It is said that a Mongolian learns to ride a horse before learning to walk. This national sport is celebrated during Naadam, the country’s national festival, which features horse racing, archery competitions, and wrestling matches. From the vast deserted steppes to Ulaanbaatar, the entire country becomes an arena.

00:00Thank you for listening.
06:17But it's the guard.
06:34Wrestling is the main event.
06:36More than just a simple game, it's an art, a veritable institution, just as sumo is in Japan.
06:47Oddly enough, there are no weight, age or rank categories.
06:52All participants are mixed together and take part in the tournament equally.
06:57A child, for example, might end up in competition with an adult.
07:02Wrestling has been practiced since the beginning of time.
07:19The rules are simple.
07:21The participant, who brings his opponent to the ground first, wins and will go on to the next round.
07:27Nine rounds are held over the three days of competition.
07:42Wrestlers who win five rounds in a row are awarded the title of Falcon.
07:47A wrestler who wins six rounds becomes an elephant.
07:50The winner of the whole competition is changed into a lion.
07:54If a lion wins again the following year, he becomes a giant.
07:58A giant who wins a third time becomes a national giant.
08:01And if the national giant is strong enough to win four times in a row,
08:05he is declared invincible, naturally.
08:08You're making a true country and that's why he fights a guy.
08:09You're not in a row.
08:10Who wins a guy and that's why he's in one place?
08:11You're not in one place, I don't know him.
08:12You're not in one place, you're not in one place.
08:13But you're not in the right place.
08:14You're in one place.
08:15What is this?
08:16You're not in one place?
08:17This is the one place where he is located in the place.
08:18Now, you're in one place.
08:19The people who win five and eight.
08:21How are you picking up, in one place and eight.
08:22You're not getting a great place?
08:24You're pretty.
08:25You're your own.
08:26You're going to an incredible lifetime,
08:27you're gonna go.
08:28You're all going to be different.
08:29You're going to the right.
08:32Oh
09:02I don't know.
09:32All right, let's go.
10:02These guys are big.
10:04They're not like my dad.
10:06They're the only one.
10:08They're the only one.
10:10They're the only one.
10:12I don't like them.
10:14I don't like them.
10:16I don't think I could have any help.
10:18It's not that easy.
10:20I can't wait.
10:22We're at the table.
10:24I'm sorry.
10:26I don't like them.
10:28I'm so sorry.
10:30This is almost a pretty good thing.
10:34Oh, it's a good thing.
10:35It's a good thing.
10:36Camera.
10:37Keep it.
10:38Okay.
11:30This is a test.
11:33This is a test.
11:36I'd like to see you in the next video.
11:40This is a test...
11:44This is a test.
11:50This test.
13:26But that's not the biggest climatic problem.
13:30You have to be very careful of sudden changes in the weather, whatever the season.
13:36Within an hour, a very sunny day may turn into a huge sandstorm.
13:40These violent winds that blow all year long, especially in springtime, are major characteristics
13:49of the Mongolian climate.
13:53Especially the Karaburan, or the Black Blizzard, a wind from the Gobi Desert that can bring
13:58about near darkness.
14:00By the end of the race, the young riders will have ridden several dozen kilometers.
14:16As soon as the first jockey crosses the finishing line, mounted referees gallop after the riders
14:22to give them wooden tablets that indicate their order of arrival.
14:25The winner receives the title of best rider, his father that of best breeder, and the horse
14:39itself is proclaimed horse of the year.
14:41The first five runners-up are decorated with a medal.
14:47The last horse of the race is brought before the spectators, who console it and encourage
14:51it by chanting its name to do better at the next Nadam.
14:54Contrary to what one might imagine, it's quite rare for a rider to fall in the competition.
15:05These young riders are the pride of their families.
15:24These young riders are the pride of their families, who are the pride of their families, who are
15:54The larger the town, the larger the Nadam.
16:16As with all national festivals throughout the world, the Nadam parade is colourful and
16:20is made up of all levels of Mongol society, both civil and military.
16:29Patriotic songs are sung and children dance to choreographies specially prepared for the
16:33event.
16:38It must be understood that apart from the purely sporting side of the event, in country villages
16:43the Nadam is also an opportunity for important social gatherings.
16:48It always arouses great enthusiasm with Mongols.
17:18I think St and Ananda is a fun movement, obviously with the company people with the
17:26cultura and competitiveness.
17:31How about the camp?
17:33I didn't have an ability to see Blogger gto brooch.
17:38Not just tell the name of the Villa, but you are те, they write the album here.
17:42Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
18:12It's my pleasure to be with you.

20:06Archery is one of the three most important events of the Nadam.
20:24It's a tradition going back to Genghis Khan, who introduced it to help him select the most
20:31skillful archers.
20:32Participants use wooden bows with strings made from animal tendons.
20:41The arrows are made from branches and bird feathers.
20:49The men stand 75 meters away from the target and shoot 40 arrows in all.
20:55Judges stand to either side of the target.
20:59They intone a song called the ukai in crescendo so as to encourage the archer.
21:06They raise their hands skyward to announce the result of the shots.
21:13The archery event has been open to women for the last few decades.
21:18Women stand only 60 meters from the target and shoot 20 arrows.
21:22The archery event has been blown away from爾 and Yun kinda with the next few months.
21:31For example, theison will be the strongest.
21:36The archery event is strong and effective.
21:42The archery event is important as the interior of the archery event.
22:18Other events take place during Nadam, like here, a knuckle-bones competition.
22:48Other events take place during Nadam, like here, and the other events take place during Nadam, like here.

23:11Other events take place during Nadam, like here, and the other events take place during Nadam.
23:23And the other events take place during Nadam, like here, and the other events take place during Nadam.
23:42Shortly before the beginning of the festival, hundreds, even thousands of people converge from across the steppe towards the places where the events are to be held.
24:00For some, particularly the nomads, the festivities provide an opportunity to meet friends and relatives that they have not seen since last year.
24:13Jairs are erected everywhere around the villages.
24:17And not far from the horse race finishing line, a stage is set up where groups perform traditional Mongolian or more modern music.
24:28Any and all means of transport are used in order not to miss this event.
25:28To be continued...
25:58Appearing almost out of nowhere in the middle of the step,
26:22there are games areas for children to practice sport or just romp around.
26:28Like these children who are playing basketball, another sport that has become popular in Mongolia.
26:58The day of competitions is coming to an end. And quite a day it was. Yet even though it
27:14was extremely tiring, there are still a few trying out their bows.
27:44It was fun.
27:51It was fun.
27:56It was fun.
28:03It was fun.
28:08It was fun.
28:27It was fun.
28:54The Erden Zoo Monastery or Jewel Temple was built in 1585 and is undoubtedly the oldest
29:01Buddhist monastery in Mongolia.
29:07A wall of stupas guards the entrance to this monastery.
29:11Although it suffered greatly under Stalin, it miraculously still stands today.
29:18Only a few temples have survived and the monks were not allowed back to work until after
29:24the end of communism.
29:29There are 108 typically Tibetan Chautens, 108 being a sacred Buddhist number.
29:43The surrounding walls were built from the ruins of the ancient Mongol capital, whereas the
29:47main temple has been beautifully restored and now houses a rich collection of sacred objects.
29:52Even within the monastery we find, of course, the ever-present jairs.
30:21All Buddhist monasteries have prayer wheels.
30:50They usually consist of a cylinder with written mantras inside.
30:55They are generally aligned, but they don't always have the same shape or the same color.
31:01They do, however, have the same function.
31:07The cylinders are spun clockwise.
31:11Mongols believe that spinning the wheel is equivalent to reading the mantra.
31:15This allows the prayer to fly away.
31:17To fly away.
31:18To fly away.
31:24The напис questions of the Father's mind.

32:15Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia.
32:28It's the political, economic, industrial, scientific and cultural centre.
32:36Administratively, it has the status, unique in Mongolia, of a federal municipality, comparable to that of a province.
32:45The city stretches from east to west in the bottom of the Tuul River valley.
32:51Today, the Mongolian capital numbers about 1.3 million inhabitants, or about 45% of the total population of Mongolia.
33:00Ulaanbaatar is a modern city, mixing Soviet architecture with new constructions.
33:05During Nadam, everything is closed. It's the time for Mongols to meet and celebrate for three days.
33:21Cars proudly sport the colours of the Mongolian flag, and everyone dresses up for the festivities.
33:26The city centre is easily visited on foot.
33:33Ulaanbaatar is centred around Genghis Khan Square, formerly Sukhbata Square.
33:38A statue of the revolutionary hero Sukhbata was erected here,
33:42and since 2006, a giant statue of Genghis Khan has dominated the square.
33:46The city centre is a very small town of Genghis Khan.
34:16The Ulaanbaatarna dam, in contrast to Kakorin, takes place in a stadium.
34:21The archery competition is held in an annex of the stadium.
34:26It is, moreover, free for all spectators.
34:31Apart from individual archery events, there are also archery teams composed of ten archers.
34:37Each archer is given four arrows.
34:41Each team has to score 33 surs.
34:45The sur is a target in the form of leather cylinders.
35:15Men shoot their arrows from a distance of 75 meters away from the target.
35:19Women from 65 meters.
35:22Right up to the end of the event, when the medals are awarded,
35:26the archers are usually dressed in a traditional costume called a dél.
35:56That's a good one.
36:06We don't have to watch everything.
36:08Hurry up!
38:42As in all Mongolian Buddhist temples, once again, prayer wheels are present.
42:32So, access is easy to Alan Bator by train from either Russia or China.
44:30The Ulaanbaatar nadam is the biggest in Mongolia.
44:58It's also the most famous and the best organized.
45:04For the inhabitants of Ulaanbaatar, it's a major event.
45:07They would not miss it for anything in the world.
45:09Various activities take place around the stadium where the competitions are held.
45:17It's a bit like a fairground.
45:19You can eat traditional dishes, listen to popular songs or have your picture taken in traditional costume.
45:28It's a bit like a fairground.
45:32It's a bit like a fairground.
45:34The Ulaanbaatar nadam is the biggest in the world.
45:38It's a bit like a fairground.
47:40The traditional Bolero jacket was reversed, so that the little jacket would henceforth
47:45cover the back and not the chest, thus making this costume unsuitable for the fair sex
47:51to wear.
48:09Several hundred wrestlers take part in the Ulaanbaatar Nadal.
48:13They are so many, in fact, that they might wait several hours before fighting.
48:17All right.
48:17Oh, my God.
48:47I love you, man.
48:48I love you.
48:49I love you.
48:50I love you.
48:52I love you.
49:17I'm feeling little in.
49:22I'm a monster.
49:23I'm a little more older than me.
49:28Whoa.
49:29Thanks so much.
49:32Yeah.
49:32That was it.
49:46Solid.
50:02Nearly 20 years after the implosion of the Soviet Union and of its planified economic
50:26system, Mongolia is slowly raising its head again and finding its place, as best it can,
50:32in the capitalist world.
50:34But the country still cruelly suffers from the lack of infrastructures, and its budget
50:38is essentially supported by foreign subsidies.
50:41Yes, poverty is widespread, and enormous social progress needs to be made, but the newfound
50:47freedom for Mongols and their impressive faculties to adapt is helping this essentially rural
50:52country to develop its wealth and its resources.
50:56Nadam is one of its attributes that Mongolia is constantly developing.
51:00It's talked about both within Mongolia and abroad.
51:04But Nadam is much more than a simple sports competition.
51:07It represents an important part of Mongolian culture.
51:11The festival thus allows traditions to be preserved by all generations of Mongols.
51:26Thanks for joining us!
51:35Thanks for the music!
51:38Well done, I hope you continue sharing their career.
51:40Thanks for listening.
51:41Thanks!
51:42Thanks Ben!
51:43Yeah, I found one of my girls.
51:43And, thanks!
51:44I found a great joy!
51:45Thanks a lot!
51:46Have fun!
51:47Great!
51:48Thanks a lot!
