01:20I'm going back to see how country life

01:40Dreaming of moving to the countryside
01:42is the easy bit
01:43Actually doing it

01:46and for Charlie and Sammy Kalil
01:48it took a life-changing
01:50no, life-threatening event
01:53for them to make the move
01:55Charlie and Sammy have long been fed up
01:59living in the busy town of Bracknell
02:01where they have not one
02:03but two busy motorways as neighbours
02:06But what's really inspired them
02:09to escape the concrete jungle?
02:12Sammy's recent open heart surgery
02:14You have a wake-up call in life
02:16and you think to yourself that
02:17you know, you've got this one life
02:19how do you want to live it?
02:20Do you want to live it doing the typical things?
02:22Or do you want to live it in adventure?
02:25Born with a heart murmur
02:26this was the second time
02:27he's been under the knife
02:29his first operation
02:30was when he was just 25
02:32When I had my valve replacement
02:35they actually resuscitated me 14 times
02:37So last year
02:39I had to have it done again
02:40and now I've got a mechanical valve
02:42A lot of people would listen to that
02:45and think
02:45oh man, I'm sorry
02:46you know
02:46this has happened to you
02:48but it was actually the best thing
02:49that ever happened to me
02:50having open heart surgery
02:51the first time
02:52It brought us closer
02:53Yeah
02:54And it made me realise
02:55the important things in life
02:57But that wasn't Sammy's only epiphany

03:17When did this kind of yearning

03:26Because you both seem
03:27quite kind of sociable

03:31and live all by yourselves?

05:52other things around bushcraft
05:54like foraging and canoeing
05:55I felt real
05:56sense of freedom
05:57being outdoors

06:05are just 34 miles
06:07from central London
06:08facing endless traffic
06:10and problems
06:11with air pollution
06:12Everyone's on top

06:17and you just want
06:18that sort of
06:19peace and quiet

31:33in rural Aberdeenshire
31:35where they've been
31:36hard at work
31:37ever since
31:38huge aren't they
31:39it's the goats
31:41can't reach these ones
31:42inside they've painted
31:46and decorated
31:46throughout
31:47transforming the
31:48once tired
31:49three bed bungalow
31:51into a cosy
31:52country pad
31:52and even more
31:55impressive
31:55is the grafting
31:56they've done outside
31:57building a sprawling
31:59animal sanctuary
32:00in their one acre
32:01garden
32:01including a brand
32:04new 24 foot shed
32:05for some very special
32:07new residents
32:08since I've last
32:09seen them
32:09there's been
32:10a very important
32:12development
32:12so it's a very
32:13exciting day today
32:15we are off to pick up
32:16our little baby goats
32:18piggy goats
32:20Yogi and Alfie
32:22have been settling
32:22in very well
32:24to their new life
32:25not surprising
32:26when they have
32:27their own obstacle course
32:28they're yet to use
32:30the swing
32:30and trampoline
32:32of course
32:33it's 19 months
32:34since I last
32:35saw them
32:35so I want to find out
32:37how the humans
32:38are getting on
32:38hello

32:40is that goats
32:42I see
32:42of course I'm excited
32:43about seeing you
32:44but I'm more excited
32:46I want to see them more
32:47look at this
32:49oh my goodness
32:50Charlie
32:51it's grown a bit
32:51hasn't it
32:52you've done so much
32:54so when I was last here
32:55you'd just done
32:56the bunny shed
32:57haven't you I think
32:58the bunny shed

32:58and then since
32:59we've built the aviary
33:00they've got an underground tunnel
33:01which goes to their garden
33:02and then all of this
33:05yes all of this as well
33:06so Sammy helped me
33:07put the posts in
33:08for the goat barn
33:09just so we could get them
33:09all level
33:10and then yeah
33:11I built the rest
33:11all on my own
33:12you are amazing
33:13you are amazing
33:16and armed with her new
33:19DIY skills
33:20Charlie's been able
33:21to create an incredible
33:22space for her beloved animals
33:24including a 16 foot
33:26chicken run
33:27for hens
33:28chilli
33:28tuppence
33:29eb and morag
33:30and while the animals
33:33are clearly thriving
33:34sadly Charlie's missing
33:35a few of the original gang
33:38we lost both of our bunnies
33:39since we've moved up
33:40right
33:41so we lost one
33:42we got another friend
33:43to bond with the one
33:43we had left
33:44and then tragically
33:45she passed away
33:46so then we had to get
33:48another one to bond
33:49with the new one
33:49of course she did
33:50so two new bunnies
33:52two new bunnies
33:52and no surprise
33:54Buddy and Beanie
33:55have the run of the place
33:57oh they are lovely
33:59I mean
33:59if this isn't bunny heaven
34:01yes
34:01I don't know what is
34:03meanwhile Pygmy Goats
34:06Yogi and Alfie
34:07are proving themselves
34:09to be the perfect pets
34:10good boys
34:11and just like the ones
34:13we met on Hillbury Farm
34:15all those months ago
34:16these little guys
34:17just love a play
34:19and a cuddle
34:19obviously
34:20I can't resist
34:22look at these two
34:25this is Yogi
34:26he's tiny
34:28he's absolutely adorable
34:29and who's this
34:30this is Alfie
34:31I mean you've waited
34:32a long time
34:34to get these goats
34:35have they lived up
34:37to expectations
34:38they have
34:39they're very noisy
34:40they're more noisy
34:41than I thought they would be
34:42sort of if we're in the house
34:43and they see we're in the house
34:44they'll come and scream
34:45at the window
34:45but yeah
34:46they do like a lot of attention
34:48yeah
34:48though since these little guys
34:51were born in spring
34:52they're still to experience
34:53their first Aberdeenshire winter
34:55unlike Charlie and Sammy
34:58who've now seen two
34:59and survived
35:01to tell the tale
35:02did you have any idea
35:11how brutal the winters
35:12were going to be
35:12no
35:12and especially last winter
35:14we had
35:14it was minus 21
35:15at one point
35:16and we had snow drifts
35:18and the farmers
35:18were trying to clear the roads
35:19and they just couldn't
35:20because the wind was so strong
35:21it was just
35:22so they literally
35:23I think just had to give up
35:24and we were snowed in
35:25so you weren't sort of
35:26hankering after the nice
35:27benign weather of the southeast
35:29no
35:30it was lovely
35:31though it's not been
35:36all beer and skittles
35:37so the goat barn's
35:39not even been up a year
35:39and this is the second roof
35:41which did nearly reduce me to tears
35:43after building it
35:44and I hadn't even lived in it
35:45third chicken roof
35:47well they did move
35:50to the windiest country in Europe
35:52it's all reinforced now
35:53we are sort of putting
35:54some windbreak netting
35:55around as well
35:56so hopefully
35:57as the winters go on
35:58get a bit more prepared
35:59undeterred by the harsher climate
36:02they've also achieved
36:03another one of their
36:04long-term goals
36:05greater self-sufficiency
36:07this polytunnel
36:08constructed over 18 months
36:10after moving in
36:11now houses part
36:12of a thriving
36:13fruit and veg garden
36:14so what crops
36:16have you been growing
36:16in there
36:17so we've had
36:17some broccoli
36:18some carrots
36:19strawberries
36:19cucumbers
36:20tomatoes
36:21you've done quite well
36:23tropical veg
36:24in Aberdeenshire
36:26creating a more
36:29sustainable life
36:30was always part
36:31of their plan
36:31so while it's still
36:33early days
36:33for the allotment
36:34the long-term goal
36:35is for 50%
36:36of the fruit and veg
36:38they eat
36:38to come from the garden
36:40but it doesn't end there
36:43thanks to their four hens
36:45who are laying up
36:45to four eggs a day
36:46they now have the luxury
36:48of fresh eggs
36:49and so do their neighbours
36:52as thanks to the egg
36:53honesty box
36:54outside their house
36:55they're selling up
36:56to four boxes a week
36:58nice
36:58a few pennies in there
37:01pay for their food
37:03pay for a holiday
37:06honestly you can't have
37:11stopped
37:12building and painting
37:14I feel that's all
37:14I've done
37:15lately
37:16Charlie has also
37:19completed her veterinary
37:20nursing assistant
37:21training
37:21which for her
37:23was a lifelong dream
37:25and knowing Charlie
37:26it will be put
37:27to very good use
37:28and while buying
37:29the house
37:30and reducing
37:30their mortgage
37:31by over a hundred
37:32grand
37:33allowed Charlie
37:34to give up full-time work
37:35she's recently started
37:37a part-time admin job
37:38to bring in
37:39some extra income
37:40meanwhile
37:41Sammy is still working
37:42remotely as an online tutor
37:44but even with a full-time job
37:46the slower pace of life
37:48in the country
37:49means he has more time
37:50to dedicate to Charlie
37:52and his other love
37:53the great outdoors
37:55is that a spider

38:01what was it
38:02nothing
38:03two years on
38:06there's one activity
38:08that he's still
38:09completely swept away with
38:11quite literally
38:12and when he's not
38:17riding the rapids
38:18of the river spay
38:19which by the way
38:20he's managing to do
38:21twice a month

38:25in this sprawling
38:27outbuilding
38:27that's been converted
38:28into his very own
38:30workshop
38:31and let's just say
38:33he's been a very
38:34busy man

38:59on the water
39:00and for a man
39:01who was until
39:02two years ago
39:03using an inflatable
39:04canoe on a canal
39:05in Basingstoke
39:06country life
39:08has certainly honed
39:09his practical skills
39:10and his adventurous
39:11spirit
39:12so you have actually
39:13had some time
39:14to go paddling
39:15as well
39:15have you
39:16camping out
39:16as I go along
39:17been adventurous
39:18since we've been here
39:19oh well that was
39:20the whole point
39:21though wasn't it
39:22I mean that's what
39:23you were so missing
39:24when you were in
39:25Bracknell
39:25was that opportunity
39:26to just go
39:27from your doorstep
39:29out into the wild
39:30that's right
39:31yeah
39:31while I've no doubt
39:34that Aberdeenshire
39:35offers the dream
39:36country location
39:37Sammy and Charlie
39:39also saw huge potential
39:40in the property
39:41from the get-go
39:42and having spent
39:44just 400 pounds
39:45to convert both
39:46outbuildings
39:47into practical spaces
39:48they've also been
39:49super savvy too
39:51this is my workshop
39:52and this is a bench
39:53that I built
39:54to store my tools
39:56and I can do all my projects
39:57I do level work
39:58knife making
39:59for the bushcrafts
40:00and stuff
40:00just a bit of a hobby
40:01you know
40:01there's even more
40:03next door
40:03what was once
40:04an old pigsty
40:05has been transformed
40:06into a home gym
40:08for ex-pro wrestler
40:09Sammy
40:10do you look back
40:12on the house
40:13in Bracknell
40:13and now think
40:15how on earth
40:16did we live
40:17in that place
40:18yeah
40:19absolutely
40:19we've got so much
40:20space now
40:21you know
40:21and so much freedom
40:22to do what we want
40:23and no one's going to bother us
40:24you know
40:24just get on with it
40:25yeah
40:26oh it's brilliant
40:27yeah
40:27this is probably
40:28one of the first things
40:29we built
40:29because you know
40:30it's obviously part
40:31of my health
40:31so I'm just
40:32trying to find my
40:33passion for fitness
40:34again you know
40:35yeah
40:35which reminds me
40:38of the huge life event
40:39that kickstarted
40:40this process
40:41back in 2018
40:43lots of people
40:45dream of doing
40:46what you've done
40:47I mean it was
40:48your health really
40:49Sammy
40:49that was the big
40:50impetus for you
40:51to make this move
40:52wasn't it
40:53that's right
40:53yeah you've got
40:54to do things now
40:55rather than just
40:56dreaming about
40:57you've got to
40:57take the action
40:58and it's always
40:59going to be scary
40:59but now we've done it
41:01you know
41:02not only have they
41:03done what they
41:04set out to do
41:05but having moved
41:06in August 2019
41:07they also faced
41:09a challenge
41:09that no one
41:10saw coming
41:11and obviously
41:12you've gone through
41:13a lockdown
41:14several lockdowns
41:16since you've moved here
41:17have you felt
41:18sort of more
41:19isolated
41:20I think Covid
41:21has probably been
41:22the only impact
41:22that makes you
41:23wish you were
41:23down south sometimes
41:24my uncle
41:25he passed away as well
41:26so I couldn't be there
41:27for my uncle's funeral
41:28and that was really hard
41:29because I had to
41:30watch that remotely
41:31but that's because of Covid
41:33that's nothing to do
41:34with being in the country
41:35yeah we were kind of
41:35in our own little bubble here
41:37when the pandemic hit
41:38weren't we
41:39yeah
41:39we just didn't really
41:41go out anyway
41:41because we were
41:42getting stuff done
41:43and it was winter
41:43so
41:44and in the 19 months
41:47since I last saw them
41:48I can't believe
41:49how much they've achieved
41:50as for the future
41:52well they already
41:53have plans
41:54to add decking
41:55and a hot tub
41:56to the garden
41:57next summer
41:57an outdoor space
41:59that's just
42:00for the humans
42:01and you
42:02I know Sammy
42:03were frustrated
42:04when you were living
42:05in Bracknell
42:06that you didn't have
42:07enough kind of
42:08wild space
42:09around you
42:10and you didn't have
42:12the time
42:13work-wise
42:13to enjoy it
42:14have you found
42:16a better work-life
42:17balance
42:17since you've been here
42:19yeah I mean
42:19if I get stressed
42:20at work or anything
42:21I literally can walk
42:22five minutes down the road
42:23or drive five minutes
42:24down the road
42:24and just get amazing views
42:25yeah
42:26and that'll diffuse me
42:27yeah
42:27was it the first
42:28sort of I think
42:29few months we were here
42:30I came in I said
42:30I feel really content
42:32you could see things
42:32coming together
42:33and all my animals
42:35starting to move in
42:36they're not dreams anymore
42:37yeah
42:37a lot of people
42:38they always say
42:39you know
42:39I'd love to do that
42:40and that was us
42:41we were like
42:42I'd love to do that
42:42I'd love to do this
42:43you know
42:43now just doing it
42:45it's like yeah
42:45it is absolutely amazing
42:47it's hard work though

42:49but the blood sweat
42:51and tears
42:52to get to this point
42:53have paid off
42:54while they may have
42:56lost their heart
42:56to Scotland
42:57in doing so
42:58they've found
42:59the adventure

43:27escaping anymore
43:27it's just being
43:28a being
43:28it's being part of it

43:31real wisdom

43:32and self-awareness
43:34to know exactly
43:35what you want
43:36yeah

43:37the courage
43:38to go out and find it
43:39yeah

43:54to a part of the country
