00:00So it's about keeping the spirit of Christmas alive 365 days a year.
00:06The Hallmark Christmas movie is a bonafide modern cable TV phenomenon.
00:11These films drew a whopping 85 million viewers in 2018 and air 24-7 on the Hallmark channel
00:17starting even before Halloween.
00:20And that's the story of the Merry and Bright Candy Cane Company, as both your tour guide
00:24and CEO of the company, who wants a candy cane?
00:27You might have seen the Hallmark Christmas movie formula recently parodied on SNL.
00:31Well, that's right, the true reason for Christmas is husband.
00:35Hello, I'm Prince Simon of Caucasia.
00:38Or you might have read about the Hallmark channel that airs these movies,
00:42as this conservative-leaning network, which aspires to be non-divisive,
00:46seems to have a knack for attracting controversy.
00:49So what is the Hallmark Christmas movie craze all about?
00:52You always make Christmas awesome.
00:54Here's our guide to the trademarks of this unique format,
00:57and why it's become such a potent and complicated cultural obsession.
01:01When I was a kid, I'd imagine a place like this.
01:04And you found it.
01:07I did.

01:30You know you're watching a Hallmark Christmas movie if...
01:34The world is idealized and only interested in Christmas.
01:38In the world of Hallmark Christmas movies, the only thing that matters is the Christmas season.
01:45Yeah, my mom goes all out.
01:47I mean, getting ready for Christmas is half the fun.
01:49In reality, the holiday season unfolds as we juggle end-of-year work responsibilities
01:55and a packed social calendar.
01:57But politics, pop culture, sports, the news cycle...
02:00None of these things exist in the Hallmark Christmas movie world,
02:04much less cause stress.
02:05White, fluffy snow is everywhere.
02:08The halls are decked with every Christmas decoration imaginable.
02:11And the films take place in idyllic small towns with whimsical names such as Angel Falls or Evergreen.
02:18And that is how Grandin Falls got our nickname, Christmastime.
02:22At its core, the Hallmark Christmas movie is aspirational.
02:26I mean, this could turn out to be better than both of us ever hoped.
02:30The Hallmark Christmas movie echoes and preserves the joy and innocence many of us felt
02:35as starry-eyed children celebrating Christmas.
02:38I love the holidays.
02:40Just talking about it gets me feeling like a kid on Christmas morning.
02:43And you know I'm like a little kid on Christmas morning.
02:46The Hallmark movie world is a way to become that kid again,
02:50to feel reassured that the spirit of the season is alive and well.
02:54It has the Hallmark Christmas movie plot.
02:57A woman facing relatable stressors, problems with her job,
03:01heading to her hometown to celebrate the holidays,
03:04being single around the holidays, eventually finds a picture-perfect romance.
03:09You don't know what I'm thinking.
03:10But I'm the jerk who wanted to kiss you when I'm meant to be getting married.
03:14So you do know what I'm thinking?
03:15There's some variation, but the most popular Hallmark Christmas movies
03:19boil down to a spin on this formula.
03:21I don't think anything can make this more romantic.
03:26I can think of something.
03:29Given the sheer number of these movies that Hallmark creates,
03:32it's no surprise they're sometimes criticized for plagiarizing their own previous plots.
03:38Multiple films find people hiring a fake boyfriend or girlfriend to save face during the holidays.
03:44What do I search under? Freelance fake girlfriends?
03:48And then romance blossoms between the two.
03:51Several movies feature a benevolent Santa-like figure who serves as a matchmaker.
03:55Did you ask for something special?
03:58I asked for true love.
03:59Works of great literature also get the Hallmark treatment.
04:02Past movies have put a modern spin on A Christmas Carol or Cinderella's Rags to Riches story.
04:07What a warm greeting.
04:09Yes. Tragically, it's not for you.
04:11The service entrance, please, Thomas.
04:13Familiarity gives these films a distinct emotional advantage.
04:18Part of the Hallmark Christmas movie appeal is that it's reliable.
04:22Academic Robert Thompson notes,
04:24No matter what the state of the economy, no matter what the state of chaos or stability,
04:28there is an extraordinary appetite for simple, cheesy, unsophisticated, easy-to-watch programming.
04:35Compared to everything you imagined?
04:39Of course, a simple plot doesn't have to mean predictable.
04:42Besides, it's Christmas Eve, right? And anything can happen.
04:46The Hallmark Christmas movie is full of surprises.
04:49One blessed shepherd will bring a flock together.
04:52Terry Polo stars in The Christmas Shepherd.
04:56Expect some curveballs that require suspension of disbelief.
04:59A woman might discover her boyfriend is part of a royal family.
05:03Are you married?
05:04No, I'm a prince.
05:07Or sparks could fly between two friends thanks to a plotline involving adorable cats.
05:13Hey, it's you.
05:14You might be lost.
05:16The film might judiciously employ magical realism.
05:20Why did you draw Carrie as an angel?
05:21Because she is an angel, Dad.
05:23In one movie, a guardian angel named Gabby falls for a handsome human,
05:27which is apparently against the rules.
05:29Every time I see that look, I wonder what that feels like to fall in love.
05:34Another memorable film finds Kris Kringle hauled into court by an entitled adult
05:39who's still mad he didn't receive everything on his Christmas list.
05:43And I'm here because somebody is suing me.
05:45And in many of these movies, Santa Claus, or at least a jolly bearded man who looks suspiciously
05:51like Saint Nick, lives among us as a mere mortal.
05:54The 2010 film Cancel Christmas, for example, has a Christmas board of directors that threatens to
06:00nix the holidays unless Santa, played by Judd Nelson of The Breakfast Club, convinces a trio of
06:06children to give up their selfish ways.
06:08You see familiar faces.
06:10Lacey Chabert is the undisputed Hallmark movie queen.
06:15As of 2019, the Mean Girls actress has been in a whopping 17 films for the channel.
06:20She's showed off her acting range by portraying a variety of characters.
06:25A timid woman who's emboldened thanks to Santa Claus.
06:28I think I would wish to have courage for a change.
06:30Or a pastry chef who reconnects with an ex after borrowing his oven to try and
06:35win a gingerbread bake-off.
06:37I have to win this contest if I'm going to start my cake business.
06:39Paul Green, a Canadian actor known mostly for his guest starring roles on various TV shows,
06:45has found his niche in multiple movies playing a handsome, kind, crush object.
06:50Is everything okay?
06:51And for 80s and 90s sitcom actresses especially,
06:55Hallmark Christmas movies have provided a serious career boost.
06:59Full House's DJ Tanner, Candace Cameron Bure, reliably stars in a film a year.
07:05She's played a Grinch-like resort developer.
07:07Besides us backs, we're never big on Christmas anyway.
07:09Who learns to embrace the holiday.
07:11Just never imagined there could be so much magic in Christmas.
07:15Or a harried traveler whose love life is thrown a curveball due to travel woes.
07:20Jack, I'm sorry. I can't do this. It just doesn't feel right anymore.
07:25Danica McKellar, aka The Wonder Year's brainy romantic lead Winnie Cooper,
07:30has also become a Hallmark favorite.
07:32In Crown for Christmas, she starred as a nanny who inadvertently falls for a king
07:37who's set to marry someone else.
07:39What's she doing? She's a governess.
07:41Not tonight.
07:42There's something comforting about seeing beloved actors we grew up with
07:46appearing in holiday movies.
07:48Like when Dean Cain, who portrayed hunky Clark Kent in the 90s romantic drama
07:53Lois and Clark, The New Adventures of Superman,
07:56plays a lawyer repping Santa.
07:58Uh, yeah. Yeah, I've been practicing for two years.
08:01As Hallmark Christmas films have grown in popularity,
08:04the caliber of celebrities appearing in films has skyrocketed.
08:07The queen of Christmas herself, Mariah Carey, starred in and directed A Christmas Melody,
08:13playing a snobby PTA president who gets competitive over a Christmas pageant.
08:18That's my little superstar.
08:20Now get out there and kill it for mommy!
08:22In 2019, Broadway Wicked star Kristen Chenoweth led a movie in which she portrays
08:28a choir director who discovers a potential genius talent.
08:31Yes!
08:32Oh, it's beautiful.
08:36While Dolly Parton and Danica McKellar star in the sparkling love story Christmas at Dollywood.
08:42You can have what you want if you believe you can have it.
08:44Worth to live by.
08:45It brings people together.
08:48Every premiere has its own Twitter hashtag,
08:51and there are multiple Facebook groups devoted to dissecting and sharing the love for these films.
08:56There's even a Christmas con.
08:58Call it a more festive version of Comic-Con.
09:01It feels like a throwback.
09:03Hallmark Christmas movies call back to the 70s and 80s,
09:06when TV movies were must-watches due to who acted in them.
09:10Linda Carter and a world premiere movie born to be sold.
09:13Mariah Carey and Hallmark Channel come together for a special holiday movie event.
09:18Today's your lucky day.
09:19But even more than that,
09:20they're nods to the chaste fare found on TV in the 50s and 60s,
09:25saccharine if not somewhat sanitized content with a feel-good message that's family-centric
09:30and conservative-leaning.
09:32The Hallmark Channel occasionally finds itself mired in controversy,
09:36despite explicitly asserting that it's trying not to be political.
09:40After the group One Million Moms recently protested a commercial featuring two brides kissing,
09:46Hallmark angered the LGBTQ community and allies by pulling the ads,
09:51before apologizing and reinstating the commercials.
09:54Their statement initially defending their decision to pull the Zola ads read,
09:58The Hallmark brand is never going to be divisive.
10:01We don't want to generate controversy.
10:03We've tried very hard to stay out of it.
10:06Ironically, staying out of it is a political stance,
10:09and the Hallmark Channel repeatedly attracts criticism
10:12by trying to preserve its wholesome reputation
10:15through avoiding anything potentially controversial.
10:18In recent years, it's been pointed out that their movies
10:20lack same-sex couples and ethnic diversity.
10:24I'm Emily Kringle for Hallmark, reminding you to stay straight out there.
10:28Executives at the channel say that they are making moves to address the imbalance.
10:32In terms of broadening out the demographic, it's something we're always thinking about,
10:37always considering.
10:38To date, however, Hallmark's moves toward inclusivity have been hit or miss.
10:43Although Holly Robinson-Pete, who is Black, has become an integral part of Hallmark programming,
10:49two 2019 films referencing Hanukkah were criticized for reinforcing negative stereotypes.
10:55On a more positive note, women's experiences are consistently centered and honored.
11:00Women are at the center of every storyline, and they aren't shamed for their career choices or romantic moves.
11:07I mean, when it's meant to be, it's meant to be.
11:11Viewers can see themselves in the lead female characters who tend to be resilient and ambitious,
11:17despite having some everyday bumps in the road.
11:19And this draws a big female audience.
11:22The Hallmark Channel was the highest rated and most watched network on ad-supported cable television,
11:28for women between the ages of 25 and 54 during the last three months of the year in both 2017 and 2018.
11:36It has a happy and chaste ending.
11:39Hallmark Christmas movies are guaranteed to deliver warm and fuzzy conclusions.
11:44Do you know where a lady can grab a decent Christmas dinner around here?
11:49Maybe, but it'll cost you.
11:50How much?
11:51Just one little kiss.
11:55And these endings are firmly and decidedly PG rated,
11:58largely comprising an embrace and a passionate kiss.
12:02Now Lauren, whoever you pick will join you in the Hallmark Gazebo suite,
12:07where you will share a single dry kiss.
12:10At the end of the day, these films offer exactly the ending fans came for, each and every time.
12:16If only our regular world could be so dependable.
12:19Are we soulmates?
12:21I don't know.
12:23But if you're willing to take a chance, I'd love to find out.
