00:00So we're here tonight to talk about Irvine's new book, his 13th novel and his 17th work of fiction.

00:07On top of that, he's now a DJ, has his work adapted for radio, TV, film and theatre.

00:13Welsh has produced many imitators but few equals and he has outlasted them all.

00:21I mean Trainspotting is not my best book but it's the one I'll be remembered by, you know what I mean?

00:25Yeah, I never liked it.

00:27The characters that you create are all different aspects of you.

00:31You got off heroin, you got off all the shit but did the writing solve that? Are you happy now?

00:35I'm worried that I'm morphing into one of these writers that I used to detest.

00:41And you are in.

00:46He said when we embarked on this great adventure together that lots of laughter was essential in the relationship.

00:57I always saw life as a big canvas that unfolds and I don't think you should be limited to any one place.

01:09Life is a dynamic rather than a static process.

01:13When you're young you feel that life is trying to confine you in some ways.

01:18Increasingly life seems fractured.

01:22I like to challenge and annoy and disturb and irritate myself in the writing.

01:28I'm more of a warrior than you'll ever be.

01:33You compromise more when you get older and it's not always a good thing.

01:42We are all connected to a greater force.

01:45There's different realities contained within us all.

01:49And writing is a way of finding some of these different realities.
