00:00:00The fire's cracklin' and the popcorn's strung.
00:00:08Bulbs are twinklin' and the stockings are hung.
00:00:12So much fun doing Christmas by the book.
00:00:16We're doing Christmas.
00:00:23By the book.
00:00:30Oh, oh, oh.
00:00:34How are you doing?
00:00:35I'm a little nervous, if I'm honest.
00:00:38I haven't done one of these before.
00:00:39You'll be great.
00:00:40You know your material frontwards and backwards.
00:00:42You're genuine.
00:00:43You've got this.
00:00:45Thanks.
00:00:47Remind me never to release a book at the same time as a local best-selling author.
00:00:50Hey, Annie.
00:00:52This is gonna be fun.
00:00:54Come on.
00:00:55Let's get started, shall we?
00:01:00Adelaide Wilson, welcome to the podcast.
00:01:02It's great to finally meet you.
00:01:04Thank you for having me.
00:01:05Please call me Addie.
00:01:07Addie, ooh, besties already.
00:01:09Listen, we're live, so let's just jump right in, okay?
00:01:13This book is quite humbling.
00:01:16And here I thought having gifts bought and wrapped by December 23rd was crushing Christmas.
00:01:20It's not meant to add more stress to the season, but to alleviate it by taking away the guesswork with tried and true methods.
00:01:28You have chapters in here dedicated to decorating, hosting, cooking.
00:01:33You've meticulously planned out every detail of the holiday season starting November 1st.
00:01:38I realize there's often debate about Christmas prep before Thanksgiving, but coming at it from the point of view of large families or homes that need a little more time with the financial implications of the season, it makes sense to start early.
00:01:53And speaking of the financial aspects of the holiday season, you have a chapter in here called Christmas on a Budget.
00:01:59Why did you feel the need to add this?
00:02:01It was important.
00:02:03The message is that Christmas doesn't need to be elaborate to be special, and that making the effort is truly what matters.
00:02:12Hmm.
00:02:13Now you know a little something about that, don't you?
00:02:18Um, we're live.
00:02:21Um, as a child, Christmases in my family were quite simple.
00:02:28Yes.
00:02:29And sometimes there was no Christmas at all, right?
00:02:34Uh.
00:02:36Which is why I try to enjoy it to the fullest now.
00:02:41I have three Christmas trees in my home this year, all decorated in different themes.
00:02:47Your book tour starts here next week in Washington, and you have 12 U.S. stops along the way, right?
00:02:54Safe travels, Addie, and I wish your book all the success.
00:02:57I'm Trish with the Bummer Bee Podcast, here with Edelon Wilson, author of A Christmas Season Handbook.

00:03:07Bye-bye for now.
00:03:08Oh, I have to catch this.
00:03:13Hi.
00:03:14Hi.
00:03:15Hey, girl.
00:03:16Yeah, I just finished the interview.
00:03:20I'm so sorry she went off script from the pre-approved questions.
00:03:23It's fine.
00:03:24Is it also fine that we've added an additional stop to the tour?
00:03:2912.
00:03:30As in the 12 days of Christmas.
00:03:32It's on all the bookstore posters advertised in the signings.
00:03:35I know.
00:03:36It's just that this store has been selected to host the national synchronized Christmas Eve reading of Twas the Night Before Christmas.
00:03:42So they're getting quite a bit of press.
00:03:45And since Red Ribbon Publishing is a major sponsor of the event, I thought we could piggyback off that.
00:03:51So I guess I don't have much of a choice.
00:03:57Which store is it?
00:03:58It's the Alpine Bookstore in Illinois.
00:04:00Okay, these should be on the front table for the holiday season.
00:04:20Do you really think this book signing is a good idea?
00:04:23Uh, yeah.
00:04:25We need all the holiday events we can get before year end.
00:04:27But we're already hosting the synchronized reading event on Christmas Eve.
00:04:31That's creating a buzz.
00:04:32We are up against the big box stores, okay?
00:04:34No buzzes too big.
00:04:37Wow.
00:04:39Your bookkeeping skills are truly a wonder.
00:04:43Wasn't a compliment.
00:04:46Garth, look.
00:04:49I hate to be the one to tell you this, but if you don't have a successful Christmas selling season,
00:04:54I don't see the store being here next year.
00:04:56It's not that bad.
00:04:58No, it's worse.
00:05:01You're bankrolling this company on savings and haven't made money in almost two years.
00:05:07I mean, the store is just a sucking sound on its best days.
00:05:11I get it.
00:05:12Do you?
00:05:14Look, baby brother.
00:05:16While the rest of us have had to slum it in corporate America, your Olympic athlete days have afforded you the luxury and the flexibility of just doing what you love, which is great.
00:05:28But if you don't start taking the business side more seriously, like in this changing climate, dude, you're going to end up in a nine-to-five office job that will literally kill you.
00:05:41I just don't feel the need to turn the store into something that it isn't.
00:05:45Selling other items like blankets and knickknacks.
00:05:48I know, I'm not saying to expand the inventory beyond books, but, you know, people would want to stay here longer if there was like a cafe attached serving drinks.
00:05:58We need a food operating license for that just another headache.
00:06:01Okay, well, I don't know, a seating area maybe?
00:06:05I have a seating area.
00:06:11That, that's your seating area?
00:06:12Okay.
00:06:13Uh, well, maybe a more comfortable seating area?
00:06:18Perhaps one with furniture that wasn't salvaged from the dumpsters out back?
00:06:22First you say we're in trouble financially, and then you give me gears for trying to save money.
00:06:26Look, just hear me out, okay?
00:06:29I've been putting some ideas to paper.
00:06:33I know you don't like this kind of thing, but you could help.
00:06:38So, actually, I gotta take this one.
00:06:40Of course you do.
00:06:44There she is, future doctor on the screen.
00:06:46Hey, Dad.
00:06:47Hi, Luna.
00:06:48Hi, Mel.
00:06:49They're ready?
00:06:50Yeah, thought I'd come a week early this year.
00:06:53Thought your dad could use some help with the National Synchronized Reading Event prep.
00:06:57Probably a good idea.
00:06:57I'm gonna ignore the implication.
00:07:00How did the exam go?
00:07:01Good, I think.
00:07:04Maybe.
00:07:05I don't know.
00:07:06I should have studied more.
00:07:08That would have been impossible.
00:07:09You barely slept all week.
00:07:10I can sleep when I'm home for the holidays.
00:07:12And miss all the epic holiday fun?
00:07:14Not a chance.
00:07:14I've got the ski bindings ready to go.
00:07:16Do you know how many people get injured on the slopes every holiday season?
00:07:21Nope.
00:07:21And don't go into all the gory details like you did when I wanted to buy a trampoline.
00:07:24You've already broken every bone in your body anyway.
00:07:28Not this one.
00:07:30Three more exams.
00:07:31Then I'll be home.
00:07:32Okay, honey.
00:07:33Go crush your goals and then we ski.
00:07:36Bye, Luna.
00:07:37I'm not so sure med school's such a good idea.
00:07:46She was always so up for anything and now she's so cautious.
00:07:50She's sensible and smart and you're gonna need her to have a doctor's salary to look after you in old age.
00:07:55Cause I'm not taking you and your cat menagerie in.
00:07:58Hey, I don't even have one cat now.
00:08:00Oh, they will come.
00:08:02Trust me.
00:08:03Once you move into the trailer park with Uncle Melvin, the cats will find you.
00:08:10That's why you need this.
00:08:12Fine.
00:08:13Let's give this business proposal a look.
00:08:16Doesn't the publishing house normally ship the books to the stores in advance?
00:08:29They would have if you were flying across, but since you're driving, they wanted to save on shipping costs.
00:08:35Great.
00:08:36Look, Addy, we both know this book isn't the company's main focus this holiday season.
00:08:42That's why they signed it to me.
00:08:43The company was excited about it when I pitched the idea.
00:08:46Three years ago, enthusiasm over a project in this industry is fleeting.
00:08:50The book took time.
00:08:52I didn't want to rush it.
00:08:53I know.
00:08:54And I believe in it.
00:08:55I know we can make it a success.
00:08:57Can't stress enough how much my job depends on that.
00:09:00No pressure.
00:09:02Well, guess I'm off.
00:09:06Drive safe.
00:09:08Good luck.
00:09:09Check in.
00:09:16The Christmas Season Handbook by Adeline Wilson.
00:09:39Chapter 1.
00:09:43We kiss you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
00:09:54Bring us something good, eh.
00:09:58Bring us something good, eh.
00:10:01Ah, you know we're going to rush it.
00:10:04Thanks.
00:10:06Happy New Year.
00:10:09The Tidings we pray.
00:10:14To you and your kids.
00:10:17We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
00:10:24We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
00:10:54We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
00:10:58It's all downhill from here.
00:11:02The owner thought it was clever.
00:11:05Miss Wilson.
00:11:07You're Mr. Bowman.
00:11:09Let me guess.
00:11:10I don't look like the scholarly type.
00:11:12Rest assured, I've read all the classics cover to cover.
00:11:15It's a shame.
00:11:16Modern literature has so much more to offer.
00:11:18Such as your work?
00:11:20No, um, my work is a how-to manual written for practical and pragmatic purposes.
00:11:26I leave the fanciful to the fiction writers.
00:11:28Practical.
00:11:29Sounds like a polite way of saying boring.
00:11:31Excuse me?
00:11:32I said, uh, we are so excited to have you here.
00:11:35My sister's inside setting up for your signing.
00:11:37Go on in.
00:11:39Oh, shoot.
00:11:40I am late for Luna.
00:11:41Bring these inside for me.
00:11:42Thanks.
00:11:54Uh, some help here?
00:11:57Thanks.
00:11:58Oh, Adeline Wilson.
00:12:01I'm so sorry.
00:12:02I thought you were Garth.
00:12:03Oh, uh, he went to get Luna?
00:12:06Right.
00:12:08Apologies for that.
00:12:09I'd like to say we're not always this disorganized, but, uh, well, that would be a lie.
00:12:14It's really no problem.
00:12:16I'm early.
00:12:17Wouldn't have mattered.
00:12:19Uh, where should I set these?
00:12:20Uh, just, you know what?
00:12:22Just put them over here on the counter.
00:12:24Oh, I'll take those from you as well.
00:12:27I can only imagine my brother made quite an impression.
00:12:30He didn't strike me as my number one fan.
00:12:33Pay him no mind.
00:12:35Structure and organization make him break out into hives.
00:12:37Oh, I can see that.
00:12:39Oh, just let me get that.
00:12:41Then I'll show you where we've set you up in the back for your event.
00:12:43Just make yourself at home, okay?
00:12:50Oh.
00:12:51Peter, hi.
00:12:54Yeah, yeah.
00:12:55No, uh, everything's on schedule for the Christmas Eve event.
00:12:57Yeah.
00:12:58Mm-hmm.
00:12:59Yeah, all under control.
00:13:02All under control.
00:13:04You're right.
00:13:05That smooth transition from pine to gingerbread to cinnamon will evoke the ultimate scent experience
00:13:15for positive holiday memory retention.
00:13:22Even if you haven't started yet, the Christmas Season Handbook can still help you deliver a
00:13:27very successful holiday season.
00:13:28Would you like a signed copy?
00:13:30Yeah.
00:13:41Hey.
00:13:42Hey, I gotta run.
00:13:43I have a meeting with the local news team covering the Christmas Eve event.
00:13:45You got this from here?
00:13:46Wait, wait.
00:13:47This was your idea.
00:13:48You can just leave me here.
00:13:49Just ask Adi to sign the paperwork.
00:13:51I've already filled out everything important for you, okay?
00:13:53Hold it.
00:13:53You got to sign.
00:13:54Even, even, what the?
00:13:58Hey.
00:14:03Wow.
00:14:12I have to say, I'm surprised by the turnout.
00:14:16Why is that exactly?
00:14:18Oh, just saying that your store is quite popular.
00:14:21Yeah.
00:14:22I mean, why wouldn't it be?
00:14:24No reason.
00:14:29Okay, so, how do we do this?
00:14:32Oh, just, uh, report the sales to the publisher and they'll square up with me.
00:14:35This is your first book signing?
00:14:38It's Melanie's idea.
00:14:40You don't enjoy having a store full of people?
00:14:43I like the place to myself.
00:14:45Don't really like people touching all the books.
00:14:47I should be going.
00:14:55I should be going.
00:14:55Well, Merry Christmas.
00:15:09And you.
00:15:10Safe travels.
00:15:11Do you really think that every detail of the holidays needs to be planned, or is that just to sell books?
00:15:22I absolutely stand by every word.
00:15:27But really, everything?
00:15:30I take it you prefer to wing the holidays?
00:15:33Not wing it, but leave some things to spontaneity.
00:15:37Spontaneity leads to disappointment.
00:15:40Kids love surprises.
00:15:41Mm, kids love planned, organized events that appear to be surprises.
00:15:45There's a big difference.
00:15:46I just think parents, they stress themselves out, and then nobody enjoys the season.
00:15:54Okay.
00:15:56You're not gonna challenge me?
00:15:58You are obviously stuck in your opinion.
00:16:01As am I.
00:16:01We will agree to disagree.
00:16:04You'll be wrong.
00:16:08What was that?
00:16:10Nothing.
00:16:11Just that you are wrong.
00:16:16You care to try to prove that?
00:16:19What do you mean?
00:16:21This is your last stop of the tour.
00:16:23It is.
00:16:24And you're already hyper-organized and ready for the big day.
00:16:28I am.
00:16:29Then stick around town, observe how I do Christmas, and reassess your judgments.
00:16:36That'll never happen.
00:16:38Yeah, okay.
00:16:38Yeah, I mean, if you're afraid of being revealed as a fraud.
00:16:42Well, hold up.
00:16:43I'm not afraid of anything, and my theories are rock solid.
00:16:47Then accept the challenge.
00:16:52Fine.
00:16:52Be prepared to reevaluate your stance.
00:16:58Can I make it more interesting?
00:17:01What do you have in mind?
00:17:02If you can get me to come around to your boring way of doing the holidays,
00:17:09I'll personally ensure you sell enough copies of your book this season to hit a bestsellers list.
00:17:14My publicist hasn't even made that impossible promise.
00:17:17How do you propose to do that?
00:17:21You've never heard of me, huh?
00:17:25No, Mr. Big Shot.
00:17:26I guess I haven't.
00:17:28I won gold in two separate Olympics for skiing.
00:17:36I have a fan or two on social media.
00:17:38Six million followers.
00:17:42Okay.
00:17:43Well, what happens if you win?
00:17:45If I don't convince you that my method's the best?
00:17:50You add a chapter about spontaneity to your book.
00:17:53You have a deal.
00:18:15How was the last stop of tour?
00:18:17There was actually a huge turnout.
00:18:18Sold all but one copy.
00:18:20Well, of the box designated for that store.
00:18:22We won't talk about the rest of the boxes in the truck of my car.
00:18:25That's great.
00:18:26What time are you heading back tomorrow?
00:18:28I've actually decided to stay a few days.
00:18:30Really?
00:18:31Why?
00:18:32The local hero posed a challenge.
00:18:35What sort of challenge?
00:18:36He has a few issues with my book and he'd like the opportunity to disprove my well-researched methods.
00:18:42I don't know about this, Addy.
00:18:44Oh, come on.
00:18:44What could he possibly do to change my mind after years of calculated research and childhood trauma?
00:18:50What's at stake?
00:18:51Just that I add a chapter to the next edition of the book on spontaneity.
00:18:55What?
00:18:56That goes entirely against the rest of the book's message.
00:18:59You can't be serious about putting your brand at risk like this.
00:19:02What could you possibly have to gain?
00:19:04Apparently, he has six million devoted followers on social media.
00:19:09One post and...
00:19:10Poof.
00:19:11Santa brings a bestseller list.
00:19:13Okay.
00:19:14That's...
00:19:15Something.
00:19:15I just hope you know what you're doing.
00:19:18Dark Boland's on the run, eyes focused, and he's lining up for a flip.
00:19:28And...
00:19:29Nailed it!
00:19:30Did you see that?
00:19:32Aunt Mel has some really great ideas, Dad.
00:19:35You really need to take a serious look at this.
00:19:37You should seriously check out this run.
00:19:39That quad flip was off the charts.
00:19:42Completed one and only one in my career.
00:19:44It's the most terrifying.
00:19:45Stunt you've ever pulled off.
00:19:47Yes, you've only told me a hundred times.
00:19:49Let your old man relive his glory days, please.
00:19:52You need to stop living in the past, Dad.
00:19:53You need to start thinking about the store's future.
00:19:56The store's fine.
00:19:57Only it's really not.
00:19:59These sales numbers are atrocious.
00:20:02I should have never taught you such language.
00:20:04We should have kept it to sportscaster speak.
00:20:08Let's paint the picture for those of you just tuning in.
00:20:11The odds are stacked against them, yet here they are, mounting a comeback for the ages.
00:20:15Look at the focus, the fire in their eyes.
00:20:17You can feel the energy surging on the slopes.
00:20:21This store could go all the way!
00:20:27Okay.
00:20:28Let's watch the replay so you can recount how you did it better.
00:20:33That's my moon.
00:20:49Excellent choice.
00:20:51Great love them, too.
00:20:53Look how it is.
00:20:55No order whatsoever.
00:20:57The hunt is part of the fun.
00:20:59If you have six hours.
00:21:02Kids and adults, really.
00:21:05What about genre classification?
00:21:07Fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels.
00:21:10Well, this method's more enlightening.
00:21:13This chaos isn't a method, but do enlighten me.
00:21:16Well, the way I see it, someone might come in looking for a sci-fi novel, insisting that they only read sci-fis, but maybe, while they're searching the shelves looking for one, they find an intriguing mystery, or attempted by a ripping romance novel, a genre they'd never consider otherwise.
00:21:34It's called upselling.
00:21:36It likely just annoys people, and they leave.
00:21:39Annoys people?
00:21:40What is this annoys people that you speak of?
00:21:42People like order.
00:21:43Boring people can shop elsewhere.
00:21:47Heck.
00:21:47So should we get started?
00:21:51On what?
00:21:52You trying to prove to me that spontaneity is the magic of the season?
00:21:56If I had something planned, that would kind of defeat the purpose, don't you think?
00:22:01So what, then?
00:22:02Should I start proving my theories?
00:22:04You really can't just relax and go with the flow, can you?
00:22:09Not since I was three years old.
00:22:16You should come with me.
00:22:17What?
00:22:18Where?
00:22:18Do I need my purse?
00:22:20How long are we going to be gone?
00:22:26Carl, you ready for our rematch?
00:22:31When you least expect it there, Garth.
00:22:35Carl and I had our first snowball fight when we were eight.
00:22:38Every year since, one of us tries to surprise the other with the first throw of the season.
00:22:42You know snowball fights, right?
00:22:44Of course I do.
00:22:45There's a whole chapter of snow fun in my book.
00:22:48Right.
00:22:49The pre-arranged snow battle, complete with team colors and rules.
00:22:54It's a fun day to organize.
00:22:55And that way, you at least know who you're aiming at.
00:22:57Carl and I aim at everyone.
00:22:59You never know who's going to join in.
00:23:01Everyone joins in.
00:23:03Yes.
00:23:04That seems...
00:23:05Spontaneous?
00:23:06Exactly.
00:23:10Like this?
00:23:13You know what?
00:23:17This is fun.
00:23:18You've reached a record number of store sign-ups this year.
00:23:28A credit to your lovely and charming persuasion.
00:23:37Never knew a florist could be so competitive.
00:23:39Miss Lynn, she used to pitch on the Women's Baseball League.
00:23:42That explains a lot.
00:23:45Fun, right?
00:23:47It was about a six.
00:23:49Come on, you were laughing so hard you couldn't breathe.
00:23:52My pre-planned game is fun, too.
00:23:54Time recoveries would not result in side-splitting laughing.
00:23:58Okay, fine.
00:23:58One point for spontaneous.
00:24:00Spontaneous.
00:24:03You made a scoreboard.
00:24:05We needed a visual.
00:24:09So you can see how badly I'm beating you.
00:24:14Okay, fine.
00:24:15My turn.
00:24:16Hey, where are you going?
00:24:18I have some prep to do,
00:24:19but I will meet you at your place at 5 p.m.
00:24:22Don't eat lunch.
00:24:24I ate lunch at 10.30.
00:24:27Of course you did.
00:24:28Normal mealtimes dictated by society would be off-brand.
00:24:35You two seem to be having fun.
00:24:42Sorry.
00:24:43Didn't mean to leave all the actual work to you,
00:24:45but you're just so much better at it.
00:24:47How goes the event prep?
00:24:48Good.
00:24:49Yeah, almost everything's done.
00:24:51Oh, the founder of the event says we've reached
00:24:53a record number of store sign-ups this year.
00:24:55Does someone have a crush?
00:24:57Uh, I don't know.
00:24:59Do you?
00:25:00No, no.
00:25:00I'm talking about you and this Peter guy.
00:25:02You talk like a dozen times a day.
00:25:05He's also about 75 years old,
00:25:08so there's that.
00:25:09But it's too bad,
00:25:11because he's actually very sweet and funny.
00:25:13Okay, so he's got a few decades on you.
00:25:16You've dated worse.
00:25:17Dad!
00:25:19You're not my dad.
00:25:41Hi.
00:25:42You must be Luna.
00:25:44And you are our new cook.
00:25:48Mmm, no.
00:25:49I didn't want to interrupt your setting to tell you.
00:25:51This is Adeline Wilson, author of Christmas by the Book.
00:25:54She's teaching me how to make one of her foolproof holiday recipes.
00:25:57I assume this is part of the bet you two have going?
00:25:58Well, she's attempting to prove
00:26:01that scheduling every aspect of the meal prep
00:26:03results in a hotter, more delicious meal.
00:26:07Makes sense.
00:26:09What, you traitor?
00:26:10Come on.
00:26:11No!
00:26:11Okay, I just need a clear kitchen.
00:26:14Perhaps it's better just to leave you to it.
00:26:16Whatever she's making smells delicious.
00:26:35Oh, come on.
00:26:37She's been there for over two hours.
00:26:38I'm starving.
00:26:39Shouldn't take longer to make the food
00:26:40than it does to eat it.
00:26:42Someone's angry?
00:26:43This is your fault for taking this woman on
00:26:46with this challenge.
00:26:47She's a celebrated best-selling cookbook author.
00:26:50Her book's ridiculous.
00:26:51Have you read it?
00:26:51According to store sales reports,
00:26:53it was a hit at her signing.
00:26:54Well, that's because of this self-help book craze.
00:26:57This new generation thinks that they need solutions
00:26:58to things that don't need to be that complicated.
00:27:01It's all the ins to this and the ins to that.
00:27:03Hey, I have seen what you post to your followers.
00:27:05The cereal eating challenge.
00:27:07Well, now you're just making me more hungry.
00:27:09That's it.
00:27:10I'm ordering pizza.
00:27:11Don't you dare!
00:27:11Dinner's ready.
00:27:15Already?
00:27:28I'm finishing this last bite.
00:27:31I don't care if I explode.
00:27:32I'll get your point to the scoreboard tomorrow.
00:27:36I'll leave the rest of it for you.
00:27:38Are we getting the treat tomorrow?
00:27:40I'm one step ahead of you.
00:27:41Come with me and prepare to be amazed.
00:27:45Um, Dad?
00:27:50Um, Dad?
00:28:05Where did this come from?
00:28:13Side of the house.
00:28:17Head out there to surprise you.
00:28:20Since last Christmas?
00:28:22No, just before Thanksgiving.
00:28:25Of all the premeditated holiday activities,
00:28:28you picked a treat?
00:28:30Oh, no, you don't.
00:28:31You're not getting a point for this one.
00:28:33This is the definition of spontaneity.
00:28:36Hmm, do tell.
00:28:38Gladly.
00:28:39So there I was, driving down State Road 46,
00:28:43behind a truck, transporting Christmas trees.
00:28:46This one fell off, and I just swerved to miss it.
00:28:49Is that how your headlight got cracked?
00:28:51Yeah, I smoked it.
00:28:53Anyway, so I pulled over,
00:28:56and I rescued it!
00:28:59And voila, free Christmas tree.
00:29:03That's a great story, Dad.
00:29:07I'm going to ignore the part about how you nearly died
00:29:10from a tree falling off a truck,
00:29:12then you running out onto a busy freeway to rescue it.
00:29:16But does it look a little dry to you?
00:29:19No, a little hydration can't fix.
00:29:23Dad, you put lights on that thing, that baby's going up.
00:29:26No, it's a great tree, Dad.
00:29:29Or at least it used to be.
00:29:33Do you have any tips in that book of yours on how to save this one?
00:29:36I haven't covered resuscitating evergreens in my courses yet.
00:29:40If you cut a few inches off the bottom of the trunk
00:29:43and put it in distilled water, it could have a shot.
00:29:45Really? That'll work?
00:29:47Worth a shot.
00:29:49Just remember to watch the water level to see if it goes down.
00:29:52Unless, of course, you want your Dad out cruising the freeway
00:29:55for more sacrificial trees.
00:29:57I'll go get the saw.
00:30:20Where's your audiobook section?
00:30:22Or your hunt and find section, most likely to hold one.
00:30:25Audiobooks aren't real books.
00:30:28Say what now?
00:30:30Books are meant to be read.
00:30:33Now listen to.
00:30:35Tell that to every child below the age of five.
00:30:37Adults, I mean.
00:30:38Just like, um, comic books don't belong in a real bookstore either.
00:30:42There's so much wrong with the words coming out of your mouth
00:30:45these last 20 seconds.
00:30:46Oh, I didn't take you for a graphic novel collector.
00:30:50I read all genres.
00:30:51It's called being open-minded.
00:30:53And audiobooks have been proven to target reactions
00:30:56in the same parts the brain is reading.
00:30:58Still think it's cheating.
00:31:02How has this store stayed open so long?
00:31:06I will admit, it has not been the most lucrative venture.
00:31:12It could be, with some adjustments.
00:31:17According to What's Trendy magazine, bookstores are making a comeback.
00:31:22Mel's got some fantastic business plans.
00:31:25I'll give it some thought in the air.
00:31:28Resistance to change seems odd for a man whose life motto is about embracing the impulsive.
00:31:34What's Trendy magazine?
00:31:35My wife and I opened the store 15 years ago when my career ended and Luna was little.
00:31:44Kelly loved to read.
00:31:47The chaotic nature of the design was her idea.
00:31:51Can I ask what happened?
00:31:55She got sick.
00:32:02Luna's studying to become a doctor.
00:32:04That's impressive.
00:32:06Yeah, sports medicine.
00:32:08I'm so proud of her.
00:32:10But, uh, she's working so hard I'm afraid she'll burn out.
00:32:13You'll keep her balanced.
00:32:19Okay.
00:32:20Next act of holiday spontaneity.
00:32:22Let's go.
00:32:24Any point asking where?
00:32:27Nope.
00:32:38Hi.
00:32:39We'd like two tickets to the Christmas concert, please.
00:32:44We're sold out.
00:32:47Well, could we get tickets for tomorrow?
00:32:50This is our last day.
00:32:51Next time, buy tickets in advance.
00:32:59So, maybe buying tickets in advance is the better play here?
00:33:04I practically gave you this one.
00:33:14My redemption.
00:33:19No, no, no, no, no way.
00:33:20I'm not good at skating.
00:33:21Afraid of falling, actually.
00:33:23Come on, Addie.
00:33:24I've got you.
00:33:32Well?
00:33:34It's actually really fun.
00:33:36I'm still terrified.
00:33:38Adrenaline adds to the enjoyment.
00:33:39Is that why you enjoyed your extreme skiing career?
00:33:44Definitely an adrenaline fanatic.
00:33:46It was also the thrill of competition.
00:33:49I'm very competitive, by the way.
00:33:51I hadn't noticed.
00:33:53Tell me you're winning this bet.
00:34:00Scoreboard is tied.
00:34:01Two all.
00:34:02There's a scoreboard?
00:34:03Oh, the whole thing's very official.
00:34:06You're having fun with this, aren't you?
00:34:08I'm out to prove the guy wrong, that's all.
00:34:11You sure?
00:34:12Absolutely.
00:34:14He's not getting to you, is he?
00:34:17I mean, you're still sticking to your convictions, right?
00:34:20Yes.
00:34:21All he's really demonstrated is that some spontaneous fun can happen.
00:34:25But he still needs to prove to me that important details can be left unplanned in order to win.
00:34:30And that's going to be impossible.
00:34:33Don't worry.
00:34:34I got this.
00:35:04Merry Christmas!
00:35:17Um, how are you? Priority, please.
00:35:19It always looks worse than it is.
00:35:21Um, how are you? Priority, please.
00:35:28It always looks worse than it is.
00:35:32You know, if you mail your holiday packages in September, there's no lineups.
00:35:37How do you buy gifts that early?
00:35:39Newsflash. Stores are open for business year-round, and Christmas comes every year.
00:35:44It's not a surprise.
00:35:45I don't mind waiting in line. It's kind of fun.
00:35:46It adds to the feel of the hustle and bustle of the season, everyone sending gifts to their loved ones, encourages a sense of in it together.
00:35:55A sense of community, huh?
00:36:01Thank you. Merry Christmas.
00:36:04Hello.
00:36:07With regular shipping?
00:36:09Yes, please.
00:36:11Estimated deliveries between January 10th and February 4th.
00:36:14That's after Christmas.
00:36:15But it's well before next Christmas.
00:36:18What other shipping options do you have to get it there before this Christmas?
00:36:22There's priority ground shipping.
00:36:24Sounds good.
00:36:25Oh, wait, no. That'll have your packages arrive January 5th at the earliest.
00:36:29Let me check priority here.
00:36:30Thanks.
00:36:31I'm seeing December 27th to 30th.
00:36:34You're getting warmer.
00:36:37Express priority is the only way this late in the season.
00:36:40Okay. Express priority it is.
00:36:42How much?
00:36:50This can't be right.
00:36:52Oh, that price is correct.
00:36:53Your package will arrive December 24th.
00:36:55Guaranteed.
00:36:56Merry Christmas.
00:36:56Are you Adeline Wilson, the author?
00:37:04Yes.
00:37:04I guess that's me.
00:37:06I love your book.
00:37:08It's so smart.
00:37:09I'm following your advice, and I've never had a better Christmas season.
00:37:11Wow.
00:37:12I'm happy to hear it.
00:37:14You should read it sometime.
00:37:17Thanks.
00:37:17Mm-hmm.
00:37:33Perfect.
00:37:34That's great.
00:37:35Thank you so much.
00:37:37Hi.
00:37:38I can see you right over here.
00:37:38What is going on?
00:37:40Uh, apparently your little bet went viral.
00:37:43What?
00:37:43It's, uh, 20.
00:37:46Thank you so much.
00:37:49Hi.
00:37:50My publicist, I guess she saw an angle to capitalize on this challenge we have going.
00:37:56Well, it's certainly been good for business.
00:37:58Oh, I hope you don't mind.
00:37:59I took those extra boxes of books out of your car when we ran out.
00:38:02I hope you didn't need them for anything.
00:38:04No, no, that's great.
00:38:05Um, and, uh, change?
00:38:09And now that you're back, uh, maybe you can sign some?
00:38:12Um, yeah, absolutely.
00:38:14I'm just going to check in with my publicist.
00:38:15I'll perfect.
00:38:16I'll just be a sec.
00:38:17Nice.
00:38:19Ooh.
00:38:21Perfect.
00:38:23That's great.
00:38:26You're going viral?
00:38:27Yeah, about that.
00:38:29Don't you think posting about someone trying to disprove my claims is a little counterintuitive?
00:38:33I thought you were worried about this.
00:38:35I was, but then I thought, why not use it to our advantage?
00:38:39You're banking your job and the success of the book off of controversy-based sales?
00:38:44It's not that controversial.
00:38:46It's just fun.
00:38:47People will buy the book to see whose side they're on.
00:38:49And your social media followers have risen significantly.
00:38:54I hope you know what you're doing.
00:38:57Me too.
00:38:58So far, business around here has definitely picked up.
00:39:01They're selling all the copies I didn't sell everywhere else.
00:39:04See?
00:39:04It's working.
00:39:06You still ultimately need to win so he delivers on his promise.
00:39:09I'll try.
00:39:10Oh, and get a photo of you two in front of the scoreboard to post to your page.
00:39:14Will do.
00:39:14Adi?
00:39:15Need your signature over here.
00:39:17I gotta go.
00:39:18Bye.
00:39:18That woman is a Christmas savant.
00:39:37Why are all the Christmas presents for our family and friends still on the kitchen table?
00:39:42Because the shipping was gonna cost more than the items inside.
00:39:45So everyone's getting e-gift cards this year.
00:39:48Those presents will be used for next year's gifts.
00:39:50See?
00:39:51Now who's the pre-planner?
00:39:52How's the patient?
00:39:55On the mend.
00:39:56The water's down an inch.
00:39:57Another inch or two and I think we'll be out of the woods.
00:40:00Out of the woods.
00:40:01It's a tree.
00:40:02Oh, come on.
00:40:03It's a tree pun.
00:40:04That was funny.
00:40:05I'll add that to the list of dad jokes I never want to hear again.
00:40:08Up late again?
00:40:12I haven't actually gone to bed yet.
00:40:18This is a vacation.
00:40:20You remember the definition of that, right?
00:40:21Thank you for doing this.
00:40:41Thank you for selling them.
00:40:43Wasn't sure what I was gonna do with all these extra copies.
00:40:45Give them as Christmas gifts to friends and family?
00:40:49I don't really have much of either.
00:40:51I traveled a lot as a military kid, so...
00:40:55Lasting friendships were tough to make?
00:40:58Yeah.
00:41:00Yeah, I used to worry about that a lot with Luna, you know, when the family was traveling around a lot for Garth's skiing career.
00:41:07I was really happy when they finally settled down here.
00:41:11I sensed it wasn't something Garth wanted to talk about.
00:41:16But his wife must have been really young when she passed.
00:41:20She was.
00:41:21Yeah.
00:41:24She was a track and field sprinter.
00:41:27And she was going back to competing.
00:41:30You know.
00:41:32Garth had retired and...
00:41:34Kelly wanted to give her athletic career one last go.
00:41:38And Garth supported her.
00:41:39I mean, we all did.
00:41:40But, uh, a few weeks in, she got sick.
00:41:49And then, uh...
00:41:51Well, and then she was gone.
00:41:58That's so sad.
00:41:59That must be a factor in Luna's decision to practice sports medicine.
00:42:06Yeah.
00:42:08Yeah.
00:42:09Life changed for Garth and Luna in that split second.
00:42:12I mean, that's why my brother is the way he is.
00:42:16That's why he lives in the moment for the moment.
00:42:20You know?
00:42:21It's because he knows how precious every second is and how fast it can all just be gone.
00:42:29But, uh...
00:42:33You know, he needs to start thinking more about the future as well.
00:42:40Wiltie survived the night.
00:42:42Who's Wiltie?
00:42:43That name Luna gave the treat.
00:42:44She said if it had a name, you'd know when we were talking about it and...
00:42:47Man, she's good.
00:42:50I wonder where she gets her sarcasm from.
00:42:52Hmm.
00:42:53Yeah.
00:42:53I wonder.
00:42:54Where does she get that?
00:42:59Since it was your idea that saved it, would you like to help us decorate it later?
00:43:03No point distribution, no challenge pressure, just plain old holiday tradition.
00:43:09A temporary truce?
00:43:14Sure.
00:43:16I'm in.
00:43:17Don't judge the decorations.
00:43:32They all have special meaning.
00:43:35This has special meaning?
00:43:37Yes.
00:43:38I can't believe you don't remember that one.
00:43:40Spring break, road trip to Oregon.
00:43:42We stopped at that famous ice cream shop in that tiny town.
00:43:44And they were selling these in the clearance bin claiming that they were supposed to be the chocolate ice cream emoji.
00:43:50It is supposed to be the chocolate ice cream emoji.
00:43:52This is the same conversation we had that day.
00:43:54You said it was ice cream.
00:43:55I said it was the result of a lactose intolerant condition.
00:43:58It's not exactly great marketing.
00:44:00We argued the entire way to the coast.
00:44:02I remember now.
00:44:03We finally let the old man with the metal detector on the beach weigh in to solve the debate.
00:44:07And he said?
00:44:10Poop emoji.
00:44:17These definitely have meaning.
00:44:19Oh, we don't have to hang those this year.
00:44:22What are you talking about?
00:44:23You always say they deserve a place of honor in front of the tree.
00:44:26You want all those?
00:44:27This is from his first competition in Breckenridge.
00:44:32You know, I'm sure Addy doesn't want to hear about my career.
00:44:35Actually, I do.
00:44:39This is from his first Olympics.
00:44:42And this is from his second Olympics.
00:44:44Wow.
00:44:44And the rest here are all from the regional and national events.
00:44:49Very impressive.
00:44:51Do you ski?
00:44:53If by ski you mean drink hot cocoa by a fire in a lodge, then yes.
00:44:59You should take her while she's still here.
00:45:02Yeah.
00:45:03Maybe.
00:45:10What's this?
00:45:14New addition to the tree.
00:45:17Dad.
00:45:18I haven't even graduated yet.
00:45:21Oh, that's just a matter of timing.
00:45:23You might have just jinxed it.
00:45:25Or maybe it's a manifestation.
00:45:29Worst tree ever.
00:45:31I don't know.
00:45:32I kind of like it.
00:45:44This is an awful lot of presents for just your family.
00:45:53Ah, Christmas morning.
00:45:55We all revert to our four-year-old selves.
00:45:57It doesn't matter how old you are.
00:45:59The excitement of seeing a giant pile of presents under the tree never fades.
00:46:06What are you doing?
00:46:09Wrapping.
00:46:11That is not wrapping.
00:46:12That looks like the gift wrap after the present's been opened.
00:46:16Okay.
00:46:18Show me how it's done.
00:46:19Watch and learn.
00:46:20You think that looks more fun than mine?
00:46:49Definitely prettier.
00:46:51Okay.
00:46:52Let's let Luna decide.
00:46:53I thought you said today was no points, no pressure.
00:46:56No.
00:46:56I'm too competitive to commit to that.
00:46:59Besides, I think I've got this one.
00:47:01Luna!
00:47:03Thought I wasn't allowed to come in yet.
00:47:06We need you to solve something for us.
00:47:08Which present would you be most excited to open?
00:47:11Can I pick the messy one?
00:47:17Uh-huh!
00:47:17Sorry, Addy.
00:47:18I just wouldn't want to open yours.
00:47:20It looks too pretty.
00:47:21Uh-huh!
00:47:22So my wrapping is technically better.
00:47:25It doesn't matter.
00:47:26The deciding factor is which one she'd rather open.
00:47:28Another point for spontaneous.
00:47:31Can I go back to learning how to set a broken femur now?
00:47:34Yes.
00:47:35Gross.
00:47:35So your bio says you didn't have the perfect holidays growing up.
00:47:45My editor said that people needed to feel as though the advice in the book was coming from someone who knew what they were talking about.
00:47:53Why I was the one to write the story.
00:47:54The dreaded question posed by all non-fic writers.
00:47:57So you came up with a false backstory to sell books?
00:48:00I doubt that.
00:48:01No.
00:48:02It's true.
00:48:03Growing up, I didn't experience joyful, magical Christmases.
00:48:09My mom died when I was a baby, so it was just my dad and I.
00:48:13He didn't care much for the holidays.
00:48:16Did you celebrate at all?
00:48:18Yes, but he'd fail to plan or put any effort in and then feel guilty at the last minute and run out to buy some random gifts or whatever turkey the grocery store still had.
00:48:30It was obvious he wasn't into it.
00:48:32So, when I became a teenager, I put him out of his misery and told him I wasn't into Christmas either.
00:48:39Well, you have to know the truth now.
00:48:42He passed away three years ago.
00:48:45I'm sorry.
00:48:50I do feel that he did inspire me to become the Christmas expert that I am today.
00:48:55So, have you always known you wanted to be a writer?
00:48:57I wouldn't really call myself a full-time writer.
00:49:00I, uh, was too scared to give up my day job.
00:49:03I'm actually an ESL instructor.
00:49:04I teach English online.
00:49:06That's cool.
00:49:07I like that.
00:49:08A backup plan.
00:49:09Having moved around the world so much, I picked up a few languages along the way.
00:49:13And I like the independence of working from home and on my own schedule.
00:49:17Well, plus it gives you more time to research the best way to burn scented candles for the ultimate holiday memory retention.
00:49:25Full disclosure, if I never smell another scented candle again, it'll be too soon.
00:49:43Online book sales are through the roof.
00:49:46Even right before Christmas, for a non-fiction title, this is unheard of.
00:49:50That's great news.
00:49:51Of course, we still need that big push from Garth's post to solidify this as a best-selling book.
00:49:57By the way, have you two discussed a way to wrap this up?
00:50:01Wrap this up?
00:50:02Yeah.
00:50:03The challenge.
00:50:04It's coming to an end, right?
00:50:06By Christmas Eve?
00:50:08Um, of course.
00:50:10We're running out of challenges anyway.
00:50:12Here are some ideas.
00:50:14So, you can have a gingerbread house making competition.
00:50:17Doors all stand out.
00:50:18Wearing fancy dress clothes to sit around the house and eat all day.
00:50:37You've got to be kidding me.
00:50:39It's a celebration.
00:50:41You have to dress the part.
00:50:42Give the day the respect it deserves.
00:50:44I'll give my full stomach the respect it deserves by wearing stretchy pants.
00:50:48Oh, please don't tell me you're ugly Christmas sweater, people.
00:50:52Much worse.
00:50:54Pajamas all day, people.
00:50:56Like you don't shower all day?
00:50:58No.
00:50:58We change out of our bedtime Christmas pajamas, shower, and then put on our daytime Christmas pajamas.
00:51:04We're not uncivilized.
00:51:05You've obviously never spent the entire day in pajamas, have you?
00:51:08Sure, I have.
00:51:09Other than when you're sick.
00:51:11Then no.
00:51:11You don't know what you're missing.
00:51:16I'll take your word for it.
00:51:22We're doing this.
00:51:24Stores close tomorrow.
00:51:25My place, 9 a.m.
00:51:27In your pajamas.
00:51:28No way.
00:51:31Are you forfeiting the challenge?
00:51:36Fine.
00:51:36How does it feel?
00:51:59To be standing in front of practical strangers in my pajamas?
00:52:05Weird.
00:52:07You get used to it.
00:52:09DVDs?
00:52:10You actually still have a DVD player?
00:52:12Dad refuses to stream.
00:52:14Says movies look better on DVD.
00:52:16Lower as nostalgic.
00:52:17My vote is for the bells of Bedford.
00:52:19Actually, I think it's only fair, since I'm being a good sport about the pajama day.
00:52:25The least we can do is experience my movie watching plan.
00:52:29Your what?
00:52:32I agree.
00:52:33That's fair.
00:52:34Oh.
00:52:35I see.
00:52:37The ladies are sticking together.
00:52:39How nice.
00:52:41Fine.
00:52:42Fine.
00:52:43Fine.
00:52:44What's first?
00:52:45Joy to the world, the Lord it is called.
00:52:59Let earth receive her King.
00:53:05Let every heart be pain room.
00:53:11And heaven and nature sing.
00:53:15And heaven and nature sing.
00:53:18And heaven and nature sing.
00:53:21So, do I get this point?
00:53:25Undeniably.
00:53:26And I don't think I could watch these movies in any other order now.
00:53:30And I'll admit, the pajamas aren't horrible.
00:53:36Okay, fine.
00:53:36They're fantastic.
00:53:37But does this really qualify as spontaneous?
00:53:39Or just lazy?
00:53:41Mmm, fine.
00:53:43I'll sacrifice the point.
00:53:45It was worth it to get you to experience it for yourself.
00:53:48Well, I have to get back to studying.
00:53:51Great hanging out with you, Annie.
00:53:58So, how many times in different orders did you have to watch these movies to figure that out?
00:54:06Let's just say I could act out each one off script.
00:54:09You must have done a lot of research for your book.
00:54:12How long did it take you to write?
00:54:13Three years.
00:54:15Three years?
00:54:16That's a whole other level of commitment.
00:54:18I didn't want it to be just a simple holiday suggestion book.
00:54:22There was enough of those on the market already.
00:54:23I wanted my theories to be tested and true, based on psychological and scientific evidence.
00:54:30Wow.
00:54:31So, Christmas has basically been your life for three years.
00:54:35Yep.
00:54:35And yet, you don't actually have any real Christmas plans yourself, do you?
00:54:43What makes you think that?
00:54:45Because you agreed to stay in a strange small town leading up to what you've affectionately deemed the most significant month of the year to hang with me.
00:54:53A dude you don't know and barely like.
00:54:59Okay, fine.
00:55:01You got me.
00:55:02As I told Melanie, I don't really have any family.
00:55:07And my circle of friends is more acquaintance level.
00:55:10So, uh, no boyfriend or fiancé?
00:55:19I, um, I was engaged once, a few years ago.
00:55:25What happened?
00:55:28The book.
00:55:29The Christmas Everywhere, all the time.
00:55:31It got to him.
00:55:33He said, direct quote, you have ruined Christmas for me.
00:55:37Not exactly a book endorsement quote.
00:55:39What a jerk.
00:55:41No, believe me, I understood.
00:55:44Christmas was my only focus.
00:55:47Music, movies, festive food meals.
00:55:51Oh, I could have suffered through that dinner you made more often.
00:55:58Anyways, that was a few years ago.
00:56:01And it didn't make much sense to drag someone else through the holiday madness.
00:56:06Relationships were put on hold until I finished the book.
00:56:09Well, I hope you've enjoyed your time here this season.
00:56:16I have.
00:56:17A lot.
00:56:23We should really talk about how we're going to wrap this whole thing up.
00:56:26I'm leaning on the scoreboard by one.
00:56:29Right.
00:56:30Yeah, yeah.
00:56:30I guess it's coming to an end soon.
00:56:34Hey, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve, though.
00:56:36I may have a few counter moves myself.
00:56:38Can't sleep?
00:56:53Hmm.
00:56:54Too much sugar.
00:56:55He says as he consumes even more.
00:56:58How goes the studying?
00:56:59The book's stuff I'm confident about.
00:57:01The exams aren't that hard.
00:57:02No, with the amount of studying you put in, anything would feel easy.
00:57:06It's the practicum next semester at the sports therapy clinic I'm most worried about.
00:57:11Applying what I'm learning in a real-life scenario is freaky.
00:57:14Practice on me.
00:57:15Really?
00:57:16Yeah.
00:57:16Just don't be surprised if my stats are all off from the sugar high in the emotional movie-watching journey today.
00:57:24Mm-hmm.
00:57:25And, of course, your pulse might be racing as well.
00:57:28Where are you getting on at?
00:57:31I saw the way you looked at Addie.
00:57:34No, you didn't, because there was nothing to see.
00:57:36I take my blood pressure.
00:57:37Before you annoy me, that gets worse.
00:57:40You know it's okay to like her.
00:57:43She's the competitor.
00:57:44There's no room for weakness.
00:57:46Your blood pressure's fine.
00:57:55Still in top athlete shape.
00:57:58I wouldn't go that far.
00:58:05Just saying, it's been a long time since you dated someone.
00:58:08I'm not interested in dating.
00:58:10Mom's been gone a long time.
00:58:11Time doesn't decide when the heart's ready to move on.
00:58:33Go to bed.
00:58:34Snowflakes fall and everyone around us is singing.
00:58:52It's Christmas magic.
00:58:54With you under the mistletoe.
00:58:58Thanks.
00:58:59Here you go.
00:59:00Thanks.
00:59:05Hey, Peter.
00:59:06Hey.
00:59:07Wait, what?
00:59:10No, the store should already have those books.
00:59:14Okay, let me look into it, Peter, and I'll call you back, okay?
00:59:17Okay, bye.
00:59:17Put the pops behind us.
00:59:20There you go.
00:59:20Thanks.
00:59:20Thanks.
00:59:23Let's drink to better times ahead.
00:59:27Oh, a holiday flash mop in the middle of the mall.
00:59:46Epic.
00:59:47And I think that's another point for spontaneous.
00:59:49You better pick up the pace, Wilson.
00:59:51We're running out of time.
00:59:52That's not a good look.
00:59:58I got that.
01:00:00These were supposed to go to bookstores weeks ago.
01:00:04The others went out?
01:00:05Because I did it.
01:00:06I left this last batch to you, remember?
01:00:09My bad.
01:00:11Your bad?
01:00:12Like, that's all you got?
01:00:14I'm sorry.
01:00:15It's not good enough, okay?
01:00:16The event is tomorrow night.
01:00:17I mean, we're never going to get these to all the participating stores in time now.
01:00:20Look, that book's a classic.
01:00:22I'm sure each of the other bookstores have a cup.
01:00:23That wasn't the point.
01:00:25The point of the event is that every store has the same version, same words, same photos,
01:00:30same sticker on the front as a commemorative souvenir.
01:00:33Okay, I messed up.
01:00:34How do we fix it?
01:00:35Well, I don't know if we can.
01:00:37I mean, half these stores are miles away.
01:00:39Even Express Post likely won't make it in time.
01:00:42Courier?
01:00:43That would cost a small fortune.
01:00:45We can deliver these.
01:00:48Really?
01:00:49You want to drive around for hours delivering books?
01:00:51It may be the only way to save the day.
01:00:54Ah, so you're admitting.
01:00:55Sometimes an act of spontaneity is...
01:00:57Is a necessary evil when someone fails to plan.
01:01:03That's fair.
01:01:05No point.
01:01:06This Christmas, I believe, there's more to this world than I can see.
01:01:22Tents of sparkles and trees light up.
01:01:27I hear my heart say, this world is love.
01:01:31And if you don't mind, I don't want to wish this.
01:01:36I know I'm too old, but I've missed this.
01:01:41Oh.
01:01:41Here's my number.
01:01:42This is it.
01:01:43Two and three.
01:01:45The number one feels close to me.
01:01:50Snow is falling and you are calling my name.
01:01:56And that's the last of them.
01:02:00We did it.
01:02:01In my dreams, in this Christmas, I'll be happy.
01:02:13Luna says, snow's coming, drive safe.
01:02:18Sometimes I forget who the parent is.
01:02:20She's very protective, huh?
01:02:22Always has been.
01:02:23She's going to make a fantastic doctor.
01:02:26Was that always her dream?
01:02:28No.
01:02:29No.
01:02:29She was going to follow in my footsteps and competitive skiing.
01:02:35Since her mom died, medicine became her new passion.
01:02:41Melanie told me what happened.
01:02:43I'm really sorry.
01:02:45Yeah.
01:02:45It just happened so fast.
01:02:47It took weeks to even believe that she was gone and months to figure out how to move forward
01:02:54without her.
01:02:55Couldn't have been easy.
01:02:57I was learning to become a dad.
01:03:00Kelly there is my guide.
01:03:02She's an actual at parenting.
01:03:04It just took me longer to get it.
01:03:06All of a sudden, it was all up to me.
01:03:10You did an amazing job.
01:03:13Luna is incredible.
01:03:18Feel free to tell me it's none of my business, but you must have been a really young dad.
01:03:24Yeah.
01:03:25I mean, Kelly and I were young everything.
01:03:28We were young athletes, young parents.
01:03:31She retired from competing.
01:03:33She found out she was pregnant with Luna, and then they continued to tour with me until
01:03:37I retired.
01:03:39An injury?
01:03:40No.
01:03:41It was just time to walk away.
01:03:43And then you two opened the bookstore?
01:03:45Yeah.
01:03:45We were driving into town with everything we own in this U-Haul.
01:03:49And as we were passing by this space release, Kelly pointed to it.
01:03:53She goes, that building holds our next chapter.
01:03:57I didn't realize she meant quite literally.
01:04:01And now you run the store with Mel.
01:04:04Mel's actually on loan for the holidays.
01:04:07She has a job in financial management about an hour away, but she gives all her vacation
01:04:15time to help me during the holidays.
01:04:18You two seem very close.
01:04:20We have our moments.
01:04:21Like today when I messed up and she wanted to strangle me.
01:04:24I don't know how Luna and I would have gotten through those first few years on our own without
01:04:30her.
01:04:32Family support can make all the difference.
01:04:37I'm sorry you haven't had that.
01:04:41I know I've only known you for a week, but if you need anything,
01:04:48Luna, Mel, and I are always here for you.
01:04:50Her daddy really helped save the day yesterday.
01:05:05Yeah.
01:05:06Quite possibly my life.
01:05:08Aunt Mel looked ready to murder me.
01:05:09Dad.
01:05:11You know I love you, but you have to start taking things a bit more seriously.
01:05:14I know.
01:05:15The store's capable of being something truly great, but you have to try harder.
01:05:19I will.
01:05:20Aunt Mel can't keep spending her yearly holidays to come help you out, so you should really
01:05:24try looking into some part-time help.
01:05:26I'm definitely an accountant.
01:05:27Thank you, but I'm the parent here.
01:05:32Sorry.
01:05:33I worry about you.
01:05:35It's okay.
01:05:37You shouldn't have to.
01:05:37I promise.
01:05:40Next year, I'll get everything sorted out.
01:05:43What about Addy?
01:05:46What about Addy?
01:05:48What are you going to do about the connection between you two?
01:05:51We're friends.
01:05:52I'm sure we'll keep in touch.
01:05:55And the challenge?
01:05:56Last time I checked the scoreboard, even after today's fiasco, you're still in the lead.
01:06:01Yeah, well, after today, I can't argue that some planning is definitely the way to go.
01:06:06So you'll tell Addy she won and endorse her book to all your followers?
01:06:10I'll tell Addy she won and endorse her book to my followers.
01:06:14Good.
01:06:14Good.
01:06:36I decided to move forward with Melanie's store proposal in the new year.
01:06:51That's great.
01:06:52Yeah, so the next time you host a book signing here, there might actually be a better setup.
01:06:57I think this one worked out well.
01:07:08Your book's really great, Addy.
01:07:11I'm sorry if I ever made you think otherwise.
01:07:15And your spontaneous spirit is something more people could learn to embrace.
01:07:21I'm...
01:07:31Oh, there was no mistletoe.
01:07:32I had to improvise.
01:07:33I'm sorry.
01:07:34I just, uh...
01:07:35Since...
01:07:35Got you!
01:07:38I'm sorry, what?
01:07:39Proof that a spontaneous mistletoe kiss is a bad idea.
01:07:43My point.
01:07:44The score is tied.
01:07:44So that was just part of the challenge.
01:07:49Of course!
01:07:50You just wanted to even the scoreboard.
01:07:54Yep.
01:07:55Okay, well, I guess we're tied.
01:08:00That was awfully risky.
01:08:02What if I hadn't completely frozen and...
01:08:06kissed you back?
01:08:08Then I guess you would have won.
01:08:10But you didn't, so I guess we're out of steel, mate.
01:08:14She went in for a kiss, and you rejected her.
01:08:29I didn't reject her.
01:08:30She caught me off guard.
01:08:31I panicked.
01:08:32So you wanted to kiss her?
01:08:34I don't know.
01:08:35Maybe, yeah.
01:08:36But then she claimed this was all just part of the challenge?
01:08:39Yes, but I'm not so sure.
01:08:41But if you were starting to have feelings for her, why didn't you just tell her?
01:08:45I don't know if I'm feeling feelings.
01:08:47I mean, ever since the kiss, I've just felt nauseous and clammy.
01:08:50Yep.
01:08:51That's love.
01:08:52Love?
01:08:53Let's not get carried away.
01:08:54I've only known the woman less than ten days.
01:08:56You said it was love at first sight with Mom.
01:08:58That only ever happens once.
01:09:00But Dad, this woman has you feeling feelings, and that hasn't happened in a very long time.
01:09:05You have to explore this.
01:09:07Does he?
01:09:09I mean, Addy's leaving soon.
01:09:13Exactly.
01:09:13That's a cop-out.
01:09:14People make long-distance work all the time, and she's a writer and online ASL teacher.
01:09:19She could move here.
01:09:20Oh, let's not get ahead of things.
01:09:23I agree.
01:09:23But I think you should at least explore this connection.
01:09:27I mean, what do I even say?
01:09:28After the way that I panicked and acted, it was...
01:09:30Apologize for acting weird and tell her you like her.
01:09:34Okay, it's weird that I like her.
01:09:36Right.
01:09:36No, Dad, come on.
01:09:39Deep breath.
01:09:42You're weird.
01:09:43She's great.
01:09:44You want her to stay and spend Christmas Day with us tomorrow.
01:09:48What if she says no?
01:09:49She won't say no.
01:09:51How do you know?
01:09:52Because I've seen the way she looks at you.
01:09:54And that kiss wasn't part of the challenge.
01:09:58Okay.
01:09:59Okay.
01:10:06Hey.
01:10:28Can I come in?
01:10:29Of course.
01:10:37You're leaving?
01:10:40Thought it was a good time to hit the road.
01:10:42Less traffic on Christmas Eve.
01:10:44You're not coming to the event tonight?
01:10:45I don't think it's a good idea.
01:10:47Don't want the whole challenge thing to steal the focus of the event.
01:10:52My dad panicked.
01:10:55He told you about the kiss?
01:10:57Luna?
01:10:57I'm so sorry.
01:10:59It was nothing.
01:11:00Just a bad way not to lose the challenge.
01:11:02That's all.
01:11:03That's too bad because my dad likes you too.
01:11:08Really?
01:11:09My ego is fine.
01:11:10You don't have to say that.
01:11:11He does.
01:11:12I know him.
01:11:13He just freaked out.
01:11:13He's never dated anyone since my mom, so he's nervous and afraid to open himself up.
01:11:18Then I really think I should go.
01:11:22This week's been fun.
01:11:25And I've enjoyed getting to know you, but I think it's best for everyone if I leave now.
01:11:33Before anyone gets hurt.
01:11:35Okay.
01:11:37I get it.
01:11:38Good luck with school.
01:11:45You're going to make a fantastic doctor.
01:11:49If I ever decide to try skiing, you'll be the first person I call to reset my femur.
01:11:55Thanks, Annie.
01:12:02Merry Christmas.
01:12:08Merry Christmas.
01:12:24Okay.
01:12:28Sorry, the event's not starting yet.
01:12:31Melanie?
01:12:33I'm Peter Franklin.
01:12:34Uh, no, you're not.
01:12:37Peter Franklin has about 30 years on you.
01:12:40That, that, that would be my father.
01:12:42Um, excuse me, I'm Peter Franklin Jr.
01:12:45Oh, oh, hi.
01:12:47Hi.
01:12:48Well, welcome.
01:12:49I...
01:12:50The place looks great.
01:12:56Um, so, it's been you that I've been chatting with this whole time?
01:13:01Um, my father handed the reins to me this year, uh, which is why it was so important for me to pull this off.
01:13:07Wow, well, um, you really took a chance leaving something so important in the hands of the store.
01:13:12I, I don't think so.
01:13:13You, you've been incredible this whole time.
01:13:15I mean, especially when you handled those last-minute deliveries.
01:13:18Well, I mean, that was my brother, but sure, I'll take the credit.
01:13:22Happy Christmas Eve.
01:13:40Sounds like you're on the road.
01:13:42Decided I should start the journey back.
01:13:45On Christmas Eve?
01:13:46I thought you'd be staying to celebrate the holidays.
01:13:49Don't be silly.
01:13:49It was a fun vacation. Now it's over.
01:13:54Well, congrats on winning the challenge.
01:13:56What? No, I didn't. The score was tied.
01:14:01You didn't see the post?
01:14:02A post.
01:14:03Garth Bowman's social media post?
01:14:05Recommending your book with a very heartfelt message.
01:14:15He posted something, but neither of us won the challenge.
01:14:19I'd say you did.
01:14:20Digital book sales have been through the roof since the post went live two hours ago.
01:14:25Seriously?
01:14:26I guess people are wanting to get a jump on next year.
01:14:28As you always say, Christmas comes every year. It shouldn't come as a surprise.
01:14:33And the best part? I overheard the execs talking about a next potential book.
01:14:38The perfect Valentine's Day.
01:14:41Wow. I mean, I'm never going to write that, but wow.
01:14:44He did this because of the kiss.
01:14:50Uh, you did what now?
01:14:51It was nothing.
01:14:55Why are you really leaving on Christmas Eve, Addy?
01:14:58This wasn't about book sales, was it?
01:15:01Do you like him?
01:15:01Yes, but he's not ready for a new relationship.
01:15:07And if I stayed for the holidays, it would make it harder to leave.
01:15:11Did you tell him how you feel?
01:15:12I went with actions that backfired, and then I backtracked and, well, ran away.
01:15:21How can you expect him to open up and trust in your relationship if you're too scared to be vulnerable and honest?
01:15:28I guess you're right.
01:15:29But I'm already hours away.
01:15:33It's never too late to turn around.
01:15:35Go ahead and officially lose that bet, Addy.
01:15:38It's time you had a Merry Christmas.
01:15:40Hey, Snow Angels, G. Bowman here with a special Christmas Eve post.
01:15:54By now, a lot of you have heard about the Team Spontaneous vs. Team Structure Challenge I have going on with Adeline Wilson, author of The Christmas Season Handbook.
01:16:04And, well, I'm humble enough to admit when I'm wrong.
01:16:06And while I still believe that life happens in the unexpected moments, I've come to learn that being prepared for those moments makes them even better.
01:16:15Adeline Wilson is the Christmas expert we can all learn something from, as she not only outlines how to make Christmas special in her book, but she's injected heart into those words of wisdom.
01:16:25So, officially, congrats, Addy, for winning the challenge.
01:16:29But I consider myself the luckiest for having met you and spent this time with you.
01:16:37Go buy the book.
01:16:39Merry Christmas.
01:16:40This event means so much to me, and I'm so thankful that I could be here tonight to share this experience with all of you.
01:17:01My father started this event 30 years ago, and this year's sign-up was a record-breaker.
01:17:07So, thank you to the event's sponsors, but a special thank you to the woman who made it all possible.
01:17:14Melanie Bowman.
01:17:16Oh.
01:17:24Just one sec.
01:17:25Hey.
01:17:32She's not coming.
01:17:33She left town already.
01:17:35It's fine.
01:17:37It was always gonna end.
01:17:38Well, it didn't have to.
01:17:41After my reaction to the way she tried to kiss me, I don't blame her for leaving.
01:17:45Well, maybe you should call her.
01:17:49If the kiss had really meant something, and it wasn't just about the challenge, she would have stayed when she saw my post.
01:17:54Maybe she didn't see it.
01:17:56I did.
01:18:02She came back.
01:18:04I can see that.
01:18:05What do I do?
01:18:06Don't mess this up again.
01:18:08Thanks for the helpful advice, sis.
01:18:13I thought you left town already.
01:18:16I did.
01:18:19And you came back.
01:18:21I did.
01:18:22I did.
01:18:24I forgot to tell you that this Christmas has been the only one that has truly felt special.
01:18:41And it's because of you.
01:18:42I meant, like, did you leave a phone charging cable at the hotel or something, but I'll take that.
01:18:55I'm glad you came back.
01:18:57You are?
01:18:57Because I also forgot to tell you that this Christmas has been the best one I've had in a long time.
01:19:08Because of you.
01:19:10Sorry I didn't say it before you drove hours away.
01:19:13Maybe it was something that needed to happen this way, without overthinking, overthinking, overplanning, just me following my heart.
01:19:29So maybe some spontaneity is okay.
01:19:34Maybe a little.
01:19:35Maybe a little more.
01:19:51We are live!
01:19:52It was the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
01:20:10But I was able to get, like, all the best kids together.
01:20:24And while planning and preparing can relieve some of the stress of the season.
01:20:30Being open to the unexpected magic all around can elevate the season from a successful one to one your family will never forget.
01:20:38There you go. Merry Christmas.
01:21:01Another best-selling season in the books.
01:21:04I think the new chapter is my favorite.
01:21:06Definitely the one that required the best research.
01:21:10Thinking of dividing the store into genres.
01:21:14No way.
01:21:15Let the folks be inspired.
01:21:17Yeah?
01:21:18Yeah.
01:21:21What do you say?
01:21:23You ready for a meticulously planned spontaneous holiday?
01:21:27Absolutely.
01:21:28Absolutely.
01:21:36Don't think I forgot about the snow you put down, my coat.
01:21:41What do you do?
01:21:42What do you do?
01:21:43What do you do?
01:21:44What do you do?
01:21:45What do you do?
01:21:47What do you do?
01:21:48What do you do?
01:21:49What do you do?
01:21:49We're living out of favorite traditions.
01:21:53With gingerbread treats too sweet.
01:21:55Not to mention it's a wonderland.
01:21:57World wind everywhere you look.
01:22:00Tinsel bling around the evergreen.
01:22:05It's a non-stop jingle bell jubilee.
01:22:09So much fun doing Christmas by the book.
01:22:13Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:22:15We're singing every carol at the top of our lungs.
01:22:19Hanging all the wreaths and the mistletoe up.
01:22:22Making darn sure every silver bell's done this show.
01:22:28We're flying high, you'll tie a kringle time grooving.
01:22:32Everybody who knows us knows we're doing Christmas.
01:22:37The fire's crackling and the popcorn's strong.
01:22:41Bulbs are twinkling and the stockings are hung.
01:22:44So much fun doing Christmas by the book.
01:22:48Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
01:22:49Doing Christmas by the book.
01:22:58Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
01:23:03Oh, oh, oh, oh.
