00:00In the third test at Melbourne Cricket Ground, in December 1981, Javed Miadad once again
00:06showcased the artistry that made him Pakistan batting linchpin.
00:11His inning of 62 coughs from 129 balls and spanning 168 minutes was a masterclass in
00:17controlled stroke play and a patience accumulation.
00:21Particularly commanding on the leg side, Javed Miadad punished anything functionally overpitched
00:26or drifting onto the pads.
00:28There was an unmistakable authority in the way he wogged the ball through the mid-picket
00:33and a rare elegance in the manner he found the ropes.
00:37Against Bruce Yardley, he unfurled sequences of strokes that would grace any cricketing
00:42archive.
00:43First came a sumptuous cover drive, all timing and precision, followed by a perfectly executed
00:49on-drive that split the field and raised to the boundary, a textbook illustration of Miadad's
00:55immaculate technique.
00:56Then, in a moment of pure audacity, he lofted Yardley effortlessly over the fielder, the
01:02ball sailing with the grace of a painter's brush stroke.
01:06Not content, he produced yet another authoritative blow over mid-picket, the perfect treatment
01:12from a past man whose genius lay in both his placement and imagination.
01:17It was an innings that blended discipline with flourish, classic Miadad marrying the patience
01:22of craftsman with the flair of virtuoso.
01:29I don't think it was actually thrown for Yardley to try and catch it.
01:43It was meant to be thrown at the stumps, who'd sharp at me and dad.
01:50Good shot for four runs.
01:51So far, we haven't seen any late breaks.
01:52Just been off breaks.
01:53So far, we haven't seen any late breaks.
01:54Just been off breaks.
01:55And so have it me and dad dealt very harshly with that one.
02:09Beautifully picked and hit through the mid-wicket area for four.
02:13Here's Tony Gregg now in the commentary box.
02:20It's well played by Jarvat Miadad.
02:24That'll be four.
02:25Beautifully driven there through extra cover onto the hard side of the ground.
02:29Next surface is down there and four runs.
02:32And Greg Chappell continuing that attacking field.
02:35And Bruce Yardley just getting a little tired now.
02:37He's bowled 30 overs.
02:39He's limp just straying a little.
02:41Not much protection on that offside for him.
02:44And Zaheer and Miadad both aware of those gaps.
02:47And anything that's up there, they're really laying the wood on it.
02:52They might well end up going off for bad life.
02:55And it might be the chapel to settle for that.
02:58That one's hit way down the ground.
03:00There's a no ball.
03:01That by Yardley.
03:03And Miadad has gone to it very quickly.
03:06It was cut off just inside the ground there by Thompson.
03:09So three young runners to Miadad.
03:12That's a good quick call by umpire Dick French.
03:15So Jarvat Miadad the chance.
03:18Opportunity to take toll of that no ball.
03:20Something that you don't see all that often these days.
03:22But Dick French quick to throw the arm out.
03:25Good call.
03:26Locked it in the air.
03:28It was his first no ball in 32 overs for Bruce Yardley.
03:31Didn't quite have enough legs to take it to the boundary.
03:34They still got...
03:35If Jarvat Miadad had the opportunity at the start of play,
03:37he'd have settled for three for 2.45.
03:39Even though there were a couple of his batsmen who were dismissed there
03:42to what he might term indiscreet strokes.
03:45Merson Khan certainly had a century there for the taking, I reckon.
03:49And he threw his innings away early on.
03:51And Madasa, unlucky not to reach his century.
03:53And so too Marjit Khan.
03:55Both those chaps played quite beautifully.
03:57The Australian bowlers, I thought they were quite a bit too short today.
04:00That's the quicker bowlers.
04:01Yardley bowled well.
04:02But I thought Lily Thompson and Alderman were all too short.
04:05They were pounding the ball into the pitch.
04:10Jarvat Miadad waits now for the off spinner Yardley.
04:16Jarvat comes down.
04:17He plays that as a professional.
04:18Can win in a minute up.
04:20He locks that down too long on.
04:21The ball stops.
04:22And just runs into the gutter.
04:24Or has it run in?
04:25Just fall into the gutter.
04:26And overnight range certainly slowing down the outfield at the Melbourne cricket ground.
04:31He certainly has.
04:32And that was a perfectly safe shot.
04:35Jarvat Miadad worked things out to a nicety.
04:39He knew that Jarvat Miadad had no man back.
04:42And that there was no danger in locking that ball over the top of mid-on.
04:46And look how that ball stopped.
04:47I would have been proud of that if I had a number eight iron in my hand.
04:54Jarvat Miadad was a cry.
04:55They go through.
04:56We'll look at the signal from umpire French.
04:57Yes, he made contact at the end of the over.
04:58Three for 267.
04:59Me and Dad waits now for the off spinner Yardley.
05:01It's nicely placed.
05:02Man close in on the off side.
05:03Means there's no cover.
05:05And that's a great effort.
05:06A good chase.
05:07Hurled himself at the ball to stop it going for four.
05:08Picked it up.
05:09And it passed.
05:10It's a great effort.
05:11A good chase.
05:12Hurled himself at the ball to stop it going for four.
05:13Picked it up.
05:14And it came back like a rocket into Marshall's gloves.
05:15Very handy for captains who have a fieldsman like Terriorio.
05:16And that's a great effort.
05:17A good chase.
05:18Hurled himself at the ball to stop it going for four.
05:20Picked it up.
05:21And it came back like a rocket into Marshall's gloves.
05:26Very handy for captains who have a fieldsman like Terriorio.
05:27He can field in slips.
05:28Or he can make a good save like that in the outfield.
05:29And then finish off that good work with a good throw right over the stumps.
05:30Through the gap.
05:31And that's a great effort.
05:32And that's a great effort.
05:33A good chase.
05:34Hurled himself at the ball to stop it going for four.
05:35Picked it up.
05:36And it came back like a rocket into Marshall's gloves.
05:39Very handy for captains who have a fieldsman like Terriorio.
05:43He can field in slips.
05:44Or he can make a good save like that in the outfield.
05:46And then finish off that good work with a good throw right over the stumps.
05:51Through the gap.
06:08An Australian fielding standard dropping right away.
06:11Fumble out there by Bruce Laird.
06:13Should have only been two in it.
06:15Didn't pick it up cleanly and allowed Ian Badensar here to scoot through for an extra run then.
06:20Finished it off with a bad return.
06:22He's been in fielding this morning.
06:25And he's sloppy indeed.
06:29Lily to Jabet Miendad.
06:46The bowling figures as they stand at the moment.
06:49Applause.

06:54Applause.

06:57And he's hardly had a moment.
06:58Of anxiety out here.
06:59Comes up for three wigs.
07:00Lily to Jabet Miendad.
07:02Lily to Jabet Miendad.

07:11Cut it off.
07:12And got a bad bounce too.
07:13Which he did exceptionally well to cut it off.
07:14And Dirk Wellen was quick to come across.
07:15Dennis Lillie.
