The Nutcracker At Wethersfield Movie Trailer HD - Plot synopsis: Back in the long, dark Covid winter of 2020, there was no way the New York City Ballet could mount their traditional Christmas production of Tchaikovsky's fairytale. But choreographer Troy Schumacher had a dream to save the show. Relocating two hours' north, Troy set about staging The Nutcracker in and around the Hudson Valley's magnificent Wethersfield estate. With only a couple of weeks to rehearse, 50 dancers and production crew come together to re-imagine a classic without a stage. Award-winning filmmaker Annie Sundberg was on hand to celebrate their trials and triumphs.

00:00I had always done The Nutcracker ever since I was 12.
00:06It's in my bones. It's in my blood.
00:09The Nutcracker is actually the catalyst that brought me into the art form.
00:18The idea of no live performance for the foreseeable future is really daunting,
00:24especially when you've worked your whole life on this craft.
00:30Ashley and I were like, we have to do something.
00:33I asked them to come and see Wethersfield.
00:36Troy said, oh my god, are we in the set of The Nutcracker?
00:39That was really when the spark started to fly.
00:44Troy has this vision of bringing people inside the dance,
00:48and I really don't think that's ever been done before.
00:51What if we can create something new that gives people this really special moment
00:55in a year that we've had so few?
00:57I just had to be upfront with everybody about the risk involved.
01:01We can't promise you that we're going to make it through to the end.
01:04One, two, three, four.
01:07The idea of being with my colleagues again and dancing, I was like, yes, I'm there.
01:13Oh my god.
01:16Putting a group of dancers together for weeks and creating this, no one else is doing that.
01:23This felt radically different and almost like a little crazy.
01:26There's a lot you can't control.
01:28Oh, okay.
01:30Kind of the poetic beauty of this is that if we pull this off,
01:34but it'll actually be the Nutcracker that comes to life to save all of us.
01:39It's showtime, people.
01:43I just did this all to try to give everybody work and to give them purpose,
01:48but there's no substitute for being in front of an audience and dancing.
01:52My mom actually danced with New York City Ballet.
01:57She always said it wasn't about being on stage alone.
02:00There is some, like, really huge sense of community.
02:05There's always a bit of Nutcracker magic giving us some hope.
