00:00So tell me before the engineer gets here.
00:03Well, I can't tell you anything until the engineer gets here.
00:06He's not going to like what he sees.
00:09Yeah, that whole thing is basically dirt.
00:12That's a big tree.
00:13It's destroying the pool bar.
00:16This whole thing needs to come down.
00:18That's like actively wet.
00:20We may have to scale back and not do all the units right.
00:23Confirming that the full resort buyout is moving ahead.
00:28I'm going to need something a little stronger than this.
00:30Alligator Lighthouse is one of the attractions here.
00:51For people to come down to the Keys,
00:52as we have for the past 30 some odd years.
00:5530?
00:57I've been coming down here a long time.
00:5820.
00:59Oh, sorry.
01:00Yeah, you've been coming.
01:0220.
01:02Oh, who else have you been coming with?
01:06Right now, we are operating companies in three different countries,
01:10which is exhausting at times.
01:13But I think for Brian and I, we set out this year understanding that we would need to divide and conquer a little bit.
01:22I've got to leave tonight, fly back to Canada, drive.
01:26We're doing work at the cottage.
01:28I've got to get back down to the Bahamas again.
01:31There's a lot.
01:32My schedule is ridiculous at the moment.
01:35Last year, I kept saying I'm going to take it a little easier this year.
01:39But, yeah, it's filled up quickly.
01:42The plan originally was that I would kind of be on site as much as I could here in Pines and Palms.
01:47And then back and forth to Florida for the kids.
01:50And then here, now that we're sort of heavily into it, there's so many structural things as well.
01:55It's not ideal, but right now it's what the businesses need and what we need to do to make sure they're thriving.
02:00Over the next two months, do you realize I'm not home for more than one night?
02:05Ooh.
02:06Yeah.
02:07I'm very sad.
02:09You're not sad.
02:13They say absence makes the heart grow fonder.
02:16I'll throw you in.
02:17It'll be okay.
02:26Feels good, though.
02:27Oh, that was nice.
02:31I still have to get back.
02:32I've got to get packed.
02:33I've got to get out of here.
02:34Should we go back to work?
02:35I'm working on the guest experience right now.
02:38I'm loving it.
02:39When I drive up north to the cottage, back home in Canada, I get in the boat.
02:57The clean air and the water, and it's hitting the reset button.
03:01My parents bought some property on Georgian Bay when I was 10 years old.
03:08And when my dad got older and had some medical issues, we bought this piece of property from
03:14them.
03:14They've asked to spend time at the cottage.
03:16But unfortunately, we haven't spent a lot of time here over the past five to seven years.
03:20Oh, there's a good stick.
03:29And it looks like every old dock that's floated in just got tied together.
03:33Beach is covered.
03:35Oh, man, is it ever overgrown?
03:37Things are starting to fall apart.
03:39The family cottage for me, it's pretty nostalgic.
03:44We spent our teenage years there.
03:47You know, Sarah and I had our second date at the cottage.
03:49It's just great memories and food and family time.
03:52And that's a lot of memories to just ignore and let them kind of rot into the landscape.
03:59This is where we had our pop-up trailer.
04:03This is the barge dad built to bring all the material over.
04:06Look how that plywood's rotten.
04:09This little barge carried every single piece of material up here to build the cottage.
04:17When we were building this path with my dad, there was a little root running across here.
04:22And he said, make sure you cut all the roots out.
04:25I still remember there was a small root there.
04:26And I poured this concrete over top to bridge the gap.
04:30And look what it's done.
04:32After all these years, I finally figured out you should listen to your dad.
04:35You reach a point in your life, I think, when you have kids, you realize, you know, my parents weren't as dumb as I thought they were.
04:44And now my kids think that of me.
04:46And it's a whole cycle.
04:47We started building the cottage, I think, when I was 12.
04:54Every single piece of lumber, every bit of material, every furniture, every can of paint, literally up the hill on our backs.
05:02And it was an adventure.
05:03Oh, a little moss on the roof and the eavesdrop's falling off.
05:17These are a little...
05:21Oh, this foundation must be sinking.
05:25Oh, yeah, it's pulling the main service right out.
05:26That's not safe.
05:27Okay, so that looks like a serious problem.
05:31Looks like we have a structural issue that is pulling that cable down and slowly pulling it out of the meter.
05:37If that gets to a point where it pulls out completely and that main service arcs, we will need some marshmallows.
05:44Let's see what we got inside.
05:50Oh, it smells like nostalgia.
05:51Yeah.
05:55Hey, hey.
05:57How's it going?
06:26Doing well.
06:26We're here, rocking and rolling, trying to get this knocked out for you.
06:29We got four teams, one in each unit.
06:31One in 26, one in 27.
06:33For today and tomorrow, our goal is to knock down all the windows.
06:37All the windows for 26, 27.
06:38Perfect.
06:39Because this property is many decades old at this point, we do have natural age, a little bit of rot.
06:46So we have to look at the integrity of every single structural beam before these new hurricane-rated windows come into play.
06:52This is the area of concern, right?
06:54This is the area of concern right here.
06:55This is a steel beam that runs up to the second floor.
06:58All the way down to ground floor.
06:59All the way down.
07:00So we'll know more now when we pull the openings out.
07:02So I'm going to fingers crossed that there's nothing damaged and that we will remove these and put in these beautiful windows.
07:09That's it.
07:10That's the goal.
07:10That's the problem.
07:20That's pretty much how I remember it.
07:23Vintage.
07:24In our teen years, this was the family project.
07:27Putting in that hardwood floor one nail at a time with a manual nailer.
07:31I think every piece of drywall was probably a screw by hand.
07:35It was pretty formative.
07:38Maybe that's what, you know, really drew me back into construction.
07:43Who knows?
07:44I love the kitchen.
07:45I love the colors.
07:46But backsplash can go.
07:49Dishwasher is...
07:52I think a lot of this stuff is end of life.
07:54Walking inside, you're just...
07:57You're hit with the smell, the sounds, the old photos.
08:01This is a bit of a time capsule for me.
08:08Oh, the tub.
08:10Frankensteined.
08:11Okay.
08:12A little update.
08:15Okay, the party room.
08:19Oh, big crack up there.
08:24Oh, boy.
08:31We're gonna need to fix that.
08:35Oh, the stairs.
08:37This is a sound I'll never forget right here.
08:45I'm gonna leave that.
08:46That's a classic.
08:48A big thing with the cottage is all the photos on the walls.
08:51I think as you get a little older and the kids get older,
08:53you want to hold on to a little bit of that nostalgia
08:55and have something to draw the kids back
08:57and continue to have those memories.
08:59And hopefully, going forward, you know,
09:00maybe one day it's our kids with their kids having the memories.
09:09Ooh.
09:12The rim joists rotting.
09:14Stairs are rotting.
09:15My parents haven't actually been to the cottage
09:17in probably about 10 years.
09:19But with the decks falling down
09:21and the structural issues,
09:22it's in no shape for them to be here.
09:24We have to make things easier for them to get up here
09:26and make things safe.
09:27Yeah, this place is falling apart.
09:29I need some love.
09:33Maybe someone will come up and help me.
09:43Maybe later.
09:44So I heard about this, but I haven't seen it.
09:54Yep.
09:55Yep.
09:56This is basic ocean studies.
09:58Right now, you can see the steel on the bottom.
10:01Salt water.
10:01Salt water is just corroded that.
10:02Ocean air corroded it.
10:04All you see is concrete, which is the dangerous part.
10:06The structure is gone.
10:08This is an important part of the property, obviously.
10:12This is a structural beam holding up these three-story townhomes.
10:15So this needs to happen in this unit and the other unit
10:19before they'll even put the hurricane new windows in.
10:22Yeah, the steel is disintegrated.
10:25Things you want to hear when you're 40 feet off the ground.
10:28The steel is disintegrated.
10:30Yep.
10:30This is an emergency repair.
10:32It needs to be fixed, and it needs to be fixed now.
10:34The other one is actually worse.
10:36It requires a whole new pull.
10:38It's worse.
10:39Yep.
10:42That's pretty good.
10:59It's perfect.
11:00It's perfect.
11:02Anthony's been a friend for a number of years.
11:03He owns a construction company and a barging company.
11:06Are we going to make it up there?
11:12I guess we'll see.
11:13I guess get it as far as he can get it.
11:15Okay.
11:15If it was me, I'd probably get it all the way up there, but...
11:17Challenge.
11:19Challenge.
11:19But secretly, I'm glad it's not me.
11:28There he goes.
11:29When we were younger, I did not have a track loader or an articulated wheel loader or an excavator.
11:38My dad had actually manufactured some stretchers that you could load up with concrete bags, and you could share the load with a friend.
11:46So we would invite a lot of friends up to the cottage for the weekend.
11:51You're like, oh, while you're here, there's this giant pile of concrete.
11:54We need to get up to the top of the hill.
11:57Watch your fingers.
11:58Now that everybody's arrived, one of the first things I want to attack is that rotten deck on the front of the cottage.
12:11Having a few more carpenters on site to help with the tear out and rebuild of this deck is appreciated.
12:17Oh, yeah.
12:18As you get older, things get heavier.
12:20Get out of here.
12:20Get out of here.
12:28Oh, Joe, it looks good.
12:40A little messy, but we're getting there.
12:43Due to our time constraints here, the property is open and operational.
12:46We want to continue that as much as we can.
12:49One of the areas that we're prioritizing is the reception and office.
12:53It's key so that we can get the team a home base.
12:56Electrical is being done right now by Elizabeth.
12:58Electrical, rough, plumbing.
13:00We're upgrading to central air.
13:02See, you're full of good...
13:04Do you hear Mother Nature out there?
13:07I'm happy, so even though she's angry today.
13:10No big issues here, and then we can work on the archway into this part of the space.
13:15I want this whole space to feel airier and brighter,
13:18so I'll create better flow in the office and reception area
13:21by connecting these spaces through an arched hallway.
13:23All right, kitchen, you'll start drywall next, and then we'll be good?
13:27Yep.
13:28We took out the old kitchen and opened up the area
13:31so there's room for a simple counter and a comfortable seating area for staff.
13:35Oh, this is new.
13:38Yep.
13:39We've knocked down the wall that used to be a storage area
13:42and created a grab-and-go place for guests.
13:44I'm also adding a special touch with custom millwork.
13:47I think this is shaping up to be the farthest unit along on property.
13:53Am I right?
13:54I think so.
13:54One out of 28 is easy.
14:03This is not a full renovate, remodel, redesign.
14:06This is really remediation.
14:09Doing a little bit of work to give it, you know, more life into the future.
14:13Oh, look at this, boys.
14:18Oh, that's the original color.
14:19That's what she looked like when we built it.
14:21Our cousins from Germany came over and actually drew this.
14:24Going through a property like this where, you know, you grew up
14:27and you spent a lot of time and there's a lot of family memories,
14:29it's little things like this you want to find and hang on to.
14:35On the inside of the cottage, we have a little bit of demolition to do.
14:38Carpet has to come up in the bedrooms.
14:40In the bathroom, we're pulling out the tub and the sink.
14:44I bet you don't have one of these at home.
14:45No, I've never come across.
14:46The big toe hanger.
14:48You can stick the end of your toothbrush in here, too.
14:50Maybe this is a razor for your legs or knees.
14:54The bar soap holder.
14:561980s.
15:00This bathroom has seen a lot of bomb or bums,
15:02so it's time for an update.
15:03We're bringing in lots of different contractors to help on this project.
15:16Unlike some of our regular projects,
15:17when it's just Brian and I communicating 24 hours a day,
15:21there's a lot of juggling.
15:22I just want to make sure that nothing gets missed.
15:25Welcome to the fisherman's cottage.
15:26This is not what I anticipated.
15:35This is not a remodel.
15:36No.
15:37I saw it when it was still with furnishings and, well, looks quaint.
15:43It doesn't look so quaint anymore.
15:45Oh, my God.
15:46It was that moment where we were like, wow, stop, just wait.
15:53Let's take a moment and reassess this entire situation.
15:57I mean, that'll catch your eye,
15:58where there's, like, tree roofs growing up through the base.
16:01And this is all just wood.
16:03Like, I feel like I'm standing in a backyard shed.
16:06Just old and termites.
16:08Like, that is just termite infested?
16:10Yep.
16:12Oh, my God.
16:13And they used to have guests in here.
16:14Yeah.
16:14We're seeing so much rot.
16:17We're seeing decay everywhere, termite damage.
16:20I think the only option is to replace it.
16:22So you're just going to take it down to concrete pad?
16:24No, we're going to take everything out and demolish it,
16:27which we can get started on right away.
16:29Okay.
16:29And then build a new building.
16:31Similar footprint, almost exactly the same.
16:33Okay.
16:33And just elevate it up a couple feet.
16:35It'll end up being a little bit more money
16:37to have a whole new building,
16:38but they're going to get ten times the product.
16:41On site and around the cruise,
16:43it's important just to remain calm, cool, collected.
16:46But on the inside, I'm a bit of a nervous wreck
16:49because this place is falling apart.
16:51Oh, my God.
17:06The Fisherman's Cottage is rotting from the inside out.
17:10It's termite-infested.
17:11So everyone has made the executive decision
17:14that this unit needs to come down.
17:15We do not have the timeline,
17:22and we do not have the budget,
17:24but we have to do what's right.
17:29We will start from scratch.
17:30We will have to do a new set of plans,
17:32apply for proper permitting.
17:34We're no longer a six- to 12-week refurbishment.
17:37We are a six-month new build.
17:40Okay, what is Sarah sending me here?
17:47The demolition.
17:48That usually is Brian's favorite part of any project.
17:52So I'm sure he's a little sad he's not here.
17:54I guess we're down a villa.
17:57That's usually my job.
18:00Do you have excavator envy?
18:02There's no such thing as excavator envy.
18:04Whether you're on a 3-ton or a 10-ton,
18:06it doesn't matter.
18:07As long as you're on one.
18:07You know, I'm up at the lake house moving rocks.
18:15And Brett's down in the Keys on our project,
18:18you know, destroying a villa.
18:20It's a toss-up.
18:22Only Brett's excavator is bigger than mine.
18:24That's it.
18:29Hmm.
18:30This is really not good.
18:32Wait, there you go.
18:34There's a bear on the deck.
18:36As soon as I saw this issue with the electrical panel,
18:39I gave my buddy Paul, who's been my electrician for years,
18:43I gave him a call.
18:44You have a problem.
18:44Can you fix it?
18:46No.
18:46This is a hydro problem.
18:47Yeah.
18:48You think about how much snow and frost you get here,
18:50that's yanking on it.
18:51So you think the weight of the ice and the snow?
18:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:54Seeing as there's nothing Paul can do for the meter base,
18:57I have another job in mind he can help me with.
19:03Some old docks have floated in over the years
19:05that we've continued to tie up.
19:08So we want to clean that area up,
19:09get that material out of there,
19:10and the easiest way to do it is grab it with a claw
19:12and move it out of the way.
19:17There's giant dock spiders on here.
19:19Humongous.
19:19Well, yeah, that's why you're down there.
19:21Yeah.
19:30I'd call that a success.
19:32Okay, but you know there's a gap here.
19:36Oh, yeah.
19:37You're going to have to run and jump.
19:40I don't run.
19:41I'm old.
19:42I'm going to go grab some lunch.
19:43I'll be back.
19:44Get back here.
19:46This is not funny.
19:51We are at a bit of a standstill.
19:54We have the windows.
19:55We have crews standing by ready to install.
19:58However, there are issues with the rebar.
20:00It needs to be replaced.
20:02This is a structural beam holding up
20:04these three-story townhomes.
20:07We need a welder to come on site on his weekend
20:10to template and actually restructure
20:12and reform this pumpy post.
20:16We're basically just waiting.
20:21At this point, we've done a lot of moving backwards.
20:27The front deck is completely demolished and removed.
20:31We've got the Juliet balconies ripped off
20:32the front of the cottage.
20:34The railings are off the back deck.
20:36It's a bit of a mess, but we're getting there.
20:40Oh, there we go.
20:41Can you hear that?
20:42Yeah.
20:42It's not a great sound in your spine,
20:44but it's a good sound on the floor.
20:46In the bedrooms, we're going to install
20:47a luxury vinyl plank.
20:49It's a really resilient floor.
20:50It looks like wood, but it's really easy to clean.
20:53Yeah, the carpet, especially with the kids,
20:55I can't imagine how much juice and bodily fluids
20:58have ended up in here over the years.
20:59Oh, yeah.
21:04I chose the color of the floor myself
21:05and didn't consult Sarah.
21:07Just, we're busy, and I had to get something chosen
21:10to get it up here.
21:11And now that I see it, I'm not sure
21:13that it matches the mahogany and the yellow walls
21:16and the existing oak floor, it's going to work really well.
21:26The townhome unit's problem has been solved,
21:28which means the rest of the windows can be installed.
21:30So much to complete.
21:36It never stops.
21:37Construction everywhere.
21:38Byba is the general manager here at Pines and Palms.
21:42She really keeps everybody on track.
21:45So it's important that the new reception
21:48and the new office function far more efficiently for Byba.
21:53We're getting there.
21:54It's slowly moving.
21:55All the electrical's being run,
21:56and this is all AC lines, correct?
21:58Yep.
21:59Windows tomorrow, then sheetrock for you guys.
22:02Is that next?
22:03It won't be in the perfect order
22:04because it's a rolling construction.
22:07We're going to get into whatever we can get in.
22:09Realistically, tomorrow,
22:12I have a truck coming that has all of this millwork.
22:16So custom millwork, custom millwork,
22:20in the kitchen, two gigantic fridges.
22:24They arrive tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
22:26And I have probably about five massive crates.
22:31Just let me wipe the sweat off my brow.
22:36I already was sweating.
22:37It's hot enough.
22:38I know we're not ready for them.
22:40Well, let me get on finding somewhere for them.
22:44Oh, yeah.
22:44We look like we're ready for cabinetry.
22:54What are you working on?
22:55Uh, oh, we got an issue here.
22:57Look at this.
22:57The meter box has pulled down the electrical line
23:03from the main service box.
23:05So you can actually see the wires
23:07that are still shielded into that box.
23:11I think this is getting pulled with frost,
23:14but it's getting pulled faster than the cottage is thinking.
23:17Right.
23:18We'll go peek down and see what's going on downstairs.
23:20Okay.
23:21We'll be good to fix this.
23:25You're going to figure out what's going on here.
23:28Oh.
23:31Oh, s***.
23:35That's rotten.
23:37Oh, look at this.
23:39That's just cardboard up there now.
23:41There's nothing left.
23:44There's nothing left of that.
23:47The pier's not sinking.
23:48That's still above grade, everything.
23:50Oh, s***.
23:51Oh, you're touching the subfloor almost.
23:53Okay.
23:53That's bad.
23:54The problem here is that the beam
23:56that's sitting on the pier is completely rotten.
23:59All of that weight is just slowly pushing down
24:02onto wood that doesn't exist anymore.
24:05That's not what you want to see.
24:06This whole thing could drop 7 1⁄2 inches.
24:08That whole backside of the cottage could collapse.
24:11The meter box, it could arc,
24:12and we would have a giant fire.
24:15Well, that's worse than I thought.
24:16That's a lot worse than I thought.
24:18If this failed, I would die.
24:21You'd probably be okay.
24:22I'm fast running.
24:23This reception area has been the hub
24:36for all things construction.
24:37It's just been pretty chaotic for Baiba.
24:40She has handled it like a champion,
24:43but I'm sure she's sort of happy to see the end of it.
24:46We've got a few more finishing pieces.
24:48Obviously, we'll get the rest of the hardware on.
24:50I can't wait to get my office back,
24:53get all the construction boxes out.
24:59Do you need Baiba quickly?
25:00I'm so sorry.
25:01Don't worry. Don't worry.
25:02I apologize.
25:04Baiba and I are going through the office,
25:06and, well, there's an IT gentleman
25:08that needs to get in.
25:10Sorry, just around to the right.
25:11I just need to go behind you.
25:13Sorry.
25:21Oh, here we go.
25:23We got a bit of an issue up here.
25:24Yeah, this is super rot.
25:27Everything holding this place up in the middle
25:29has rotten, and that's a recipe for disaster.
25:33There we go.
25:35We just want to take our feet off right now, right?
25:36Yeah.
25:37Temporarily, we have got some bottle jacks,
25:39and we've raised the cottage again
25:42and re-supported it where it should be.
25:45Ultimately, we're going to have to replace
25:46the end of the beam that has rotten
25:48underneath the cottage.
25:49So if we've got that jacked up there,
25:51let's let it rest for a little bit.
25:52We can get that new piece of beam put in,
25:54new post and footing.
25:56We've got Hydro in to take care of this,
25:58and we should be good to go.
26:05Woo-hoo!
26:06We've got the power washer out
26:08to clean up some of the rocks
26:09in front of the cottage.
26:09I want to have that smooth, granite look there,
26:13the Canadian shield that we all know
26:14and love on Georgia Bay.
26:17Corey and Eric are going to move forward,
26:18get the structure of the deck built,
26:19start getting those deck boards down,
26:21and we're going to have a deck, a new deck,
26:23that you're not going to fall through it.
26:25It's going to be great.
26:28Joel's moving forward in the bathroom.
26:33And we've got the AC guys here
26:35to install a new ductless unit
26:36to replace the 1970s air conditioner.
26:38Good morning!
26:51Do you like?
26:52I love it!
26:53I love it!
27:02The reception area is amazing.
27:06It has so much space, so beautiful.
27:10It was so dark.
27:12Now I love that there's so much light.
27:15We did all new ceiling, running the tongue and groove,
27:18giving you guys some of the recessed lighting.
27:20A hotel's not 9 to 5,
27:22so you can have guests checking in 8 o'clock at night.
27:25So if you're here, it still has to feel inviting,
27:28even if it's pitch dark outside,
27:30and you want people to feel good.
27:31We gave this space some personality,
27:33in particular with a wallpaper.
27:36It is a mural that we had done
27:38specifically for this space.
27:40It just feels tropical and relaxed.
27:43You wanted cabinetry.
27:44You wanted storage.
27:46We have it.
27:47We have lots of it,
27:48which I think is beautiful, right?
27:50Add to that all of the custom cabinetry,
27:53the layers we put in with a beautiful live edge
27:55to just bring this natural element.
27:57We did the oversized desk here for you,
28:00obviously with a beautiful stone countertop,
28:02easy to maintain.
28:03And we did a little bit of nod
28:05to the history of Pines and Palms.
28:07This is such a wonderful place
28:08from the original family
28:09to some of the look and feel
28:11of what the property looked like,
28:12which I think is so great.
28:14I love it.
28:15The one thing that this property is a bit shy on
28:18is actually space for their team.
28:24The kitchen.
28:25They have a little kitchen to use as well.
28:27For employees.
28:29I've been on property,
28:30and you've been here 8 o'clock,
28:319 o'clock, 10 o'clock.
28:32You need a spot that you can go
28:34and have a bite to eat and re-grill.
28:37Storage spaces,
28:38areas where they can just put their lunch away.
28:40Those things create a happy working environment
28:43for your team.
28:44On to all the space we have over here.
28:47Grab and go.
28:48Grab and go!
28:48The grab and go originally was a storage room.
28:58What we've done is reclaimed the space
28:59and made sure that it can now function
29:01not only well for the hotel,
29:03but also be a source of revenue.
29:04I think I've been doing some of the grabbing.
29:07I may have grabbed a few cold beverages
29:10when we were working.
29:11And snacks disappear.
29:13Right, you're giving away all my secrets.
29:15Sometimes grab some snacks and some drinks.
29:18Together now, I feel like this serves the guests,
29:22but also functions far better for their team.
29:25You have been such a trooper
29:27living through all of the construction chaos.
29:30I'm going to miss you, Viva.
29:32I'll be here.
29:33Stop by.
29:34Don't be a stranger.
29:35I will take you up on that,
29:36but I will stop drinking all of your beverages in the fridge.
29:39Thanks, Viva.
29:40We have a long way to go,
29:42but I think days like this
29:44just hopefully remind the team
29:46that we are making progress.
29:47We will get to the finish line.
29:49We just have a little more work to do.
30:00With the reception finally finished,
30:02it's a great excuse to just take a moment.
30:04I'm going to enjoy an afternoon
30:06with the kids out on the water.
30:07We got a little surprise for you guys.
30:09What's our surprise?
30:10We're going to go jet skiing!
30:13Yeah!
30:14And you, my sir, are now 14.
30:17So what does that mean?
30:18I can drive?
30:18Yes, and don't throw your mother off.
30:20Deal?
30:20No promises.
30:22Deal.
30:22All right, go, go, go!
30:23As busy as Brian and I always are,
30:38we will always get in family time,
30:40even if it means it's on the job site.
30:49That was fun,
30:49but there is work that needs to be done
30:52back in Canada,
30:52so unfortunately I have to hop on a plane,
30:56check on the millwork,
30:57check in with Brian at the cottage,
30:59and just see what else needs to be done.
31:05We are looking at some custom millwork
31:08for Pines and Palms.
31:09Storage was something that didn't exist
31:11in any of these cabins or suites,
31:14so we're finding a way to standardize things
31:17across the board.
31:18I love millwork,
31:19which I think people find strange.
31:22All right, walk me through
31:23what you guys have here first.
31:24Okay, so this is the material
31:26that we're using for the closets.
31:28Which I like.
31:29This is like linen.
31:30Yes, it is.
31:31But indestructible.
31:33Indestructible, exactly.
31:34This is what we need for hospitality.
31:36Yeah, it's very elegant.
31:38This is the handle
31:40that we're proposing to use.
31:41I actually love the finish on it.
31:42It's not a strong black.
31:44It's an in-between.
31:45Yes, it's like graphite.
31:47Graphite, yeah.
31:48Slate, beautiful.
31:49With no sharp edges.
31:50Casual and not too formal
31:52for this property.
31:53This is like a nice hybrid of both.
31:55And then we've also mixed
31:56the natural wood veneer as well.
31:59Yes, we can have a look
32:00at the cabinets that are there.
32:02Oh, you've got some ready to go?
32:03Yes, we do.
32:04Love it.
32:08Welcome to the shop.
32:10Wow!
32:12So this is one of the ones
32:19already ready to go, almost.
32:20Yes, the closet for the ocean view.
32:24It's completely finished inside
32:26with the same material.
32:27Gorgeous.
32:28We have the drawer box on the side.
32:30Okay, we're all set for basically
32:31storage for guests,
32:33extra space for their luggage,
32:34luggage rack, pillows,
32:36and then we'll just finish it on site.
32:38So you guys are going to pre-drill everything?
32:40Yes, we don't want to ship with these on
32:42because it'll damage.
32:42It'll damage.
32:43It's easier to pack it this way.
32:45All the way down to Florida?
32:46All the way down to Florida.
32:47Amazing.
32:51Today's going to be a fun day
32:52because Sarah is almost here
32:54with Lincoln and Josephine.
32:55It'll be great for them
32:56to see this place again.
32:58I do not remember it looking like this.
33:00About as long as I've been with Brian,
33:04I've been coming to this cottage.
33:05When you arrive at the dock,
33:07it still feels like you're arriving home.
33:10You know, it's a flood of memories.
33:12We should maybe get a new deck.
33:14Build a new deck, you mean?
33:15No!
33:16You guys don't appreciate, like,
33:17the old things.
33:19The pathway up to the cottage,
33:21we all complain about lugging the groceries up,
33:23the kids have complained,
33:25but it's just one of those parts of the cottage
33:27that we also remember fondly.
33:30We have photos of every single child
33:32walking hand-in-hand
33:33with their Nana and their Opa
33:34up that pathway.
33:36It's very nostalgic for everyone.
33:38Oh, my God.
33:39She's different.
33:41Don't you mean old?
33:43She's old?
33:43Careful with the old comments.
33:46She's aging.
33:48Not so gracefully.
33:49Yeah.
33:50The cottage,
33:52well, it's not exactly aging like a fine wine.
33:55However, kids need to watch the age jokes.
33:58We're all getting a little bit older here.
34:01Whoa.
34:02It looks so different.
34:04No, you guys are just older.
34:06The cottage looks the same.
34:08It looks so much different.
34:10I haven't seen it since I was, like, two.
34:12I know.
34:13You probably don't even remember most of it.
34:15The inside isn't horrible,
34:16but it's a little vintage for my style.
34:19It hasn't changed.
34:20It's still...
34:21still living in the 80s.
34:23So I think Lincoln and I are going to go fishing.
34:26Go down to the boat,
34:28go on the cliffs,
34:28do whatever.
34:29Just stay out of trouble.
34:31Oh, my God.
34:33Look at this.
34:36Hey, that's where I have my avocados.
34:39You haven't been here for a long time.
34:40Eight-plus years?
34:42Nothing has changed.
34:43It's definitely time to renovate.
34:46The question really is,
34:47how deep are we going on this project?
34:49I was thinking about the backsplash,
34:51you know, the fruit baskets and the cheese and the milk.
34:54Yes, I agree.
34:55Time to go.
34:56Growing on me.
34:57No!
34:58That wasn't what I was saying.
34:59Isn't this all going?
35:01Like, countertop's gone,
35:02appliance is gone,
35:04sink's gone,
35:05backsplash gone,
35:06hardware gone,
35:07drapery gone.
35:09I think I'm a little more attached to things.
35:11Sarah's just kind of like,
35:12well, change that, get rid of that,
35:13move this.
35:14Cabinet's staying,
35:16countertop is staying,
35:17backsplash is going,
35:18new appliances.
35:20And that's it.
35:22We're going to keep the flavor,
35:23just clean it up a little bit.
35:27Memories.
35:29I just think it all needs to go.
35:32Oh.
35:33They've already changed the floor.
35:36Not bad.
35:38I'm just here as a visitor.
35:39You've been invited.
35:40I'm your guest for the weekend?
35:42You are a guest.
35:43As long as you behave,
35:44your invite will remain open.
35:46But there could be a boat
35:48going back to the mainland
35:49at any moment.
35:50Or you could put me to work
35:51at any moment.
35:52Keep that in mind.
35:52One of the two.
35:551987.
35:56Yeah, 2017.
35:58Oh, yeah?
35:58That's a good year.
35:59We should take care of that.
36:01The other thing we should take care of
36:03are these.
36:04Let's get this off of here.
36:05How about we just, like...
36:06No, don't damage that.
36:08It's just a backsplash.
36:10Don't damage that,
36:11because you might want to take this home.
36:12That, I wasn't going to damage that.
36:14It was going to damage that.
36:16Take that home and save it.
36:17I'll put this in our bathroom.
36:19Here you go.
36:21One of the first things
36:22I was forced into doing
36:23was renovating the kitchen
36:25in my bachelor pad,
36:26and we started with the backsplash,
36:27and Sarah helped me.
36:28So we're going to go back in time
36:30a little bit,
36:31and she's going to help me
36:32with the backsplash.
36:33Try and get underneath the glue,
36:34because we want the glue off.
36:35But you didn't get under the glue.
36:37Listen, you know how they say
36:39I say not as I do?
36:42Oh, it's coming off easy.
36:43Do you want to end up
36:44on one of those shows
36:44where they're always arguing
36:46about the renovations?
36:46There's this couple,
36:47and that wife and husband,
36:49they just argue all the time.
36:51No, you're digging into the drywall.
36:55Okay.
36:56Walk over to that side
36:57and meet me in the middle,
36:58and let's be productive here, Bombler.
37:00We've got things to do.
37:01Okay.
37:04I'm not happy
37:04with the way you're doing it, though.
37:06Well, it's going to be easier
37:07to start at the top,
37:08because this one's grouted in.
37:10I think there's...
37:14Hit it.
37:14A deck calling your name.
37:16Hit the next one.
37:18I'll leave you to do this.
37:19Yeah, this is getting
37:20my frustration out right now.
37:22Okay.
37:22Try not to break in.
37:27Woo-hoo!
37:27That looks better.
37:45I'm weighing the need
37:46to have a view
37:47versus the need
37:48not to fall down the cliff.
37:49Yes.
37:50So what's the plan here?
37:51You're just taking
37:51some of the bottom limbs off?
37:54I don't want to take them all down,
37:55but I'd like to be able
37:56to see the water.
37:57Okay.
37:57Why don't you thin out
37:58some of the branches
37:59a little bit first,
38:00because I think it's nice
38:01to have a little bit of privacy.
38:03Okay.
38:03How about then we work on this?
38:06That's on the list.
38:07This is what it feels like
38:08to turn 50.
38:09Just look at this place.
38:10This is how you feel
38:11in the morning when you wake up.
38:13Yeah.
38:13Good luck, you too!
38:19You're there to see the lake,
38:21not the trees.
38:24Can't see the lake
38:25for the trees.
38:26Can't see the forest
38:27for the trees.
38:29Anyway, we're going to see
38:30the lake again.
38:39Well, what do you want to do?
38:40Do a little fishing,
38:41go for a swim?
38:42We've got our cliffs.
38:43Do you want to do some jumping?
38:44I'll throw my kid off the cliff
38:46if you throw yours off the cliff.
38:47Let's do it.
38:48My brother Paul and I,
38:49you know, we've always
38:50been very close,
38:51and we have a lot of memories
38:53together at the cottage
38:54in the shenanigans
38:55and adventures we got up to.
38:58How long ago do you think
38:59we first jumped off these cliffs?
39:01Well, how old are you?
39:0239.
39:03Yeah.
39:04I was 10 or 11.
39:07Yeah, I was probably 13.
39:08So a good almost 40 years.
39:11Oh, my God.
39:12The good old days.
39:14Let go!
39:15Let go!
39:17Oh!
39:18Woo!
39:19Oh, memories.
39:22I feel a real responsibility
39:23now that we own
39:25this family property
39:27to maintain it
39:28mostly for my parents,
39:31for my kids,
39:32so they can develop
39:33their own memories there,
39:34keep it in the family
39:35for my brothers
39:35and my nieces,
39:36my nephew Corbin as well.
39:38You know, all the other family
39:39and friends that have spent time there
39:40that have built memories there.
39:42Come on, old man.
39:43Get up here.
39:44Everyone can have that
39:45reset feeling.
39:49All right, you guys ready?
39:56Oh, we've got to pick
39:56some colors here.
39:58I brought samples.
40:00Look, we're just going to scrape
40:01some blue stuff off.
40:03They're a big.
40:07Just clean up the one
40:09and then we can try all the paint.
40:10You want to shake those all up, Link?
40:11Here, let me get a couple of boards.
40:13We have three great shades of blue,
40:14all of them just a little bit different.
40:17Thank God, thank God, thank God.
40:18Where do we go
40:27with these two children?
40:28All right, let's get them open
40:30so Dad can decide what's what.
40:34Brian wants to keep the cottage blue.
40:36It's part of the memories.
40:38Blue's my favorite color
40:39and I'm usually,
40:40I'm in a blue t-shirt.
40:41Oh my God, I just spilled.
40:42Don't spill on this brand new deck.
40:45My bad.
40:45I'm in a blue t-shirt.
40:46I'm in a blue t-shirt.
40:47I'm in a blue t-shirt.
40:48I'm in a blue t-shirt.
40:49Link?
40:50Yes?
40:51Link, we're trying not to drip.
40:52I'm not dripping.
40:53Well, that's almost like a battleship gray.
40:55It's actually eggshell white.
40:56Working with the kids is total chaos,
40:58but I do enjoy it.
40:59I have to just let things go a little bit.
41:02Stop doing what both of you are doing
41:07on the brand new deck
41:08and bring that over here
41:09onto the drop cloth
41:10for the love of the game.
41:12Dad!
41:14Are you sure you don't want to go fishing?
41:16I'd love to go fishing.
41:17Why don't you go fishing?
41:19Okay.
41:20Okay.
41:21You've been a huge help.
41:22Appreciate it.
41:23Perfect.
41:24I'm going fishing.
41:25Go fish.
41:26There's a giant bee on me.
41:27That's not a murder hornet.
41:28That's a bee.
41:29I'm running away.
41:30That's a regular hornet.
41:31Give me a screwdriver before you go.
41:32Just let them go.
41:33I certainly relate to the fact
41:35that the kids show a little bit of interest.
41:37Oh, paint.
41:38We can make a mess.
41:39And then now I'm done.
41:40I'm going to leave.
41:41I'm not washing the brushes.
41:42I get it.
41:43I mean, I was, I was a kid.
41:44They're kids.
41:45I get it.
41:46Oh, the bugs are out.
41:47I know.
41:48I got paint on me.
41:49I'm going to leave.
41:50I'm going to leave.
41:51I'm not washing the brushes.
41:52I get it.
41:53I mean, I was, I was a kid.
41:54They're kids.
41:55I get it.
41:56Oh, the bugs are out.
41:57I know.
41:58I got paint on me.
42:01It's been a while since, uh, this does feel like a little back in timey.
42:06So are you feeling good being back?
42:08Yeah.
42:09It's, it's nice to get dirty again and just hammer, hammer down on this.
42:12It's a lot of work though.
42:13That's my only fear.
42:14It'd be a lot of work to scrape and paint the outside, but the stuff we're doing inside
42:17is just to keep it alive.
42:18Keep the nostalgia alive.
42:20You kind of want to keep it like in the late 80s.
42:23It's in the early 80s and we're just trying to take her up to the late 80s.
42:27I can't unleash you fully on this.
42:30There's a lot to do, but we do have more to do in Florida and the Bahamas.
42:35Yes.
42:36So how's Pines and Palms and when?
42:38Ramping up.
42:39Do I need to get down there?
42:41Yeah.
42:42I have to go tonight.
42:43I'll keep blinking here.
42:44You take Jojo with you.
42:45Okay.
42:46Then I'll be down.
42:47We'll deal with Florida for a bit.
42:49We'll get over the island.
42:50There's things going in three different countries and there's only two of us.
42:55That's exciting.
42:56And we're just like circling.
42:57Let's just take five minutes.
42:58Let's sit here.
42:59And get the bug spray out.
43:00Oh, come here.
43:01Come here.
43:02Let's take five minutes and enjoy the view.
43:04All right.
43:05I'll take five minutes with you and enjoy the view.
43:08We both agreed this year in particular that with all of the projects on the go that we
43:14can't both be everywhere together.
43:17So we're just going to have to be ships passing in the night.
43:20For now, let's just enjoy this.
43:22Yeah, it's nice.
43:30I do not feel the entire property will be ready.
43:34Your crews are working six days a week right now.
43:36We're now shortening that by a month.
43:38When I think about the budget, it makes me want to vomit.
43:41It won't be a full knockdown, but it's going to be a challenging one.
43:46When you do the math, we're not going to make this wedding.
43:49You know, there's not enough surprises in mind.
43:51There's sometimes too many.
43:53Dig all this out, fix these walls falling down.
43:56It's probably going to be about a seven-month turnaround.
43:58That's not going to be there by the time we open.
44:00No.
44:01Our timelines and budgets are out the door.
44:04I don't know how the hell we're going to make this happen.
44:11Oh, no.
44:13How would you do?
44:14Hook you down.
44:15Guess what?
44:16All right.
44:18It's worth two hours.
44:20We put your life on the floor.
44:23Allen and Dad.
