00:52Today's Red and Blue teams will be searching for collectibles at this antique centre in the Pembrokeshire
00:57town of Narborough. Both teams have £300 to buy three items with only one hour on the clock.
01:03One item must cost at least £75 and there is my challenge to take care of.
01:09Whoever makes the biggest profit or the smallest loss will be crowned the winners.

23:30across the world every culture has its own stories and superstitions passed down through generations
23:40from mythical creatures and local legends to magical men and women and in this part of West Wales folklore
23:48has played an important role in shaping history to find out more I've come to the Carmarthenshire County
23:54Museum to meet folklore expert dr. Owen Williams hi Owen lovely to meet you nice to meet you too thank
24:01you for coming now Owen why do you think folklore has been so important to people in this part of
24:07Wales a lot of these stories around folklore are transmitted through the Welsh language it's one way
24:13of keeping the language alive and part of the intangible heritage that makes this part of the world so
24:19special well when you think of folklore you think of stories and superstitions but it can also be
24:24linked to real physical objects like these can't it objects derive a lot of their meaning from the
24:31stories that are attached to them like this for example it looks like part of a tree this is a fragment
24:38of an oak tree that was planted in nearby Carmarthen town and it's grown to be known as Merlin's Oak by
24:46local people Merlin as in the wizard that's right yes one thing that's been said is that Merlin made
24:54a prophecy about this tree when Merlin's Oak shall tumble down then shall fall Carmarthen town so the
25:02people of Carmarthen thought of it as something sacred but sadly a local man around 1856 decided to
25:11poison the tree because local people used it as a meeting place he lived nearby and got sick of them
25:19discussing their affairs every day and did the tale come true did Carmarthen town fall well thankfully not
25:27Carmarthen is still here luckily now I never knew that Merlin was thought of as being Welsh let alone from
25:34Carmarthen there have been stories dating back over a thousand years that link Merlin to various parts of
25:42Wales but particularly to Carmarthen he would probably have been known more as a physician or a prophet perhaps
25:51but why do we call him a wizard if he was more of a physician or a prophet because he may well have been
25:58somebody who was known as a man of the woods type figure who was able to maybe predict weather patterns
26:07and over time stories got exaggerated and so he became associated with magic because that seemed to
26:14be the only explanation for people back in those times clearly it was a very superstitious time why do you
26:21think that is well at the time of course they didn't have any newspapers or radio so stories were often the
26:28ways in which people came to understand the world and that's how we got the tales of Merlin that we know
26:36so well today were there any folklore beliefs that protected against evil at the time yes there were many for
26:44example this was once known as the magic eye what is it it's actually a potato with matchsticks stuck
26:54into it so what was it actually for well it was actually used to protect crops okay so this was found
27:01in a Carmarthen garden around about 1910 and it was hung over a patch of peas growing there and it was just
27:10believed to have protected them against external threats like insects birds or even bad weather
27:19sort of like a medieval starchy scarecrow that's absolutely right and this object here had a similar
27:26purpose of repelling evil now what is that it looks like hair is it human hair animal it's actually
27:32horse hair horse hair it was found hung up on the back of a door in a local town called
27:40larne only about 20 minutes from here it was said to have been hung at the doorway to protect against
27:48anything evil coming into the property now I'm sensing a theme because you know this is all about
27:54protecting the crops and the home exactly it was incredibly important to people especially in a rural
28:03area like Carmarthenshire now we've talked about these small items but my eyes being drawn to something
28:09magnificent and rather large behind me this cauldron is believed to have dated back at least to the
28:151800s in eastern Carmarthenshire it was used by a local wise woman to create all sorts of herbal remedies
28:26salves balms and tonics now when you say wise woman do you mean a witch well funnily enough no okay there are
28:35actually very few reported incidents of witches in this part of Wales and indeed in Wales in general
28:42women who came up with herbal remedies were known as wise women and they were very well respected within
28:50their communities whereas witches of course were seen as people to be feared oh and thank you so much
28:57for your time I've loved learning about Carmarthens folklore and its medieval beliefs thank you but

29:30silver pin dish 1895 Birmingham silver what do you think it's really pretty very ornate with a nice
29:38pierce decoration there little bonbon dish and there's always a good market for silver in our
29:42auctions sounds good but what's your estimate well we've only put 10 to 15 pound on it okay well the
29:48Reds spent 35 pounds on this I think that's going to be difficult to achieve I have to be honest with
29:54you might be a little lost there more of a retail price I would have thought so yes now the second
29:59item is this quite quirky pair of decorative crown sculptures would you say that they're fashionable they
30:06are we sell a lot of sort of garden and rustic furniture okay so what's your estimate we've put 30 to 40
30:12on them I I do have a feeling that they might make a little bit more than that well that would be good
30:16because this is their big spend okay so 85 pounds they've spent on this yeah yeah you never know you
30:23never know I think it's going to be tough I think it's going to be tough to get that much okay well
30:27fingers crossed so moving on to the last item which is my challenge to buy something containing red
30:32and there's a set of these minikari persian enamo dishes they are predominantly blue but there is enough
30:39red in there to tick the challenge so they've been quite clever here what do you make of them they are they
30:44are quite nice and decorative however there isn't a huge amount of quality to the pieces and they're
30:51quite light okay so what do you think they'll make at auction for the three we've only put 10 to 15
30:56pound on them right well they got the three of them for 20 pounds which sounds good but fingers
31:02crossed we need a bit more don't we yeah we could get there right okay so that is the red team's items
31:08now moving on to the blue we've got Sarah and Pete who are shopping with Izzy and the first item is the
31:14challenge item to buy an item containing blue and we have ironically a red paperweight rabbit but with a
31:21blue pom-pom tail so again they've been creative haven't they I think someone's laughing at my
31:26challenges so what do you think of the rabbit I think it's quite sweet actually there's not much
31:31age to it little modern art class paperweight or desk weight whatever you want to call it what
31:36do you think it will make at auction we've put a guide price of 20 to 30 pound on the rabbit right
31:41well that's good they only spent nine pounds on it right so you can't really go wrong with it can you
31:46they will definitely make a profit on that fabulous now this second item is my favorite because I'm a
31:52cat lover it says 20th century ceramic study of a seated cat it's looking very peaceful and serene
31:58don't you think it's a good size and it's got this nice sort of salad and glaze which is always
32:03popular so yeah I think I should do all right as a decorative piece so what's your estimate for
32:08mr. cat we've put 15 to 20 on the cart okay well it costs 25 pounds which I think is doable for a
32:14profit we're almost there okay the final item is a bit of blacksmith salvage in the form of this
32:20bench it's a really nice piece it's industrial but it would also fit into other interiors as well
32:25okay in terms of money how do you think it will do well again a difficult thing to value it's quite
32:30bespoke there's not many others around so we put 30 to 50 on it okay well this was the blues big spend
