00:00A dozen much-loved Yorkshire landmarks have now been secured for the future,
00:07after what Historic England describes as extensive repair work across the region.
00:12Its Heritage at Risk Register for 2025 highlights both the success stories
00:16and ongoing challenges in protecting the area's historic buildings and monuments.
00:20One of this year's major successes is the Rockingham Kiln in Rotherham.
00:24Historic England says the structure, part of an internationally renowned former porcelain works,
00:29received £77,000 in repair funding during 2024.
00:34It had been added to the Register in 2022 due to severe decay in its brickwork, mortar and timber,
00:40as well as damage from vegetation growth.
00:43Following restoration, the kiln has now been removed from the at-risk list.
00:48In Sheffield, a key part of the city's steel heritage has also been secured.
00:52The Well Meadow Street Conservation Area, known for its rare surviving examples of small-scale steel and cutlery works,
00:57has been taken off the register.
00:59Historic England says it was previously listed due to dereliction and unsympathetic development,
01:04linked to changes in land use during the 20th century.
01:08Funding from Historic England and other partners supported the repair of derelict buildings
01:12and the redevelopment of long, empty plots.
01:15Another Sheffield site, the Bower Spring Cementation Furnace, has also been rescued.
01:20According to Historic England, it is the only surviving location containing both cementation and crucible furnaces.
01:26More than £60,000 funded repairs, including vegetation removal, masonry repointing, stonework consolidation,
01:35protective cappings and the removal of graffiti.
01:38New paving and landscaping have been added to help protect the site in the long term.
