00:00:00look at all the water now isn't it crazy morning at day 16 the rain stopped up in the middle of
00:00:19the night somewhere and so we almost had three full nights of rain oh teal look at this whoa
00:00:30that's crazy here your blinds completely underwater and i do believe your fishing pole is as well huh
00:00:37yeah the fishing pole was tied off next to the blind so that's gone too damn
00:00:45the environment's changing quite significantly you know all of the animals were attracted to
00:00:49our waterhole before so i had a blind set up there and that was a really good hunting opportunity
00:00:54and now there's water everywhere there's also a chance there's you know trucks in here from now
00:01:00on you know yeah seeing how absolutely devastated this environment is it feels like it's never ending
00:01:08oh look at this look at this too oh gosh that's gonna be like 15 16 feet yeah an absolute monster
00:01:18this is completely unfishable now yeah that's for sure the next stage of the apocalypse yeah terrifying
00:01:36after two weeks of intense heat yes i got it and hard fought wins
00:01:42it's dinner time heavy rains descended on the wasteland
00:01:56and pounded the survivalists for days it's been raining for almost 24 hours now
00:02:03the temperature has massively dropped oh my god all we can do is pray that we make it till morning we
00:02:12are sitting ducks
00:02:16without a roof on their boma steve and alexa and frank were left exposed we're hunkered down there's
00:02:23nowhere we can go if we get out in the rain we'll get hypothermia to take a set of this challenge
00:02:28this is tapping with us this is really up i can suffer when i'm only human
00:02:48you're right over there lex you okay honey sure yeah
00:02:52what's up oh no i'm just a bit overwhelmed i'm sorry i just hate feeling so helpless
00:03:0260 hours of no sleep will do that yeah avoiding hypothermia for three nights in a row now honestly
00:03:09i've put my body through some pretty things and that's pretty much got to top it we love you
00:03:15our team we're gonna be there for each other to the very very end huddled with alexa in the truck
00:03:27and the pouring down rain at night freezing because i didn't build a better shelter i felt like it was
00:03:33my fault that she was suffering i felt like it was my fault that she was freezing to death and it just
00:03:40crushed me doomsday in africa it surely is in this apocalyptic wasteland of a place when you don't
00:03:50have that little glimmer of hope it's really hard to know how long you have to hang on for and
00:03:55inevitably that's going to take a toll on people's mental health africa has been rough on us to say the
00:04:03least but we're motivated uh we got a lot to do we got to build up our shelter more that's going to
00:04:09be top priority but we are hungry we're about out of impala yep with the rain also it kind of kills our
00:04:17hunting activities since there's so many places for these animals to drink now yep i'm gonna make sure
00:04:23that we have firewood for tonight i'm just gonna hunt catfish i've had a lot of uh teammates and
00:04:29survivalists throughout the years i don't know too many of them that could take these giant
00:04:33transitions from hot to cold just the extremes that africa has to offer so i'm gonna do whatever
00:04:39i can to make sure that we're gonna get through this the last few days have been rough and i mean
00:04:48rough alexa she's definitely struggling the most and food's running low so it is crucial that we find
00:04:55another source of protein out here back in florida i do quite a bit of bow fishing these catfish
00:05:02in the dry season when everything dries up they burrow down in the mud and they start spinning and
00:05:07the slime from their skin creates like this sack which keeps them alive through the dry season and
00:05:13then when the rains come they kind of burst out of that and swim back up into the water so i think our
00:05:19chances of eating some catfish now are better than ever here we go that's a big one
00:05:35they're quick
00:05:40we're getting closer
00:05:45holy crap
00:05:49we're getting closer
00:05:52see that's what i'm talking about
00:05:58hunger makes a better hunter
00:06:03that's a big sigh of relief right there
00:06:09hey guys you ready for breakfast what i got a catfish hell yeah look at this guy how'd you get him
00:06:17did you shoot him with a bow holy hell yeah good aim good job nice dude i've been really concerned
00:06:28about how we're going to survive but i find myself surrounded by two teammates who are incredibly skilled
00:06:36hunters and fishermen so i'm grateful man that looks good yeah it does yeah this place took away a lot of
00:06:42our joy over the last couple of days and i'm i'm glad it's given us some back yeah nature you get that
00:06:49little blessing that like resets everything maybe it feels some pity nature knows no pity
00:06:55all right babe get in there get in there yeah it's good
00:07:06love that my first taste of catfish in africa will always be it tastes like hope yeah 100 hope tastes
00:07:14a lot better when you can actually eat it right
00:07:25oh steve i know this is gonna burn you alive this sun feels so good to me
00:07:30i hate this one oh
00:07:34desperate for their first significant meal you know you're hungry when you're picking through some
00:07:39animals crap to find something to eat the non-stop rain delivered a crushing blow to wes and steve oh
00:07:47man my fish track has disappeared we are absolutely but a strange discovery
00:07:54what in the hell brought an unexpected bounty
00:07:59dinner africa has finally rewarded us
00:08:02not stopping us now it's unbelievable we're rocking it yeah our shelter smells like full-on meat like you
00:08:15can smell it from 10 foot away i'm gonna go and get the pot on a boiler and i'm gonna have a nice little
00:08:20bone broth all the flavors from the bones the rest of the meat oh i can't wait our shelter absolutely
00:08:26bomb proof yeah storm comes in we stay dry brilliant i feel great you know i got energy again and uh processing
00:08:36on the now is going really good i mean really good i couldn't be happier right now i tell you what with
00:08:45all that water we got now i think the game is gonna be really widespread yeah 100 i'm glad we have the
00:08:53meat stores right now because i think hunting would almost be a waste of time right now yeah for day 16
00:09:00we've got to uh process the last bit of our meat get it hung up get it smoked we're gonna have us a nice
00:09:07little stew tonight it's gonna be unbelievable
00:09:15what the hell is that
00:09:16oh disgusting that's bad we're opening up our last shank it's had some sort of infection in
00:09:24its leg and it's went really bad good lord this is no good right here yeah it's gotta go
00:09:32it's all rotten meat nothing else was like that and we all smoked exactly the same
00:09:36that's a wasted three days of food you know maybe it had something to do with the animal's death
00:09:40originally maybe that's where something's settled in but uh that's one of those things you don't
00:09:45take a chance on you get rid of it i feel a bit sad because uh we thought this was gonna take it up to
00:09:5210 days and have another broth from that uh not now so we need to start start thinking about opening
00:09:58our game again looking efficient and yeah we can use this for bait for the catfish we need to just make
00:10:04sure it's not too far away and it's not too close to us wait till the hyenas and the lions smell it
00:10:09as bad as it smells they'll smell it for miles yeah we're pretty comfortable with the distance
00:10:14it is i mean who wants to have to fight for meat in our shelter when it's free and available 75 yards
00:10:21away it stinks to death oh man what kind of came to visit
00:10:42here's the elephant again and
00:10:45here is me just me in my home unable to hunt due to an aggressive elephant
00:10:57that elephant is circling and stalking me and three days of unrelenting rain it just sucks it's just
00:11:06abysmal joe is feeling the weight of the challenge my energy level is just depleting
00:11:11there he goes right there he's probably a good oh i don't know
00:11:2430 yards away
00:11:30never been this
00:11:31that's a little scary elephants can reach a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour
00:11:38and sustain it for over 200 meters that's almost twice as fast as the average human
00:11:45going to do some more marking of his territory
00:11:49keep on walking buddy
00:11:50this tree is marked by the elephant that stalks me
00:12:06this shows intention he's a lone bull unpredictable it could do unspeakable things to me when they want to
00:12:15attack they beat you they stomp you they whip you against trees and then they bury the body you
00:12:21know as out of respect or some some practice they have i mean they move silently it's unbelievable how
00:12:27quiet they move through this you won't even hear them until they're right on top of you they're not above
00:12:34taking a human out and i just don't want to be that statistic out here look at these scratches they go
00:12:40all the way down here to the base to the very almost
00:12:46probably about 12 feet up so i want to build a ladder so i have an escape route from my tree so
00:12:52i know now i got to get at least that high up in order to escape
00:12:57so we need one long piece here so i'm gonna go with scavenge materials from the ruins
00:13:08nope let's see what we got here oh look at this that's a big old telephone pole
00:13:17the fact this has been laying here for 60 years and still retain some of its shape that's pretty damn
00:13:22good i could make that a ladder real easy but there's your guide wire for this thing
00:13:30that thing is probably buried deep once standing nine feet tall the telephone pole was supported by
00:13:38a thick cable guide wire buried deep into the ground to execute his plan joe must first remove several
00:13:45bolts and a bracket in order to separate the pole from the cable and then attach footholds made from
00:13:51scrap wood and scavenge nails before finally securing it to the tree to form his escape ladder
00:14:00having all these assets means you got to figure out ways around kind of the industrial parts of things
00:14:06and we don't have all the tools so it's this big balance between what you have what the materials are
00:14:12and you know what can you do with your own myths and wits how do we get you free here
00:14:19it would slide off much easier if i got this one bolt off and this wrench is too big
00:14:30it might work actually
00:14:36thank god this is an old pole with square nuts which they don't really make anymore
00:14:40because it makes for a good hitting source good hitting platform for this wrench
00:14:47to uh to try and get this thing loose
00:14:50it's it's like flint knapping doing this you know it's like strategic strikes see now all right
00:15:01god i hope this pole doesn't get super thicker at the bottom
00:15:05is this gonna take all day working the down damn you oh my gosh
00:15:18is it a time of day is it i think so by a little built on snack
00:15:32we're gonna ration it because it's not gonna last forever yeah
00:15:35i think fish should be our focus we know there's a load of fish in there yeah we can give anything a try
00:15:45what's that it's not like a lion
00:15:48i'll tell you what i'll get this outside door do you want to get that one
00:16:00something really not good is going on right now
00:16:02what was it
00:16:11oh man right there
00:16:16okay
00:16:21good lord
00:16:27holy
00:16:28holy
00:16:40oh man
00:16:42good lord
00:16:47holy
00:16:56i'm sorry i'm scared of the way
00:17:01he's gone
00:17:07shaking my gentlemen's pumping oh yeah
00:17:08let's have a fight with something
00:17:11you good on leaving everything shut down for a few minutes let's just leave it closed up
00:17:16okay yeah i wasn't expecting that now i was just chilling yeah i mean we've got a holy moment here
00:17:22i've got more than 100 days under my belt on naked and afraid as a experienced survivalist and i
00:17:30haven't seen anything like really absolutely nothing like this this is really a wake-up call
00:17:36i'm shaking still to just give me an ass attack the blood pressure through the roof
00:17:42what you got there i'm gonna get into some target practice so i was wondering if you want to join me
00:17:47yeah sounds good it's been a couple of days since i pulled the trigger on anything so we'll make sure i still don't have it
00:17:53that's a big 200 pound mile right there after several close hunting calls
00:18:18the discovery of a fallen kudu oh my gosh it's still wiggly brought hope to teal and was
00:18:25oh look at that is that red meat endorphin rush that's super tender but three days of rain and moisture
00:18:32i'm trying hard to juggle the smoke outside of the smoker we have the potential of losing a lot of
00:18:39meat that way made ruin to their meat preserves to get enough of the moisture out this one i know is
00:18:44bad it's got that aged beef smell we're gonna kill something okay we're gonna start from scratch
00:18:52it's back to hunting today but uh i have to take into account you know i first to admit not a great
00:18:59hunter not even a good hunter but i won't be deterred i'm just gonna keep going keep chipping away keep
00:19:05learning keep adjusting until i finally get that food on the table all right let's add 20 yards to
00:19:10that elephant poo 15 18. all right watch how close i get okay
00:19:20where was i just above it's a big shot
00:19:24same spot right
00:19:32no just goes to the same spot to magnetize that way i still think i'm hitting an animal though right
00:19:40as a target archer i've been shooting archery for a very long time i think i first started shooting
00:19:47when i was eight years old but my experience with the bow is limited to sport i have a good bit of
00:19:54experience hunting mostly small game with the 22 and and shotgun for birds but not with a bow
00:20:05oh one from one look at that like a pro
00:20:08close that's only half inch off i still think that counts as a kill shot
00:20:25great shooting tex so what i do is i aim and i shoot okay that's what i've been wrong
00:20:34i've watched teal take a few shots now and uh i'm extremely impressed to her credit you know she's
00:20:40probably a better chance than me hitting something well you're starting hunter and i'm backup hunter
00:20:44that's no yeah just seems like the common sense thing to do let's do that i'll do rock paper scissors
00:20:50for it no you're starting i would hate to think that anyone was relying on me to hunt for a food source
00:20:57because but you know it's been shown time and time again that's not my strong suit but with teal having
00:21:03her be able to use that bow and arrow is giving us an opportunity to restock that food supply definitely
00:21:08gives me a little bit more confidence should we uh find ourselves in a place where we're hunting
00:21:13something any day soon yeah when we came together as a team i really felt comfortable relying on russell and
00:21:20was to hunt and i felt like maybe that's not my place but food is the top priority we have to eat
00:21:29so it sounds like it might be the right time to try my hand in it and i think there's a very good
00:21:34chance i might be successful yeah now we just have to find a place to shoot yeah i wish that the animals
00:21:41to come back
00:21:47my goal is to get this
00:22:09get this pole free of the guide wire take it over to my tree and then use it as a ladder to get up
00:22:15there so i have an escape route from the elephant so i'm going to need something to get to higher
00:22:20ground much much higher ground of course i thought it would just slide off
00:22:29it's just a fool's errands
00:22:45it's only gonna get harder this is a bit like sisyphus right now
00:22:49you can't go that way you can't go this way what am i doing why am i wasting so much energy
00:23:01this is where i've got to stop that's a lot of calories spent so damn disappointed in myself
00:23:10i got to remember the pendulum swings both ways man you get an adrenaline rush you got a nice low to
00:23:16come back back to you when that's gone starting to get a little black out that's what i'm feeling
00:23:22right now so i've got to start using my head more thinking more critically and more more conservatively
00:23:28about my energy it's the only way i'm gonna make it
00:23:44here's what i'm thinking string through all the top bits just six of them put those little stones in
00:23:49just keep them in like a flower yeah all right we had a pretty good line scare today
00:23:56it was uh not fun did it make me really take a hard second look
00:24:01at safety precautions yes it did and so we're gonna set up a little alarm system so what we're
00:24:08doing is we're gonna put six cans on the string we're gonna set like a bit of a booby trap up around
00:24:13the bait if any lines of hyenas go for that food hopefully it knocks these and that'll give us an
00:24:19early warning and get prepared in case anything comes to try to attack us that's funny yeah from
00:24:27that middle tree just to this little one here sure i'll let you tie your end on that and then we'll
00:24:33stretch it out like it yeah a lot of wind moving through you know the wind's swirling around a lot
00:24:50of things will smell that meat as the wind circles and so tonight's going to be very telling um because
00:24:57i know where it is now hey steve can you hear that okay i think those rocks in there are going
00:25:03to help it not make noise with wind yeah all right that'll help us as long as they stay away from us
00:25:09i'm happy yeah yeah yeah
00:25:26it is 9 16. the wind is wild
00:25:31i'm trying to get a small shadow but we have nothing to protect us from the wind
00:25:59so
00:26:08rough a windy night
00:26:11let's hope we stay sound
00:26:13hmm meaning my shelter and me shelter shifts corrugated roofing material two two by fours and 20 feet of wire
00:26:26that's it
00:26:27so i don't know if i'll get much sleep tonight because i traded in the rain for high winds and this shelter in high winds
00:26:37doesn't sound too good
00:26:39doesn't sound too good
00:26:47every time a breeze works through here it's a horrifying metal crushing sound
00:26:53like this place is going to collapse in on me
00:27:07oh my god this has been the worst night this wind is just wreaking havoc on the
00:27:35shelter causing the new door to fly open i'm trying to rework it and make it so it doesn't do that
00:27:45because it's a horrifying sound
00:27:47that will follow the creeks and the door goes flying open and cold wind comes rushing in
00:27:51what a blow isodi
00:28:04i think i would be able to try to do this
00:28:06but it's day to wait
00:28:08it's gonna be a long night and
00:28:10i need my sleep that was the one thing that i was controlling well that was giving me energy throughout the day
00:28:15He's giving me energy throughout the day.
00:28:18And if that goes, then so goes my mental health.
00:28:23This apocalypse is kicking my ass right now.
00:28:27Stop, man. Just f***ing stop.
00:28:45It's all green.
00:28:49Oh, that's disgusting.
00:28:52If there's any bait that's going to catch fish, it's got to be this disgusting.
00:28:56We've tried guts of lizards. We've tried all bugs. Nothing's worked.
00:29:01The fish are going to eat this. They've got to.
00:29:10The catfish seems like their numbers have increased because of the rain.
00:29:15I'm going to make this fish trap.
00:29:18And this is going to actually be unbelievably cool.
00:29:23It's going to resemble a lobster trap.
00:29:28I'm using the pallet boards and the wire Steve brought back from the farmhouse.
00:29:34So what I'm doing is I'm going to make kind of a barrel.
00:29:38And in the front of it is going to be a funnel.
00:29:41A catfish should feel very comfortable swimming in there.
00:29:46And then once it's in, it can't get out.
00:29:48Wes has designed a scavenged fish trap that will be closed and baited at one end.
00:29:54On the other end, he'll build a funnel of wires which will guide fish into the trap,
00:29:59where the sharp prongs will prevent them from escaping.
00:30:02I've never made a fish trap like this, ever.
00:30:06And so I'm pretty excited to give it a go.
00:30:10I need more wire.
00:30:11So I've got to see what I can find.
00:30:14In this apocalyptic scene that we're walking through, you really have to be creative.
00:30:18I think the opportunities to ramp up the survival and turn it into a thriving event
00:30:23is really here if you just look around hard enough.
00:30:28A half dozen pieces like this, and my trap will be absolutely like no escape.
00:30:41Okay.
00:30:42I'm trying to find that low-hanging fruit right now to conserve my energy.
00:30:49Yeah, I'm f***ing tired yesterday.
00:30:53I just wanted to finish that telephone pole and get it done.
00:30:56But, you know, it's just proving to be a much bigger setup than I could imagine
00:30:59with the tools that I have and the energy that I have.
00:31:01So I'm switching gears real quick.
00:31:04I've got to get smarter.
00:31:05I've got to get more tactical.
00:31:07Well, I found quite a few nails here.
00:31:09Today, I think I'm going to create a perimeter alarm system
00:31:13using some trip wire and some of the metal that I have acquired.
00:31:17That would be helpful in the event the elephant comes through.
00:31:19There's a ton of shell casings around here.
00:31:22If I drive a nail into it, I can put some wire on it
00:31:25and then nails plus casing strung together on a wire.
00:31:30Seems like whoever was here, use this as a place to fire off,
00:31:35do some marksmanship.
00:31:36It really kind of suits this entire apocalyptic challenge.
00:31:42Probably got about 20 casings.
00:31:45It's a good place to start, I think.
00:31:48So we've got to make, like, a wind chime on the wire,
00:31:52combining the nail with the bullet shells.
00:31:55So they kind of look like this.
00:32:03If I can put some wire on it, you know, I've got these things here.
00:32:07If I can get these things to cling together...
00:32:11...
00:32:12...
00:32:14...
00:32:15...
00:32:15...
00:32:16That's a good alarm system.
00:32:18I'll hang them up with some wire.
00:32:20And when I set it up, I'll feel a lot safer.
00:32:33Feels good seeing that sun peek through the clouds for the first time.
00:32:36Heck yeah.
00:32:37Three days.
00:32:38It's the first time I've been warm in three days.
00:32:40Right.
00:32:41Amazing.
00:32:43It's going to harden the ground up nice and quickly.
00:32:45Oh, it is the morning of day 17, and today's a good day.
00:32:49It's not raining.
00:32:50The sun is out.
00:32:51And honestly, like, yeah, I feel like a new me today.
00:32:56Jeez, our watering hole just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
00:32:59Now that we have energy, we need to focus on the goal at hand, catfish,
00:33:03and some shading for the roof of our shelter.
00:33:07This is four times as big as it was three days ago.
00:33:10Yeah.
00:33:11Anything in it?
00:33:12Nope.
00:33:13No catfish.
00:33:14Nothing.
00:33:15They're not quite as active as they were.
00:33:18They must have calmed down a little bit.
00:33:20These catfish are so bloody smart.
00:33:22They're either smart or they're full.
00:33:24This hillside.
00:33:26I always see guineas moving through this every day.
00:33:30I should probably concentrate on snaring them.
00:33:33Yeah.
00:33:33What do we got here?
00:33:38Hey, guys.
00:33:40What?
00:33:40It looks like a bed liner.
00:33:43Maybe it got washed out of the mud.
00:33:46What?
00:33:47Look, you can even kind of see where the floodwaters came in.
00:33:51Yeah.
00:33:52We got something else up here, too.
00:33:53Yeah, what's that?
00:33:54Huh?
00:33:55Yeah, buddy.
00:33:56Is this a door?
00:33:58That looks like part of a door for a stock trailer or something.
00:34:02That's a roof right there.
00:34:03Yeah.
00:34:04This massive storm that raged for three-plus days washed some more stuff down the riverbed.
00:34:10And in this wasteland of nothingness, there is no waterproof material.
00:34:15So seeing a flat, non-porous surface is a beautiful sight.
00:34:20Will the shelter frame hold that?
00:34:22It's heavy, but there's enough joists to disperse the weight.
00:34:26And this means waterproofness after spending the last three days soaking wet.
00:34:33Bring it back.
00:34:35Throw it on the roof.
00:34:37All right.
00:34:39All right.
00:34:39My door's kind of heavy.
00:34:41Yeah.
00:34:42It's solid steel.
00:34:43It must weigh like 150 pounds at least.
00:34:46Oh, yeah.
00:34:47You want it right here, right?
00:34:49Yeah, I'm thinking this way.
00:34:51Okay.
00:34:52These poles aren't in the ground that far.
00:34:54Gotcha.
00:34:54And they're not going to take any side to side.
00:34:56Gotcha.
00:34:56So let's remove the ribs first.
00:34:58Yeah.
00:35:00All right.
00:35:01Ready?
00:35:03Yep.
00:35:07Got it, Frank.
00:35:08Yep.
00:35:12Get the big post, the beams.
00:35:14Right in the middle.
00:35:17Yeah, that's that.
00:35:20Right over there.
00:35:22There?
00:35:22Yep.
00:35:25There you go.
00:35:26Towards the beam work.
00:35:28Oh, f***.
00:35:28Oh, f***.
00:35:29No.
00:35:30That's what I was talking about.
00:35:31Yeah, no.
00:35:33This is a...
00:35:34No, it's f*** now.
00:35:36It's f*** now.
00:35:38Can we put another beam in?
00:35:40Over there?
00:35:41I didn't know that this was going to hold it.
00:35:44No, we got to push these back that way.
00:35:50There we go.
00:35:51Oh, it's all falling apart.
00:35:52Oh, my God.
00:35:52Yep.
00:35:53All right, let's bring it down.
00:35:54We got to bring it down.
00:35:57Holy crap.
00:35:58George, it's f*** now.
00:35:59Oh, it's f*** now.
00:36:06George, it's f*** now.
00:36:11It's f*** now.
00:36:14Oh, my God.
00:36:14It's all falling apart.
00:36:15Yeah.
00:36:17Holy crap.
00:36:19Yep.
00:36:19Oh, God.
00:36:19Oh, God.
00:36:20Oh.
00:36:20Oh, God.
00:36:21Oh.
00:36:21Oh.
00:36:21Oh, that sucks.
00:36:29That could have been really bad.
00:36:30That could have been really bad.
00:36:31Well, maybe that was just a good Lord telling us not to do that so we didn't die in our sleep.
00:36:37One wind gusts the right way, literally murder somebody.
00:36:41I think wanting to be dry for once kind of enveloped our rational thinking,
00:36:47and that's when you don't survive, is when the rational thinking goes out the door.
00:36:51That almost went very, very, very wrong.
00:36:53Oh, it did go very wrong.
00:36:55But it could have been so much worse.
00:36:56We have to be really careful, guys.
00:36:58Yeah, yeah.
00:36:59The posts weren't really deep enough, and with the rain softening the ground up, they were able to move.
00:37:06So, same structure again, deeper holes.
00:37:09Same structure again, deeper holes, and we're not putting a 200-pound steel door on top of it.
00:37:17Trial and error.
00:37:18I'll tell you what, we learned real quick.
00:37:19It's a catch-22.
00:37:21With man-made materials.
00:37:22I'm thankful for the things out here that were left, but we also got to be super hyper-vigilant on how we use them.
00:37:28Blessing in disguise.
00:37:30Scary blessing in disguise.
00:37:31Today, we're going to build an elephant warning system.
00:37:41All right, so I've got this bundle of barbed wire.
00:37:44I'm going to string it through trees at about this high, and then I'm going to hang the bullet shell casings that I rigged with nails so that they'll hang and dangle, and then I've got some washers that they'll cling against.
00:37:56So, it'll create an early warning system if anything gets within a perimeter, so I'm essentially going to have a warning system, my boma, and then my shelter.
00:38:06So, I'll have three lines of defense here, in case that elephant decides that it wants to get a little bit more intimate.
00:38:12I'm putting this perimeter wire about 50 yards from my shelter.
00:38:17That way, I'll have at least some time to know that they're breaching this perimeter.
00:38:24That should give me enough time to get outside, get around, climb the tree.
00:38:38Who knows?
00:38:40In the calm of the night, it'll sound like something.
00:38:47Dunzo!
00:38:56Hold on, hold on, give me brace.
00:39:06Hmm.
00:39:10I am not doing that great right now.
00:39:12That's watershade.
00:39:17That's the best.
00:39:19Out there in the heat of the day, all the rising and standing and rising and standing and walking and sitting in the sun, like, it just, uh, it hit me real quick, you know?
00:39:31Just got, got that tunnel vision, things started to go gray, lost balance, so, you know, I just got to realize, like, hey, moving at that time of day, it's, it's really not good for my health.
00:39:43I'm only halfway through this thing, and I, I don't want to slip in, slip into some kind of zombie-like state.
00:39:49So, food is, food is my number one priority now.
00:39:51You know, even if the predator does come, if I'm totally exhausted, wasted, and lightheaded, and, like, what am I going to do?
00:39:58I'm going to fall over.
00:40:08Okay.
00:40:09All right, that's the bottom of the fish trap there, sealed up tight, and now I just got to work on this top part.
00:40:23Our very first day of recon, we're still using the same materials for tools and to make our lives better.
00:40:32Mmm.
00:40:33Mmm.
00:40:39Okay.
00:40:40This sucker's done.
00:40:41A decent-sized catfish goes in this trap.
00:40:44He will stay there until I get him out.
00:40:47That bait's going to be done.
00:40:49Rotting, Niala.
00:40:50Yeah, this is the piece I want right here.
00:40:53Catfish love nasty stuff like that.
00:40:56Here we go.
00:40:59That is a fish basket right there.
00:41:02Full-on fish trap.
00:41:09Hey, Steve.
00:41:10Any bites at all?
00:41:12Nothing.
00:41:13Is the trap ready to rock and roll?
00:41:14Yep.
00:41:15Oh, yeah, it looks good.
00:41:17Do, like, something like that?
00:41:18Yeah.
00:41:20You ain't seen our friend the croc, have you?
00:41:21I haven't seen him yet, and I hope he doesn't pull you in.
00:41:25Perfect.
00:41:26All right.
00:41:28What if I cut some brush?
00:41:29Put it over the top of it?
00:41:30Put a brush over it?
00:41:31Do you like it in dark places?
00:41:32Yeah.
00:41:34Might be tied back to the shelter in this heat.
00:41:36I've got two lines out.
00:41:37All right.
00:41:38I'm with you.
00:41:39Hopefully.
00:41:40We'll get some.
00:41:47Oh, God.
00:41:48Hey.
00:41:49See a snake skin.
00:41:50Where about?
00:41:52Right there.
00:41:53Oh.
00:41:54Oh, yeah.
00:41:56Oh, yeah.
00:41:58Well, that had to be yesterday, day before, something like that when it happened.
00:42:02Do you think that came in on one of the sticks?
00:42:03Do you think that came in on one of the sticks?
00:42:04Might have.
00:42:05But we've got so many gaps under here and everything, it might have been living here.
00:42:09It may still be living here.
00:42:10I've got to start being a bit more vigilant, because the snakes are out now, so I don't
00:42:15want to stand on one, especially a black mamba.
00:42:17If I get bit, I'll be out of here within 15 minutes in a grave, and I don't want that
00:42:22happening.
00:42:24One of the deadliest and fastest snakes in the world, the black mamba attacks by rising
00:42:30up and lunging to deliver multiple bites to its victim.
00:42:35Its highly toxic venom acts quickly, inducing heart attack and paralysis, and without anti-venom
00:42:41treatment, could be deadly in as little as 20 minutes.
00:42:44Ah, that's great.
00:43:07So I just got back from collecting some firewood, and Teal's up in the blind right now, sitting
00:43:13right here in that little hide.
00:43:18She has been up there three or four hours.
00:43:22She's able to find the perfect opportunity to pop up and drop one of these things.
00:43:26I'm going to be so excited.
00:43:28I'm just going to sit here and just nervously watch that field and see if Kudu or the Nyala
00:43:32come in.
00:43:34All right, so I'm up in the blind the first time.
00:43:36I know this is my moment to be able to provide a good meal for Waz and I, but it's so much
00:43:42different when you're stalking something and you're anticipating it to move.
00:43:47And that type of animal knowledge I don't have.
00:43:51But hopefully we get a couple in looking to feed.
00:43:55Hopefully it's a Nyala because they are a little bit less skittish.
00:44:00But if it's Kudu, that is what it is.
00:44:03And we'll try to get those guys.
00:44:05We're just going to do our best.
00:44:17Oh, she's got lots of animals walking up on her.
00:44:19This is exciting.
00:44:20There it is walking across.
00:44:24It's sight under her blind right now.
00:44:29They're moving in closer.
00:44:34That's how close she is.
00:44:39Probably 20, 25 yards.
00:44:43Oh, this might be her best shot.
00:44:46Come on to you.
00:44:50Come on to you.
00:44:51Come on to you.
00:45:17Come on.
00:45:19Come on, let's go.
00:45:21Come on.
00:45:22Come on.
00:45:24Come on, let's go.
00:45:42Oh, my God.
00:45:43Oh, that's so annoying.
00:45:47How frustrating.
00:45:52Oh, man.
00:45:53I just missed that shot, and I had so much to shoot at.
00:46:02I was, like, very careful, stalked it super slow.
00:46:08I stood up.
00:46:09I thought there were only, like, five out there.
00:46:11I stood up, and there was, like, 15.
00:46:15And that humongous one just staring at me.
00:46:17I picked the smallest one, and I thought I was on target.
00:46:21But, man, not only did I miss, but I missed a massive amount.
00:46:26I feel like I could have hit any single one of them, and I did not.
00:46:31I literally just totally whiffed.
00:46:35I'm still in disbelief.
00:46:36I feel like, how could I miss that?
00:46:41Oh.
00:46:45Hey.
00:46:46Welcome home, Miss Teo.
00:46:48Tell me about day one of your hunting adventures.
00:46:50Hmm.
00:46:51That little last group at the end there?
00:46:52Yeah.
00:46:53Just too many one?
00:46:54I think that's what it was.
00:46:57And I shot at the smallest one, but I was way under him.
00:47:00Okay.
00:47:02Between getting up slowly and firing at a moving target and nothing having bullseyes on it,
00:47:08it has proven to be just as difficult as I thought.
00:47:13Tearing apart that telephone pole had some advantages of finding some new materials,
00:47:24and I'm hoping I can turn this into a fishing reel.
00:47:30Right now, I'm dragging.
00:47:35I'm dragging hard.
00:47:37So, my next course of action and my focus is going to be acquiring food.
00:47:41So, here is our proposed fishing rod.
00:47:46So, what I'm going to do is scrape off all this plastic, exposing the wire.
00:47:53My priority is to figure out how to use that watering hole to get food right now.
00:47:58Hunting is not the method.
00:48:01The rain pretty much obliterated hunting.
00:48:04Now that there's water everywhere, the watering hole is just not a place where animals are gathering.
00:48:09So, I'm going to try turning it more into a way to catch fish.
00:48:14Well, I'm holding a ceramic insulator.
00:48:16Came off the power line, so this is an early way for power lines to be wrapped safely with
00:48:21give them some distance so that they weren't able to arc to metal.
00:48:26So, I'm just trying to use this bolt to create a handle.
00:48:29By running a large bolt through the middle of a ceramic insulator and securing it with
00:48:35two metal nuts, Joe's makeshift reel will allow him to more easily spool and guide his
00:48:40fishing line.
00:48:41All right, now, let's see if we can find a good thorn.
00:48:45Let's try and make a thorn hook.
00:48:47Oh.
00:48:50All right, we're just going to get some...
00:48:56Hey.
00:48:59See, I think that's when I start cussing a lot.
00:49:02It's when I start to get lightheaded.
00:49:03I think that's when all the swearing just comes out.
00:49:06All right, so, found these sickle bush thorns.
00:49:11And, you know, these things have been creating havoc on my feet this whole time.
00:49:18I think it's time I use them to my advantage.
00:49:23Then I'll wire wrap it so that the wire is the eyelet.
00:49:28That should be good.
00:49:29The hook is good.
00:49:31Got a nice, strong eyelet.
00:49:34I mean, I've starved my way through a challenge before, and that's not what I want here.
00:49:38I've got to use the elements and the items around me so that I can just bring in more food.
00:49:42Yeah, there we go.
00:49:54All right.
00:49:55Okay.
00:49:56Last one.
00:49:58There we go.
00:49:59Boom.
00:50:01That works.
00:50:02Following the shelter debacle, we decided that it's probably best if we go back to our original idea of the canopy,
00:50:10which was always meant to be designed as a sunshade, while Frank starts concentrating on food.
00:50:15I figure I'm just going to start setting guinea snares.
00:50:19Okay.
00:50:19Yeah, cool.
00:50:20Perfect.
00:50:20Get after it.
00:50:21Good luck, buddy.
00:50:22Yeah.
00:50:22Good luck.
00:50:23Godspeed.
00:50:24I'll cut all the wires out of that other cab.
00:50:27Yep.
00:50:28And then while you're tying these in, I'll start chopping green stuff.
00:50:33Yep.
00:50:36A wire.
00:50:38Awesome.
00:50:39I'm using wires that I've pulled out of some cars and securing the corners of the poles.
00:50:45And Stephen is cutting down all the green foliage that is going to go on top.
00:50:49Hopefully, that's going to mean that the structure is far more secure, so when we start throwing things on top, it's not going to move.
00:50:56Through there.
00:50:57Boom.
00:50:58There you go.
00:51:00Boom.
00:51:01Okay.
00:51:01So now what we're going to do is literally just toss it on top.
00:51:06There you go.
00:51:07Boom.
00:51:08Perfect.
00:51:09Awesome.
00:51:10Looks pretty cool, hey?
00:51:11I love it because it's like mixing of two worlds.
00:51:14Yeah.
00:51:14Right?
00:51:15You've got the primitive survival, and then you've got urban survival.
00:51:19Yeah.
00:51:21Nice.
00:51:22This area here I think is a really good spot.
00:51:34I always see guineas moving through this.
00:51:37The style of snare I'm going to do, it's a spring pole snare, but it's actually called an African bird snare.
00:51:43Pretty much invented four guineas.
00:51:45A spring pole snare uses a noose tied to a bent sapling for tension.
00:51:49It's then tied to a trigger stick that is anchored under an exposed root and propped up with a bait stick.
00:51:56When the guineafowl disturbs the bait stick, it triggers the trap, tightening the noose around the bird.
00:52:02There's my loop.
00:52:05It's all woven in there.
00:52:07So I made these snares with my pawnee bark, and I'm going to scratch the ground out as I make this to make it look like something's been in there digging.
00:52:17And that usually drives scratching birds nuts.
00:52:20It makes them think that somebody's getting something that they're not, so they go over there and scratch it.
00:52:26And then this is my bait stick right here.
00:52:29This is the trigger of the whole trap.
00:52:31I got a big old cricket.
00:52:34I'm going to go out of my way to put as much guinea delicious-y goodness on this thing as I can.
00:52:40I want him to be like, ah, look at what I just found.
00:52:44And then quick try to eat it before his buddy's noticed.
00:52:48And his greed will be his downfall.
00:52:51He's going to peck at this.
00:52:55And then boom, you get a guinea.
00:52:58All right, that's one trap done.
00:53:01On to trap number two.
00:53:03Our firewood supply is getting kind of low.
00:53:10Right, you've got loads of wood.
00:53:12That sounds good.
00:53:13Wood hydrates and a few snacks of jerky.
00:53:15Yeah, I like the sound of that.
00:53:17Where we just walked through, it looked like there was tons of wood.
00:53:19Yeah, I've seen that.
00:53:20Out here when you're surviving, you have to have firewood inside your shelter at all times, especially at night.
00:53:27Because whether it's rain coming in or it's big predators coming close, if we hear our trip line go off, then we can build up our fire a little bit.
00:53:37Get a little more smoke in the air just to further protect ourselves.
00:53:40All right, that's a pile there.
00:53:46Give us a chance to get that fire going.
00:53:49Flare up a little.
00:53:49That is it now.
00:53:52Me and Wes have just settled into the shelter.
00:53:56Now I feel like we need to be more alert and ready for anything.
00:54:01Because these are going to start coming and prowling because we've got meat and guts on each side of our shelter.
00:54:08Loves his jerky.
00:54:09Look at that man.
00:54:10How do you not get tired of it?
00:54:15It's a sneak.
00:54:18Right next to you.
00:54:19Oh my God.
00:54:20For the camera.
00:54:21F***ing hell.
00:54:23That's a f***ing black momma there too.
00:54:25Is it?
00:54:26Yep.
00:54:27Holy crap.
00:54:29Don't move, don't move.
00:54:38It's a sneak.
00:54:39Right next to you.
00:54:40Oh my God.
00:54:41Black momma.
00:54:42F***ing hell.
00:54:42Oh man, that's scary as s***.
00:54:46It looks like he's just crawling up a boma.
00:54:48Yep.
00:54:49We've got a black momma in our boma.
00:54:52She'll be dead in 15 minutes with you, bit by one of them.
00:54:54Yeah.
00:54:55F***ing right there.
00:54:57Oh s***.
00:54:58Just come on.
00:54:59That's a f***ing black momma.
00:55:01Holy crap.
00:55:02That could hit you in the head, though.
00:55:04You'd be dead.
00:55:05Where did he come from?
00:55:07Did he come out of a log?
00:55:08I have no idea.
00:55:10F***ing move quick as well.
00:55:12Yeah.
00:55:12Did it go underneath, didn't it?
00:55:14Yeah, it crawled right underneath there.
00:55:17And after that, I have no idea.
00:55:20Oh man, thank you for spotting it, buddy.
00:55:23F***ing, that was a bit of a scare.
00:55:25Yeah, that was a lot of a scare.
00:55:27And it's going to get pitch black soon.
00:55:29Oh man.
00:55:31We need to ash that ever-loving hell out of this.
00:55:34Yeah.
00:55:35Get some hot numbers in there.
00:55:36Just here or throw them under there.
00:55:40All under.
00:55:41As cold-blooded reptiles, snakes seek shade from extreme heat in order to cool their body
00:55:48temperature, so spreading warm ash can help deter them.
00:55:51You might have saved my life right there.
00:55:53No joke.
00:55:54You might have saved my life.
00:55:56Hey, that was a close call.
00:55:57Hold on.
00:55:58That was a really close call.
00:55:59It was a foot away from you?
00:56:01Yeah.
00:56:01It's a black mamba.
00:56:02He bites you and you're dead.
00:56:04And he was in our shelter.
00:56:06We don't know how far he went, but we threw burning ash in there and coals.
00:56:12And then ashed the doorway really good.
00:56:15He won't come back, hopefully.
00:56:18It's probably sleeping in the mall.
00:56:20Don't say that.
00:56:21Please don't say that.
00:56:23Just almost turned deadly.
00:56:27I don't know if I'll sleep tonight.
00:56:32I'm on the edge right now, man.
00:56:41Yeah, I don't feel good over here at all.
00:56:43How many things are going to happen to us?
00:56:46Lion comes through camp, and then I have a damn black mamba with a foot from my head?
00:56:51That's a scary one, eh?
00:56:53Black mamba's lunge at you.
00:56:55So you stand up basically and lunge.
00:56:58Very, very scary.
00:57:00That's got a bit real, eh, don't it?
00:57:01I was feeling any weaker or anything like that.
00:57:04Just a little mentally bad.
00:57:06I've been gone.
00:57:08Yeah, I got some praying to do tonight.
00:57:10That was scary.
00:57:13I'm scared, you mom.
00:57:15Not worth it.
00:57:16Get me the f*** out of here.
00:57:17I'm looking for a man.
00:57:18God damn, man.
00:57:36I'm tired.
00:57:38Right now, I'm back to being weak.
00:57:40Not just weak, but, like, worried.
00:57:43So I built some fishing line.
00:57:44And that's what I hope is going to pay off so that I don't have to keep going days without eating.
00:57:50And we're going to take a scorpion.
00:57:54There we go.
00:57:55Now we've got a baited hook.
00:58:00The line's super heavy.
00:58:02It's wire.
00:58:03So I'm going to try and use a Y-stick here to prop it up in the water.
00:58:08Well, I set the line.
00:58:16Scorpion's on there.
00:58:17I'll leave this in here overnight.
00:58:19See if the scorpion gets eaten.
00:58:21You may get lucky.
00:58:22You may get a starving catfish in hopes of a scorpion meal.
00:58:27So we'll see what happens.
00:58:30I think I see a bunch of frogs here.
00:58:33Tons of frogs.
00:58:34They're poisonous, but maybe I can use them as bait, too.
00:58:38Let's see how quick they are.
00:58:44Got a little poisonous white frog.
00:58:47I can bait the catfish trap.
00:58:49And then hopefully that'll be more enticing than just that old bone.
00:58:53They need something new on the menu.
00:58:58Nursing, nursing, nursing.
00:59:00Okay.
00:59:02All right.
00:59:04So, you got a dangly gutted frog.
00:59:09That looks awesome.
00:59:12And we'll see if that gets us a yield.
00:59:19I have really high hopes for that trap now yielding with that frog.
00:59:22And if I come check in the morning and it has fish in it,
00:59:26and guess what?
00:59:26I'm putting another frog in there.
00:59:28You know, it's like,
00:59:28if that's going to yield me more than this makeshift fishing line,
00:59:32that would be an amazing score.
00:59:34It's starting to get a little blackout.
00:59:51Jesus, it's getting dangerous to stand up.
00:59:59Kept getting really lightheaded,
01:00:01almost to the point where I'm losing track of where I'm at,
01:00:06what I'm doing.
01:00:07I'm afraid that I don't have the guts to ride this out this far.
01:00:16Come on, Joe.
01:00:19Keep it together.
01:00:20Keep it together.
01:00:33Say what, Wes?
01:00:34You can see your spine now.
01:00:36We need to get you some fish.
01:00:38Yeah.
01:00:38Last night, sleep was a little rough.
01:00:42I had thoughts about that black mamba all night.
01:00:45They talk about getting rattled.
01:00:47Yeah, that thing bites you and you're dead.
01:00:50When something like that happens,
01:00:52you have a moment of reflection and you go,
01:00:54what in the hell am I doing here?
01:00:56I might not ever see my family again.
01:00:58I'm starting to get a bit worried about me partner.
01:01:09It was just a bit of a shock and brought this challenge to real life
01:01:12that there's things out here that want to kill you.
01:01:15That's all I think.
01:01:16He's really struggling with it.
01:01:23Good to go.
01:01:26Yeah.
01:01:28Yeah, I got hit with being very tired for some reason.
01:01:36Nobody needs to.
01:01:37I guess.
01:01:39I guess.
01:01:40Are you okay?
01:01:44Um, I don't know.
01:01:48No, I don't know.
01:01:58Let's go check some bird snares.
01:02:03Now, let's see.
01:02:05This one is still set and the bait is still there.
01:02:09I just don't think they've been by it.
01:02:11I just haven't seen it yet.
01:02:13Okay, so the second one is right up here.
01:02:16Let's go see if we still got bait in this one.
01:02:18Well, that one's still set.
01:02:24Nothing.
01:02:25You know, our traps, we got them out there.
01:02:30It's just a matter of time.
01:02:31So, I'm going to explore around a little bit and maybe try to find something to eat.
01:02:37It is very important to keep exploring your area because that's how you find things.
01:02:44Like, everything's moving out here.
01:02:45This is a fluid environment, you know, including the plants.
01:02:49The plants are moving.
01:02:50They're moving up.
01:02:52But, uh, this looks like a little, uh, scorpion hole.
01:02:59Let's see if anybody's home.
01:03:05Something's grabbing this, see?
01:03:08There's a scorpion in this hole.
01:03:11Yeah.
01:03:12Look at the pinch marks on it.
01:03:15I want to dig it out.
01:03:19I mean, obviously the thing is dangerous, but I still got to catch it.
01:03:23Even small protein sources that are fresh are worth its weight in gold.
01:03:28This is going to take a second because I don't want them to go too deep.
01:03:33There are over 130 different species of scorpion in South Africa.
01:03:37To escape extreme heat and avoid predators, many create underground burrows.
01:03:43Digging anywhere from a few inches to three feet deep.
01:03:47If disturbed, their neurotoxic venom can cause intense pain, muscle paralysis, and potential respiratory failure.
01:03:55Oh, and I see it.
01:03:59All right, okay, here he is.
01:04:01I got him.
01:04:03Let's get him out now.
01:04:06Ooh, he is not happy.
01:04:10Oh, there he is.
01:04:12Okay.
01:04:12So, and here is how you deal with these guys.
01:04:19Like this.
01:04:23He's not happy.
01:04:26Now, this won't kill you, but you're not going to enjoy the sting from it.
01:04:29I've been stung by several scorpions in the United States, and it can hurt from anywhere from 30 minutes to three days.
01:04:38So, now that I know I can do this, and they're not that deep, I could probably dig out 30 of these guys and just, like, eat them like popcorn and chicken.
01:04:50It's crucial that we find another source of protein out here.
01:04:54And every little bit adds up when you're waiting on a big kill.
01:04:58So now it's time to go get my team and get after these guys.
01:05:01Oh, more firewood.
01:05:14Good.
01:05:15It got really cold last night.
01:05:16Yeah, it did.
01:05:18We're halfway through this challenge, and today is definitely a hunting day.
01:05:23So, Teo, she's determined.
01:05:25I like it.
01:05:26I hope it pays off, because she hasn't had that perfect opportunity yet.
01:05:31But I'm sure when it comes, she's going to make the most of it.
01:05:45Oh, yeah.
01:05:50I think it might be a juvenile duiker heading straight up for the field, right where the blind is.
01:05:57Hey, Teal, I can see something about three-quarters of the way up to the farmhouse up there.
01:06:04It looks like a little duck or something, but it's moving around slow.
01:06:06Do you want to go, do you want to take the bone arrow up there and see, see if you can get it?
01:06:11Duck is tasty.
01:06:12Yeah, let me check it out.
01:06:15Aim small, miss small.
01:06:16Getting within, you know, 20 yards of an animal and feeling confident on a shot is, you know, makes me a little nervous.
01:06:28But when the opportunity presents itself, just take the shot, because what's the worst thing that could happen?
01:06:34Okay, I don't see it.
01:06:40Maybe I will soon.
01:06:45Maybe it's still hanging around and just taking cover.
01:06:48It's hiding from me.
01:06:50I want to startle it.
01:06:51I see him.
01:06:55Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, I see him, I see him.
01:06:58I'm looking at this duiker, and it's sitting there, staring at me.
01:07:02Maybe this thing is sick or heat exhausted.
01:07:05It seems a little disoriented.
01:07:07But you don't get many shots out here, and you rarely get one that's as sure as this.
01:07:17He's such a small target.
01:07:18I don't want to get too close, because I don't want to startle him.
01:07:40He's such a small target.
01:07:43I don't want to get too close, because I don't want to startle him.
01:07:48Definitely got him.
01:07:59Oh, he's not feeling good.
01:08:02Oh, God.
01:08:03Thank you, sweet thing.
01:08:13He's not going anywhere.
01:08:14Just rest.
01:08:22Just close your eyes and rest.
01:08:23It's okay.
01:08:25I saw you shooting at something, too.
01:08:27How'd it go?
01:08:28Yeah, I got him in the chest.
01:08:32You good?
01:08:34Yeah, I'm okay.
01:08:34Okay.
01:08:34I'm proud of you for getting that shot on target.
01:08:46A little bit of that practice, and look how it's better.
01:08:50I thought he was going to get away.
01:08:54Just wait here, too.
01:08:55Let me check it real quick.
01:08:55Yep.
01:09:01It's obviously dead.
01:09:08You good, Kim?
01:09:09Yeah, I'm fine.
01:09:12Just one of those things about survival is, you know, this is part of what we do, and part of how it all works.
01:09:20It sucks.
01:09:21Like, I feel as bad as anyone else.
01:09:25I'm not naive.
01:09:25I know where my food comes from.
01:09:27Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:09:27I just don't like this part.
01:09:29Yeah, yeah.
01:09:30I get it.
01:09:32I get it.
01:09:34It's unfortunate, but...
01:09:36Yeah.
01:09:37We'll get a little bit more food, which is a positive spin on it.
01:09:41We just need to get past this.
01:09:43Get past this little bit, you know?
01:09:44Yeah.
01:09:46I'll carry it down here, and we'll field dress it down there under the tree again.
01:09:51It'll be a lot easier this time.
01:09:53We're going to get this meat ready.
01:09:54We're not going to waste one bit of this.
01:09:56We've got a process we're going to follow.
01:09:59We're going to get the guts out.
01:10:00We're going to save all this meat, cook some up, eat some, and jerky some.
01:10:06I was able to shoot the diker, but I don't feel so great.
01:10:09But it's just hard to do it, and even aiming and taking the shot, I feel like my brain is just, like, miss.
01:10:18We don't have a choice.
01:10:19We have still more than two weeks to go, and we have to eat, but it's still really hard.
01:10:28Watching Teal get emotional, it's something I've experienced before.
01:10:31It's something I definitely understand.
01:10:33You're taking something's life, but in an apocalyptic environment, this is a real thing that we need to do as survivalists.
01:10:41So you have to pay respect as much as you can, doing the right thing by the animal once it's been harvested,
01:10:46by just getting as much of that resource out of the animal's body as possible.
01:10:53It's just hard.
01:10:54Should we start looking for scorpions?
01:11:04Yeah.
01:11:10Yep, yep, got one.
01:11:11Are you in there?
01:11:12Yeah.
01:11:13See?
01:11:13Oh, yeah, he's in there.
01:11:15Oh, yeah.
01:11:17We need food.
01:11:17We need protein.
01:11:18So we've got a bunch of scorpions we're going to dig up for a little scorpion popcorn party.
01:11:24Oh, yeah.
01:11:27I think that might be him right there.
01:11:30Got him.
01:11:30See a big one?
01:11:31Yeah, it's not real big.
01:11:34Hey.
01:11:38Let's cut the stinger off.
01:11:41Boom.
01:11:42Perfect.
01:11:43Amazing.
01:11:44Scorpion!
01:11:46Oh, wow.
01:11:47Scorpion.
01:11:48One down.
01:11:49Oh.
01:11:50Is there any meat on a scorpion?
01:11:51Yeah.
01:11:51Probably eight grams of protein in one.
01:11:54Really?
01:11:54Scorpions actually have more protein per weight than any mammal, any bird, any snake or reptile
01:12:01or amphibian.
01:12:03So we're looking for at least, we're looking for nine, aren't we?
01:12:05Ooh, are we going that hard?
01:12:06Yeah, we have three a piece.
01:12:08Oh, okay.
01:12:08All right.
01:12:09Goodness.
01:12:09Okay.
01:12:10Beast.
01:12:10So even though they're not the most appetizing, as far as nutritional value, it's top notch.
01:12:15At this point, I'm excited about eating anything at all.
01:12:18Ooh, without taking the stinger off.
01:12:21Use the other end.
01:12:23And you'll feel it and bite it.
01:12:25It's like you're scorpion fishing.
01:12:26There's one in here?
01:12:27Yeah?
01:12:27Yeah.
01:12:33All right.
01:12:34Can't let all you boys have all the fun, you know?
01:12:38There she is.
01:12:39This is crazy.
01:12:41Scorpion kebab.
01:12:42All right.
01:12:43Six to go.
01:12:44Whoop, whoop.
01:12:56Oh, mama.
01:12:57I'm so sorry.
01:12:59After I got the kill, I felt really conflicted.
01:13:02I felt kind of like accomplished, but also kind of sad.
01:13:09It's difficult, but being able to provide a meal to my team is an act of care, and it's
01:13:16important, and I want to be here for it because I want to be able to be that provider as well.
01:13:22That's good.
01:13:22We're going to have some red meat in our bellies, which is awesome.
01:13:28Teal getting a dyker was emotionally draining on her, but if Teal hadn't found this thing
01:13:34when she did, it wouldn't have taken many minutes before something else was eating it.
01:13:39So, you know, unfortunately, this one lost its life, but we're going to be able to get
01:13:44a lot out of this thing, so it's a godsend.
01:13:47The heart right there, that's going to be a good little bit.
01:13:51We've got to eat the back straps, period.
01:13:53100%.
01:13:53We're eating the back strap, eating the heart, eating the kidneys.
01:13:57And then we'll just strip the strips of meat away from the legs and string them up.
01:14:02And we'll smoke them.
01:14:04Just got to take this one last leg off when we're done.
01:14:07We're definitely in a place where if we had to, we could go all the way to 35 with just
01:14:12the meat that we have right now.
01:14:14It's a safety net we can fall back on if we have to.
01:14:16We're going to get the smoker cracking.
01:14:20The last time we used the smoker in the rain, it was hard keeping the coals alive and keeping
01:14:25the temperature up.
01:14:26We might have a bit of a better grasp on it this time, just in relation to controlling
01:14:31the temperature.
01:14:32Here we go.
01:14:35Nice, fresh red meat.
01:14:38We should be able to turn a lot of this into the jerky before the sun goes down.
01:14:41And we're going to eat some as well, which is going to be great.
01:14:44It's going to get a nice little cook on it.
01:14:46All right.
01:14:58Check my fish traps.
01:15:00Let's see if there's anything in them.
01:15:02I'm just so depleted right now.
01:15:05It's day 18 of the challenge.
01:15:06Pretty hungry.
01:15:07I can't even remember the last time I had catfish.
01:15:09The two step forward, one step back of surviving this apocalyptic landscape is taking a toll.
01:15:15So I'm hoping the scorpion at least got chewed up.
01:15:18Let's see if scorpion is an effective bait.
01:15:21Yeah, nothing, nothing really doing here.
01:15:28That's a bummer.
01:15:30So the scorpion was eaten.
01:15:32All right.
01:15:35Just spit out the hook.
01:15:37So they will take the scorpion bait.
01:15:40All right.
01:15:41But now the big one.
01:15:45I'm really hoping this yields because we have fresh bait.
01:15:50But, you know, they like stinky rotten stuff.
01:15:52So it could just end up taking a few days for this frog to get real gross.
01:15:58And then they will be like, yes, please.
01:16:01And they'll line up to come in here.
01:16:03Come on, baby.
01:16:18Ah, nothing says team bonding like a family dinner of scorpion shish kebab.
01:16:26Arachnids on a stick.
01:16:28You really want to hear that crackle pop.
01:16:30That's usually when their guts kind of explode inside of them.
01:16:34That's when you know that their innards are boiling.
01:16:37Sounds super appetizing.
01:16:38We found about nine scorpions.
01:16:40This wind isn't physically huge, but it is mentally huge.
01:16:45We got our scorps.
01:16:48Team building.
01:16:50Team alpha.
01:16:51On the tongue.
01:16:53Mmm.
01:16:55Mmm.
01:16:55Oh, it's rough.
01:17:01Yeah.
01:17:02That one had dirt in it.
01:17:05Pretty sure that's sand.
01:17:06It's all crunch.
01:17:07It was just exoskeleton and dirt and Africa in your mouth.
01:17:13Yeah, that was weird.
01:17:13Oh, there we go.
01:17:24We got a terrapin stuck in there.
01:17:27Absolutely incredible.
01:17:31Dog.
01:17:32All I know is I have a source of protein, and that makes me feel good.
01:17:37It's a good amount of meat.
01:17:39In these apocalyptic times, you're a meal.
01:17:44And I'm super stoked about it.
01:17:53I think this is an old fan cover.
01:17:56I found this in the ruins the other day.
01:17:58All right, now we're cooking them.
01:18:02All right.
01:18:06I feel proud.
01:18:07I feel proud about my trap working.
01:18:09It's so good to be getting a meal.
01:18:11It actually makes me feel stronger, knowing that my body's going to get a little bit of nourishment.
01:18:18I haven't eaten anything in probably more than a week now.
01:18:21I needed some food.
01:18:22I was starting to waste away.
01:18:24So I know it's only about, you know, big of my hand, but it's a meal.
01:18:33Wow.
01:18:35That's pleasant.
01:18:43That's really good, actually.
01:18:45A terrapin this size will yield about five ounces of meat and provide the same amount of protein as a beef burger patty.
01:18:52That is good for me.
01:18:53You know, out here, little things like this are competent boosters, you know, and I fully need it today.
01:19:04You know, I need that confidence right now going forward with trying to hunt and acquire a bigger meal.
01:19:10You know, that's my number one goal right now.
01:19:12And if I get that, then I'm going to be able to ride through this challenge.
01:19:17Be ready to rock and roll.
01:19:18All right.
01:19:18All right.
01:19:18All right.
01:19:18All right.
01:19:18All right.
01:19:18All right.
01:19:18All right.
01:19:19All right.
01:19:19All right.
01:19:20All right.
01:19:20All right.
01:19:21All right.
01:19:22All right.
01:19:23All right.
01:19:23All right.
01:19:23All right.
01:19:53All right.
01:19:53to be standing here eating not just eating but eating fresh which are really nice hey i think
01:20:03all the hard work we put in eventually turned our luck you know yep into something you harvested
01:20:11more than halfway through the challenge and i must admit we've made a pretty darn good living
01:20:16for ourselves we have a great shelter a massive amount of food and we're feeling like we're pros
01:20:22i can't believe how well we're thriving we're so set up now still good
01:20:34all the work is done that duker is processed uh the meat is hanging up inside the smoker
01:20:42flames at the bottom smoke coming up and we have where is that sun at one and a half hours before
01:20:49the sun touches the horizon so probably two hours of work here we can get this probably to a place
01:20:56in two hours where we can just take it and hang it inside then i don't have to worry about it overnight
01:21:00which would be perfect so we've got all this meat down near the boma that could invite scavengers in
01:21:06overnight so it's just about keeping that stuff away from the predators in the area cheers
01:21:24the wind outside is kicking so i started a little comfort fire here well i started all this uh
01:21:36diker meat outside and got it really nice and smoked now we're moving it inside over our fire
01:21:43you know you're doing well on a challenge when you have a meat chandelier inside the shelter also we've
01:21:52got full bellies right now so full to the top lots of red meat in us lots of energy lots of forward
