00:00my boss walked in and he thought it was a mannequin I've moved the sheet a little bit
00:13and I noticed that there was a there was a body I came out and I responded to the primrose motel
00:20I was told to go to room number one the room was a mess it was dirty the beds were unmade there was
00:27a trash bag on the floor there was other empty alcohol bottles I noticed that she had shrink
00:34wrap wrapped around her legs and it was going up her torso we had to actually dismantle the couch
00:41to get her out without causing any damage to any of the evidence or anything it was awful I've never
00:48seen any human being treated like that he started smashing her against the dashboard I thought he
00:54was gonna kill his boat I said I have a bad feeling and I just want you to be safe
01:01and she got in the car and that was the last time I saw her
01:03the morning of June 1st 2015 Adams County Sheriff's Department respond to a body found in the
01:33Primrose Motel in Denver Colorado being a patrol deputy it's a blank slate you imagine you're gonna
01:42deal with some craziness throughout your shift but it's hard to imagine worst case scenario sometimes
01:47preparing yourself and then actually seeing are two completely different things walking in and seeing
01:55that type of scene and knowing that that that is a human you know that that is that is somebody that
02:03you'll be we take a vow to protect and seeing somebody in that state it was very very tragic
02:10I came out and I responded to the Primrose Motel we got on scene got briefed by the deputies that were
02:18there on scene at that point I went into room number one and I remember the horror of the scene and
02:28the gruesome nature of how the body was found
02:35the room was a mess it was dirty the beds were unmade there was a trash bag on the floor there was other
02:46empty alcohol bottles cushions from inside the couch had been removed and one was on the floor and one was
02:55on one of the two beds that were in the room at first I was like where's the body at because it was so well
03:02concealed investigators finally uncover the young woman's body hidden inside the couch
03:11the foam part of the cushion had been removed and that was on the bed but the covers to those cushions
03:26had been laid on the couch to make it look as if someone were just looking in the window or looking
03:32through the door on first glance that there was nothing amiss that the couch was as it should have
03:40been you really had to look because they really had concealed her I think the best way to describe
03:48would be inhumane she was just stuffed in there it was awful I've never seen any human being treated like
03:54that she had a pillowcase over her head that was tied at her neck and then her hands were bound and
04:03her ankles were bound by a sheet she had some underwear that were down below her knees and that
04:11was the only thing she was wearing it wasn't a full-size couch only a love seat so it only sat two
04:19people you can see that her legs were curled up most of the way her head was kind of bent down a little
04:25bit and down inside the couch we had to actually dismantle the couch to get her out without causing
04:31any damage to any of the evidence or anything it's an absolutely gruesome despicable act
04:44investigators speak to the motel manager who had discovered the body manager was doing his usual
04:52morning rounds he came to the room to check and see if they were going to pay for another night
04:57he said there was a little handwritten notes on the piece of paper and said do not disturb on the
05:03door but he knocked anyway to see if they're going to stay because check out time was 10 30.
05:10they didn't hear anything so he then came back again later
05:15knocked found the door was unlocked then he entered inside the owner came in and was starting to assist him
05:25with cleaning the room they didn't see the vehicle that they came in any longer they didn't see anybody
05:30in the room and assumed they just left without checking out my boss walked in and he and he thought
05:38it was a mannequin i moved the sheet a little bit and i noticed that there was a it was a body i said
05:44it's a female and i told him i was going to call 9-1-1
05:48investigators begin to process the scene and collect evidence there was a little bit of blood in the
05:59bathroom there was the do not disturb note that was on the door was taken there was another one in the
06:04room as a matter of fact that said do not disturb that one was taken as well detectives do not yet
06:11know the victim's identity but they catch a break when they locate her car in the parking lot
06:19it was her vehicle that was there the registration was provided to the office and they made a copy of
06:25it that was one piece of the puzzle one of our detectives actually took her fingerprints and was
06:32able to get a positive hit when he compared the index finger from her driver's license was able to
06:39make a positive match for abigail cosad we were later notified that her father was at his local
06:47pd trying to report her as a missing person we brought him to the interview room and unfortunately
06:53was the one who had to tell him what had happened that you know we definitely found abby and we
06:57positively identified her at that point he was able to provide us with some information
07:03this is claudia i'm sorry sarah this is sarah um they're both victim at the county too at the
07:10sheriff's office um and uh they're here for you okay um whatever you need um we we'd like to ask you
07:21some things sure um and um when you're ready to do you know where abigail was living with me she's
07:29leaving at home when was the last time that you saw her saturday afternoon saturday afternoon
07:37about what time between 6 and 6 30. actually sat saturday evening i don't think about it
07:44because i went to uh sam's club i got home right right at six and she left just really after that
07:51okay did you see where she was going or anything or since she was coming down to denver was she planning
07:56not meeting anybody here yeah these guys right here
08:05she called him emilio but he also gave her the name daniel memorial weekend she disappeared also
08:12for several days she disappeared i was watching her bank accounts and these people had her
08:21her they had her debit card they were withdrawing money they withdrew over a thousand dollars cash
08:29out of her debit out of her bank account you know i started asking more questions when i start seeing
08:34all the money and tried to advise her that these people probably aren't good she told me they were
08:38gangbangers um told her she probably shouldn't be hanging out with them this danny's girlfriend or
08:45emilio she called him emilio apparently grabbed her by the throat and tried to beat her up she had
08:53bruises on her shoulder she had bruises and scrapes all over her knees after she told me that i started
08:59i went through her cell phone that's when i wrote these notes this saturday morning i wrote all the phone
09:05numbers down and the names the screenshots taken by abigail's father reveal that she had been seeing
09:17this man called emilio for about a month what was really important was the identification of this man
09:27that she had met a mere 30 days before and in the span of that time had started a relationship with abby
09:39he was one of the last people that she was with to her dad's knowledge as the last person seen with
09:48abigail when she was alive emilio becomes a prime suspect in her murder police need to bring him in for
09:56questioning as soon as possible on june 1st 2015 the body of 31 year old abigail kozad was found at the
10:12primrose motel in denver colorado police officers take the statement of the primrose motel's maintenance
10:21staff he claims he saw abigail arrive at the motel the day before with teresa dean and two other people
10:31i did see teresa come out of the room and go to the i call it the trunk but it's more like a hatchback
10:38of the honda open it up and i looked and i seen a female inside inside getting getting out of the trunk
10:46okay and what was up with this female was anything strange or unusual yeah it was kind of strange first
10:55thing i noticed well why was she in the trunk coming out of the trunk you know and then as she got out of
11:01the trunk i noticed that she had some uh i call it saran wrap but it's more like shrink wrap on her and it was
11:08like wrapped around her legs and each leg individually and uh and it was going up her torso it was like
11:16mid-range of her stomach but it wasn't wrapped real tight okay so it was just wrapped around her each
11:23leg individually where her legs weren't bound together okay and uh um and then up and you said
11:29probably up her stomach yeah like mid middle of her torso yeah did she have clothing on her knee yeah she
11:34had a pair of jeans on and that the uh shrink wrap was really it wasn't tight it was kind of loose
11:40and her pants were unzipped and unbuttoned and you know i upon her getting out of the truck she stood
11:47up and you know and i asked she looked like she was either intoxicated or or high and i asked her if
11:54she was okay and she did speak to me and she said she was fine okay did she look like she was scared
12:02looked like yeah she looked like she was scared and but it was like she was scared but it looked
12:08like she was also under the influence so you know that's why i asked her if she was okay
12:14because i noticed the shrink wrap was on her and i didn't want you know i didn't know what was going
12:19on you know but she did walk inside the room
12:23did she seem like she was being pushed in the room or no she walked under her own power right
12:33beside teresa they walked together in the room so seeing someone like that really didn't really
12:38didn't surprise you it didn't surprise me because i've known teresa to do weird stuff with people
12:44you know what do you mean by weird stuff like either you know come dressed up in a costume or
12:49something or or have you know guys over and do uh role playing and stuff with them and stuff like
12:57that you know i i just know that she does weird stuff you know he just kind of wrote it off as another
13:06day at the primrose it's very typical of that area so is this just not something else you thought
13:11was just one of the weird things yeah that she was just doing you know because i didn't know that
13:16she would go that far with somebody you know detectives now have the difficult task of notifying
13:24the rest of abigail's family i had a knock on my door and i was met by a tualatin police officer
13:35and a minister letting me know that my daughter had been murdered
13:41they couldn't share much all they told me was that they had found her body in a motel and it was
13:51most definitely a homicide they actually stayed with me at that house for a couple hours
13:59which i really appreciated at that time that was a lot of information to take in
14:04abby was a bright intelligent fun loving young lady beautiful young lady with a great future ahead of her
14:23it's hard to imagine that somebody would want to take her life
14:27and you're trying to process that
14:45abby was my older sister she was four years older than i am abby was very protective of me being my
14:52older sister she liked to pick on me but nobody else could pick on me she was just a very loving caring
14:58older sister abigail's life changed dramatically at 16 years old she was a junior in high school and
15:09this was the christmas break she had gone out with some friends and they were hanging out and
15:15when they were on their way back home there was a car accident they hit a drunk driver we got that
15:24call in the middle of the night that every parent doesn't want to get and that is that we have
15:30a young female in our hospital we have reason to believe it's your daughter and you need to come quick
15:37they told us that she had had a brain injury she was in a coma for about four weeks
15:46abby defied expectations daily i remember visiting her in the rehabilitation hospital
15:53and seeing her sit up on her own for the first time i remember hearing her speak my name for the
16:01first time she learned to walk again she had a long journey but she never gave up
16:08she fought hard she was part of that vulnerable population because no matter how much progress she
16:16made you could tell she still had a brain injury but she was determined to become as normal as possible
16:24after a breakup with her boyfriend abigail was brought to counseling where she meets the man
16:29who goes by emilio we had gotten abby into counseling to her primary care provider that agency also
16:41specializes in individuals who are court ordered for treatment and so now you have a vulnerable person
16:48who is obviously vulnerable just by looking at her talking to her is now put in with individuals that
16:55capitalize on others that are vulnerable she became a prime target for them a month after they meet
17:04emilio invites abigail on a double date her father is concerned for her well-being there just was things
17:12that she was talking about where they were living and what they were doing and why they were you know
17:17kind of just hearing their stories it was about six o'clock that evening that saturday evening
17:23and i walked with her out to her car and i gave her a big hug in the driveway and i told her i said abby
17:28i said i really wish you weren't going on this but i'm not going to stop you but i said i have a bad
17:35feeling and i just want you to be safe and if anything feels wrong about this at all please just leave
17:42and come home and she said don't worry dad i will i promise you i will
17:47and she got in the car and that was the last time i saw her
18:01detectives continue their investigation by retrieving the details of the motel booking
18:07the one who rented the room was teresa dean she actually rented the room in her name
18:13had her home address on it the owner of the motel knew her there the male that was with them
18:20they did not know him they didn't recognize him at all there's another woman that was there with them
18:26they identified her as at first lori or star we later found out what her real name was
18:33the staff at the primrose motel identified the other woman as laura ortega
18:41police need to figure out a way to compel ortega to talk about what happened inside motel room one
18:51well you were in the car when they pulled into the primrose correct
18:55okay so she gets out of the back trunk you had no you did not see her get out of that trunk area no okay
19:01you guys are drinking doing your thing and at one point things obviously went bad so how did things
19:12how did it escalate into the attack onto this the love part and the talking and i want you to go into
19:22detail on that please okay um don't you love me babe um who said that the girls on the couch
19:30and uh you dumb bitch came out of his mouth and then trisa looked behind and she found the thing on the
19:40table
19:43and the girl had got up and that trisa pushed her into the bathroom and then he came behind
19:50and i heard boom boom boom boom well first he socked her yeah once there once there
19:55there in the eyes yeah like right into this area and then i seen the hair get pulled i go oh no i
20:04am watching nobody get beat up this is not for me i go i'm leaving guys i don't know if they're both
20:09beating her up or what i'm pretty sure because trisa she's she's a little tired and that's why i told
20:15you exactly what i remember okay she pushed her first and then he took it over but they stayed in
20:22there together they didn't come out okay and once they went in the bathroom what what assaults did
20:29you see take place in the bathroom they shut the door i just heard the screaming and don't hurt me
20:34don't hit me i used to go through that i go i can't watch this though i'm going trisa they didn't come
20:41out they didn't say goodbye nothing they kept in there doing beating her up so what would you say
20:46your main reason for not calling the police for none of my business you don't think a woman being
20:53beaten and assaulted in a bathroom is any of your business no it's not it wasn't me thank god i used
20:59to get beat up in a bathroom nor called help for me i said i know better now anytime i hear something
21:06like that i'll just call the cops according to the police laura ortega was initially charged with
21:14first degree murder however since she was not present during abigail's murder the charges against
21:20her have been dropped and she is free to leave now investigators must track down teresa dean we tried
21:29whatever phone number we had for her we went we had detectives go to her to her house that she had
21:34on the registration card for the motel which was actually her mom's house wasn't there she didn't live
21:40there she was uh mom really didn't know where she was living if not she was homeless just bouncing around
21:47we were really trying to find her as many locations we could whatever contacts we had
21:55while detectives attempt to locate teresa dean they also investigate the full identity of the man known as
22:02emilio she had met this guy that mr kozad only knew as either emilio or danny or something like
22:14that was in her phone with mr kozad's help we were able to get access to the bank account that she had
22:19because he was on that bank account and it showed several transactions that were also that we were able to
22:25follow up on one of the things that really stuck out was a storage rental unit mr kozad brought that to
22:34our attention and so that was looked into a name and phone number we got from there the phone number
22:40matched what mr kozad had given us the name we got was emiliano uriasti
22:49through statements from laura ortega and other witnesses
22:53detectives learned more about the relationship between abigail and emiliano and how teresa became
22:59involved with them both abby was very trusting one of the things with her brain injury is she was
23:06just very very trusting to a fault the desire for friends and friendship and companionship abby
23:14really wanted to have a normal life in the time period from memorial day may 26th
23:23until may 31st she had withdrawn and spent or it had been withdrawn and spent from her account
23:30over four thousand dollars from what we knew that was not abby's pattern of spending
23:38emiliano and teresa used abby's credit cards and money and bank cards right away
23:45they were taking advantage of abby from moment one they were using her car they traveled with her car
24:00to the motel they had put abby in the trunk of her own car wrapped in plastic these two suspects were
24:09depraved individuals who preyed on a vulnerable young woman
24:19as we were going through all the financial records and everything we found the transaction
24:23that was done on the 31st and it was done at the walmart up in thornton we had detectives go out there
24:32and get security footage of the parking lot and the register and throughout the store of that time and
24:38we were able to show both teresa dean and emiliano uriasti in the store at that time and making the purchases
24:46they bought cleaning supplies and lighter fluid
25:03and it's always been kind of a creepy thing to think about that we were standing right at that hotel
25:08in emiliano and teresa dean drove right by us saw all the police there and said okay obviously our plan's up
25:16detectives investigating the murder of abigail kozad at the primrose motel still have no leads as to
25:30the whereabouts of their two prime suspects emiliano uriasti and teresa dean when they suddenly get an
25:37unexpected call on june 12th we had gotten the phone call that emiliano was going to turn himself in
25:45and his father was going to pick him up and bring him to us his father on the limousine service he
25:51got into his limo that morning we had undercover officers follow him drove around picked up another
25:57male and then went to his grandmother's house where emiliano came out got into the limo and they drove up
26:06to the jail he was wearing a suit kind of had a look on his face of
26:13arrogance at the time as well it was disturbing that was the first in my career at that point
26:20and i still haven't seen it since he gets out and never forget him putting on his sport coat like
26:25he's a celebrity at the oscars or something and just that arrogant walk he wasn't turning himself in
26:33for murder worst human being i had ever met gentleman that actually was with him said that he was his
26:41lawyer and that emiliano would not be making any statements and that we were not to talk to him
26:45there's a lot of times people will tell us they don't want to talk to us especially when turning
26:49themselves in with a lawyer teresa dean is located the very next day on june 13th her stepmother
26:59actually had contacted us and said that she had spoken with her on the phone she was down at a rehab
27:07center in denver and so one of our sergeants took her into custody
27:15i guess we can just you know get to it um the reason here that that that we're here tonight is
27:22because we're investigating a homicide that occurred in adams county okay okay um and so hold on before
27:33we go any further am i under arrest we are going to be talking about um some things okay and but i want
27:42to make sure that that sounds like an extremely big issue okay so well i mean when you hear homicide
27:50you're like i i don't know anything honestly about any anybody getting murdered or anything to do with
27:59that so with all due respect sir i want a lawyer she was denying everything but too much the stories
28:12would change a little bit here and there and she was always very very adamant that she didn't do anything
28:19wrong so teresa when you were in the hallway you i'm sorry when you were in the hallway you mentioned
28:25that you you now want to speak with us well i'd like to know exactly what's going on if i'm going to
28:31be accused of things like that because i have nothing to do with no murder and why would i honestly
28:40be arrested for first degree murder but i didn't have nothing to do with it or even know anything
28:48about a murder i didn't have nothing with it i didn't i didn't i didn't have nothing to do with
28:58nobody getting hurt man i understand yeah i never put a hand on that one girl i didn't okay what what
29:05happened with emiliano and happy what what you said he wigged out he wigged out he started smashing
29:13her against the against the dashboard he started he was gonna throw around the car
29:19you know he's telling her to jump jump jump jump jump jump you know thank you
29:28i thought he was gonna kill his boat and you know like i wasn't a cop and i wasn't in a complex
29:35you gotta understand that like i didn't even i've never met this chick in my life where were you in
29:40the car i was in the back of the car the back seat yes okay were you behind the driver's seat or the
29:47passenger seat i was behind i was behind the passenger seat and who was driving miliano was
29:55okay honestly if i had an involvement with somebody honestly getting hurt would i put my name on a hotel
30:04and grab the registration i know he pulled out some money i don't know if it was her money or
30:10his money or where but i know he pulled out some money that's what we used to get the hotel room
30:17you know yeah i did help her out of the trunk why because i didn't want to hurt man you know i did
30:29and then you know she was supposed to take a shower or take a bath i went in there and checked
30:35on her real quick came out miliano went in there and was alone with her you know me and laura left
30:47came back and she wasn't there anymore
30:51during part of the interviews that we did um laura again was was interviewed
30:58of course okay and she said that again she saw things happen she saw what amelio some things amelio
31:05did she also claims that she saw you doing things as well like what that you also assaulted her that
31:15you grabbed onto her hair and you pulled her
31:16why would she say that why would she say that i don't know
31:31and theresa i'm gonna tell you okay if you had to do something you were there with him i understand that
31:39he's a very intimidating person you were very very scared but that's something that we're going to
31:45know okay so we need to know exactly what went on because we're going to see it forensically when we
31:53look into this okay if you had to do something at the beginning and then get out of there as quick
31:59as you can i understand that well he went ahead and you know he i got to grab her and make her go to the
32:09bathroom you know take a shower take a bath but i don't you know like he was
32:18he said i've never dealt with nobody like that in my life
32:22why did you have to grab her bring her back there because she wouldn't move
32:28you know she needed to be cleaned up she was she was
32:31she was he was gonna sit there and hurt her even more
32:50abigail cozad had gone out for a double date with emiliano yuriaste teresa dean and another man
32:58detectives were able to piece together what occurred in the car by interviewing the second
33:03man that attended the double date he had talked about that double date and they were just treating
33:09her horribly and then at another point he had described teresa dean pulling her hair pulling abby's
33:15hair and smacking her repeatedly they were trying to pressure her to get a motel room abby didn't feel
33:23comfortable with that she just wanted to go home teresa started hitting abby saying hey don't don't
33:28disrespect your man like that you know don't talk back to him you know you should do what he says
33:33the mail that went with him said he didn't feel comfortable and so they he just wanted to go home
33:40and so he asked him to drop him off at home so they drove him home and dropped him off
33:45the only people remaining in the car are abigail teresa dean and emiliano yuriaste
33:53at this point that's when emiliano starts yelling and screaming at abby they're driving
34:02around he's speeding around he at one point grabs her hits her head into the dashboard of the vehicle
34:08and is trying to get her to jump out of the car and tries pushing her out but she's thankfully
34:13wearing her seat probably you can't get her out then they got off at one of the exits pulled off
34:20the road emiliano told teresa and abby to get out of the car teresa got out emiliano was already out
34:27they had both closed the doors abby locked the doors they couldn't get in the car she managed to
34:33be able to get over to the driver's seat emiliano had then punched and broken the driver's side window
34:40and he was able to get the door open and get abby out of the car at which time he was wrestling
34:45around with her put her into a choke hold and knocked her unconscious
34:52so when they were when you guys were in the car and he's hitting her head against the
34:57the desk he stopped off and he dragged her outside and he started wrapping her up in plastic and he put
35:03her in the trunk and then and then he was you know like he broke out you know i was like no you know
35:12we gotta get you know let her call me out now i was like come on dude it had taken a long time for
35:19her to finally tell the truth about what she had seen and she had information that matched the autopsy
35:25she talked about emiliano punching abby in the face right in the eyes and described in detail how
35:33he was hitting her in the eyes and during that autopsy that matched her story very much because abby's eyes
35:39were just destroyed she was bruised from the top of her head literally the top of her head
35:50all the way down to her feet we're going to pause for just a second okay
35:58hey hey
36:20can you just stand up for me and turn around you're actually being placed under arrest
36:28first degree murder what are you serious i would never lie about something like that
36:35that's a very serious charge
36:39that's what you're being arrested for
36:41i've never had nothing to do with no murder teresa dean is charged with first degree murder and
36:50robbery she pleads guilty and is offered a plea deal of 32 years in prison in exchange for her
36:57testimony against emiliano yuriaste does teresa dean deserve anything other than life without parole
37:05absolutely not do the families deserve more sure i think it was a necessary thing we had to do
37:15strategically to ensure that emiliana yuriosti who was a very violent evil sociopath went away
37:23and i'm not in any way saying that any of us feel great about that but i certainly support the
37:30decision it just had to be done that way i felt she was just as guilty and i wanted her to have the
37:38same fate i wanted her to face a jury but i also understood the how the system works and
37:49you know i i agreed just to the plea deal abigail's family must wait a year
37:56for emiliano yuriaste's trial to start to see if there will be any justice for her murder
38:08the trial of emiliano yuriaste takes place in june 2016 one year after abigail kozad's murder
38:18it was just as if it was another day for him it was just another day i'll be out of here was the look
38:23on his face i remember a very distinct moment i don't know why this sticks out with me where he
38:32asked the court deputy for more water and he just kind of tapped on his glass like
38:38service please it was just that arrogance he always had
38:44when i saw emiliano was angry
38:46i wanted to beat him up how can you have the entitlement to take somebody else's life
38:59it just made me really mad to see him there was no remorse for from emiliano he smiled through the
39:08and i saw a person that was basically self-preservation you know she was very manipulative it was obvious
39:29um i think she she was saving her own skin she knew she knew what she did
39:40i don't think you can ever adequately prepare a family for what they're going to see and what they
39:45are going to hear i had talked to the family and i said i'm going to show pictures of abby
39:50and i don't want you to see those pictures because once you see them you will never get them out of your
39:56head and i wanted them to remember the beautiful abby and that they knew
40:06and so i told them i would turn to them and i would put my hand down and i just wanted them to
40:13not look at the pictures and the screen and i remember during my closing argument i turned to them
40:20and i slowly put my hand down and they were all staring directly at me they were
40:25with rapt attention and in unison they all bowed their heads almost as if in prayer it was just
40:32such a solemn and intense moment
40:39the jury is sent out for deliberation i'm always nervous when it goes back to a jury there's always
40:45that what if i missed something what if they missed something what if they see it differently than
40:50we do as far as how we put the case together and how we presented it it doesn't take long for the
40:57jury to reach a verdict emiliano was convicted of first-degree murder he was sentenced to life in
41:02prison guilty of first-degree murder guilty of felony murder guilty of robbery guilty of motor vehicle
41:11theft i felt that i felt that we had done a good job for abby and done a good job for her family
41:20i anticipated that maybe i would feel like some kind of a closure
41:25or justice had been served and i think in the lies of law justice had been served
41:31i don't know that the justice will ever be enough for me as a mother
41:44because you can never put closure to what happened to your child and the brutality
41:49i would like the world to know that my sister was an amazing smart beautiful person that
42:05cared a lot about the people in the world and i think we could all learn something from that
42:11just her giggle her presence she was she was beautiful she's just an awesome young woman we
42:23recently created an endowment in abby's name there's all kinds of help for people with mental health
42:28disorders chemical imbalances things like that but brain injuries are completely different and finding
42:33help for that we found just was so hard so we created abby cozad memorial endowment to help people with brain
42:44injuries to help them find services provide funds if they needed just medical equipment or whatever and
42:52you know abby can help people that were in her situation from here on out
43:03you
