00:00Anthony Hopkins has everything most actors could ever dream of.
00:03Oscars, worldwide fame, and a legendary career.
00:06But there's one thing even he couldn't achieve.
00:09Mending his broken relationship with his only daughter.
00:11The 87-year-old star has one child.
00:14Abigail, who's now 57.
00:18Anthony shares her with his first wife, Petronella Barker.
00:21But their relationship fell apart decades ago.
00:24In fact, Hopkins once admitted that he hadn't been a good father.
00:28The two have reportedly been estranged for more than 20 years.
00:31And it doesn't look like that's changing anytime soon.
00:34I love being on my own.
00:35I love being a recluse.
00:37I'm not a recluse, but I love being on my own.
00:40Hopkins did try to reach out, though.
00:42More than two decades ago, his wife, Stella, sent Abigail an invitation to visit them.
00:47But there was no reply.
00:48When asked about it now, the actor said he's done holding on to resentment.
00:52Not a word of response, so I thought,
00:54Okay, fine. I wish her well, he explained.
00:57But I'm not going to waste blood over that.
00:59So I get over that.
01:01That's Anthony Hopkins in his usual brutally honest tone.
01:07He said he refuses to live stuck in the past or in bitterness.
01:11If you want to waste your life being in resentment, fine, go ahead, he said.
01:16But that's not in my camp.
01:18You have to acknowledge one thing.
01:20We're imperfect.
01:21We do the best we can.
01:22Life is painful.
01:23Sometimes people get hurt.
01:25But you can't live like that forever.
01:27You have to say, get over it.
01:30Be kind to yourself.
01:32Pretty direct, right?
01:33And when asked if he hoped Abigail might read his new memoir, Hopkins said he didn't really care.
01:38Not out of anger, but because he's already moved on.
01:41I don't want to hurt her, he said.
01:43The offer was made.
01:45Onwards.
01:46Abigail was born in 1968.
01:48And Hopkins separated from her mother when she was just a few years old.
01:52After that, he went on to remarry.
01:54Twice.
01:55He and his second wife, Jennifer Linton, were together for nearly 30 years before he married his current wife, Stella Arroyave, in 2003.
02:05There was a brief moment in the 90s when it seemed like things might improve.
02:09Hopkins arranged for Abigail to appear in his films Shadowlands and The Remains of the Day.
02:15But that reconnection didn't last.
02:16By 2018, Hopkins said he didn't even know if he had grandchildren.
02:21And when a journalist told him that sounded cold, he didn't deny it.
02:25Well, it is cold, he replied.
02:27Because life is cold.
02:29Abigail has shared her own perspective, too.
02:32In a 2006 interview, she said she used to see her father maybe once a year while growing up.
02:38Abigail admitted it made her sad, but she tried to move on.
02:41Still, she mentioned she was open to reconciliation.
02:44But only if it went both ways.
02:47It would have to be a two-way thing, Abigail said.
02:50We've never really been close.
02:52We've never discussed big life issues.
02:54And maybe that's the hardest part.
02:56When two people want peace but can't find their way back to each other.
02:59It was a conversation with God that helped Hopkins overcome one of his life's greatest struggles.
03:04His parents weren't religious.
03:05But many, many years ago, Hopkins entertained the idea of becoming a Catholic.
03:11He got in touch with a priest who also happened to be a psychiatrist.
03:14The said priest realized that Hopkins couldn't name a reason to dive into religion and was too busy battling alcoholism.
03:22So he advised the actor to just enjoy his life.
03:25One day, after yet another alcohol-infused night, Hopkins woke up in a hotel in Phoenix, Arizona and couldn't remember how he'd gotten there.
03:34It was time to seek help.
03:36If you were an actor, what do you think you'd have done?
03:40Drunk myself to death, probably.
03:41So, when at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, a woman advised him to trust in God, Hopkins tried to.
03:49Now, he says, he's come to understand that there is something out there vaster than himself.
03:54Yes, I call it God.
03:56And yes, I do believe in it.
03:58And yes, I am now happier than I have ever been.
04:01Unfortunately, Sir Anthony's days of heavy drinking heavily impacted his only child.
04:06Abigail Hopkins attributed her suicidal behavior, drinking, and drug problems to the intermittent
04:11relationship with her father.
04:13Abigail was just 14 months old when her father, then a short-tempered and deeply unbalanced man,
04:20walked out on her and her mother.
04:21I was angry and there was a lot of grieving going on, she said.
04:25She went on to become a singer-songwriter, actress, and acting coach.
04:29Yes, it all in the genes.
04:32For you see, Sir Anthony trained to be a concert pianist prior to his acting career and has composed
04:38several pieces of music.
04:39Like, father and daughter reunited briefly in the 90s and even acted together, but couldn't
04:44work past their issues.
04:46They have since lost all contact.
04:48I guess we are estranged.
04:50I hope she is well, Hopkins Sr. said in one of his interviews.
04:54In another, he remarked how families break up and people make and stick to their choices.
05:00He did his best, Hopkins says, but his daughter chose not to be part of his life.
05:04Does he know or care if Abigail has made him a grandfather?
05:08No, he doesn't.
05:10Is there a chance of a future reconciliation?
05:13Abigail Hopkins, now 57, did say she wasn't opposed to it, but only if it were a two-way
05:18thing.
05:19In his recent interview with his Legends of the Fall and Meet Joe Black co-star Brad Pitt,
05:24Hopkins admitted he has done some bad things in his life, but learned to embrace his mistakes.
05:28His mantra?
05:29Forget it.
05:31Just move on.
05:33Hopkins refuses to talk about his estranged daughter and refuses to talk about politics.
05:38Actors are pretty stupid.
05:39My opinion is not worth anything.
05:42There's no controversy for me, he says.
05:45There is one meaningful thing that keeps Hopkins out of trouble and, as he says, off the streets.
05:50It's painting.
05:51His now-wife Stella found his amateur drawings and asked if he could do some pictures for,
05:55say, a party gift.
05:56She was eager to get him to paint, so he got a studio.
06:00An artist friend commented that Hopkins doesn't need any lessons or academic training.
06:04When people ask Hopkins about his artistic vision, he just shrugs.
06:07Ooh.
06:09But.
06:10I don't have any vision.
06:11I go in, look at the canvas, and just plop paint on it.
06:15Life is a canvas for Sir Anthony Hopkins, and he continues plopping paint on it.

06:22What is your favorite Hopkins-led movie?
06:24For many, it's The Father, the film that earned him his second Oscar in 2021 for Best
06:29Actor.
06:30Sir Anthony played the role of an elderly man struggling with Alzheimer's in the film The
06:34Father.
06:35The heart-wrenching performance earned him another Academy Award, but it seems like the
06:39actor was not prepared for his own victory.
06:42The aging star had taken the day to visit his father's graveyard, then tucked into bed for
06:47a good night's rest.
06:48That's right.
06:50Hopkins was fast asleep at his home in Wales as his name was being called out, with no
06:54intention of making a virtual appearance, as he probably had no idea he would take the
06:59award home.
07:00The actor surprisingly woke up to the news of his success.
07:04Here's what he had to say about it.
07:05Well, here I am in my homeland in Wales, and at 83 years of age, I did not expect to get
07:13this award.
07:14I really didn't.
07:15And I'm very grateful to the Academy and thank you.
07:20And I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who's taken from us far too early.
07:27And again, thank you all very much.
07:33Really did not expect this.
07:36So I feel very privileged and honored.
