No, Portugal is not banning all Islamic practices.
00:07
Viral claims on social media
00:09
allege that Portugal is banning all Islamic laws and practices
00:13
and that failing to comply will result in a €4,000 fine.
00:17
This post on X has been seen more than 800,000 times
00:21
and has been shared and liked thousands of times too
00:24
and alleges that more and more EU countries will follow suit.
00:27
It attaches a video which also makes the same claims,
00:30
noting that France, Italy, Sweden, Austria and Belgium
00:34
are also going to implement the same measures.
00:37
However, the claim that Portugal and other countries
00:39
are banning all Islamic practices is wrong
00:42
and appears to be an exaggeration of a recent bill
00:45
to ban the wearing of face veils in public places.
00:48
In mid-October, the Portuguese parliament approved a bill
00:51
banning face veils worn for gender or religious reasons in public
00:55
in a move seen as targeting the face coverings worn by some Muslim women.
00:59
It was proposed by the far-right Jäger party
01:02
and received support from the ruling centre-right PSD,
01:05
the Liberal Initiative and the centre-right CDSPP.
01:08
Anyone flouting the new law could face fines of between €200 and €4,000
01:14
depending on the severity of the case.
01:16
So the online claims clearly have some parallels to the face veils ban,
01:20
but they've exaggerated and misconstrued the truth.
01:23
The law will now be debated in a parliamentary committee
01:26
where it may be amended before returning to the plenary for a final vote.
01:31
President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza still needs to approve the law,
01:35
otherwise he could veto it or send it to the constitutional court for review.
01:39
Once fully approved, Portugal will join the likes of Austria, France, Belgium, Denmark and others
01:45
in the group of European countries which have banned the burqa.
01:49
But again, this doesn't mean that these countries have banned the practice of Islam.
