am kodakowski yes fix the path
20:57the reason we were doing that is just to let everybody prove that they can be a leader
21:02at some point and take charge weaver the jewel instructors were correcting us on everything
21:07we're missing you know we weren't moving fast enough what are you gonna do i enjoyed it because
21:12it it did give me that sense of oh hey i'm actually leading and they're actually helping me lead
21:17in their own way two columns this is not two they're not responding to you all right sir respond
21:27they've done all this before they're capable of doing it now you're doing it when you're a little
21:31more tired with a little less sleep and at first it sucks what we like to call is you embrace the
21:39stuff together and that's what makes marines marines
21:42everything in the crucible whatever event you may not be able to finish there's a consequence so if
22:12they're not able to execute the weaver they go out to the side and we do something that's called
22:16fireman's carry it's where you take a buddy and you put them over your shoulders and then you carry
22:22them from one point to another go war back go war back
22:27signaler the report good morning sir stick to total strength 20 total present 18 total weapons 20 total
22:37bfa's 20 total iron sights 20. what are we training for water we're training for free combat right but you want to move slow and you want to whisper and you want to be weak
22:48sir what is over there nothing look at me i'm talking to you stop being weak
22:57no one cares the enemy does not care wake up no get up you're not doing anything for him
23:06where did the zipper go middle man so if you already know why don't you do it on yourself because one of these
23:11zippers i don't care stop being complacent i'm him it's the little things that add up
23:21all right man just put it away go grab the canteen top and go over there all right sir now get out of my face
23:26yes sir hey who's thanks you're back bring us up grab the let's go go
23:32all right let's go make a decision
23:39some of you are going to realize maybe you'll get out and you won't even go to college even though you
23:43joined for college in the first place right all right sir some of you are going to join for college
23:48and realize you want to stay in like even then there's not a bad reason to join the military
23:52right you're serving your country you're doing your family and your friends proud as well right
23:57yes and yourself as well you understand yes sir there's more to it than just joining for college
24:03right yes as you join you could join any branch and get free college right you join like the reserve
24:09freaking coast guard you're just swimming up in one day right but you chose to freaking
24:13join the marine corps specifically because it's the most difficult branch right yes you have that
24:17reason like you want to go to college but also you joined to be a freaking marine all right
24:22you could have gotten that college with any other branch all right you have those two reasons right
24:26yes sir why you wanted to join the military and why you want to be a foreign all right you gotta
24:30remember both those make sense yes sir after we get out of here we're going to do a triple six
24:34that make sense you get some beef with somebody or you know what i'm saying like there's your chance
24:41you understand yes sir hey 10 10 11 grab your canteen make back gloves mouthpiece have it out right now
24:54so before i came here i never done hand-to-hand combat at all and it really worried me at first
25:00but i feel that i am confident enough to at least be able to defend myself and someone else that i care for
25:06you died you're the killer understand i'm sure you go to the pit oh i'm sorry 23 24 7 4
25:20do you want to go back over there yeah you do
25:24what the hell you don't get a pick where you want to go okay now yeah yeah definitely back at zero
25:30all right let's go pick it up now let's go baby one all right sir all right sir all right sir all right
25:47they're just changing out their socks to a dry pair of socks just to take care of their feet keep
25:51their feet dry need some uh antibiotics going here right now they're probably feeling a little bit of
25:56pain some hot spots and stuff like that but it's nothing that that's going to kill them let's go
26:01same thing i have to jump you have to try jump try first let him try you have to try
26:09look at how many recruits it takes to get you over how embarrassing pick up your own weight
26:19it's crazy how they helped you but you just walk away when they help you
26:22i'm in selfish individual i'm in some of them just don't really like to try as hard as others
26:30it frustrates me as a marine seeing how much we how much hard work we put into them understand they
26:37come from different backgrounds and they were raised different so we just try to help them
26:42understand our culture here let's go i'm in stop taking your sweet time don't let slip don't let
26:49go i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't no left fall you're gonna fall you're gonna fall
26:55you always get the easy way out let's go all right sir go some of the recruits they point in the
27:01crucible they're very tired the lack of sleep and the lack of calories getting into their body is
27:05really getting to them so they're trying to fall behind so when those recruits start to fall behind
27:10the rest of the platoon brings them up and encourages them to continue on let's go
27:15do you need help back here by the road hell no hell no me need help
27:24all right let's go
27:40oh
27:51oh
28:03oh
28:03Get up, get up!
28:17Let's go!
28:20Let's go!
28:33Let's go!
29:03How are you doing, Weaver?
29:05Good, sir.
29:07Really good, sir.
29:08How are you feeling now?
