00:00The progressive wage policy has the potential to help low-income Malaysians earn better
00:04wages if it is made mandatory, says an activist and a former MP.
00:09Women's Aid Organization advocacy manager Gandipan Gopalan said the PWP is a positive
00:15step to ensure that workers are more adequately compensated, but its voluntary nature and
00:19limited registration weaken its impact.
00:22He said the PWP, if implemented well and made compulsory, could bridge wage disparities,
00:28especially benefiting single mothers and women working in small businesses or as contract
00:33workers at government premises.
00:36Introduced under the 12 Malaysia Plan midterm review, the PWP links wage increases to productivity
00:42and skills, offering incentives for employers who participate.
00:46Former KLANG MP Charles Santiago said the policy acknowledges that the labour market does not
00:51always benefit low-wage workers and should therefore be mandated.
00:56He added that countries like South Korea and Singapore saw real wage growth only after
01:00making similar programs compulsory.
