Christmas in Midnight Clear HD Online Full
Transcript
00:00:00Good morning, Lord.
00:00:10I have the same request as yesterday.
00:00:14Maybe with a little more urgency.
00:00:18Give me the strength to keep this place from falling apart.
00:00:22For Dad, my family, and everyone in this town who needs you.
00:00:30Hey, Lord, if you could help me figure out a way to pay for a new route before Christmas Eve service.
00:00:38Super helpful.
00:00:58Hey, Uncle Daniel.
00:01:00Morning, Tommy.
00:01:03I'm not complaining, as I love seeing you as often as we do, but I'm fairly sure your mother has cereal at your house.
00:01:10That stuff is not edible.
00:01:12I am a growing boy.
00:01:14I need sugar and something that tastes like actual food.
00:01:17Is your mom picking you up for school or am I taking you?
00:01:20I left her a note saying I'd be here.
00:01:22Eating a sufficient breakfast.
00:01:25Good placement on the eye roll, by the way.
00:01:26Oh, well, hallelujah.
00:01:28I have finally impressed my teenage nephew.
00:01:31Have you looked in on your grandfather yet?
00:01:33I need to check on me.
00:01:34I'm fine.
00:01:35I've got my son and my grandson, and I woke up breathing.
00:01:39God is good.
00:01:40How's the church roof doing?
00:01:44About as good as your hip.
00:01:45It seemed better days, but it's hanging in there.
00:01:48Well, at least my hip isn't leaking on the congregation.
00:01:50Hello.
00:01:55I come bearing gifts of the season in cookie form.
00:01:59Enjoy.
00:02:00Really, Dad, for breakfast?
00:02:02So whether you eat or drink, whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
00:02:071 Corinthians 10, verse 31.
00:02:10You're pulling out all the stops I see.
00:02:12Once a pastor, always a pastor.
00:02:14It's okay.
00:02:14He can have these.
00:02:15They're a new recipe.
00:02:16It's fat-free, gluten-free, sugar-free, and dairy-free.
00:02:22What's left?
00:02:23Air.
00:02:24Tommy.
00:02:26These aren't Christmas cookies, Mom.
00:02:28They're not good.
00:02:30They're not good at all.
00:02:31Really?
00:02:35Oh, um, well, okay.
00:02:37Well, they could use a little finessing.
00:02:40A little?
00:02:41You are my daughter, and I love and support you, but these are terrible.
00:02:46But they're...
00:02:47Yeah, okay.
00:02:49They're terrible.
00:02:50You don't have to eat them.
00:02:52But we should get going, kiddo.
00:02:54It's your last day before break.
00:02:56I can be late.
00:02:57Well, I can't.
00:02:58So let's get you to school and me to work.
00:03:00Come on.
00:03:01Chop, chop.
00:03:02Well, if I had a car, I wouldn't have to worry about anyone driving me.
00:03:06Just saying.
00:03:07Christmas is coming.
00:03:08Yeah.
00:03:09Not getting a car for Christmas, bud.
00:03:11Let's go.
00:03:11Let's go.
00:03:16Hey, uh, Mike and I heard that there might not be a Christmas festival this year.
00:03:21Something about insurance costs.
00:03:24It'll work.
00:03:25We always find a way.
00:03:27I was hoping you'd say that.
00:03:29I don't think we've ever not had one.
00:03:30And thanks for taking care of Dad.
00:03:35Stop.
00:03:38We're family.
00:03:39It's what we do.
00:03:41Well, thank you.
00:03:42Bye, Dad.
00:03:44Love ya.
00:03:44You know, I may have parts that are not working at full capacity, but I can still hear, you know.
00:03:54If I ever get to be a burden on you...
00:03:56Dad, we have talked about this.
00:03:58You're stuck with me.
00:04:01Well, if you insist, I'll say.
00:04:05But we do have other options to discuss.
00:04:09It would be the last thing I'd want to do, but...
00:04:11We're not selling the church.
00:04:14Maybe if you look at it like it's not so much about the church and more about family.
00:04:20We are all struggling.
00:04:22We've got my medical bills, insurance premiums we can hardly handle,
00:04:27and the house needing almost as many repairs as the church.
00:04:29You have always told us that God will provide.
00:04:32Why can't we still trust in that?
00:04:35We can.
00:04:36But sometimes, God provides through difficult decisions, Danny.
00:04:42I need to get to work.
00:04:44We'll get through this, Dad.
00:04:46We always do.
00:04:49Love you.
00:04:50Well, with success in other areas, I believe now is the perfect time to forge into Midnight Clear.
00:05:10Forgive me for sounding pessimistic, Mr. Shaw, but I was the one that was there last year.
00:05:16There's no way they'll all agree to sell.
00:05:19And that's why I'm sending in our top acquisition specialist.
00:05:23This town represents our biggest opportunity yet.
00:05:27Prime real estate, desperate sellers,
00:05:30and hopefully, with Hillary overseeing the deal,
00:05:35minimal resistance.
00:05:37Hillary.
00:05:39Okay.
00:05:40So as Richard stated, I'll start with the properties that have shown interest,
00:05:43solidify those deals while talking to the more stubborn holdouts.
00:05:46The more I can bring on board to sell,
00:05:48the easier it's going to be to convince the others
00:05:50that this is the best plan for our future.
00:05:53Okay?
00:05:56Thank you, everyone.
00:05:57That will be all.
00:06:12Wow.
00:06:13Love the Christmas spirit.
00:06:16Some of us are busy executives,
00:06:17and as much as we like Christmas,
00:06:19we like to close deals more.
00:06:22Good speech today.
00:06:24If you want, I could take you to dinner,
00:06:27show you my notes on the town, owners.
00:06:29Could help you when you get there.
00:06:31I appreciate the offer,
00:06:32but I think a fresh set of eyes and a new approach might be the answer.
00:06:36I'll call you if I have any questions when I get there, okay?
00:06:38Thanks, though.
00:06:40I'll leave you to it, then.
00:06:49Brandon, I told you, I'm all good.
00:06:52I can see that.
00:06:55Prepping?
00:06:56Yes.
00:06:58This could be a massive win for the company.
00:07:00If you play it right, for you.
00:07:03I appreciate that.
00:07:05I do have a question, though.
00:07:06Have you seen this church?
00:07:07It's right in the middle of the town,
00:07:10and I don't know, I think it could be considered historic.
00:07:13Okay.
00:07:14And?
00:07:15Well, look at it.
00:07:18I'm not sure taking it down and following our standard operation
00:07:21will work in midnight clear.
00:07:23Hillary, business is business.
00:07:26That church sits on prime real estate.
00:07:29It's the best point in town.
00:07:30It's perfect visibility from the highway.
00:07:32Look, you work around it or through it.
00:07:37I don't care what you choose.
00:07:38Just get it done.
00:07:39I will.
00:07:41But maybe our community development initiative could work here.
00:07:45Hillary, that community development initiative is there to make us money.
00:07:49That revitalization stuff is simply good marketing.
00:07:54Yeah, the church does seem like it's in pretty bad shape.
00:07:57Yeah, well, even better.
00:07:59Easy to justify demolition for safety reasons.
00:08:02What's our cover story?
00:08:04No story needed here.
00:08:06We're offering these people more money than they've ever seen in their life.
00:08:10Most will jump at the chance.
00:08:12And the holdouts?
00:08:14Eminent domain.
00:08:16If necessary.
00:08:17And the county's already interested in the increased tax revenue.
00:08:23I need those contracts signed by Christmas Eve.
00:08:27That's a few weeks away.
00:08:31Then I suggest you tell them whatever it is they need to hear to get the job done on time.
00:08:36Understood?
00:08:37Mm-hmm.
00:08:38Good.
00:08:39Oh, uh...
00:08:43Raquel and I look forward to seeing you at Christmas dinner.
00:08:53Merry Christmas to you, too, Dad.
00:08:55Merry Christmas to you, too.
00:09:13Hello?
00:09:13Is anyone here?
00:09:16Oh, hi.
00:09:19Excuse me.
00:09:19Hi.
00:09:20Hi.
00:09:21What can I do for you?
00:09:22I'm Hillary Shaw from Shaw Development.
00:09:24I just wanted to get a few minutes of your time and talk to you about your property.
00:09:29Not interested.
00:09:30Oh.
00:09:30You didn't even listen to what I have to say.
00:09:34I don't need to.
00:09:36You said you're from a development company, right?
00:09:38This church has been in my family for four generations.
00:09:41We've developed.
00:09:46Uh, okay.
00:09:48Mr.
00:09:50It's Pastor.
00:09:51Pastor Porter.
00:09:53Pastor Porter, I completely understand your attachment.
00:09:56But I'm here to completely revitalize your community.
00:10:01There will be wonderful opportunities for retail, community centers, jobs for local residents, and affordable housing.
00:10:07Affordable for who?
00:10:10You or me?
00:10:14May I ask, what do you know about Midnight Clear aside from charts and zoning?
00:10:21Do you know how many folks live in the senior home, which the church funds, or how many people you'd be displacing?
00:10:27I should warn you, Ms. Shaw, one of my finer traits is that I'm able to see through people who don't tell the whole truth.
00:10:34Any chance you'd like to tell me the real plan?
00:10:37I just told you.
00:10:39You told me what you think I want to hear.
00:10:45Pastor Porter, I'm just trying to help your community.
00:10:48Clearly you're struggling economically.
00:10:50Almost half your main street is closed.
00:10:52Your church is literally falling down.
00:10:55And you think your money can solve all our problems.
00:10:58Yeah, I think money solves a lot of things.
00:11:01Like leaking roofs and medical bills.
00:11:02I do my homework.
00:11:08Ms. Shaw, there's some things that can't be bought.
00:11:10Community is one of them.
00:11:11Faith is another.
00:11:14Well, what good are community and faith if your buildings collapse?
00:11:18This church and this community, we're not for sale.
00:11:22Everything is.
00:11:22It's just a matter of finding the right price.
00:11:24Some things have value that can't be measured in dollars, Ms. Shaw.
00:11:29Now, if you please excuse me.
00:11:31I have work to do.
00:11:32Hi.
00:11:55Welcome to the Evergreen Inn.
00:11:57I'm Nicole.
00:11:57Can I get you checked in?
00:11:58Yeah, I think so.
00:12:02Oh, you must be admiring our Christmas decorations.
00:12:06Isn't it wonderful?
00:12:07We really like to go all out here.
00:12:09Yeah, we certainly do.
00:12:13The reservation's under Shaw.
00:12:14Oh, sure.
00:12:16Great.
00:12:17You've come at a perfect time of year.
00:12:18We have so many wonderful Christmas events, so hopefully you're in town for a while to enjoy them.
00:12:22No, I won't be staying long.
00:12:24Oh, can I ask what brings you to Midnight Clear?
00:12:26Just doing some business.
00:12:27And what business are you in?
00:12:29Are you going to be meeting with locals around here?
00:12:31Oh, I'm so sorry.
00:12:32I've had a really long trip.
00:12:34I just want to get checked in.
00:12:35No problem.
00:12:36No problem at all.
00:12:42Oh, wow.
00:12:42Oh, my God.
00:13:02Insanity.
00:13:28Okay, let's see what we're working with here.
00:13:32Okay, let's see what we're working with here.
00:14:02Okay, let's see what we're working with here.
00:14:09So, you're the one staying at the Evergreen Inn.
00:14:15Here you're asking questions about the town.
00:14:17Well...
00:14:19Oh, honey.
00:14:51Maybe more.
00:14:52Well, I'm here to assess the area for potential development opportunities, to revitalize.
00:14:58That's a fancy word for tearing things down so you can build them back up again, isn't it?
00:15:02No, not necessarily.
00:15:04Sometimes it means preserving what matters while creating new opportunities.
00:15:09And who decides what matters.
00:15:11Wow.
00:15:12This coffee's excellent.
00:15:16That's the same blend my folks served when they opened this place in 1964.
00:15:23My dad always said a town needs three things to survive.
00:15:30A place to pray, a place to learn, and a place to gather.
00:15:36We already had a church and a school, but no place for folks to just be.
00:15:41So, they opened this.
00:15:43That's a lovely story.
00:15:44Well, it's not a story.
00:15:45It's family.
00:15:46It's tradition.
00:15:48Every booth in here has seen marriage proposals and business deals, celebrations, and heartache.
00:16:02Just think about those things before you start telling folks to walk away from all they know.
00:16:15I should go.
00:16:32Insurance is denied the claim for my physical therapy sessions.
00:16:43What's the reason this time?
00:16:45They say it wasn't medically necessary.
00:16:48Tell that to my hip.
00:16:51How much was it?
00:16:53$550.
00:16:55It's okay, dad. I'll figure it out.
00:17:00With what?
00:17:02You haven't taken a salary from the church in over six months.
00:17:05I can't ask people to tithe more when they're barely making ends meet themselves.
00:17:09We're three months behind on the house payment.
00:17:12And the church needs a new move that's gonna cost $15,000.
00:17:15I still know all of that, too.
00:17:17You have taught me that faith and prayer can change things.
00:17:21Anything.
00:17:23I agree.
00:17:24Both powerful weapons.
00:17:26But given our current situation...
00:17:29She's gotta be kidding.
00:17:31What are you talking about?
00:17:33This lady was at the church earlier. She's back again.
00:17:36Maybe she's a tourist.
00:17:39She's not.
00:17:40How do you know?
00:17:42Tourists don't come to midnight clear, dad. Not anymore.
00:17:46Not to take pictures of empty storefronts and churches falling down.
00:17:50Plus, I talk to her.
00:17:53I know exactly who she is.
00:18:00I know you do, son.
00:18:02I can't imagine what you're up to.
00:18:07But whatever it is, thanks in advance for what you're working on.
00:18:12Can I help you with something?
00:18:22It's nice to see you again, Pastor. I didn't realize anyone would be here.
00:18:27Well, I do work here, which, you know.
00:18:29All due respect, we've already discussed where we both stand.
00:18:34I think this is one of those moments we agree to disagree.
00:18:38Pastor Porter, I think we got off on the wrong foot this morning.
00:18:41I'd like to start again.
00:18:43I'm Hillary Shaw.
00:18:48Daniel Porter.
00:18:50And you're snooping around because...
00:18:52I wasn't snooping.
00:18:54Okay, fine. I was snooping.
00:18:56Look, we specialize in community revitalization projects.
00:19:01Community revitalization?
00:19:03Right.
00:19:04Historical buildings can be the centerpieces of our development projects.
00:19:07Development projects? Okay.
00:19:09Modern housing, commercial spaces, job creation.
00:19:13We can bring prosperity back to towns like yours.
00:19:16Hmm. Towns like mine.
00:19:19Pastor, is there a reason why you keep repeating everything I'm saying?
00:19:22Or are you just trying to get me to leave?
00:19:25I'm not leaving.
00:19:28I know you care deeply about this town, but...
00:19:31The question is whether caring is enough to save it.
00:19:35Save it from who? You?
00:19:39From economic collapse.
00:19:42From becoming a town for sale.
00:19:45This community has survived the Great Depression,
00:19:47two world wars, economic recession, and natural disasters.
00:19:51Know how we've done it?
00:19:53By sticking together and relying on faith.
00:19:57Can I give you some advice, Miss Shaw?
00:20:00If you want to help this town, get to know us.
00:20:04Realize what we value before you decide what we need.
00:20:09That's what I'm trying to do.
00:20:11No, you are trying to evaluate our assets and liabilities.
00:20:14There's a difference.
00:20:16A big one.
00:20:18Whatever's happening at the office is not my fault.
00:20:21I beg to differ.
00:20:23No one is planning the Christmas party.
00:20:24Well, I'll be lucky if I can make it home before Christmas Eve.
00:20:28Honestly, if I can't convince these people to sell,
00:20:30I might as well not come home because my dad is going to disown me.
00:20:32As an employee or daughter?
00:20:34Both.
00:20:35That bad?
00:20:36Yeah, it's not good.
00:20:37How long have you been there?
00:20:39I think less than 24 hours.
00:20:40I think less than 24 hours.
00:20:41What's your obligation to do with your daughter?
00:20:42We'll be able to ask you to go home.
00:20:43We'll be able to dive in.
00:20:45Whatever is happening at the office is not my fault.
00:20:47I beg to differ.
00:20:48as well not come home because my dad's gonna disown me as an employee or daughter both that
00:20:54bad yeah it's not good how long have you been there i think less than 24 hours i'm sorry did
00:21:01you think that you could seal up the town in less than a day obviously you're good but no one is that
00:21:07good so who have you all talked to so far i had a brief intro with the owner of the diner spoke to
00:21:13the woman who runs the inn here and oh right the pastor yeah it didn't go well with him either
00:21:21time you've visited him twice already the first time wasn't ideal and then the second time just
00:21:28went downhill from there so leave the pastor for now talk to everybody else that's what daniel said
00:21:37i mean the um the pastor okay well thanks brandon i appreciate all your help anytime you know this
00:21:50all right let's get to know this town
00:21:58all i'm saying is whatever this company offers could be a chance to get folks back on track
00:22:04we're two weeks from christmas and half our businesses have already informed me they can't
00:22:09make january rent how are we gonna fund the christmas festival we already know the church can't help out
00:22:15anymore the church never let the town down it's not gonna start now you say that frank but things are
00:22:21not the same as they used to be it's true bookings at the inn are down 50 percent from this time last year
00:22:28i hate to say it but if that company offers enough to pay off debts i'm afraid that people are going to
00:22:38take the money and move i know i know but we can't just go selling our properties to the highest bidder
00:22:45nicole i hear you we all do but families are leaving if we don't do something to change things
00:22:53there's not going to be enough left of us to keep this town working
00:23:04sorry to interrupt i'm hillary shaw from
00:23:10right you already know who i am we were just talking about you and your company noted thank you for your
00:23:18honesty mr frank porter i'm daniel's father oh i believe you two have already mess indeed we have
00:23:28um i was hoping to get a coffee to go coming right up we're just decorating cookies for the christmas
00:23:34festival if we can even have it feel free to help out if you like oh i don't think i'd be very good
00:23:40company thank you though does anyone have any recommendations for a business i can visit i was
00:23:46hoping to get to know the town while i'm here i got a place if anyone has any questions i'll be staying
00:23:54at the evergreen inn happy to talk one-on-one okay thank you hi dad
00:24:06break's over let's get back to these cookies
00:24:19thank you for taking the time thank you sir for lending me some of yours it's frank may i call you
00:24:25hillary mm-hmm you know hillary i was in the church when you and daniel had your first meeting
00:24:29i'm not sure i'd call it a meeting it felt more like round one isn't that what business meetings
00:24:36sometimes are your son is a very strong-willed man don't i know it
00:24:42i was hoping i'd see you today and i was hoping the same thing about you i'm hillary shaw oh uh
00:25:01she's uh a friend of daniel's i asked her to join me here for a bit of midnight clear christmas history
00:25:08good to meet you have a seat i sure remember this day christmas 1968
00:25:21my father was the pastor then we had a brutal snowstorm that lasted for days
00:25:28and the church roof couldn't support all the snow and it collapsed it's terrible on christmas eve yep
00:25:34hours before our annual service the sanctuary was covered in snow and broken beams tell her what
00:25:42happened next frank well seeing as how the first church at midnight clear collapsed it struck a bit
00:25:49of a chord with the community we turned to see the entire town walking down main street with shovels and
00:26:00tools and tarps and you name it and by 6 30 we had a makeshift sanctuary and that christmas eve service
00:26:10was the most beautiful this town has ever seen that's when i met my late husband he was helping clear
00:26:18the snow and i was making hot cocoa for the workers
00:26:21so how long has the church been the center of all your christmases since the very beginning
00:26:30it's beautiful all these families all these christmases miss shaw would you like to share
00:26:37some of your family's traditions oh no no um i just i'd rather hear about midnight clear
00:26:45i don't know if you'll still be in town hillary but christmas eve here is nothing like you've ever
00:26:51seen after the candlelight service the whole town gathers to sing christmas carols and then we walk
00:26:58down main street to the diner for hot cider and and cocoa and betty's famous christmas cookies
00:27:05okay um thank you for your time i'm just i have to go have another meeting really busy while i'm here thank you
00:27:19hi dad how's everything going it's okay a little complicated how so
00:27:39this isn't just another failing small town dad they have a strong community they all start off as
00:27:46strong communities hillary i don't know midnight clear feels different well the good news is you've
00:27:53only been there for a short while true but i think there are some properties worth preserving we're in
00:28:00the business of building a future not maintaining a past right i know but what if the past is worth
00:28:07maintaining please do not get sidetracked remember why you're there yes to evaluate business opportunities
00:28:17no to close a business deal okay hear me out what if what if we could find a way to develop what's
00:28:24here without destroying what makes it special what makes it special is the location and the price
00:28:30point everything else is just sentiment well what if sentiment matters dad not to our investors
00:28:38hillary i need you focused can you finish this job or should i send somebody who can
00:28:43i can handle it good look make contact with the key players tomorrow start with the pastor since he's
00:28:54the biggest obstacle of the church property i don't think the pastor is going to agree to that that church
00:29:00is the centerpiece to the whole development without it the project doesn't work get him to sign off on this
00:29:16good morning pastor porter miss shaw i wanted to bring you a coffee i was hoping that this could
00:29:34be a peace offering why are we at war it's actually thoughtful thank you you sound surprised well my dad
00:29:43seems to be warming to you but i'm still trying to figure you out oh i have christmas cookies betty
00:29:51insisted when she knew that the second coffee was for you very very popular master porter
00:29:58daniel please it's hillary then good morning ladies
00:30:11how long until the whole town knows that you're sharing cookies and coffee with the enemy
00:30:15oh they already know so what are you doing here fixing a pew you need any help you know how to fix pews
00:30:24no but i know how to hold things while someone else fixes them okay hold here
00:30:44morning grandpa what you doing just watching over things what things i don't see anything that's
00:30:57because from where you are you're only focused on one thing we fix our eyes not on what is seen
00:31:05but what is unseen for what a seed is temporary and what is unseen is heavenly grandpa i'm on christmas break
00:31:14which means i don't want to learn your uncle's in the church with miss shaw i believe he is finally
00:31:21starting to let his guard down as is she how do you know that by looking not at what is in front of our
00:31:29eyes but what is unseen second corinthians chapter 4 verse 18. look it up grandpa i love you but i told
00:31:40you and uncle d i'm not interested in the family business we'll see
00:31:51hey uncle d
00:31:57am i heading out to go work the tree farm now thanks tommy your grandfather okay
00:32:02he was staring out a window when i left tommy this is miss shaw right grandpa said something about
00:32:12letting guards down then he read me some scripture i did not understand
00:32:19so you're that development lady huh guilty as charged you're here to offer us a good deal
00:32:25your uncle your uncle has been very strong-willed at refusing ah yeah he he gets like that anyways i gotta
00:32:34go nice meeting you miss shaw hi
00:32:42sorry about that seems like a good kid oh he is mostly well i'll let you get back to work
00:32:51if you want i um could show you around town later spots the tourists don't see i'm not exactly a
00:32:58tourist am i no you are most definitely not but i'd still be willing to show you i'd like that
00:33:07pick you up in an hour see you soon
00:33:21oh i'm so sorry no that's okay are you okay i'm fine are you off to a big meeting or something
00:33:36not exactly well i really hope you're enjoying the day i i mean i know you're here on business
00:33:41do you do you know where i could buy a pair of boots for like walking in the snow i didn't pack
00:33:46strategically i'm i have nothing okay well um what shoe size are you nine yeah yeah yeah i i can drop
00:33:55a pair off in a few nicole right yeah thank you my pleasure okay i'll see you later have a good day bye
00:34:17what
00:34:20nothing um i was just wondering when you had time to go shopping maybe i brought these with me
00:34:27nicole she lent me a few things do i still look like i don't belong just the opposite come on
00:34:46sorry i don't i don't mean to be rude but am i missing something this this just looks like a field
00:34:56covered in snow that's what it is now but spring through fall it's a community garden
00:35:03every family in town gets applaud and folks share what they grow the abbots plant extra tomatoes
00:35:11because the jones would love them but can't get theirs to ripen the browns plants mostly all of our
00:35:17lettuce and nicole plants all of our flowers way over there so what do people do in the winter plan for
00:35:25next year my point is is we all look out for each other count on one another i don't think
00:35:33i've ever had anyone count on me like that your father does doesn't he he counts on my successes it's not the same
00:35:42what do you count on
00:35:49my job my reputation and my ability to get things done
00:35:56that sounds lonely it is anyway where to next
00:36:08enough to you
00:36:29this is all that's left of the first church that was built here at midnight clear
00:36:34despite efforts to preserve it it just wasn't safe anymore so dad built another one
00:36:41but folks around here keep its memory alive
00:36:47in the summer people gather here for plays live music even outdoor weddings and next week if
00:36:54we can pull it off it'll be host to the christmas tidings and trees celebration
00:36:59why wouldn't you be able to pull it off costs are up and our budget is down i'm too pleased
00:37:06committee's meeting in the morning to go over finances thank you
00:37:17thank you for today well thank you for really seeing it like we do yeah it's it's growing on me
00:37:25so what's her name sorry your oh your wife i sorry i just assumed you oh we're married you had a ring
00:37:36on oh sorry it's none of my business i didn't mean to no no no no um it's okay i was married my wife she um
00:37:47she passed away
00:37:51i'm so sorry it's okay it was a long time ago
00:37:58uh that's uh that's the end of the tour we should probably get going
00:38:05sorry if i said something about your wife i did not mean to not at all
00:38:10yeah i should get back to work anyway i just uh okay i have everything yeah i'm gonna walk
00:38:18you sure yeah
00:38:22thanks for today daniel
00:38:40do you want to know what's going on in here
00:38:44i had tommy bring these down these are our christmas tree ornaments we haven't put up a tree
00:38:50since beth and it's time this year we are going to have an all-out holly jolly christmas
00:39:00well we can't decorate tonight though we don't have a tree
00:39:03it's too late to start tonight though we'll decorate tomorrow
00:39:16hillary's pretty dad don't she is here to buy the church looks to me like she might be here to fall
00:39:23in love with it i hope you're right i have been praying for an answer to our problem maybe she's it
00:39:31and what if she's the problem that's not up to you is it that's up to god
00:39:44i'll be quick bottom line is we need thirty five hundred dollars to cover the insurance and
00:40:02permits without it there's no tidings and trees celebration
00:40:06there has to be something we can do how about a bake sale i'll donate and organize the whole town
00:40:14betty we'd need to sell a thousand overpriced pies to raise the kind of money we need
00:40:24sorry are you closed okay uh we uh nope come on in coffee sure
00:40:36actually miss shaw can hear this as it affects the town and well for better or worse your company
00:40:43might be part of our future well i'm happy to answer any questions right now we're trying
00:40:48to save our christmas celebration dan i mean pastor porter he mentioned an issue just a minor detail of
00:40:56thirty five hundred dollars thanks i don't need any change thanks betty
00:41:02i'll let you guys get back to it can i talk to you for a sec there's no way we can come up with
00:41:11thirty five hundred dollars there's got to be a way we have to try we've had bigger challenges than
00:41:16this we're just thirty five hundred dollars divided by how many people in the town or how many families
00:41:20or how many businesses it there's there's a solution there always is i think we could just put our heads
00:41:24together what hillary just donated money how much all of it what she's covering everything all the costs
00:41:36and just like that we have ourselves the christmas tidings and trees celebration after all
00:41:43thank you
00:41:54good morning father a little early for a check-in isn't it thought you'd call last night
00:42:13yeah i was just getting to know the town like you suggested
00:42:16how are the signatures coming i i haven't done that yet look the town is financially desperate and
00:42:26they they almost didn't have their christmas festival this year yeah perfect use christmas promise
00:42:32them the best festival they've ever had it's a great idea dad what about the church you're letting
00:42:39your emotions cloud your judgment remember who you work for get those signatures by christmas eve or i'll
00:42:46find someone who can
00:42:59historic preservation rants
00:43:08oh what about this one it could be your christmas tree this year
00:43:12not without opening up a hole in my roof well maybe the snow will cave it in first and then you can get it
00:43:18what i'm i'm kidding i'm kidding not funny hey look who just walked in hey miss shaw over here
00:43:27hey
00:43:29what i thought we could maybe thank her for her donation
00:43:33hi hey guys i want to go help a friend at the stands i thought you were gonna help me get a tree
00:43:43i was hey miss shaw what are you doing right now
00:43:48nothing really great i'm gonna go help with hot chocolate and you two can pick out a tree together
00:43:55look at us spreading the joy
00:43:59look at us um sorry about that he's gotten very comfortable giving his uncle life advice
00:44:08just so you know i have no idea how to pick out a christmas tree
00:44:11well if you're serious about not having any plans i would love some company
00:44:27my father told me what you did
00:44:35you gave this town reason to believe that prayer really can change things
00:44:41i've been called a lot of things but never an answer to a prayer
00:44:44what you did was more than generous hillary you have no idea what the christmas season means to this community
00:44:53i'm starting to
00:45:00can i ask why why you did it honestly i don't know i did it before i even knew what i was doing
00:45:07i just i don't think i've been a part of something that mattered before and i can tell this really mattered to you
00:45:21to everyone i mean to the town
00:45:23want to know what i think
00:45:30i think you've been touched by the christmas spirit
00:45:33who me no
00:45:53good you're still there
00:46:02um
00:46:04were you serious about helping me if i need it
00:46:07like really serious
00:46:09what do you need
00:46:11research
00:46:12whatever you can get on historic preservation grants tax incentives and i don't know community
00:46:16development partnerships oh oh and info on successful projects that have preserved existing
00:46:22structures instead of demolishing them hillary i know okay i know if you can't help me i understand
00:46:30let me see what i can find thank you also look into what it cost to restore a 19th century church
00:46:37i'm just asking for a friend you got it thank you
00:46:43okay
00:46:52hi
00:47:00hi
00:47:01hi
00:47:01i have a few moments before i have to go help nicole with the festival so
00:47:06i just thought i'd come and see what you're doing look at you starting to fit in
00:47:10uh let's not get carried away
00:47:12i've never really belonged anywhere well you do here
00:47:25you know even though this church needs so many repairs it's
00:47:31stunning
00:47:31my late wife beth used to always say that broken things could be the most beautiful of all
00:47:37she always saw the potential where others saw problems in the church you mean in here and
00:47:48with me
00:47:48when we met i couldn't wait to see what life was going to give me
00:47:54what happened beth helped me to see that sometimes what we think we want isn't actually what we need
00:48:05and what did you want to leave midnight clear travel the world build something new somewhere
00:48:13we're not here and now now i can't imagine being anywhere else
00:48:24i think back to all the roads that god had me travel down to get me to this place i am now
00:48:28i mean think about it all the roads you had to travel to get you here
00:48:36i know i shouldn't be saying this to a pastor but i'm not sure about the whole faith thing
00:48:44mind if i ask why
00:48:48if there is a god he hasn't really shown much interest in me
00:48:52maybe
00:48:55maybe you haven't been looking for him
00:49:03there has to be a way that we can save the church and i can help this town i just
00:49:09i haven't figured it out yet but i promise i'm going to do everything i can
00:49:22nicole do you think we can put the hot chocolate stand in the center of the festival
00:49:26yeah sure where were you thinking by the benches that way people can sit while they drink
00:49:31then we can have betty's cookies right beside great promotion for both i love it
00:49:35you know you really were not what we expected when we heard there was a big city developer coming
00:49:40here what did you expect someone who saw dollar signs instead of people oh i was definitely
00:49:46that person when i got here and now i still see a few dollar signs but i see people more can i ask
00:49:58you something what you're doing here is it really going to help our town or is it part of some bigger
00:50:05plan last week it was a bigger plan but helping this town feels more important to me
00:50:12it's probably the most important thing i've ever done really hold on
00:50:19i'll be right back i gotta take this
00:50:27oh sorry um do you have to get that no it can wait i'm glad i ran into you not literally but it worked
00:50:38out so that's good right okay i think i was wondering if you'd like to join us tonight
00:50:49we're decorating christmas cookies there will be pizza involved if that helps make your decision
00:50:55really i'm not intruding on a family tradition or anything i think it's time for a few new ones
00:51:02and truthfully my father overestimates my decorating abilities and i underestimate the time it'll take
00:51:08i'd love to okay we'll see you later okay bye
00:51:32that pizza is so good guys look at this old nativity set i found oh wow
00:51:49look
00:51:55your grandmother made this the christmas after you were born tommy
00:51:57she worked on it for months
00:52:05i forgot we still had this it's beautiful
00:52:10my mom would always say that every angel should look like they're carrying good news
00:52:15so where are we gonna put it what about in front of the window yeah that's a good idea that way
00:52:21everybody who walks by can see it that's exactly where it belongs
00:52:27that's exactly where it belongs
00:52:32kind of like you
00:52:36i have been praying for someone to help daniel remember how to laugh
00:52:41thank you
00:52:44dad
00:52:46are you bothering hillary no no not at all
00:52:49in fact i was just asking him about those christmas cookies you promised me in exchange for my decorating skills
00:52:57when you offered cookies you never mentioned that i would have to make them
00:53:13confession time i don't know how to make christmas cookies from scratch
00:53:23what other way is there you know the the tube thing from the store no no you can't be serious
00:53:30beth was the baker i was the taste tester plus when you've got someone like betty making cookies for you
00:53:35where did you learn how to bake
00:53:41my mom
00:53:43yeah she was
00:53:45she was an incredible baker
00:53:47oh she was so kind considerate and
00:53:51she cared about well everything
00:53:54is that a bad thing
00:53:58i didn't think so no
00:54:01my dad would say caring doesn't pay the bills
00:54:06neither does not caring
00:54:11hillary um
00:54:12what happened
00:54:18make you afraid of faith
00:54:21i'm not afraid of it i just
00:54:24i just don't believe in it you know
00:54:27my mother was diagnosed with cancer when i was 10.
00:54:30the church prayed for her and two years later she was gone
00:54:36and you blame god
00:54:37a little yeah
00:54:43maybe a lot
00:54:48prayer
00:54:50isn't just about getting what we want
00:54:53it's also about finding strengths for what we get
00:55:03we call that divine intervention
00:55:07i like her
00:55:21so does your uncle
00:55:23you think she'll stay
00:55:24till after christmas i mean
00:55:26well i think she's already decided to stay
00:55:29she just doesn't know it yet
00:55:34you didn't have to walk me home
00:55:37what if i didn't want tonight to end
00:55:43thank you
00:55:44for sharing your family traditions with me
00:55:48this last week spending time with you
00:55:51i remember what hope feels like
00:55:55what it feels like to look forward to tomorrow
00:55:59it's been a long time since i felt that
00:56:01um that that that that was a lot i'm i might not practice
00:56:10no no it's not i i feel the same
00:56:15i just i just don't want you hating me if i can't
00:56:18whatever it is
00:56:25i have faith in you
00:56:31that thing you told me earlier today about
00:56:33god not showing up in your life
00:56:36what if he's been here all along
00:56:38good night daniel
00:56:44good night
00:56:52if you're up there
00:56:54i could really use a miracle right now
00:56:56this might just work
00:57:20hi dad i was just gonna call you
00:57:21i find that hard to believe
00:57:24considering numerous calls texts and emails have gone unanswered for days
00:57:29where are we with the contracts
00:57:31there's progress i just need a little bit more time
00:57:33you know where our investors are concerned
00:57:36quite frankly so am i
00:57:38you get them to sign or you find leverage to make them
00:57:41dad i understand i do i just
00:57:44there's got to be a better way to address these issues and then
00:57:47hillary what side are you on is it mine
00:57:52you get them to sign today
00:58:08hi hi
00:58:12i hope it's okay that i'm here
00:58:14of course
00:58:16church is always open to anyone who needs to talk to god
00:58:19unfortunately i'm the one doing all the talking
00:58:22after you talk did you listen
00:58:25now you tell me
00:58:33everything okay
00:58:36i think i found a plan to help your town and save your church
00:58:41that kind of sounds like a miracle so why don't you seem happier
00:58:44it's my father he just won't listen to me
00:58:46you know we have these investors and they want their money out and
00:58:54something's changed since i've been here
00:58:56i just
00:58:57i like this me in midnight clear i i like the town i like the people here and
00:59:06i like you
00:59:17i like you too
00:59:17do you want to tell me your idea
00:59:25i've been working on it all night i actually have a friend helping me in the office too
00:59:29daniel look at these numbers this could actually work
00:59:36i just need to get the town on board to support this and then i need to convince my father that
00:59:41this plan is actually better than his original plan and you think you can do that
00:59:45honestly i don't know but i'm going to try everything that i can
00:59:48can you help me get everyone together for a meeting
01:00:01i have everyone's attention please
01:00:11we're all aware of the current circumstances and the
01:00:27offers that everyone's been receiving from shaw enterprises
01:00:31but before we walk away from everything our ancestors and our families
01:00:36have worked so hard for
01:00:39i think we should hear hillary's idea
01:00:41i'm sorry pastor but you're a little too late
01:00:49shaw development made a formal offer for the entire town including the church what

01:12:07I just want to say goodbye.
01:12:11Hey, for what it's worth, I'm sorry.
01:12:14I thought you had a really strong plan.
01:12:16We had a strong plan.
01:12:18Thanks again for all your help.
01:12:20I should have known my father would never change his mind.
01:12:24Do you have any plans for Christmas?
01:12:26I think dinner with my father is off the table, so, yeah.
01:12:32Stay in touch, okay?
01:12:34And if you ever need any more help, I'm here.
01:12:38Thanks, Brandon.
01:12:40Merry Christmas.
01:12:41Merry Christmas.
01:12:46You're seriously quitting.
01:12:50Look, I know you think this town is different, but you'll see it's not.
01:12:55Congratulations, by the way.
01:12:57For what exactly?
01:12:59Your underhanded tactics.
01:13:00Calling in what I'm sure were numerous favors to report the code violations two days before Christmas.
01:13:07It was you who gave me the idea.
01:13:09What are you talking about?
01:13:10Well, what was it you reported about the roof?
01:13:15Structural damage?
01:13:16Leaks?
01:13:18Potential collapse?
01:13:19The roof, that's what the code violations were all about?
01:13:26Yeah.
01:13:28What's funny?
01:13:32Nothing.
01:13:33You just gave me the best Christmas present ever.
01:13:36I don't think I understand.
01:13:41Merry Christmas, Dad.
01:13:42Merry Christmas, Evie.
01:14:01I know I can't fix everything else, but I can try to save Christmas Eve service, at least.
01:14:07How?
01:14:07The church is condemned.
01:14:09I have an idea.
01:14:10But just don't tell Daniel, because I don't want to get his hopes up.
01:14:14Please.
01:14:16I have nowhere else to go.
01:14:21Well, then welcome home.
01:14:26I know it's Christmas, but I need roofing materials.
01:14:37Thanks, anyway.
01:14:40Hi, it's Hillary Shaw.
01:14:47I understand that you might have some leftover shingles.
01:14:49Is there any way you could donate them?
01:14:54Hello?
01:14:55Hello?
01:15:03Okay.
01:15:04Plan B.
01:15:07I overheard her asking people for materials to fix the church roof.
01:15:15I can't believe she came back.
01:15:18Maybe she's trying to fix things.
01:15:20A little late, considering tomorrow's Christmas Eve.
01:15:23The roof, you say.
01:15:26Let me tell you ladies a story.
01:15:28Oh, yeah, yeah.
01:15:29Picture it.
01:15:30Christmas, 1968.
01:15:33Oh, it was a storm.
01:15:55Hillary.
01:15:55Hillary.
01:15:55Hillary.
01:15:55Hillary.
01:15:58I heard you came back.
01:16:02I guess my question is why.
01:16:06I just came back to try to fix what I broke.
01:16:12You didn't break the roof.
01:16:14I just thought if I could get it repaired today, that they would lift the code violations, and
01:16:19you could do your Christmas Eve service.
01:16:24You really came back for that?
01:16:27I've called construction companies, suppliers, contract workers.
01:16:32Turns out, unlike my father, no one is working on Christmas Eve.
01:16:36Daniel, I am so sorry for trying to get you to sell when I first came here, for what my father did, for everything.
01:16:49I quit my job.
01:16:50And I wanted to go.
01:16:52And I wanted to come back here and just...
01:16:54I wanted to make things right.
01:16:57You quit?
01:16:59None of it matters.
01:17:01Not without this town and everyone here.
01:17:03and I didn't just come back for the roof
01:17:07I came back for you
01:17:10I understand how upset you are with me
01:17:16and if you want me to leave
01:17:19I will
01:17:21I just
01:17:22I just wanted you to know how I feel
01:17:26you're coming back as the best Christmas gift

01:18:05was happy to donate materials for a good cause
01:18:08as soon as the roof is fixed
01:18:10I'll lift the code violations
01:18:12and if we finish before 7

01:18:30as soon as 있거든요
01:18:32On this holy night, we celebrate not only the birth of our Savior,
01:18:57but the power of hope, faith, community, and forgiveness.
01:19:07Mary and Joseph had no place to go.
01:19:12They were alone, far from home.
01:19:16It looked impossible.
01:19:19I'm sure it felt hopeless.
01:19:22But God specializes in impossible situations.
01:19:27In our community, we still face many unknowns.
01:19:36A lot of us are probably feeling like we're in our own dark stable right now.
01:19:42But just as God provided that night in Bethlehem,
01:19:45He provided for us today and He will provide for us in every tomorrow.
01:19:50The birth of Jesus reminds us that God specializes in new beginnings,
01:19:59teaching us that whenever it looks darkest, that is when God appears.
01:20:07Not how we expect, but through ordinary people like you and I,
01:20:15willing to say yes to His extraordinary plan.
01:20:18God's Father.
01:20:19Amen.
01:20:19Amen.
01:20:20Amen.
01:20:21Amen.
01:20:21Amen.
01:20:22Amen.
01:20:22Amen.
01:20:34Amen.
01:20:36Amen.
01:20:36Tonight, as we light our candles,
01:20:56we celebrate that same miracle,
01:21:00the light of Christ that no darkness can overcome,
01:21:04the hope that lives in this church,
01:21:06in each one of us,
01:21:10in the town of Midnight Clear says,
01:21:13Amen.
01:21:17Amen.
01:21:21Amen.
01:21:24It came upon the Midnight Clear
01:21:30That glorious song of old
01:21:36From angels standing near the earth
01:21:43To touch their hearts of gold
01:21:49I'll be right back.
01:22:04Beautiful Christmas Eve service
01:22:14Not a dry eye in the church
01:22:16You good?
01:22:21Yeah, yeah, I just thank you

01:23:22You did
01:23:23But I was hoping you'd consider returning
01:23:26To save places like this

01:23:31I found a new home here in Midnight Clear
01:23:34I'm, I'm, I'm not leaving

01:23:48You were right

01:23:59Midnight Clear is a special place
01:24:02And I'm sorry, Hillary, for not listening
