00:00London's drag scene has evolved into one of the most dynamic and influential performance communities in Europe.
00:08What started decades ago in small pubs and cabaret bars has expanded into a wide network of venues from Soho institutions to warehouse stages in East and South London as well.
00:21Today, Drag in the Capital is about far more than glamour and lip syncs. It's a mix of theatre, satire, political commentary and dance, as well as fashion and storytelling.
00:35Now, I spoke to London drag queen Pasty about drag life in London and RuPaul's Drag Race.
00:43So I started dragging East London and East London has a whole scene that is very, very different to, you know, there's Soho where you have Soho queens.
00:55There's a lot of different vibes, like there's South London queens in Clapham and stuff.
00:59And then I'm in East London and I started in a bar called The Glory, which was just down the road from where we are now.
01:08And they've recently moved up the road to a new venue called The Divine.
01:13But I started there in a competition and the competition never performed before, made it all the way to the final.
01:19I think London is amazing for drag because it is very universal in the sense that if you go to South London,
01:28you'll get like a very different type of performer to Soho, Soho to East London.
01:33East London, I love it so much because it's one of the main points of East London drag that is very unique about it is the fact that there is a very big queer movement-esque vibe.
01:50We get lots of trans performers, lots of non-binary performers, drag kings things.
01:56So it's a very queer space, like when you go to East London, you go to a brunch, you'll never know what kind of performer you're going to get.
02:05It'll be very different to like Soho is where you're going to get like death drops, splits, all of that kind of stuff.
02:11But then East London, it's going to be ridiculous, stupid.
02:15So I got cast for RuPaul's Drag Race and went on to it.
02:22It's recently come out. It's still airing at the moment.
02:26The best thing about it was the queens that I got to work with.
02:30There was 11 other queens and I knew most of them already or had heard of them.
02:36But when you see the queens that are from all around the UK, you've got lots of different places.
02:42There's Leeds, there's Newcastle, there's Wales, Brighton.
02:46And then I think there was four or five of us that were London-based and they were all people who I've known and worked with.
02:53So it was very nice having the familiarity.
