00:00Hey you, do you know what kind of train this is?
00:08Hmm?
00:09Train, do you know what kind of train this is?
00:11Well do ya?
00:11It's a magic train.
00:13Tickets please, tickets.
00:15Well, you're coming.
00:17Magic carpet on the grill.
00:18Never take a breath.
00:20Oh, it's a surprise, it's a dream on the phone of the express.
00:23Too bad.
00:24Actually, it's a Baldwin-284S3 class virtual type clean locomotive.
00:27And you know what kind of movie this is?
00:30It's cutting edge and a combined performance capsule technology in a way that's never been done before.
00:34Aha, but do you know how they made the movie?
00:37Who are you anyway?
00:38Oh come on, you remember me.
00:40I was on the train with you.
00:41Wait, stop the picture.
00:43See, that's me.
00:44Yep, the one in the green pajamas.
00:46Okay, you can start again.
00:48Oh yeah, I remember you.
00:50This was a total dream job.
00:51I love movies.
00:53And the way they made this movie was, well, it's a little like creating magic.
00:56Tell the engineer to slow down.
00:59Well, maybe I'm moving too fast.
01:01Let's go back to the beginning.
01:03That is more like it.
01:05It all started with a book.
01:06A book filled with awesome paintings.
01:08If we were going to truly try to take Chris Van Alsberg's artwork and make it come to life,
01:13this was the undiscovered country that we were going to have to visit.
01:15And we were going to have to go and figure out a way in order to make this movie.
01:20How can we make Chris Van Alsberg painting come to life?
01:25And the idea of how to pull it off intrigued me.
01:29I brought the question to my long-time collaborator, Ken Ralston, over at Sony Imageworks,
01:35and said, is there any way that we can maybe pull this off in the world of digital rendered movies?
01:42Wait a minute.
01:43I totally know everything there is to know about digital rendering.
01:46You name it, I know it.
01:48But do you know about performance capturing?
01:49Yeah, yeah, I know what that is.
01:51That sounds familiar.
01:51It's what you can't perform it.
