In his small North Carolina hometown, Ron Clark (Matthew Perry) leads a comfortable life as a successful elementary school teacher, earning the respect of the community. However, he knows there are students elsewhere who need him more. Following his inner calling, Clark uproots to New York City, hoping to make a difference for the disenfranchised youths the school system has left behind. Clark makes it his mission to turn around the worst students, even though he knows his job is on the line.

00:00:00Ron Clark, ready for your first date?
00:00:11Yes, ma'am.
00:00:12I'll be with you in a minute, and I'll introduce you to your class.
00:00:28Hi.
00:00:30What happened to you?
00:00:34He just says I can't learn, so I should go out with the trash.
00:00:38Okay, settle down.
00:00:39Let's get out our silent reading.
00:00:48I'm Mr. Clark.
00:00:49What's your name?
00:00:51Hadley Craig.
00:00:53Nice to meet you.
00:00:54Walter, elbows off your desk.
00:00:58You know, I'm so sorry.
00:01:00I'm so forgetful.
00:01:01What's my name again?
00:01:03It's Mr. Clark.
00:01:04Oh, see?
00:01:05You just learned something.
00:01:07Let's get you out of there.
00:01:09Mr. Clark?
00:01:13Yeah?
00:01:14Is you going to be our new teacher?
00:01:16Ellen, no whisper.
00:01:17We'll arrive at Swan Quarter about five, like we always do.
00:01:33Pick up the shrimp bait at the general store, like we always do, and hop the ferry over to Ocacoke Island for some fine flounder fishing.
00:01:42Like we always do.
00:01:43Well, folks, it's not quite the end-of-the-year summer celebration we expected, but let's take a moment to thank our own Mr. Clark, whose fifth-grade class tested number one in Beaufort County for the fourth year in a row.
00:02:00We have a surprise that we have put together for you.
00:02:05Unfortunately, it's outside.
00:02:07You all know Mr. Clark began here as a temporary teacher.
00:02:22Well, we've all chipped in on something to help him feel more permanent.
00:02:37I love it here, but I've got to move on, Mom, before they use that parking space for my grave.
00:02:56New York public schools are desperate for good teachers.
00:02:59Newspaper says they're begging for them.
00:03:02Dad, every year I tell my students to go for what they want in life.
00:03:06Dream big, take risks.
00:03:08It's time I started living up to my own words.
00:03:11Oh.
00:03:12I'm going to miss you guys, but I've got to go.
00:03:15We understand, sweetie.
00:03:20Goodbye.
00:03:24People get killed in New York.
00:03:36This is Radio Roanoke, where the sun is shining, and the temperature is 78 degrees.
00:03:49And the night sounds start to whisper.
00:03:53News and sports in five, Baltimore, but now let's get ready to rock and roll with the smoke and red.
00:03:59That was the mellow midnight voice of Johnny Hartman.
00:04:02This is WNYC in New York City.
00:04:05Next up, something cool on a hot night.
00:04:08Come on, pal, get out of the way!
00:04:22Okay, yes sir, sir.
00:04:23Come on, I'm trying to rock here!
00:04:25Rent's due at ten.
00:04:28Cash only.
00:04:29Checkout's at 11.30.
00:04:31Okay, this is great.
00:04:33And, uh, what's your name?
00:04:36Yolanda.
00:04:36Thank you, Yolanda.
00:04:41Oi!
00:05:00Ah, New York.
00:05:06Good morning.
00:05:16Good morning.
00:05:19Yolanda, good morning.
00:05:21Do you have a list of the public schools in Harlem?
00:05:23Sure I do, baby.
00:05:29Okay, thank you.
00:05:30What do you want school listings for?
00:05:34I'm a teacher.
00:05:37And you want to teach?
00:05:39Up in Harlem?
00:05:41Yes.
00:05:42Well then, honey, you're going to need something else.
00:05:44Personal injury lawyers.
00:05:46Because once your way behind goes on up in there,
00:05:48they'll be carrying you back up the same way you went in.
00:05:50What kind of foolishness is this going on up there to Harlem trying to teach?
00:05:53You know I ain't going to get to be...
00:05:54Okay, thank you.
00:05:55Bye, you back.
00:05:56Bye, baby.
00:05:59Kevin!
00:06:01Bye, man!
00:06:01This way, son.
00:06:02This way, son.
00:06:06Yeah, I'm coming in.
00:06:07Yeah, I'm coming in.
00:06:09Go away, son!
00:06:10Go away, son!
00:06:16Thank you so much for coming in.
00:06:17You're welcome.
00:06:18If you could just look at my resume.
00:06:20I apologize.
00:06:20We just don't have a position available.
00:06:22I thought all my kids tested above grade level.
00:06:24I'm sure they did.
00:06:26And good luck to you.
00:06:50So, my merry men and ladies,
00:07:11let us steal from the rich
00:07:12and help a poor, brave waiter
00:07:14go henceforth into the kitchen
00:07:15and command your dinners.
00:07:17Nice hat.
00:07:19Distracts the customers from that accent.
00:07:21Hey, watch out.
00:07:21I've got a bow and arrow.
00:07:23What show are you in?
00:07:24Everybody works here as an actor.
00:07:25I'm a teacher.
00:07:26You are going to change before you post class, right?
00:07:28Very funny.
00:07:30How about you?
00:07:31Me?
00:07:31Oh, I'm taking a break from acting.
00:07:33The Cleopatra gig is very challenging.
00:07:37Hey, but who's that?
00:07:39It's the Queen of Egypt.
00:07:40In love with Mark Antony.
00:07:42No, I...
00:07:44I mean, uh, who is that?
00:07:46Marissa.
00:07:47And she's even more beautiful out of costume.
00:07:49I'm Jason.
00:07:51Otherwise known as...
00:07:53Mark Antony.
00:07:56Sorry.
00:07:57It happens all the time, bro.
00:07:58Don't sweat it.
00:07:59Get them fake heels out of mine.
00:08:10Oh, come on, man.
00:08:15Get back in the cliff.
00:08:16Hey, hey, hey.
00:08:19Hey, hey, hey.
00:08:20Hey, hey, hey.
00:08:23Enough!
00:08:25Hey, Sean Mitchell.
00:08:25My office now.
00:08:28I'm not playing with your son.
00:08:34I ain't no son.
00:08:37Mrs. Sauce.
00:08:38What the hell was that?
00:08:39That boy's your student.
00:08:41Not anymore.
00:08:41Hey, you walk away, you stay away.
00:08:47You can have the little bastards.
00:08:50I can start right now.
00:09:01You're lucky you got detention and not an assault charge.
00:09:04Hello, I'm Ron Clark.
00:09:13I wanted to let you know I taught fifth grade for four years in North Carolina.
00:09:17You need a teacher, I need a job, so let's help each other out.
00:09:20Mr. Clark, I'm sure you're very sincere, but I'm afraid you might be a little too...
00:09:24Too what?
00:09:24Too white?
00:09:25Too tall?
00:09:25Too ugly?
00:09:27Nice.
00:09:27I specialize in raising standardized test scores.
00:09:35This is the honors class.
00:09:37These students score in the top ten percentile of the state exams every year.
00:09:42We divide each grade into four classes according to their achievement scores.
00:09:47What about this class?
00:09:51This class tested at the bottom of the entire New York City School district.
00:09:56They do seem a little bit squirrely.
00:09:59Oh, they're a bit more than squirrely.
00:10:01These students have problems with learning, discipline, social skills, like Tayshaun Mitchell.
00:10:08Two strikes going on three towards the juvenile detention center.
00:10:13I'm your man.
00:10:16I have an opening in grade three.
00:10:18If your credentials check out...
00:10:19You have an opening right here.
00:10:21No.
00:10:22Last year, this class went through six different teachers before Christmas.
00:10:25Yes, nobody wants them, and I do.
00:10:27So, what's the problem?
00:10:30Test scores are very important to me.
00:10:32It's how I keep my job.
00:10:34I can start right now.
00:10:37You can start on Monday.
00:10:41State exams are in May.
00:10:45Yo, man!
00:10:46I think she liked me.
00:10:58High five, bro.
00:10:59I want a break.
00:11:01Ugh!
00:11:02Ugh!
00:11:03Ugh!
00:11:05Two hundred bucks!
00:11:06And nothing!
00:11:08Jeez, you should have heard them in there.
00:11:10Oh, Cleo, we got your snake right here.
00:11:12And then they just stiffed me.
00:11:18Want a half?
00:11:19Yeah, sure.
00:11:22You're a teacher, Clark.
00:11:23What is it?
00:11:24I mean, why don't guys grow up?
00:11:26Ooh, I'm afraid my level of expertise expires in the sixth grade.
00:11:29You got a job.
00:11:33Inner Harlem Elementary.
00:11:35I'm going to start meeting my kids tomorrow.
00:11:38Uh, you might want to hold on to this.
00:11:40Maybe your last meal.
00:11:42Nah, they're going to love me.
00:11:43I'd like to meet all the parents, Miss Vasquez, before I start teaching.
00:11:57Julio?
00:11:58To get them involved.
00:12:00Julio!
00:12:01I've never met.
00:12:03Who is he?
00:12:05He a clown, Mr. Clark.
00:12:08But he's a good boy.
00:12:10I had him when I was only 14.
00:12:11That's okay.
00:12:13Like, like I was saying.
00:12:15What?
00:12:16I was just saying.
00:12:19You can help out by working with Julio every night on his homework.
00:12:22Sure.
00:12:23Okay.
00:12:24Together, we can get him excited about learning.
00:12:27American history.
00:12:32Solar system.
00:12:34Pre-algebra.
00:12:34I just want Julio to achieve his full potential.
00:12:44So, Mr. Clark, are you married?
00:12:49No.
00:12:50It's very nice to meet you all, today.
00:13:02You know, I've never had a student from India before.
00:13:04How do you pronounce your name?
00:13:06Badstia.
00:13:08I like to read, especially when I...
00:13:09Quiet, lady.
00:13:11Men are talking, okay?
00:13:13Okay.
00:13:13Okay.
00:13:13Watch out.
00:13:21Watch out.
00:13:26Watch out.
00:13:32They don't need...
00:13:33Shemeika Wallace?
00:13:45I'm Mr. Clark, your new teacher.
00:13:47I called earlier.
00:13:48It's Saturday, fool.
00:13:49Shemeika, who is it?
00:13:51Nobody.
00:13:53Oh, aren't those your brothers?
00:13:55No.
00:13:55They're my kids.
00:13:57I'm 12 years old, and I got three kids.
00:13:59Who are you talking to?
00:14:01I'm Mr. Clark, Shemeika's new teacher.
00:14:03What the hell happened to Mr. Solis?
00:14:05Fooled quick.
00:14:06He's wet.
00:14:08I swear to God, your teachers come in and out of this school.
00:14:11Yeah, I know that.
00:14:12That's why I'm here.
00:14:13I was hoping you would work with me.
00:14:14I already got a job, mister.
00:14:16I got two jobs, and four kids, and a brother on parole.
00:14:20I'm late for work.
00:14:26That's that.
00:14:27Gonna make a man out of you, Jack.
00:14:29I get you a scream and demand you respect with the left.
00:14:32How can I respect you?
00:14:33Lay another hand on my mom's me, give me a drop down.
00:14:36It's always gone, it's another shot to the soul.
00:14:39Tell me, what can I do when 13 years old?
00:14:41If I lay a hand on my child, don't come and get me.
00:14:44If I can, I'm drunk and fuck while I freak out.
00:14:46And then I try to hold the tears back.
00:14:48Listen, I gave you satisfaction.
00:14:50You hear me asking and banging.
00:14:51Please walk down on my knees.
00:14:53Let me tell me that it's gonna be while I'm leaving.
00:14:55Hey, that's enough, get moving.
00:15:23Good morning.
00:15:25Nice to see you, Tayshon.
00:15:35Oh, hello. I'm Ron Clark.
00:15:37I guess I'll be teaching you.
00:15:53Oh, she is.
00:15:55I know.
00:15:57You dream big about what?
00:15:59Big Bits?
00:16:01You dream about your mama.
00:16:05Take your seats.
00:16:07Yo, teacher. Shemika's feeling sick today.
00:16:09Yeah, sick of damn teachers.
00:16:15Okay, because this is our first day,
00:16:19I have a surprise for all of you.
00:16:21What?
00:16:22I'll tell you, Julio, if you turn around.
00:16:27Today, there will be no school work.
00:16:34Shemika, don't do that.
00:16:41Shemika, don't.
00:16:43Well, what?
00:16:44What are you going to do? Suspend me?
00:16:46Go ahead, suspend me. I want to leave.
00:16:48You don't want to leave.
00:16:50Hey, look, the fool's leaving already.
00:17:00Sit down.
00:17:02You see this?
00:17:12This means that this year is going to be different.
00:17:14This year is going to be about more than school.
00:17:16This year we are going to be a family.
00:17:20But you don't look nothing like me.
00:17:22I am going to be your family, and you are going to be my family, and that means that I am not leaving.
00:17:32And you are not leaving.
00:17:44Do you have any lip gloss?
00:17:46This is going to be a family.
00:17:48she is going to be them.
00:17:52I am not leaving.
00:17:54I am not leaving.
00:17:56I am not leaving.
00:17:58I am not leaving.
00:18:00Don't shoot it!
00:18:26Don't shoot it!
00:18:28What the hell?
00:18:35Blue.
00:18:36Well, what do you think?
00:18:48We think it looks stupid.
00:18:50Who vandalized this room?
00:18:56I did, sir.
00:18:58Mr. Clark, this sort of stunned me of going over being an Aurora, but it doesn't work for
00:19:06me.
00:19:07My school, my rules, my way.
00:19:16Oh, put your gum in here.
00:19:24All the gum in this jar, the gum jar.
00:19:25Come on.
00:19:26Come on.
00:19:28Right in here.
00:19:29Hey, no, I see you.
00:19:30Come on.
00:19:31Right in there.
00:19:41Okay, to your left, left, more left.
00:19:50They're just testing you.
00:19:52They want to see if you really care.
00:19:54See if I care.
00:19:55They weren't even looking at me.
00:19:56Well, one of them was.
00:19:57But I think he was picturing me in a dark alley.
00:19:58We have to turn this.
00:19:59Ow!
00:20:00Ow!
00:20:01Ow!
00:20:02Do these legs come down?
00:20:03All right.
00:20:04I think it looks good right there.
00:20:05You know, school's supposed to be exciting.
00:20:06Okay.
00:20:07Now you sound like one of those dumbass commercials that used to come on at the cartoons on Saturday
00:20:12morning.
00:20:13So, what?
00:20:14You didn't like school?
00:20:15School sucked.
00:20:16I hated it.
00:20:17Yeah, well, if I was your teacher, you would have loved it.
00:20:20Ron, just relax.
00:20:21I'm sorry.
00:20:22I'm sorry.
00:20:23I'm sorry.
00:20:24I'm sorry.
00:20:25I'm sorry.
00:20:26I'm sorry.
00:20:27I'm sorry.
00:20:28I'm sorry.
00:20:29I'm sorry.
00:20:30I'm sorry.
00:20:31I'm sorry.
00:20:32I'm sorry.
00:20:33I'm sorry.
00:20:34I'm sorry.
00:20:35Yes.
00:20:36Step away from the table.
00:20:42Yeah, that's what I was doing.
00:20:48So, now that you've helped me move, I guess I have to be your drive-you-to-the-airport,
00:20:52feed-your-fish-never-forget-your-birthday kind of friend.
00:20:55Not to mention my cover-my-weekend shift because I'm going to L.A. with Jason Friend.
00:21:00He's gonna meet some producers.
00:21:02You know, he's trying to get out of the daytime heartthrob thing.
00:21:05So, how long have you two been going out?
00:21:08Almost two years.
00:21:11Oh.
00:21:13I mean, we're not living together or anything.
00:21:16He's busy.
00:21:17I'm busy.
00:21:19But it's good.
00:21:20Yeah, it sounds good.
00:21:21All right.
00:21:22Well, we've got three hours before our shift.
00:21:25Who's hungry?
00:21:26Oh, so you're a union mover.
00:21:28This is gonna cost me a pizza, huh?
00:21:30Uh-huh.
00:21:33Can I have your attention, please?
00:21:36Before we start today, I would like to go over three rules for this class.
00:21:41If you follow them, we will all have a lot of fun.
00:21:44If you do not follow them, there will be consequences.
00:21:48You all remember rule number one, we are a family.
00:21:55Give me a damn break, man.
00:21:57We're not in kindergarten.
00:21:58That means we help each other out.
00:22:00We stand up for each other.
00:22:02We defend each other.
00:22:05Rule number two, we respect each other.
00:22:10Hey, you will call me sir.
00:22:13Not man, not dog, not fool.
00:22:16If you are asked a question, you will say yes, sir, or no, sir.
00:22:20Not yep, nope, uh-uh, nuh-uh.
00:22:24Uh, nuh-uh, fool.
00:22:25Respect, Julio Vasquez.
00:22:28You will not talk unless I call on you.
00:22:30If I am talking, you are listening with your eyes right here.
00:22:37Rule number three, we will form a line to enter and exit class and go to lunch.
00:22:43Come on.
00:22:44Are you kidding me?
00:22:46Shemeika?
00:22:47What?
00:22:49What, sir?
00:22:52Oh, Shemeika, thank you.
00:22:54For what?
00:22:55Reminding me about rule number four.
00:22:57No smacking of lips and rolling of the eyes.
00:23:00If you break one of these rules, your name will go up on the board.
00:23:05So stupid.
00:23:07If you break another rule, you will get a check.

00:43:00Well, I'm certainly not going to double-dutch with you.
00:43:12These kids are at the bottom of the barrel.
00:43:16Don't talk about them like that.
00:43:18Now, all I'm asking is for your students to pass.
00:43:21Oh, every one of my students will pass.
00:43:23What?
00:43:24I'm not gonna pass.
00:43:25Good.
00:43:26They can become somebody else's problems.
00:43:27The problem isn't the kids.
00:43:29It's not even what they can achieve.
00:43:30The problem is what you expect them to achieve.
00:43:34You are setting the bar here.
00:43:36Why?
00:43:37Set it up here.
00:43:38They can make it.
00:43:39This community judges us by scores.
00:43:41Government funding judges us by scores.
00:43:43People who give me scores, they get my respect.
00:43:45Okay.
00:43:46Good.
00:43:47In May, they'll all test at grade level.
00:43:49I don't see how this is possible.
00:43:51I'm sorry.
00:43:52Did I say grade level?
00:43:53I meant above grade level.
00:43:55Every single one of those kids in that class just wants your respect.
00:43:59Well, I want your respect.
00:44:00You want my respect?
00:44:01Stop acting like a 12-year-old.
00:44:05I always wanted to go rock climbing.
00:44:07But there I was on the edge of this cliff.
00:44:10Ropes on me.
00:44:11And my friends are yelling, jump, jump, jump.
00:44:13And I look down.
00:44:15And it is a long way down.
00:44:19So I'm on the cliff and I'm yelling, I can't, I can't, I can't.
00:44:23And my friends are yelling, yes, you can.
00:44:24You can do it.
00:44:25Jump, jump, jump.
00:44:26And I did.
00:44:29I thought I was going to die.
00:44:32But when I jumped out, it felt like I was flying.
00:44:39I did something that I never thought I could do.
00:44:42And it was pretty cool.
00:44:44Now, you guys may not know this, but in this classroom,
00:44:47we're rock climbing every day.
00:44:49We're climbing up and up and up, and we are there.
00:44:52And now it's time to jump.
00:44:57Now, I know you're scared, but I want you to do it.
00:45:01I want you to jump.
00:45:03I want you guys to feel what it's like to fly.
00:45:10So, I want each of you to come up here and light one of these candles.
00:45:16Okay, come on up, guys.
00:45:19And when you light a candle, it symbolizes that we are joined together.
00:45:24And if you trust me,
00:45:27you can learn more than you ever dreamed of.
00:45:31And that's a promise.
00:45:33He's on the phone.
00:45:35I have a promise.
00:45:38You can hear me.

00:45:45I can hear you.
00:45:46I can hear you.
00:45:50The Revolutionary War, Industrialism, the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement.
00:46:13I want you all to get the great big picture of American history.
00:46:18That's why this year we're going to learn all 42 presidents of the United States in order.
00:46:25No, no, no. Once you know the president, it'll be easy to remember what and when.
00:46:44Come on.
00:46:48None of you passed the test. And there is going to be punishment.
00:47:01I want you to pass these all around.
00:47:14Now let's get down to some presidential learning. We'll start with George Washington straight from Mount Vernon.
00:47:31First president and commander in chief fought the Revolutionary War so we could be free.
00:47:36John Adams was second, Thomas Jefferson third. When we fought for independence, their voices were heard.
00:47:44When in the course of human events, we took a stand and we've been doing it since.
00:47:49It's a tribute to the leaders of the USA. It's the president's rap. All right. All right. Okay. Okay.
00:48:02It's a tribute to the leaders of the USA. It's the president's rap. All right. All right. Okay. Okay.
00:48:15All right. Back to your seats. Back, back, back to your seats.
00:48:30Back to your seats. Back to your seats.
00:48:32Back to your seats.
00:48:33Back to your seats.

00:48:57Thank you, Mr. Clark.
00:48:59Oh, my God, you're going to be too.
00:49:05Now, give it up for your sizzle-selves.
00:49:09It's okay to be proud of yourself for doing well on a test.
00:49:13Come on, come on, let's go.
00:49:15Oh, my God, so big up. Number 13, right?
00:49:19Can you hold up for a minute?

00:49:33I believe this constitutes an illegal search, sir.

00:49:54No, I don't.
00:49:55But you've got to tell me that crime doesn't pay.
00:49:57Sometimes it costs.

00:51:11If you bring up your math and English with some extra help.
00:51:16Tomorrow's Saturday, I can meet you at the coffee shop by the school.
00:51:20I'll buy you lunch.
00:51:28I'll be there at noon.
00:51:30Noon.
00:51:31Can I take that now?
00:51:38I'm glad he didn't show up.
00:51:52Here I am, not even two o'clock.
00:51:56Here I am. I'm not even two o'clock. I'm early, sir.
00:52:01Down for study session numero tres.
00:52:14Okay. Then we get three cards up on the fly.
00:52:18And then we get another two cards up.
00:52:20Okay, so that's five cards up. Can you add those for me?
00:52:23Yeah, we gotta bet first.
00:52:24I bet five fake dollars.
00:52:28Well, I'll call.
00:52:31And that's 36.
00:52:33That's good. Now, what's the square root of that?
00:52:38Oh, square root. Okay, I think the square root is...
00:52:41What number multiplied by itself gives you 36?
00:52:46Uh, six?
00:52:49That's good.
00:52:51So what you got?
00:52:53Pair of sevens.
00:52:54Well, I guess I get all the chips because I got three cents.
00:52:57Oh, pay up, dog.
00:52:59Want to go again?
00:53:00Yeah, sure.
00:53:01You all right?
00:53:07Shameika Wallace, didn't we have an appointment after school today?
00:53:11It must have slipped my mind.
00:53:12We have to talk about you turning in your homework.
00:53:15I told you.
00:53:17The fire alarm keeps going off in my building.
00:53:19Three times this week?
00:53:21I get busy.
00:53:22Forget.
00:53:29Last night, I just didn't do a good enough job.
00:53:32Would you like to show me your homework?
00:53:34I'm sure I can help you with it.
00:53:35This is really close.
00:53:48We can fix this.
00:53:50Yeah?
00:53:52For reals?
00:53:53Sure.
00:53:53We can work on it right now.
00:53:55There's a few spelling mistakes.
00:53:56And just arrange some of the paragraphs different.
00:53:59Yeah.
00:53:59He's been so too fussy all day.
00:54:10I think maybe he's been a fever.
00:54:13Okay.
00:54:14Thank you, Mrs. Benton.
00:54:17Mr. Clark, I can't work on my paper right now.
00:54:19I gotta go make dinner.
00:54:21I'll do it.
00:54:23You'll do what?
00:54:24I'll make dinner and you work on your paper.
00:54:27Oh.
00:54:27Okay?
00:54:28Okay.
00:54:28Let's start with the third paragraph.
00:54:30Hi.
00:54:32Okay.
00:54:33Where's the food?
00:54:39Dinner's served.
00:54:40I'm trying to concentrate.
00:54:42Concentrate later.
00:54:43Dinner's served.
00:54:46I tried like you said.
00:54:47I moved the third paragraph and it sounds really good.
00:54:51Okay.
00:54:52Now, that's for you.
00:54:53And who gets the baby food?
00:54:55Peter.
00:54:56Okay.
00:54:56You're gonna like this.
00:54:57This looks really good.
00:55:04What's he doing here?
00:55:07He made us dinner.
00:55:10You don't think I can take care of my family, Mr. Clark?
00:55:12No.
00:55:14No.
00:55:14Yes.
00:55:19Please.
00:55:21Leave my house.
00:55:21I come home to find him in my kitchen, cooking for my family.
00:55:41This girl has a job to do.
00:55:42Miss Wallace, can we please not talk about Shamika like she's not in the room?
00:55:45I'll talk any way I want.
00:55:47Now, I send my daughter to school to be educated.
00:55:48I don't expect a teacher to bring school up in my house.
00:55:51It's called homework.
00:55:53Excuse me?
00:55:54She has too much of it to be babysitting all the time.
00:55:57Mr. Clark.
00:55:58Shamika has more potential than any kid in my class.
00:56:01Why can't you see that?
00:56:03How dare you?
00:56:04How are you gonna tell me what I should and should not see in my daughter?
00:56:06I'm merely suggesting that you give her a chance.
00:56:14I'm taking my child home now.
00:56:16The white tornado here better not be teaching at this school when I bring her back tomorrow.
00:56:19Miss Wallace, I can assure you I will deal with this situation.
00:56:23Come on, Shamika.
00:56:25Please don't fire Mr. Clark.
00:56:29He was just trying to help me, Mama.
00:56:32He was just trying to help.
00:56:33It's okay.
00:56:36Please don't leave because of me, Mr. Clark.
00:56:55Miss Wallace, wait.
00:56:57I'll meet you outside.
00:56:58Why are you doing this?
00:57:00You gave her these grand ideas and this girl is just gonna crush her down.
00:57:04I don't believe that.
00:57:05So you're just gonna drop into our life and now you know all about it, right?
00:57:08I just know she's a great student.
00:57:10A born leader.
00:57:11Creative, intelligent.
00:57:14Shamika.
00:57:15My Shamika.
00:57:16Yes.
00:57:18If she tests well enough in May, I think we might be able to get her into Manhattan West.
00:57:22For middle school.
00:57:23That's for gifted kids.
00:57:25Yes.
00:57:25Oh, maybe Mrs. Benton can keep the boys a little longer every day.
00:57:38Okay.
00:57:40Okay.
00:57:44Okay.
00:57:45Okay.
00:57:45Okay.
00:57:55Good morning, Mr. Clark.
00:57:58Good morning.
00:57:59Good morning, Mr. Clark.
00:58:02I'm Mr. Clark.
00:58:05What a layout you do this.
00:58:06Good morning, Mr. Clark.
00:58:08You like it, Mr. Clark?
00:58:10It's really good.
00:58:11You got quite a talent for this.
00:58:13Well, it's one of my minis, dog.
00:58:17Sir.
00:58:18Thanks.
00:58:19Good morning.
00:58:20Good morning.
00:58:20Good morning.
00:58:20Good morning.
00:58:25Yo, what up, Tay?
00:58:42Don't you like me, Mr. Clark?
00:58:44Yeah, don't hate on me, because I got skills.
00:58:46Skills?
00:58:47You mean being a straight-up punk?
00:58:48You real good at that?
00:58:51Yo, come on, Tay.
00:58:51Just chill out.
00:58:52You telling me to chill, won't you?
00:58:54You telling me to chill?
00:58:55Come on, man.
00:58:56I mean, Mr. Clark likes that art crap, okay?
00:58:58So he thought I did it, and I just went with it.
00:59:03Don't turn around.
00:59:04I don't know anything, man.
00:59:06I'm sorry.
00:59:18Superintendent Stevens has joined us
00:59:19to determine if Tayshon Mitchell
00:59:21should be expelled from Inner Harlem Elementary.
00:59:23I vote yes.
00:59:25Send him to juvie.
00:59:27This isn't a democracy, Mr. Brampton.
00:59:29Howard, would you let Mr. Turner
00:59:31finish what he was saying?
00:59:32You're his foster parent.
00:59:34You got the say here.
00:59:37We don't need his lazy ass around the house all day.
00:59:39What did you just say?
00:59:40Look, if we expel him, he's only going to fall further behind.
00:59:50Mr. Clark, our students can't simply do what they want
00:59:53with no consequences.
00:59:54What about the consequences for Tayshon?
00:59:56We are supposed to be keeping these kids in school.
01:00:01That's all.
01:00:02Just take a step back.
01:00:03Remember that I have eyes in the back of my head, so stop fighting.
01:00:12This is not a test.
01:00:15This is my phone number.
01:00:17I want you guys to call me if you have any questions about homework,
01:00:21need any advice, or you are in trouble.
01:00:25That's 24-7.
01:00:28Pick up your math workbooks at the front of the class,
01:00:32and we have a book report due tomorrow.
01:00:41Remember, there are two variables in this equation.
01:00:43Okay, so X equals...
01:00:45X equals...
01:00:46X equals...
01:00:47Come on, Tayshon, you can do this.
01:00:49You know what you want about me, man!
01:00:51X equals...
01:00:51X equals...
01:01:10X equals three-eighths!
01:01:12Yes!
01:01:13Oh, that's great.
01:01:13Just keep doing it like that.
01:01:16This doesn't sound good.
01:01:36How long you been this way?
01:01:38A week, maybe more.
01:01:40You have pneumonia.
01:01:41I can send you home, but you'd be confined to bed rest for two weeks.
01:01:45Minimum.
01:01:46Yeah, I can't do that.
01:01:48Or I can admit you to the hospital right now, Mr. Clark.
01:01:51Okay, everybody, take your seats.
01:02:18Mr. Clark, you look really white.
01:02:23Yeah, even more than usual.
01:02:26We have four...
01:02:28four weeks.
01:02:30Now, I know that doesn't seem like a lot of time, but if we work really hard, I know we're
01:02:36going to do great on these exams.
01:02:38So, let's go over our science topics from last week.
01:02:45Who knows those?
01:02:47Magnetism, chemical reactions, and gravity.
01:02:53gravity.
01:02:54Okay, good.
01:02:55Gravity.
01:02:56Gravity is important because...
01:03:00Okay, we get it, Mr. Clark.
01:03:09Gravity makes you fall down.
01:03:10Is he kidding?
01:03:11Allie.
01:03:12Yep.
01:03:13Mr. Clark?
01:03:14Mr. Clark?
01:03:15I hope he's all right.
01:03:16Allie.
01:03:17Allie.
01:03:18Yep.
01:03:19Mr. Clark?
01:03:20Mr. Clark?
01:03:21Mr. Clark?
01:03:22What's the night?
01:03:23Mr. Clark?
01:03:24What's the night?
01:03:25Mr. Clark?
01:03:26What's up?
01:03:27Mr. Clark?
01:03:28It's a liebull!
01:03:29It's a liebull.
01:03:31Easy.
01:03:32It's a liebull!
01:03:34Easy.
01:03:35Ready?
01:03:36I hope he's all right.
01:03:41But not not not a liebull man, he's all right.
01:03:44This is a liebull!
01:03:46Is that good? You want me?
01:03:57Yeah.
01:03:59Very nice of Jason, so let me borrow the camera.
01:04:02Oh, he's happy to help.
01:04:03How much are we taping?
01:04:04Four hours.
01:04:06Four hours? Every day?
01:04:08Yeah, kids need it. It'll go quick.
01:04:12For you.
01:04:15Hey, Marissa.
01:04:22Wait, come over here.
01:04:27Can't have our Mr. Clark looking all sloppy now, can we?
01:04:33You know, a guy could get used to this.
01:04:38Come on, seats are ready.
01:04:41Okay, now just because I'm on this videotape doesn't mean that I can't see you.
01:04:46Belita, here's that gun.
01:04:47All right, is everybody ready?
01:04:54Yes, sir.
01:04:54Yes, sir.
01:04:56Gravity, the force of attraction between two objects.
01:05:00That is gravity.
01:05:06Now, according to the definition of gravity, why did the egg fall?
01:05:10Because.
01:05:10And no, Julio, it's not because the egg and the floor are hot for each other.
01:05:14Come around and face me.
01:05:17The egg fell because the force of the mass and the distance between the egg and the floor caused the reaction.
01:05:24Okay, now, get out your workbooks because I have to clean my floor.
01:05:29Good morning, Mr. Clark.
01:05:44Good morning, Tisha.
01:05:45You have my kids' homework?
01:05:50Good to have you back.
01:05:51That's not true.
01:05:55Yes, it is.
01:05:56I want my CD back and my money, bitch.
01:05:58What are you playing?
01:05:59I did that CD back.
01:06:00No, you didn't.
01:06:01It's not did.
01:06:02You're always doing it.
01:06:03It's Mr. Clark.
01:06:04You're playing.
01:06:05Just go.
01:06:08Help me.
01:06:10Help me.
01:06:12Help me.
01:06:13Help me.
01:06:14Help me.
01:06:15Help me.
01:06:16Help me.
01:06:17Help me.
01:06:18Help me.
01:06:19Help me.
01:06:22Help me.
01:06:24Help me.
01:06:25Help me.
01:06:34Get your Whale.
01:06:36Get your Whale.
01:06:37Music.
01:06:39Get your Whale.
01:06:40You tell me.
01:06:44You guys have one week till the state exams.
01:06:47One week to show Mr. Turner and your parents and yourselves what you can do.
01:06:58You guys don't have anything you want to tell me?
01:07:04There's no way we're gonna pass those tests. We always mess up.
01:07:08Don't jump on us, sir. I mean, it's nothing personal.
01:07:12Everything we do in this room is personal.
01:07:15How we talk to each other, how we work together, and how we've prepared for these tests.
01:07:23But we're way behind now.
01:07:25We're not behind. You're ahead.
01:07:29Everyone thinks we're losers, Mr. Clark.
01:07:32No.
01:07:35You are not losers.
01:07:45These rules, they represent everything you've accomplished this year.
01:07:52Discovering new things.
01:07:55Believing in each other and believing in yourselves.
01:07:58And I'm proud of you.
01:08:04Compared to all that, this test, pfft, it's nothing.
01:08:10But Mr. Clark, we have to get certain grades to graduate, right?
01:08:15So what if we, you know, choke?
01:08:18Choke.
01:08:19But you're not going to choke.
01:08:22You guys didn't work hard all this year just to get ready for some tests.
01:08:29Every day, in this room, we are learning things far more valuable than you can get in some book.
01:08:37I teach you.
01:08:45And you teach me.
01:08:48And together, we learn to love to learn.
01:08:51So, next week, you're going to take that test.
01:09:03You're going to do the best that you can do.
01:09:05And you are going to walk out of that room and know that you can do anything you want for the rest of your lives.
01:09:22All right, tomorrow is the big day, but don't worry.
01:09:25You know the material backwards and forwards.
01:09:28So, just get a good night's sleep and, you know, good luck.
01:09:32Federia, can I talk to you for one minute?
01:09:34And Tayshawn, can you wait for me at the door, please?
01:09:41I know that it's been hard for you to fit in.
01:09:44But you can be smart and still be cool.
01:09:47In fact, you're so smart and cool, you can do anything you want to do.
01:09:53I want to be a doctor.
01:09:56Okay, good.
01:09:58You better kick some butt on that test then, doctor.
01:10:03Thank you, Mr. Clark.
01:10:05Good luck.
01:10:07Tayshawn!
01:10:14Yo, kid, get it done.
01:10:15You know what I'm saying? Do this.
01:10:16All right.
01:10:17Hey, what up, T?
01:10:18Yo, little brother, where you been, man? We been looking for you.
01:10:21Hey, yo, you forgot what's up?
01:10:22Check it. We got some goods. We got to move now. Come on.
01:10:25It's raining, dude. Come on.
01:10:31Hey.
01:10:32Look, you can't be in and not roll.
01:10:36It can't be like that, son.
01:10:38I was thinking maybe we could walk to school together.
01:10:41If we can do a last-minute review of the test on the way.
01:10:43Yo, you're running this way or running that way, Payaso.
01:10:48Which way? Come on.
01:10:53That way.
01:10:54That way.
01:10:58Tom.
01:11:07Okay. So, when you get to the math section...
01:11:14Ready? Go get him.
01:11:15Go get him.
01:11:28Good morning.
01:11:29Do not open your test booklets until I tell you to begin.
01:11:35Keep your eyes on your own paper.
01:11:38When you've chosen your answer, fill in the corresponding answer bubble completely with a number two pencil.
01:11:45If you require an additional pencil, please raise your hand and one will be provided.
01:11:53Do your best.
01:11:55And no talking.
01:11:56You may begin.
01:11:57You may begin.
01:12:05You may begin.
01:12:06You may begin.
01:12:07Okay.
01:12:11Let's go.
01:12:12Here.
01:12:16Here.

01:12:33Here.
01:12:34Think they're as nervous as we are?
01:12:46I'm not nervous.
01:12:48Fantastic.
01:12:49Thanks.
01:13:04It was 32 apples, right?
01:13:13Yeah, that says it's hard, Mr. Clark.
01:13:15So you're going to come over?
01:13:34Double mocha, latte, no foam.
01:13:36Hi.
01:13:36Come on in.
01:13:38How were the tests?
01:13:40Oh, uh, good, I think.
01:13:43I think the kids did pretty well.
01:13:44Yeah, okay, whatever.
01:13:44I'm freaking out.
01:13:47I got an audition.
01:13:49Oh, my God, that's great.
01:13:50No, no, that's not so good.
01:13:52Jason got a job, and he asked me to go to L.A. with him.
01:13:57I don't know what to do.
01:14:01Tell me what to do.
01:14:04I tell sixth graders what to do,
01:14:12and last time I looked, you weren't in the sixth grade.
01:14:15So, thank you very much for stopping now.

01:22:20This class, this sixth-grade class, tested higher than any other class.
01:22:41You even tested higher than the honors class.
01:22:50Congratulations. Congratulations, Mrs. Clark. Very impressive.
01:23:08Shameka, your award was going to be for highest achievement in English, but I'm afraid I'm going
01:23:14to have to change that, because looking at your exam scores, I now see that you achieved
01:23:19something that no other student in the entire district achieved.
