Hello and welcome to the Dark Mystery Lounge.
00:03
It's that lovely time of year.
00:05
Time to decorate the yard with colorful lights,
00:08
shopping for gifts for your family and friends,
00:11
decorating the tree, and planning to spend time with your loved ones.
00:15
And people are a little nicer around this time of year too.
00:18
But for one family, the unthinkable happened while preparing for a Christmas family gathering.
00:24
Let's find out what happened.
00:25
A call came in to 911 dispatchers around 5 p.m. on December 24, 2007.
00:37
The sound of screaming can be heard, but only for a few seconds before the phone goes dead.
00:42
Police go out to the 10-acre property, but the gates were locked.
00:46
Police figured it was people arguing at a Christmas party,
00:50
so they decided not to investigate further.
00:52
Two days later, Linda Teeley, who worked at the post office,
00:57
noticed that her best friend and co-worker Judy did not show up for work.
01:03
It's unlike Judy to miss work, and Linda had a gut feeling that something was wrong.
01:08
So she decided to go to Judy's house to see why she was absent.
01:12
What she found was a nightmare.
01:15
The house was unlocked, which was odd because Judy always kept her doors locked.
01:19
Linda opened the door and called out for Judy, but no response.
01:25
She came in a little further into the house and noticed a man laying on the floor dead.
01:30
From her view, she could only see a few people dead in the house.
01:34
A man, a woman, and a baby.
01:37
But if none of them were Judy, she called 911.
01:41
Around 9 a.m., police officers arrived.
01:43
Inside the house, they found 32-year-old Scott Anderson and his wife, Erica,
01:50
and their 3-year-old son, Nathan.
01:52
Huddled underneath Erica was a fourth victim, their 5-year-old daughter, Olivia.
01:58
Upon further investigation, hidden in a shed just outside of the house were the homeowners,
02:03
Wayne and Judy Anderson.
02:05
There were no signs of forced entry, and all of the victims were shot to death.
02:10
But who could have done this to them?
02:13
In the small rural community of Carnation, Washington, everyone knew everyone.
02:19
Wayne and Judy Anderson had no enemies.
02:22
They were both good, hard-working people.
02:25
60-year-old Wayne was an engineer for Boeing,
02:28
and 61-year-old Judy worked at the United States Postal Service,
02:33
and they were married for 31 years.
02:34
They had three children, Mary, Scott, age 32, and Michelle, age 29.
02:42
Their son, Scott, was a hard-working family man who was married to Erica,
02:47
and they had two children, Olivia and Nathan.
02:50
So who would want them dead?
02:52
Three generations of the Anderson family were killed on Christmas Eve,
02:56
and no one knows why.
02:57
It didn't take long to find out who did this to this family.
03:07
Michelle Anderson, daughter of Wayne and Judy,
03:11
and her boyfriend, Joe McEnroe, drove to the property.
03:14
They lived on the property in a trailer.
03:17
The police took both of them in for questioning.
03:19
They both confessed to the murders and were arrested.
03:23
They were both charged with six counts of first-degree murder.
03:26
Joseph and Michelle were tried separately.
03:30
Joseph's trial was in December of 2014,
03:34
and Michelle's trial was in March 2015.
03:37
Due to the confessions, we get a clearer picture
03:40
as to what happened on Christmas Eve 2007.
03:44
The Andersons were having a family gathering at their home.
03:47
Judy was busy in the kitchen, cooking dinner and wrapping presents,
03:51
and Wayne was relaxing on the couch watching TV,
03:54
waiting for their son Scott and his wife Erica and their children to arrive.
04:01
When Michelle and Joseph entered the house,
04:03
armed with a .357 Magnum revolver and a 9mm automatic pistol,
04:09
Joseph distracted Judy while Michelle attempted to shoot her father,
04:13
but the gun jammed.
04:15
So Joseph shot Judy and Wayne.
04:17
They dragged the bodies out to the shed and cleaned up the mess.
04:21
Not knowing what had happened, Scott and his family walked in.
04:25
Michelle shot him several times, then shot Erica.
04:29
Erica was only wounded and managed to get to the cordless phone, dialing 911.
04:35
Joseph grabbed the phone and ripped out the batteries and smashed the phone,
04:39
then shot Erica again, killing her.
04:42
Joseph then shot both children.
04:44
According to Joseph, Michelle did not want to leave any witnesses.
04:48
Michelle, realizing that Erica dialed 911,
04:52
so she went out and locked the gate, knowing that the police would arrive soon.
04:57
When Joseph took the stand, he blamed the murders on Michelle,
05:00
saying that he did not want to do it, but Michelle forced him to participate.
05:04
He also said that he suffered from mental illness.
05:08
So what was Michelle's motive for killing her family?
05:11
Simply put, money.
05:12
Michelle said that Scott owed her money and she believed that she was being slighted and mistreated
05:18
by her parents and brother, even though she was living on their property rent-free.
05:23
In her taped confession, she called herself a monster and a bad person.
05:28
She planned on killing her family for two weeks and talked her boyfriend into helping her.
05:33
She hated Erica, Scott's wife, the most,
05:36
because she felt like Erica pushed her out of her brother's life.
05:40
Of course, the jury in both trials found them guilty and sentenced them to her life in prison.
05:46
Both of them avoided the death penalty due to the statewide moratorium on the death penalty
05:51
by then-Governor Jay Inslee.
06:00
I swear, something as simple as money can make some people do the worst things imaginable.
06:05
I mean, killing three generations of that family for something so stupid.
06:10
Money can be replaced.
06:12
People cannot.
06:13
Family cannot.
06:15
Michelle and Joseph are gonna have to live with what they did for the rest of their lives.
06:19
To be honest, I don't feel sorry for them in the least.
06:22
They knew what they did was wrong, and now they're gonna have to pay the price.
