00:00An interior designer in the little country of South Carolina.
00:03I bring pattern, color, and creativity into my client's home.
00:08Alongside my partner of crime, Chelsea.
00:10Whoa!
00:10An interior designer extraordinaire who also keeps me in check.
00:14Nope, nope, let's try it.
00:15And my general contractor, Grumpy, who can build anything that we dream of.
00:19You don't need me?
00:20I don't need you.
00:20I love that.
00:21And also happens to be my dad.
00:23Oh my gosh!
00:24There's color everywhere!
00:27Despite my name, my world is a rainbow.
00:30Be careful crossing that road.
00:32I always am.
00:34Hi, Dad.
00:35Morning, sweetie.
00:36How are you?
00:36I'm good.
00:37I've looked the plans over, but what's the family told you about the house?
00:41So this one is a 1950s duplex.
00:44Yeah?
00:44The entire family's living upstairs, so it's gotten pretty cramped.
00:48And they want to turn it into a single-family home.
00:51The Dabneys have been living in this beautiful 1950s home.
00:55Yes.
00:56They've been confined to the top four.
00:58And they would like to turn it into a single-family home.
01:01They want to de-dupe it.
01:02They want to de-dupe it.
01:03Yeah.
01:04So to get them started, we're going to just convert the downstairs.
01:10Hello!
01:11Hello!
01:11I'm here!
01:12How are you?
01:13How are you?
01:14I'm good.
01:15It's a little tight.
01:16This is a little tight.
01:17Yes.
01:19Yeah.
01:19One of our biggest problems is as soon as you come in, you immediately feel cramped.
01:24We're all living in the upstairs apartment of this duplex.
01:28And we have two little boys growing up very rapidly.
01:31Normally, we're so on top of each other that our littlest one sleeps downstairs because there
01:36is more space than the rest of us sleep upstairs.
01:39Yeah.
01:39And the dream is to make it one big single-family home and have lots of space to spread out
01:44and start feeling like we're actually living in a house instead of an apartment.
01:48Well, I don't know what's behind here.
01:50We're going to find out.
01:51But opening this up, opening that up, it's certainly doable.
01:55That would be great.
01:56That would be amazing.
01:56Can you tell us what's beyond these walls?
01:59Right.
02:00So it's essentially a two-mirror duplex, two-bedroom, one-bath.
02:04It's got the 50s layout.
02:05The kitchen is in the back, hidden off by itself.
02:07And the two floors are essentially identical to each other.
02:10Right.
02:10Tell me a little bit about how you want to feel when you first walk into your house.
02:14Well, definitely like welcoming.
02:16You know, that sounds pretty cliche, but welcoming and bright.
02:19And right now, when you walk in, it looks like a duplex, right?
02:22There's a door in an apartment immediately to your right when you walk in.
02:24I want this to really feel like the stairway of a single-family home.
02:29We just want it to feel bright, cheery, youthful, and timeless, I think is sort of our design aesthetic.
02:35Okay.
02:36I feel like because this is the first space that you see, you really want this to sort of set the tone for the rest of the home.
02:43I feel like this would be a really good space to do wallpaper in.
02:47Are there colors that you love?
02:49I love the combination of green and purple, or I like those kind of contrasting colors, really rich.
02:55What if we started in the hallway looking for a wallpaper that has muted purples, maybe?
03:01Just because you want the timeless feel, I feel like the softer purple would achieve that better.
03:07Maybe we can bring this color into the rest of the house.
03:09Yeah.
03:10So would you like to show us the rest of the house?
03:12Yeah.
03:12Okay.
03:13All right.
03:14That's great.
03:15This is our current living room.
03:18We love it.
03:19We've got this big, gorgeous bay window.
03:21We love the fireplace.
03:22But really, I think what would be helpful is if it was more open to the foyer and then had some sort of natural flow, like it's meant to be part of a single-family home.
03:33Well, the good news in all of that is those are simple things to make happen.
03:39We take this opening, we make it bigger.
03:42We make this opening bigger.
03:44When you do those things, the house feels bigger.
03:47While it's the same size, the foyer for sure will be three times the size it is now, or we'll feel that way.
03:53Oh, great.
03:55I know this is kind of out there, but it would be really cool if we dipped this entire space in this arsenic.
04:04Yes.
04:05Sure.
04:08You know, we don't have low ceilings, but they're definitely not high.
04:11And how the darker color makes the room feel smaller, potentially.
04:15You know, actually what I have found is that if you paint the walls in a fun color and then you leave the ceiling white, your eyes go immediately to the ceiling, which make the ceilings feel low.
04:28If you take the color and you do it on the wall and the ceilings, it doesn't jump out at you as soon as you walk into the space.
04:34So I don't think you'll be sorry about that.
04:36That sounds great.
04:37Yeah.
04:37Maybe we could just go right next door.
04:39Okay.
04:39So, what are you thinking in here?
04:45Ideally, in my dreams, this would be our kitchen.
04:48We'd really love a big island so that when we're entertaining, someone could perch and sit and I could be cooking and talking or the kids could be eating there and just a really functional space.
04:58I don't know if that's possible.
05:00Magic wand.
05:01Ding.
05:01Ding.
05:02Yes.
05:03And where will you take the space from to make it bigger?
05:06That-a-way.
05:07Okay.
05:08But you can't have a nice big kitchen if you don't have a pantry to go with it.
05:12And I would guess that its pantry's going to live over this way.
05:15Can we go take a look?
05:17Yes.
05:17See what the options are there?
05:22Oh, wow.
05:23Yeah.
05:24You're right.
05:24This feels like an apartment kitchen, not like a house kitchen.
05:27Yes.
05:27The good news is, is it'll get a little bigger.
05:30Yes.
05:32Well, we might just make that wall go away altogether.
05:35And this door, with it.
05:37Cabinetry runs along the entire length of this wall.
05:40And that nice long island from your dreams is right down the middle.
05:44That would be great.
05:45And now that you've got these nice open spaces and you've got everybody coming over and you're having parties left and right,
05:52sooner or later, someone's going to want to know where the restroom is.
05:55So, you're going to need a powder room for this party house.
06:00Good point.
06:01We're going to take this kitchen space and we're going to reconfigure it such that you'll have a powder room that you can get to from the foyer.
06:08And then a little hallway that'll give you access to a pantry and a laundry room.
06:13Sounds good.
06:13That sounds great.
06:14Okay.
06:15We've got one more space that we need to talk about.
06:18Show us the way.
06:18I'm going to go first.
06:22So, you want a dining room?
06:23Yes.
06:24Here it is.
06:25Perfect.
06:26You like that wall?
06:28No attachment to that wall whatsoever.
06:30That's good because it's going away.
06:31So, will some of this room be kitchen or will this all be dining room?
06:35It'll all be one big room.
06:36But I would love to transition into a different color in this room.
06:40I need a way to do that, please, sir.
06:43Yes, ma'am.
06:45So, dining room.
06:46How do you want it to feel?
06:47Elegant enough that it feels like a grown-up space, but still be a place where we'll be able to eat as a family.
06:53So, it just has to be super functional for either purpose so that we actually use it on a daily basis.
06:59Yeah, you don't want to have a dining room that's just there to have a dining room.
07:02Exactly.
07:03You have a complete waste of space.
07:05Yeah, exactly.
07:06It's a really, really charming house.
07:08I feel like Caroline in particular, I think she's going to be really open to having some fun in this house.
07:15Is there a time frame here?
07:16Is there anything happening that we need to be out of here for?
07:19I'm turning 40 this year, and so I've kind of been thinking that it would be just amazing to be able to have, yeah,
07:26my 40th birthday party at our home when it's all redone and kick off the very first of a series of parties.
07:33I think that's very fitting for your party house.
07:35So, we have five months until Caroline's birthday.
07:39Five months.
07:40We've got to move walls.
07:42We've got to do cabinetry.
07:44We have to create a whole kitchen where there is not a kitchen.
07:47I'll need a key from you.
07:48Do you have a key?
07:49Yeah.
07:50Oh, boy.
07:51You know, once we start, you won't see this again until it's finished.
07:55You understand that, right?
07:56How does that make you feel?
07:58I'm fine with that.
07:59Mr. Control Freak is probably a harder pill to swallow.
08:03Yes.
08:03We've got to do it.
08:04We've been pining over this for two years.
08:05So, we've just got to jump in the deep end.
08:07There you go.
08:08As long as we don't have any hiccups, we can do it.
08:13You just hiccup while you said hiccup?
08:15All right.
08:16We get packing, you start packing.
08:18Oh, good one, Grandma.
08:19That was a good one.
08:20So, demo's underway, but there's a lot to do.
08:31Dabney's had basically two homes in it all this time.
08:35Two kitchens, you know, two living rooms, two of everything.
08:38Because it's a dupline.
08:39And so, to turn it into a single-family home, there's a lot of wall-moving that has to occur.
08:45Can't you go?
08:45There.
08:46Doing well.
08:47Jane Kirsting is one of our contractors on this project.
08:51Well, it is a surprise.
08:52Look at that.
08:53Used to be flat across.
08:54You didn't find a skeleton in there, did you?
08:56No.
08:56No bags of money, no skeletons, so.
08:59Hey, Beth.
09:01For me, it's really fun to come in on these days when the house is being, like, really pulled apart.
09:06Because I get to see what's behind the walls.
09:09What do you think it was?
09:11Well, we think it was a niche for furniture.
09:13So Hutch seems most likely.
09:15Yeah.
09:16So the next step is to take this wall out.
09:19Are you ready to get your hands dirty?
09:21Me?
09:22This one?
09:26Don't say a word.
09:27Ready for action, I see.
09:28Yep.
09:28All right, take this.
09:29Okay.
09:30In between the slats of wood, and just pull.
09:37Woo!
09:38Do I think that Gray is built for manual labor?
09:42Absolutely not.
09:44Shove it up here.
09:47Up.
09:48Watch me demo this whole house.
09:50I don't love this.
09:52Okay, I'm done.
09:53Anytime that there's a need for me to do manual labor, I excel.
09:59Ha!
10:00Is this the original paint color?
10:03Was this wallpapered at one point?
10:04It was wallpapered paint.
10:05That's cool.
10:06Multiple times.
10:07So it looks like first it was green, and then it was pink.
10:11And then they wallpapered, and then they just painted yellow.
10:15We actually found green paint, which we're going to be using in the living room.
10:20We found wallpaper.
10:22It's cool to be able to see a bit of the history of the house that's hidden behind the walls.
10:29Over the history of this house, it's seen a lot of color.
10:34And it's about to see a lot more.
10:35Our team's got the demo complete.
10:52The crew have got all the drywall out, and their foyer's been reframed.
10:56And the stairwell, while still in the same place, has been reconfigured, and the foyer feels much more open now.
11:02So, looking forward to seeing the bones of the house and seeing what we've got to do next.
11:08Good morning, Bradley.
11:08Hey, welcome.
11:10You guys have been busy since I have my nose under this tent.
11:13We've got it all opened up, and we're putting it back together.
11:16Yeah, it's looking nice and clean and straight, which is the way I like to see it.
11:20Yeah.
11:20So we've got a nice big open foyer.
11:22It's not going to be quite as open as it feels right now, because we've got a wall that's going to occur here in a bathroom, right?
11:27Yes, we have a powder bath that's going to go right in here, and it kind of sits up underneath the stairs.
11:32Okay.
11:35So, one of the situations we ran into here is we have to remove the center of this wall,
11:40because the entire floor system is sitting on the center wall plus the roof system.
11:46We found that some of the walls that we thought we could just get rid of, the second floor will go boom.
11:53So, we still have to do the whoosh, but we've got to avoid the boom.
11:58So, our existing low-bearing wall that runs down the length of the middle of the house is going to have to be reconfigured.
12:06The openings aren't going to be where they used to be.
12:08That's correct.
12:09So, all the framing we're talking about here today, how far out do you think we're going?
12:13A week?
12:14Yeah, probably a week and a half.
12:16We have to put in the new walls here that define the spaces, rebuild everything.
12:21All of this kerfuffle with the framing is going to cost about two weeks of time.
12:27Okay, bud.
12:28Thank you very much.
12:29Thanks for coming by.
12:29See you soon.
12:30So, we had a little hiccup with the framing.
12:39Hello.
12:42There were some things buried inside the house from the way it was originally framed that wasn't apparent until things got opened up.
12:50Well, things have moved a little bit since I was here last.
12:53The framing issues, plus the kerfuffle that we had with the building inspections that took longer than perhaps they might have, has cost us this time.
13:03So, we're going to see how things are going.
13:06So, gas is inspected.
13:07Gas is inspected.
13:09Electrical is ready for inspection?
13:11Ready for inspection, yeah.
13:13Inspections are a necessary evil in construction, and it's a check to be sure that everything has been accounted for.
13:20Electrical, plumbing, any gas, and in Charleston, they can't happen all at once.
13:26After framing adjustments and waiting on inspections, this process has taken us two months.
13:32So, it sounds like we're probably hanging sheetrock week after next.
13:37That would be the hope.
13:38I think they should be able to insulate next week, and then they should be able to start hanging.
13:43Somebody eventually has to feel the pain of that, and it'll be Gray and Chelsea.
13:49But, uh, we're going to make that time up and get out of here on time.
14:02This is going to be a whole different house.
14:05Between the framing, the government, and their permit, we are finally getting into this place.
14:10It's about time.
14:12I'm excited to get in there and see the new footprint of the house, because we'll really be able to get a good idea of what the house is going to feel like spatially.
14:21Yes.
14:21And then see if all these ideas are going to work in reality.
14:25I am stoked.
14:26We'll see how stoked you are when I show you what I have in mind.
14:30It's a beautiful entry.
14:32It's something that I wish I had at my house, and I don't.
14:34A foyer is just lovely.
14:35Yeah.
14:36The fact that this was, like, able to be opened up is going to give her exactly what she wanted.
14:41The foyer is a lot more functional now.
14:43The first time we walked in here, it was very difficult to even have a few people standing.
14:47Now it's a lot more comfortable to be in here.
14:49So I brought a few wallpaper samples.
14:53I brought this one, which is sort of, like, pink and purple.
14:56Caroline really loves purple.
14:58It's, like, her favorite color.
15:00And so I felt like purple really should be the first thing that greets her when she walks in the door.
15:05It's a bold decision.
15:06For me, this is the winner.
15:08It feels fun.
15:09It's, like, a great shade of purple.
15:11And it's timeless.
15:12So I want to do a purple trim.
15:14I just have to decide if I want to do the lighter purple or the darker purple.
15:18I want it to feel sophisticated while still being purple, which is, like, it's a hard task.
15:26Purple is the color of royalty, but it's normally done in a castle.
15:31Yeah.
15:32This is too electric.
15:34This is too light.
15:35These don't read sophistication if that's what we're going for.
15:38You know, you want to see it?
15:40Yeah, you can hold it.
15:42It's a very pretty tone of purple.
15:45Yeah.
15:45So we're going to go with the darker trim.
15:48It's this wallpaper that feels timeless and elegant.
15:52It feels sophisticated, and it's going to take very simple colors and elevate them the whole way through.
15:59It's so beautiful.
16:00Let's talk about the powder room before we go into the living room.
16:04When we talked about the powder room, they wanted something that was functional but also really fun and funky.
16:09So it feels like the perfect opportunity to, like, really lean farther into that purple for her hair.
16:16We have not just leaned in.
16:18We have fallen to the floor.
16:20I do have a little thing that I saw.
16:22It's a wall-mounted concrete sink that's dyed lavender.
16:25Oh my gosh, this is, like, probably literally the same.
16:28Hold on.
16:29This looks like the same exact color as the trim.
16:32Look at that.
16:32Oh my gosh.
16:34I do think this paint color is going to be too dark.
16:37So if we can just get them to lighten the same color.
16:41Yeah.
16:41We can really lean in to the purple, and I love a concrete sink.
16:46A sconce could be really good, too.
16:48This is going to be really good.
16:49Yeah.
16:50Let's go with the living room.
16:51Okay.
16:51I'm very, very excited about how this room is going to complement that but also transition to the kitchen.
16:59Purple in the foyer and the green in the living room, which I think it's really nice that she chose that color.
17:06And we get to sort of pay homage to what the home was when it was first built.
17:11Yeah, I love that idea.
17:13This says arsenic, and I know what the color that is.
17:18You're insane.
17:20Because she wants to really have this room feel, like, bright and colorful and cheerful, there's only one green that's in my brain.
17:31That's insane.
17:33Gray, we always take things into another level, but this is, oh my gosh.
17:41Let her dry.
17:42Gray, we've only used this color on floors before.
17:45Give her a minute to prove herself.
17:47I, this, I don't know if this is a reasonable color.
17:54Don't get me wrong.
17:55Okay, hear me out.
17:56I love arsenic.
17:58Hold on.
17:59I'm going to show you.
18:01Sometimes your choices are quite bold, and they scare the dar out of me.
18:06Boring.
18:09I don't love those.
18:10Lose fests.
18:13Wow.
18:15So it makes my belt feel extra tight today.
18:17I go through phases.
18:19It's like excitement, terror.
18:22Happiness and joy.
18:23Trying to find someone that agrees with me.
18:26And then making it work.
18:27And then it's beautiful at the end.
18:28Yeah.
18:29It's always, always annoyingly beautiful at the end.
18:34Oh, thanks.
18:35When they're separated by trim, it might actually help to make it feel a little bit better.
18:40It's contrasting.
18:42These colors are light and bright, and then it's got the dark in between.
18:47Technically, I don't really think there's a really good reason why this works together.
18:52There's no science behind it.
18:53You have to use your heart.
18:55And it looks good.
18:57I like it.
18:58It looks really pretty, and I don't know why I like it.
19:01I don't either.
19:02I really, really do.
19:04I know it's going to be good.
19:05I just don't know how yet.
19:07Another thing that happened when we were in the walkthrough is that I told the dad and he said I wanted to do a full dip in this room so that the ceiling would sort of just go away and it would make the room feel bigger.
19:18However, now that I'm in the space and I see the beams, I feel like it's something that I want to highlight instead of hide.
19:25So we'll lean into the arsenic green for the walls, but on the trim and the ceiling, I want to do a nice cream color that shows off the beams.
19:34We'll do a neutral rug and then pull in a purple sofa that ties in the color from the foyer and then use wood tones for the other furniture and then colorful art that ties into the kitchen.
19:46That's going to be really nice.
19:47So let's figure out how we transition it.
19:50Let's do the kitchen.
19:51Kitchen.
19:53All right.
19:54So kitchen, dining room.
19:56Let's focus in on the kitchen.
19:57When we first walked into this house, Caroline and David had the teeniest little kitchen tucked away in this little corner that you have to find.
20:07But now it's going to be like a main focal point of the house.
20:12We talked about a yellow.
20:13So this is a bit of a bolder option.
20:18And I like to pair it with an ivory on the walls.
20:21I need another paintbrush.
20:22Oh, that's a comb.
20:25That's a different kind of brush.
20:27That's my popcorn.
20:29I get snacky.
20:30There's really another, there's another brush with popcorn in it.
20:36Stop it, Gray.
20:38What's not in that bag is the question.
20:41First answer to that question is I have no idea.
20:45I think I feel it.
20:47It's like a clown car.
20:48Like it's just things keep coming out.
20:51Ridiculous.
20:52This is a softer, creamier yellow.
20:54It's popcorn color.
20:56Oh my gosh.
20:57Is there any way we can maybe add some wood tones?
21:03So David originally was very afraid of having a yellow kitchen because he didn't want it to feel like a country kitchen.
21:09I think some people have nostalgic references back to their childhood that they think of and they associate with certain things.
21:17I mean, color does not define style.
21:20Here, I'll give you some options.
21:22Well, I...
21:23You're welcome.
21:25Found that down the bottom of the bag.
21:26Oh, that was a cheesy one.
21:27Yeah, that's really beautiful.
21:31I really love that.
21:33The style of the cabinetry, the hardware, and the fabrics, and all the other things.
21:38It's going to be a modern-looking kitchen with some soul.
21:43So basically what floors will stay the hardwoods.
21:45There's going to be beautiful buttery yellow cabinetry that's going to separate the dining room from the kitchen, but it's also going to create so much storage.
21:54An island will be nice right here in the middle.
21:57Brass, wood and cream accents.
22:00Put some bar stools.
22:01Agreed.
22:02I love all of this.
22:03And now the question is, how do you make a dining room fancy but also casual?
22:07Well, let me tell you.
22:09All right.
22:10There you go.
22:10I'm such a nice lady.
22:13Okay.
22:14I'm really excited about the dining room.
22:16So there's a wallpaper that I've wanted to use for a very long time.
22:19Don't look at it.
22:20We've been wanting to use this forever.
22:22I love this paper.
22:25I feel like, okay.
22:25It's got the purple and the yellow.
22:27It's got the arsenic green.
22:29What I was about to say.
22:30And it's got the creamy background to go in the kitchen.
22:34It is, as my dad would say, the rosetta still.
22:38So in this room, we're going to wallpaper.
22:41We're going to find a beautiful buffet and bring the same yellow trim into the space.
22:47Maybe lacquer a piece of furniture.
22:49Lavender tones.
22:50Yeah.
22:50I think it takes it up a notch.
22:52A beautiful chandelier and have a dining room table that really takes the cake.
22:56I got it in my car.
22:57So you've been leading me on the whole time because you knew you had to do it.
23:00You had this in your back pocket.
23:02See, you just had to trust.
23:04All right.
23:06I'd feel better if we got in some AC, though.
23:14We are one month away from install at this point.
23:17It's gone slow between weather and framing issues.
23:20So we've really got to get to it.
23:22Oh, my gosh.
23:23It's starting.
23:24Hello, Calvin.
23:25Hi, Calvin.
23:26Hello there.
23:27Today, we're going to go see Calvin.
23:28We have these beautiful stools that we just got in.
23:31And we also have some really lovely fabric that we want to get them upholstered with.
23:36You changed the colors.
23:37Yeah.
23:37It's pretty.
23:39Gray Bencoat.
23:40She has, once again, bowed my mind and customized this fabric.
23:44It has every single color that's going to be in the Dabney's house.
23:47The cabinet's the yellow.
23:48It needs to run that one.
23:50I think I like it like that.
23:51Yeah, because the cabinet's sitting back behind you.
23:53It needs to go up to the cabinet.
23:55If this man says it goes this way, then it goes this way.
23:58I agree with Calvin.
24:00It's gorgeous.
24:00So, but anything we can pick him up in like a week and a half-ish?
24:03Sure.
24:04Won't be no problem.
24:05Bye, Calvin.
24:06Bye-bye.
24:07Bye-bye.
24:07I'm really excited to get into the Dabney house because cabinetry is going in.
24:21And we get to see the footprint of their kitchen, finally.
24:29Oh, my goodness.
24:31It's so nice to see these cabinets and hearing the color.
24:34I feel like it's coming together.
24:36I have a question.
24:38That was me feeling panicked.
24:39I still feel scared about this island.
24:42We need to go as far as we can this way with the oven still being able to open.
24:46Correct.
24:46I'm just nervous about once we do the hangover.
24:51It's right here.
24:52And then the bar stool.
24:54Are you sitting?
24:54Are you trying to...
24:55Yeah, see?
24:56Between your butt and the wall, it's not a lot room.
24:59Let's not get so aggressive.
25:01So 36 inches is the standard minimum between two pieces of kitchen furniture, let's say.
25:09So cabinetry to cabinetry.
25:11And this is over that.
25:12But it is very, very tight.
25:14It's like a two-butt kitchen.
25:16And that's about it.
25:17One-butt kitchen.
25:18Oh, that's...
25:19You need to get out of it.
25:21You got a bump butt to get by.
25:24If we brought the island in slightly, and then maybe instead of doing a traditional 12-inch
25:30overhang, we brought that down to maybe 10, even maybe 8 inches, it could really make this
25:38feel like it's got a lower profile.
25:40The good news is, the island is here, and it's placed, but it's not secure.
25:45So we can, once the stone gets on there, and we get the countertops and everything set
25:50officially, we can make sure it's perfect.
25:52Yeah.
25:53All right.
25:53I got to go home.
25:55Okay.
25:55That sounds great.
25:56Things to do.
25:57Things are moving quickly.
25:58The cabinetry is in, so that's great.
26:00But we really have to make sure that we keep the speed up to make sure that things are happening
26:05on time so that we can hit the deadline that we need to hit for this project.
26:10And it's coming up quickly.
26:11And making me nervous.
26:25This project has been a bit of a doozy, but we have really big things happening right
26:30now.
26:30We've got paint going up, cabinetry is going in.
26:35We are just one week away from finishing up, and I could not be more excited.
26:40Oh boy, Kelsey.
26:46Why did you say, oh boy?
26:49Because it's not the right color.
26:51I mean, the arsenic is the right color, so it's not in the right place.
26:54So, let's play opposite day.
26:59Everything that's painted arsenic was supposed to be cream.
27:03Are there people even available that can fix it?
27:06The fireplace and the ceiling was supposed to be the same cream that's going to be in the
27:11rest of the house.
27:12Okay.
27:13All right.
27:13Well, I kind of love some of the changes that the painters made.
27:19That's a way to be positive.
27:22Okay.
27:22This is what I want from you.
27:23So, completely blank slate, you now have a room that you're standing in, and you can
27:28look at it and, once again, make a decision seeing a lot more of the color in the room.
27:34What would you do in a perfect world?
27:38How does her process go?
27:40Um, she walks around the room.
27:43She thinks about every possible situation.
27:47So, that's where it turns purple.
27:51So, you'll be standing in this room, and you'll see green trim, purple trim, yellow trim.
27:58Does that feel insane?
28:00You know?
28:01I'm so sorry, friend.
28:03Have you met Gray Benko, my business partner?
28:05The lady with the pink sofa in the rainbow house?
28:09I mean, I think...
28:09Yeah, I think there's going to be plenty of color in this house.
28:11It's in color, kind of our thing.
28:14She ponders and thinks and thinks and ponders, and then finally comes to a conclusion that
28:20no one else on the planet would come to.
28:22Hi, girl.
28:23What you doing?
28:23Hey.
28:25I'm coming in.
28:25Why?
28:26Why?
28:26I feel like we're going to get in trouble.
28:28No.
28:29I figured you should feel like you're already in trouble.
28:31For once, we didn't do it.
28:33Okay.
28:34You can fix anything, right, Grunt?
28:38I don't know.
28:38Now that I'm in here, I think it was a happy accident, because I actually think that the
28:44arsenic on the trim is really nice.
28:47It looks really, really nice.
28:48I'm very lucky to have Gray Benko as my business partner.
28:52She will probably die if she ever hears me say this, but not everybody gets to work with
28:57somebody who, in my personal opinion, is like a color genius.
29:00The walls are going to be arsenic.
29:03We need to paint the fireplace and the ceiling the cream color that they were supposed to
29:09be, and everything else can stay the same.
29:11All right.
29:11Well, let's get to moving.
29:12Okay.
29:13Thanks.
29:14Thanks.
29:14All right.
29:14Let's go.
29:23Calvin.
29:24Hello.
29:25Hello there.
29:26Today, we are going to get six dining room chairs with skirting.
29:32Very excited about the skirting.
29:33And four stools for the island.
29:35And that is why we brought Grumpy to get some muscle.
29:39All right.
29:40So you got some stools for us?
29:42Sure.
29:42I have a few of them.
29:43They're all boxed up, ready to roll.
29:45I see no boxes.
29:46Calvin.
29:46Oh, we see the boxes on the back.
29:48I pulled two out of the box.
29:51Oh, my gosh.
29:53Those are fun.
29:54It's beautiful.
29:56Those chairs belong to the Dabneys, and they were in bad shape.
30:00And so a really quick fix to fix drabby chairs is you can reupholster them for almost nothing.
30:06Like, totally were able to breathe new life into these chairs by just changing the fabric.
30:11Calvin, these are beautiful.
30:13Thank you so much.
30:15Yeah.
30:15They got the mini skirt.
30:16They got the mini skirt.
30:17They got them.
30:17They got them.
30:18The piping's got a little pop to it, too.
30:21It honestly looks more expensive.
30:23And so if you can upgrade your details just a little bit by adding a contrasting piping
30:28or a fun little skirt, it changes the look of everything and also elevates the style.
30:33Even I noticed it, and I'm just a mule.
30:36Oh, my gosh.
30:37All right.
30:37We got it.
30:38Calvin.
30:39You're welcome.
30:40Thank you, always.
30:40Oh, that's a really handy stop.
30:42Oh, my gosh.
30:44I thought we were playing Tetris.
30:49Oh, that was quite smooth.
31:00There is a ton of work happening at the Dabney House.
31:03The trim has been painted in the foyer, the powder room, and the dining room.
31:07The painters are here fixing the ceiling and the fireplace paint.
31:12The island is locked into its new position.
31:14The new hood is looking great.
31:17All the cabinets are almost in.
31:19And Chelsea is going to check on the progress.
31:22Hey!
31:24What?
31:24Look at this kitchen.
31:25Look.
31:27Let me see.
31:29Let's see.
31:31And the island is perfectly placed to the stove.
31:35Moving it that little bit, that tiny little bit, it made all the difference.
31:39It's much, much roomier in here, and it looks great.
31:42I'm so smart.
31:43Are you?
31:43Where are you at?
31:45I'm in my office.
31:46That's a beautiful view.
31:48Okay, well, I think that I'm going to move on and go look at the wallpaper.
31:52Okay, look at my wall.
31:53All right.
31:54Melissa!
31:55Chelsea!
31:57You're right here!
31:58Hey, good morning!
32:01It's here!
32:02Oh my gosh!
32:05I don't know.
32:06This is a wallpaper that we have dreamed of using for years.
32:10I mean, it's gorgeous.
32:12It's this natural lighting in here.
32:14It's going to be beautiful.
32:14It's going to be so amazing, and I cannot wait to see this in the face.
32:20Let's go look at the foyer.
32:23It's so pretty!
32:27Isn't it amazing?
32:28The purple on the ceiling looks perfect with the paper.
32:31I love it with all of my heart.
32:33I'm just obsessed.
32:36I feel so classy looking.
32:38Yes.
32:38I was having a hard time picturing the ceiling being purple also, but it ties everything together.
32:42I think it looks like it was always meant to be purple.
32:44It's really nice.
32:45It's really, really nice.
32:47Everything looks so good, but there is still so much to do.
32:51Thank you for always coming through.
32:53You're the best.
32:54So I'm going to get out of the way so these cabinet guys can do all the finishing touches.
32:59The built-ins also need trim, and some of the wallpaper still needs to be hung.
33:04The living room is being repainted today.
33:06I'm not stressed at all.
33:08All right, everybody.
33:19Hey, how's everybody feeling?
33:22So, okay, so Grumpy has put us in a bit of a pickle.
33:26I thought you liked pickles.
33:28Celesta!
33:29Not the kind you can't eat.
33:31We don't like those pickles.
33:32Clearly.
33:33Long story short, there was framing issues, things being delayed, which puts people in our direct vicinity while we're trying to do our thing.
33:43It's crazy in here, right?
33:45It's complete chaos.
33:47It seems like there's some, like, table-setting stuff missing.
33:49Do you see the napkins?
33:51Maybe there's some stuff still on the moving trucks?
33:54I don't know how we're going to get this done in the next, like, how many hours do we have left?
33:57Yeah, the good news is we fixed your mix-up on the paint.
34:00No, no, no, no, no, no.
34:02Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:04Not our mix-up.
34:05It doesn't matter.
34:06The paint's good.
34:07The trim is good.
34:08It's going to be great.
34:09It is going to be great.
34:11We just need to, like, less talking, more doing.
34:14So, yes to this mirror.
34:15Okay.
34:18It's beautiful.
34:20I love it.
34:21It goes well with the paint colors.
34:23I think so.
34:23Yeah.
34:23I need to start pulling things that I can get up on these shelves.
34:29Chelsea, you need to start pulling the furniture and telling people where everything belongs.
34:34Yes.
34:35Make sure that there's any extra lamps anywhere.
34:38And, Dad, you need to fill in where it's necessary and also be mentally prepared to get furniture in place.
34:46Yes, completely agree.
34:47I'm going to need a break after this.
34:53How's it going, fellas?
34:55Let's be very honest.
34:56Please.
34:56When it comes to the clutch moments, Grumpy always comes through.
35:00Ooh, you brought the chairs?
35:02Yeah.
35:02Okay.
35:03Thank you, Dad.
35:03So many shelves.
35:09So this house has a lot of shelves.
35:11Oftentimes, when I style shelves, I find that the best thing to do is to start with the books.
35:17Because books, they're practical.
35:19They take up a lot of space.
35:21And it's good to help ground objects.
35:23So I get all the books where they feel balanced.
35:27And then I come in with the objects and the art afterwards and start to fill in the holes as I see them.
35:34Yeah.
35:34Sometimes even you pull the colors off of the art onto the shelves.
35:39Like, it's really, it's more intricate than you think it is.
35:43I think that if we put this lamp in this corner and we have that lamp in this corner, that's enough lamps.
35:49I'm starting to realize just how much there still is to do.
35:53There's a lot to do.
35:55No, to the right.
35:57More.
35:58More.
35:59More?
35:59That's not true, Dad.
36:01The clock is TikTok-ing.
36:03And we don't have a lot of time to do it in.
36:11I'm excited for them to see the living room.
36:14I feel like we took a really big chance with that arsenic color.
36:18It's so bright.
36:20But I'm so happy with how it turned out.
36:22Hello!
36:22Hi-bye!
36:24Somehow, we were able to finish it.
36:26I mean, I can't believe we got it done.
36:28I might have slept for an hour and a half.
36:30Are you nervous?
36:31Like the good kind of Christmas morning nerves.
36:33But I could not be happier with how it turned out.
36:36It's just, it's so bright and colorful and happy.
36:39And I can't wait to hand their house back over to them.
36:42The amount of change that has happened since you guys were here last, it's a completely different home than the home that you get with the keys to.
36:49And I'm just so excited for you guys to see it.
36:51We're excited, too!
36:52I know.
36:52Is it the time?
36:53Are you ready?
36:54Yeah!
36:54Okay, well, let's go, Leo.
36:57Let's do it.
36:57Y'all first.
36:58Oh, my gosh!
37:06So good!
37:07You really wanted this space to feel classic, but colorful.
37:12And you said purple was your favorite color.
37:14So I really feel like the wallpaper that we chose, it was a home room.
37:18So neat.
37:19It's so pretty.
37:20Yeah, and look, we can all fit inside of it.
37:22There's plenty of room for all of us.
37:25This looks amazing.
37:27Okay, so we're happy in here.
37:29Yeah.
37:30So we're able to, right behind that purple door, find a powder room for you.
37:34Would you like to see it?
37:35Yeah, let's do it.
37:36Yes.
37:40Wow!
37:42Whoa!
37:43Oh, look how cute it looks!
37:45Look at our sink, it's purple, too!
37:47Is the sink cement?
37:48It is, you love the purple sink.
37:50I am obsessed with that.
37:52That is so cool.
37:53Look at the sconces!
37:55Yeah, it looks great.
37:55It looks so good.
37:56Look at all the little details are so cute.
37:58See the teeny, tiniest rug you've ever seen.
38:01I love it.
38:03All right, let's go see the living room.
38:04We went for it.
38:05Okay.
38:05But I think it's really beautiful.
38:07Yeah?
38:08Can I look now?
38:08Yes, you can look.
38:09Yes, you can look.
38:12Oh my gosh, I don't even know where to look.
38:15Look at this.
38:17Oh my gosh.
38:19Oh, look at the couch!
38:21It's purple!
38:22I know!
38:24This looks so good.
38:26Can I touch it?
38:27Yes!
38:27Do whatever you want.
38:28It's so pretty.
38:30Oh my gosh.
38:32This is amazing.
38:33It is.
38:33It's completely transformed in the exposed beams.
38:38Having that extra height really makes it feel bigger.
38:40It does, yeah.
38:41Like, I didn't expect it to feel this big.
38:44Yeah.
38:44It's just right.
38:45David, how do you feel about the arsenic?
38:47As with the purple, I was kind of thinking, you know, how's that going to go together?
38:51But it's great.
38:52I love it.
38:53A color like this.
38:54Like, it's so bright, but it goes away because it's not about the walls.
38:59It's about the vibe of whole space.
39:01You know, the whole room is just a vibe now.
39:03Standing here and, like, looking through into the purple is one of my favorite things.
39:08Yes.
39:08Really, really amazing.
39:10My cheeks hurt from smiling.
39:12Like, I could not have imagined it would turn out like this.
39:14We can actually have more than two people over at our house now and have a nice time entertaining people.
39:20Well, you know, as nice as this space is, you know where people congregate.
39:24In the kitchen.
39:25They're congregating in the kitchen.
39:26Everyone always wants to be in the kitchen.
39:28Yeah, that's right.
39:28Let's go see what we got.
39:30Okay, all right.
39:32This is so pretty.
39:34I mean, it looks great.
39:35It's just a big kitchen.
39:36It already looks great.
39:40Oh, my gosh, I'm going to cry.
39:41This is so pretty.
39:42This is, like, absolutely beyond.
39:46This is amazing.
39:50Whoa!
39:50Look at all of our things here on display.
39:54Like, all of our stuff looks like grown-up stuff in here.
39:57Oh, my gosh.
39:58Oh, look at the subway tile.
40:00Oh, my gosh.
40:01Look at all the hardware.
40:03This is so pretty.
40:06Okay, so I know you guys were worried about the yellow feeling like it would give country kitchen vibes.
40:12Does this feel like a country kitchen?
40:13No, not at all.
40:14No.
40:14This is completely timeless and elegant.
40:16Yeah.
40:17And I love the unlacquered brass.
40:19It's so pretty.
40:21It's so, so pretty.
40:23This is amazing.
40:26I love it.
40:26There's enough room over here.
40:28There's plenty of room in the middle because it could have been, like, tight.
40:31There's plenty of space to entertain in here.
40:33And then it's so open to this space, so, like, people can just kind of be in and out.
40:37There's a really good flow, I think.
40:38It's opening up between two spaces like this makes them both bigger.
40:43Love it.
40:45Are you guys ready to see the dining room?
40:46Yeah.
40:47Yeah.
40:47Okay.
40:47Okay, let's go.
40:48Let's go see it.
40:53Oh, wow.
40:55Oh, my gosh.
40:57Like, this is a proper dining room.
40:59Look at this wallpaper.
41:01You drew all this.
41:02I did.
41:03I got it.
41:05This is all framed out, like, so nicely.
41:07Look at this.
41:08Look at this rug, how well it goes with everything.
41:10And it goes with the marble on your furniture piece that we painted.
41:14Oh, I didn't even recognize that.
41:16Look at that.
41:18This room was destined to be a dining room.
41:19It was.
41:20Yeah.
41:20It was.
41:21No doubt.
41:22Like, the happiest formal day.
41:24So happy.
41:26It doesn't feel like we get to live here.
41:28Like, I can't believe we get to live here.
41:30The way that this house started to what it is today, it's hard to believe it's you in the same house.
41:36You're only lacking one thing.
41:38What's that?
41:39And that's a wait again.
41:40Thank you to us.
41:41Keep it.
41:43I have to hug you again.
41:44Thank you guys so much.
41:46We trusted you guys from the get-go, and the result is just spectacular.
41:49We'll get out of your way.
41:51Bye, guys.
41:53Just walking and seeing all that color, seeing how it all came together, it just made our jaws drop.
41:59What do you think?
42:01I just, like, felt right when we opened the doors.
42:04You know, it's like, oh, you see this, and then, oh, you see this.
42:06But you see the middle and the anchor, and it all feels right.
42:09Happy birthday, Mama.
42:12Kids can go upstairs.
42:13They can have some space up there.
42:15We can relax in here with our friends.
42:17I think it's just going to be really, really nice to have that room to grow and spread out.
42:21No.
42:21I think it is.
42:22I know.
42:22I think it's just going to be really nice.
42:23We're so excited.
42:23We're so excited.
42:23Let's look.
42:24We'll see you next time.
42:26We'll see you.
