Malaysia remains heavily reliant on imported food despite gains in local production, said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
Citing the Statistics Department’s Self-Sufficiency Ratio (SSR) 2023 report, he said Malaysia’s self-sufficiency level for rice stood at 56.2% and chicken at 90.2%, both slightly lower than in previous years.
To strengthen food security, Mohamad said the government is enhancing paddy and rice industry mechanisms and expanding cattle breeding and ruminant development programmes to reach 50% self-sufficiency in beef by 2030.
