00:49enthusiasm this is so much effort his plans to restore one of the oldest clubs in manchester
00:54have hit a brick wall we're on our knees this is rock bottom here now isn't it and to make matters
01:00worse the girls in blackpool have struggled to bond as a team don't get lucky mate oh short maddie

01:17let's just do some cricket somewhere you're getting your pads on
01:21in blackpool freddie's girls team have now been training together for the past two months
01:26right we're good to go but they've yet to play their first match keep running running and many
01:31are still struggling with the hard ball i'm going out language language so tonight is all about seeing
01:40if they're ready to play again
01:45i don't want to put them in a game against other team and embarrass them i want them to compete i want
01:49to feel confident in what they're doing but tonight we'll just see how far they've come
01:53and if they are ready for that first game
01:55well ball good right swap ends if it goes well it could bring some confidence out of them and it could
02:03spur them on to do more and more but on the flip side of that though if it goes badly
02:07you're coming back to square one
02:08so we're ready all right summer oh no no no oh god

02:40oh i'm done with cricket i'm done i do think especially with girls our confidence does
02:46you know fluctuate a lot you know one one week we're all having the best week we've ever had and

03:02nothing and the problem is she went on leg didn't she all the week let me tease the back in with a
03:07soft ball and a hard ball and she got it again so she's back to square one it's hard isn't it
03:12because i if we're going to play a game we're going to use a hard ball you gotta have to find out
03:15isn't it luckily didn't it's hard no i don't know it's all new ground for me this is she coming back

03:28for 16 year old summer playing a new sport is something she's struggled with since joining the team
03:35i feel like i can be like a bit harder myself like
03:38like if i can't do something first time i feel like i won't be able to do it at all
03:44it kind of knocked my confidence down i just have like that feeling where i'm going to let the team
03:51down like i'm going to be like the failure of the group in cricket you're going to get hit and it is
03:57going to hurt but it's not how what happens to it's how you react that says more about you
04:02i don't know you'd actually be surprised at how rare this is a group of girls all playing a sport
04:09and it's like really a privilege to get this because i've never had this before and i would
04:16never let my injuries stop me from this opportunity and i don't think you should either because you've
04:21got so much potential i'm hoping i can get better obviously with most of the group being like so
04:27supportive i feel like i'm gonna get there wait wait he'll be great on game day you're gonna get
04:35the winning wicket i do think a game is really important in like building as a team and it would
04:41mean a lot to me like it would be my first match with a group of girls which is crazy how is your
04:47hand can you do can you move that your thumb tonight it's been mixed we've had injuries we've had
04:52shout in with our burping and in between everything we've had some half decent cricket you know what
04:58i'm just going to throw them into a game what what can we do you know what i mean we could be here for
05:02the next 10 years i don't know if i'm brave or stupid it's a fine line that people tread isn't it
05:06but you know what they might surprise us hopefully the competition of a game will bring the best out in
05:11them could go horribly pear-shaped as well but i'm at a point where i'm prepared to try
05:25for their first ever match freddy's taking the blackpool girls a hundred miles across the pennines
05:30from lycashire to yorkshire set in over 220 acres queen ethelberger's collegiate is one of the county's
05:39leading private schools known for its academic excellence and multi-million parent sporting
05:45facilities how's everyone feeling good you know i'm actually nervous now that we're getting close
05:51why don't be nervous maddie should we go hide i think we're getting here now freddy did you actually
05:57think that we were ready for this or i know i know you're ready for this money these people are
06:01gonna think we're like some stupid kids and like 100 percent honestly came from special school
06:07they're gonna look at us and think this is easy money yeah let's go you know the best thing to be
06:11in life underestimated i get paid for let's remain underestimated it is a complex group of girls you
06:18know and they've grown up in blackpool where are we going you know you listen to the stories and
06:23some of the distractions they've got in everyday life are quite serious ones what we're trying to do is
06:34give them confidence to try new things push them outside the comfort zone and hopefully that'll help
06:40them in their lives moving forward oh my god do us a favor right i know it's all a bit different but
06:50when we get off just remember that these were being hosted by these they've invited us here introduce

08:17really exclude me fully because i didn't care since i was 11. oh my god the skirts have to be at
08:22knee length yeah they're supposed to be yeah getting home school do you mad
08:31i actually can't believe this but this is our first time playing a match yeah yeah you guys nervous
08:37yeah yeah i'm nervous i was expecting private school but this is probably the privates private
08:43school i have ever seen in my life but it is amazing like i would love to go here it's so nice
08:49so have any of you ever been to blackpool i went to blackpool when i was younger actually it's got
08:53with all the lights at night time with all the lights yeah to the arcade yeah it's like two worlds
09:05collide you know a group of girls from blackpool with all different needs and complexities but
09:11then when you look at this place and you look at the facilities and the opportunity for the kids
09:14here it's incredible and i'm genuinely happy for the kids that they get an opportunity to come here
09:19it's just i wish the kids like our girls had more opportunity i suppose in some ways that's
09:24what we're trying to do um at the moment on quite a small scale get yourselves ready

11:15with a hard cricket ball we're doing hard balls yes we will be i'm scared 16 year old summer
11:23has struggled with the hard ball throughout training
11:41someone's had a bit of a wobble you know you come to a new place or a new environment
11:45we're challenging them to a game of cricket against kids who they think are probably far
11:49better than them and it's inevitable there's gonna be some nerves there's gonna be some anxiety
11:54it's moments like this where you're not quite sure what to do yeah i'm not training this

12:06we don't want to do we you don't have to do it then but every time when you've had a good day at
12:12cricket you've loved it and what happens now is you work yourself up and it's never as bad as you think
12:18you're here to enjoy it you don't have if it's making you this upset you don't have to do it
12:22they build it up so much in their own minds and this expectation and pressure where
12:27you know it's a big win being here in the first place
12:31but summer isn't the only girl suffering from last minute nerves

15:18not in a million years did i think i was going to be in a cricket team right never
15:22but i'm feeling a bit more confident about it i just can't wait for the match day me

15:48she's quite emotional she's quite hard on herself let me give her five

16:15i don't think she understood what actually happened and then you know in the rules of
16:19cricket that's out so i think yeah she's really disappointed

17:12despite a strong performance at the end of their first ever match
17:16the girls have fallen short by just 18 runs
17:19i think when the girls look back today they can look back and think i see
17:29he'll be really pleased with himself and take some pride from that yeah we might not have won the
17:33game however you know just getting through it coming here is a massive success the only thing
17:39is though it's a shame maddie got upset but you know she's got to learn haven't she
17:50back in blackpool freddy's keen to get a better understanding of maddie
17:55i think the hard thing with maddie is getting to talk she's so guarded you know she's someone who
18:00doesn't speak too much about herself doesn't let you in i suppose that's earned and you've got to
18:05gain her trust and make her feel she can talk so i hope today is some way towards doing that a
18:11little bit more and we can find about a bit more about maddie oh this is our ferret dog lady oh lady
18:19yes maddie has recently moved into supported accommodation to help her prepare for living
18:25independently you can have a chat with through here she can make me a drink yeah see how far she's gone

19:10it's if you go somewhere new whether it be the cricket the football or a job
19:14how does it make you feel do you feel anxious do you feel nervous not really no no
19:20i'm not bothered i'm quite used to it to be honest what about when things don't go well
19:25oh i get angry really yeah i've never noticed really have you always been like that yeah
19:32you find it hard to talk yeah a little bit why i don't know it's not easy just don't like
19:40trusting new people really that's all it is so you bottle it all then yeah if i bottle it up
19:47though you know i'll probably start crying and then that's not so or i'll get angry that i've
19:52held it in for so long i've done that i drink and then it comes out yeah
19:56i just tried it hard to trust people why because
20:08because basically i've been in care since the age of 11 and with people walking in and out my life
20:16most of like of my time growing up and people coming in me speaking to them me getting along with
20:23me trusting them for them to walk out so that's been like a common thing yeah so it's just been
20:28a struggle trusting people every time someone comes in so from 11 to now who's in your life from
20:35then anyone like social workers and that so they come but i've had about 20 different ones right and
20:42like i've got on with them for a full year or two and then they just go i get that so there's people
20:49coming and going all the way through yeah build a trust and then gone yeah
20:55quite very naturally no i get it you've got so much talent so much ability you can be anything
21:00and you know it that's the frustrating thing about it when you speak you know how good you are at
21:05everything and you back off you need to push through that don't we yeah so yeah if there's something
21:12you need tell us having kicking off or getting frustrated what every two minutes tell us what you
21:17want let's see how we can help you you've got so much talent so much ability i mean you smile it's
21:22lovely it'll see look at you look at you look at your smile it's true though isn't it making me blush
21:30i know she says that she's been in care since 11. um i can't even begin to imagine
21:36what that's like oh this is all right isn't it you know she talks about things where she
21:43struggles gaining people's trust and people coming in and out of her life
21:47there's somehow we need to break that cycle or help her break that cycle you are tidy as well

21:58i'm hoping that maddie will find something she wants to do and she'll grab it with both hands and
22:03put all that energy and all that enthusiasm and all that talent she's got into it it's just
22:08finding that thing and helping to get there with three new teams now up and running across the
22:19northwest freddy's ambitious plan to expand his field of dreams is proving to be a bigger challenge
22:25than ever before doing three hasn't made it three times harder it's almost made it ten times harder
22:31um i think that's one of the things that we're struggling with a little bit but i think the
22:36very essence of this is helping the kids that we're coming in contact with and then seeing the kids
22:43thrive i think that that that's success cricket isn't necessarily the most obvious route to do that
22:51but we're trying what is anyone else here i don't know not yet there's only three of us
22:57what rocks up anymore it's been two months since freddy held tryouts in manchester

23:08the dungeons yeah yeah yeah but despite regular training sessions there aren't enough players
23:14turning up to form a team which is threatening to derail freddy's dream of creating a league of
23:19successful clubs so where's everyone else i don't know we can't have a team with three players yeah i
23:25know a bit apprehensive you've seen how many are going to turn up you know we're getting what six
23:32seven lads turning up each session the problem with that is when it's not a cricket team it's
23:38definitely not enough to support a club because this is such a big project you know it's not just a
23:43team this is a ground it's it's a clubhouse it's trying to engage the local people ultimately we're
23:52trying to create something which is lasting but i think tonight we've just got to give the lads the
23:56best we can um and worry about that further down the line one of the boys who has turned up for
24:03tonight's training is 15 year old hassan what's up mate good all right you look tired i am i am
24:12what have you been doing not been coming have you session no i came couple then don't think it's my

27:23we'd have seen some more people coming from the area this has been nothing has there so that's a
27:30worrying part and the hard thing is is that i don't want to let them down we have to have a think
27:34about what we can do if it ended and we didn't get a chance to like all get stuck into it and
27:40actually play a few games and stuff because i've been really enjoying it i think i'd be a bit
27:44devastated because it's given me something to do all summer if it comes to an end now i will be upset
27:50yeah same i'll be absolutely gutted so i met some cracking mates and the hard part is getting the
27:56people and if we can sell our experiences then i do believe that we can have a good good few lads here
28:03need to literally beg people to go look at the turnout at the moment there's only seven of us
28:08you know what i mean we need to get at least 11 and it's we're struggling for presley
28:16keeping the team together has become a priority as the boys have started hanging out away from the
28:22club too jesus that's my pepper lonnie pizza presley's come home tonight with two of his cricket
28:31mates and seeing him just bonding with kids and smiling and laughing and you know it's something
28:39that we've always wanted for him because he struggled through school you know we're making friends and
28:44stuff i used to get bullied with my weight and my heart can we kiss i just thought if i moved to a
28:54different school i don't get borders the same but it actually is worse because you're like a black sheep
29:02and a white sheep pen and i mean you stand out like a sore thumb do you want a pizza
29:08i don't really like talking about and it's difficult to talk about but if the cricket ended tomorrow
29:22i'd be gutted because i'll miss the lads i'll miss the banner and the problem is freddy as well
29:27your pizza has a delivered i'm very proud yeah i am and watching him you know stick to it and enjoy it
29:39and him wanting to go further in it you know he loves it
29:46at freddy's third club in liverpool it's been a struggle to get the boys to regularly turn up for
29:52training so he's relying on the lure of playing another cricket match to get the team back on track
29:58i'm hoping the lads turn up and they're enthused because they've got a match on monday you know we
30:04played one already against the preston boys and they got beat but but monday i'd like them i'd like
30:10them to put a performance in to be honest with you not just on the field but off it as well
30:13i just want them now to you know show a bit more respect you know stop swearing
30:22i'm not expecting to be perfect however these lads can improve a lot in a lot of different areas
30:28might as well get cracking on let's get cracking not got a team we've only got four of us five of us

32:0717 year old ryan is one of the eldest in the group and despite running rings around kyle at their
32:15first training session is emerging as one of the team's strongest players this is impressive
32:24whoa i just thought goes to show doesn't it you know he puts a bit of effort in
32:28he was he was unbelievable he's a naturally talented lad isn't he for a skinny person i've got a lot of
32:34power behind me to be fair even when it stacks up against us and there's so many things which
32:40we're battling yeah that counts that counts we have to keep trying no it doesn't that was a hand
32:47motion you know it gives them part of a team and friends you know what something else to do
32:51they're just hanging about the streets or playing on xboxes or sat in the house it gets them outside
32:56doing something shot these boxes come out you know why that is connor don't you that's because

33:44cricket team and find more players presley's rallied his teammates together to take action

34:02lads together today to um show freddy that the club's worth serving and that we all are dedicated
34:08a bit busy at the minute mate all right nourish all right hopefully they start spending and the
34:16word gets about the area and the club starts getting more people so basically we are trying
34:22to get a rundown cricket club back up and running and get kids to play we do want a team to go on we
34:29do want to make something from this you know much about the cricket club there no not really right well
34:34we're trying to get it back up and running we've got a training session next week we'll we'll love
34:39you to come all we want is just a team to play with a team where we can compete friends what
34:45i've never played cricket before it doesn't matter i'm not really good dom's not right good so
34:50we're all learning together cheeky bastards
34:57despite the boys trying to drum up new recruits the cricket club at newton heath is still
35:02deteriorating but freddy's hoping for some good news from manchester council they came to newton
35:08heath and they said they were setting up a task force um they're going to do all these investigations
35:13and find out what they can do what the club needs so hopefully they're going to say oh this is what it
35:18needs this is what we'll do and we'll crack on um but that'd be the dream wouldn't it uh thanks for doing this
35:27i know you were putting a group together and doing a lot of studies and surveys um i'm just wondering
35:34what they've thrown up um hopefully what a great news we've done um some building and structural surveys
35:44the conclusion that we've come to uh is that the building should be demolished and a new facility
35:49provided i think i think you know i think you know honestly i think we knew that anyway didn't we
35:53so i've been gathering um different people to support us in terms of uh developing a uh a set of
36:01proposals for a new building um which is coming in for the construction only so none of the like
36:09fitting out uh for approximately 850 to 900 000. and then when it when it when it comes to cost
36:19is there any help anywhere with that from manchester council i suppose the difficulty we've got is
36:27it's not our building and it's not our site it's the trustees site so we you know we we um we're helping
36:35by so like the planning application we will submit and cover the costs for all those things but in
36:41terms of actual um construction costs with not owning the building that puts the council in quite a
36:47difficult position so from from a point of view with like your surveys and planning once all that's
36:54gone through we're on our own we want to see this uh project succeed so we want to stay involved
